Acid Reflux and Apple Cider Vinegar Cures
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR READER FEEDBACK
[YEA] 08/20/2008: Kristi from Peoria, AZ writes: "Apple Cider Vinegar has been my miracle cure! I began to suffer from acid reflux this past winter when my gall bladder decided to stop working properly. The pain, weight loss and sleepless nights were making life for me and my family miserable. The side effects from the doctor prescribed PPI's were worse than the reflux. After reading posts from this site in June, I ran out and bought Apple Cider Vinegar supplements from my local health food store. I just couldn't stomach drinking the vinegar straight. After the first supplement, my stomach felt a little calmer, but I thought perhaps it was just wishful thinking. Each day I continued on with the ACV supplements (1 with each meal), and each day the reflux improved. I can now completely control my reflux with ACV supplements and diet, staying away from my trigger foods as much as possible. Sometimes I forget to take the supplements at each meal and still no problems. I also take digestive enzymes and probiotics to aid digestion since my gall bladder has been removed."
08/21/2008: Jeff from Los Angeles, CA replies: "Kristi from Peoria AZ 8-20-08: Can you please tell me the name of the Apple Cider Vinegar supplements and what store you purchased them from? I am looking for the same thing. Thank you. Jeff"

[YEA] 08/17/2008: Robert from Toronto, Ontario writes: "My wife had been suffering from severe chest pain from acid reflux for about a year. Almost every night, no matter what she ate during the day she would have some extreme attacks. As her husband I wanted the pain to go away, I felt powerless. So we went to 4 different doctors all prescribed medication that didnt work, ranitdine 150mg and 300mg, Losec, Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid and Protonix.
Not one of those medications worked, and with each new medication, I kept telling her that it would take about a week to work, I just lied to her) to get her off my back. But I felt so emmasculated, because there was nothing I could do for the pain. Finally I read a book on nutrional healing and it told me to take Apple Cider Vinegar, to increase the acid and normalize. I didnt think much of it at the time, mainly because for the last year we thought she had too many. But one evening she woke up, she said she couldnt breath and was having the worst heartburn of her life. I Didnt know what to do, so I ran to the 24hour grocery and picked up ACV. Gave her a Tablespoon in a glass of water, and the pain went away in a few minutes.
And for the first time in about a year she has been able to sleep an entire 8 hours without waking up.
I can't believe Doctors dont know about this, and if they do why do they prescribe medication that clearly doesn't work."
08/18/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "To Robert from Toronto: To answer the why? It is called job security, if the doctors told you that ACV would solve the acid indigestion problem, you would not keep coming back for another prescription. Another thing to consider is that the strongest union of all, the AMA, will try to put any doctor recommending anything they can't control will try to put them out of business."

[YEA] 08/13/2008: Maggie from Brick, New Jersey writes: "I have suffered with GERD with a year. I could not eat tomato sauce, choclate, soda or fried foods (basically 90% of my diet :). I also could not lie flat in bed. The pain was constant, no matter what I ate, how I ate, when etc. I was put on the typial meds which either did nothing or made the pain worse. I was eating antacids like tic tacs. I asked the MD why I developed GERD as I have no risk factors for it and was unsatisifed with the answer of "it just happens". As a nurse, I need to know the reason why. The pain had to stop. I was not going to go through this the rest of my life. I came across your web-site and thank you and Thank God!! I used the regular ACV and it worked a little. My sister in law talked me into trying the organic ACV with the enzymes and I have used it for two weeks AND HAVE HAD NO PAIN!! I am back to eating whatever I want. I realized I felt better when I had raviloi for lunch followed by pizza for dinner and NOTHING HAPPENED! Previously, I would have been in pain for hours and eating meds and not able to lie down. I still get pain in my stomach if I'm stressed out, combined with bad food, and I rely on an OTC med that works, now one pill is all I need. But I have gone to eating meds to taking nothing!! I checked with my MD first who could neither recommend or dissuade me from using it, but he had no problems with me using it and basically said "knock yourself out". Thank you for being there for us who suffer and I wish someone would do a study on this so that others could be pain free as well.I can also sleep flat again, and on my back, with no pain. I take a tblsp in the morning in 12-16 oz water (be sure to shake the bottle) and again at night before bed. I feel great otherwise as well. It's like my stomach is happy!! Thank you thank you thank you"

[YEA] 08/06/2008: Leland from Pickering, MO writes: "I had suffered from acid flux reflex for about two years (off & on) and I heard about takinig ACV. I did and had the worst heartburn ever. But I continued to take it. After about a day or more the pain went away and I was able to get along fine. I think if people would continue the treatment or put one tablespoon of Vin in 8 oz of water it would cut down the pain. I still take it when I have too. Every once in a while I take a generic Zantac which helps. I am still a great believer in natural remedies. I am now looking up the sites for ACV, honey and garlic to help in helping to get my body under control with weight and cholesterol. Just on garlic tablets, my cholesterol came down 20 pts in 6-8 months. Thanks for letting me share about ACV & honey. Leland"

[YEA] 08/02/2008: Elizabeth (elizabethniece [at] msn.com) from Carrollton, VA writes: "I have had GERD for so many years and relied heavily on the meds. After reading the patient insert on Prevacid recently, I was scared into seeking alternative treatment. Well, here I am. After trying the ACV, straight like wiskey :-), I burned worse than ever, then went about my day, and after five hours I realized that my symptoms were gone and that I had not taken my usual calcium anti-acids. I understand the new concept that it is an under-production problem and not over-production. This makes perfect sense that an acid would be the cure. I will keep you all posted on my progress. Thanks to Earthclinic for putting this very helpful information "out there"."

Thank you.

[MAYBE] 07/27/2008: Jane from Noblesville, IN writes: "I am, at this very moment, trying the ACV cure for Acid Reflux. I developed reflux symptoms after a greasy meal 3 months ago. I don't eat much grease and I guess it was a shock to my system. I've been on Aciphex for 3 days and today I felt worse than ever. I really do not want to take another pill so, after reading all the praises of ACV and honey, I'm giving it a shot. I also have anxiety/panic disorder and the Aciphex and pain from reflux has made it much worse. I bought a bottle of ACV 3 weeks ago. Without reading about mixing it with water and honey, I just tried a spoonful of it and couldn't bear the taste so put it away. I'm desperate tonight as its 2:30 in the morning and I'm in such pain I don't know what else to do. I only used about a teaspoon in a cup of water, and a big squirt of honey and I'm sipping it. The taste is not great, but bearable. Part of my symptoms are esophageal spasms from my esophagus trying to keep the acid from leaking out. And today I have this horrible lump in the back of my throat that feels like a ball of acid. I've gotta say, I think I'm feeling a bit better from it. I will continue to take it 2 or 3 times a day, as well as the apples. I just can't take another PPI. I sure hope this works. Thanks so much for offering me some hope of a natural cure."
07/28/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hi Jane, sorry you're having so much trouble now. Getting bleached flour out of your foods may elininate your GERD problems, as it did for me. I also wanted to alert you that those anxiety/ panic attacks can be triggered by the monosodium glutamate &/or aspartame so rampant in our foods these days. The best way to find out is to search "excitotoxins" on line, print out that long list of names they hide MSG under and go check everything in your kitchen and see how much you can eliminate and see if they cease."
08/03/2008: Jacky from Greenwood, SC replies: "I was diagnosed with throat muscle spasms (aka Spasmodic Dysphonia). After 12 years of suffering with it, I realize I've had severe acid reflux. It has also caused me panic/anxiety episodes especially when I've had bad nights of acid reflux. Not only is my voice bad but it also affects my mood and immune system. So I am now going to try the ACV and honey remedy. I am also going to be taking enzyme pills for help with GERD. I am so fed up with the main stream doctors who only want to prescribe the purple pill. If anyone has had similar experiences, please share."
[MAYBE]08/18/2008: Laura from Florence, Texas replies: "Dear Jane and Jacky, I've only recently started having esophageal spasms myself (the first was 2 months ago), and they are so painful. My doctor had no idea what was causing them, but gave me prilosec anyway. Thanks doc. I've also been going to acupuncture every week for about a month and thought it might be helping until 2AM this morning when a severe spasm hit. Now, I'm scouring the internet in the middle of the night. After reading your postings about being fellow spasm sufferers, I tried my first glass of ACV and honey. The taste was certainly not great, but I think I feel a little relief already. Here's hoping that this inexpensive, natural remedy will be an end to the painful spasms."
08/18/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "To Laura with esophageal spasms: Hi Laura, You might start thinking magnesium deficiency in any spasm, cramping, nervous, or restless leg problems. You aren't likely to have any all effects from taking a supplement and/or utilizing the transdermal application recommended by Dr. Mark Sircus, whose article "Transdermal Magnesium" is available on line."

[YEA] 07/14/2008: Debbie from McMinnville, Oregon writes: "SUCCESS WITH ACV!
I have been on Nexium for about 3 years. Prior to that, I had been eating Rolaids like candy and taking ranitidine OTC. I had my share of "breakthrough" acid over that period of time, and I had my doubts as to whether or not this was the correct way to treat my heartburn/GERD. It seemed as if we were just treating the symptoms not the underlying issue. Since my insurance company will no longer cover Nexium, I decided that it was time to find another route for relief.
A couple of friends who are studying to be naturopathic healers suggested I check this site. Thank heaven they did! My husband and I tried ACV with the Mother and we found almost immediate relief. We have only been using it for a few days, but I have now been off Nexium and all OTC products for heartburn/GERD, my husband has not awakened with acid problems during the night, and we are very happy with the results thus far. We will continue to use ACV and tell everyone about our wonderful results!
Thank you so much for this site! I will refer to it whenever I am in need of suggestions for other ailments.
Debbie"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/13/2008: Kylie from Ft.lee, NJ writes: "Hi! I was reading about the ACV remedy for reflux and I have tried it now for 4 days. The ACV burns my throat terribly, BUT the 1st 2 nights... I did not have reflux. However the other times I have used it my stomach instantly became bloated and I got really bad pain in my stomach. I really am looking for a natural cure...so any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks :)"
07/31/2008: Deborah from Ronan, Montana replies: "This is in response to Kylie from Ft.Lee, NJ...side Effects:
The throat burning is from the acid irritation in your throat..if you can stand it a bit longer (try a little less strong mix) the burning will go away..I am a singer and have been struggling with this reflux severely for 6 months..my Grandma told me about this cure..and it really works if you can stick with the taste and burning in your throat...patience!! Also, try sipping it..not drinking it...slower seems to keep the gas down. Hope it helps. Deb"
08/25/2008: Carmen (MeByGrace(at)aol.com) from Jacksonville, FL replies: "Deborah from Ronan's comments about her singer's throat caught m attention. I have had presistent sore throat for years & trying to sing in my throat really brings it to my attention. I was told last year I have acid reflux & have tried the typical RX's that didn't help & caused other problems. I'm trying the apple now, but wanted more info on the ACV use & the issues with the throat. Appreciate any help I can get...I love to sing in church but it's a real problem. Thanks!"
08/26/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "To Carmen from Jacksonville, Have you thought of trying Bill's inhalation method of hydrogen peroxide?"

07/25/2008: Annette from Oxford, Michigan replies: "Renee, Our 14 year old son also experiences acid reflux. He runs cross country and suffers with acid especially when he runs. Just wondering if you have the same problems when you exercise? Hope the ACV helps. We're going to also give it a try. Hate to see young people as yourself, suffer with this. Good luck!
Anyone else experience acid reflux with long distance running?

ACV - worked wonders for me an effective relief in no time. i still hope it to be a permanent relief from the annoying pain of Acid reflux. I shall continue for a week or two.
Another temporary but effective relief from acid reflux is half a glass of cold milk mixed with another half of cold water, drink it fast for immediate relief."

[YEA] 07/03/2008: Keith from Nashua, New Hampshire writes: "Yesterday, I wrote concerning my first time using the Apple cider vineger. My condition was pretty severe - Gerd and/or acid into my throat and nose area, extreme pain and/or burning in the lungs. I have been dealing with this oondition for years, but it has worsened up until yesterday.
Today, I feel like I have woken up as a new man. I think my body is still trying to get used to the fact that I have no pain right now. I am totally amazed...
Yesterday morning I started out with two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vineger around 8:30AM or so. It was almost immediate that my body began to react. Withn the first few hours of taking the first dose, my stomach began to feel better.
Through out the day yesterday, I had taken a total of 4 doses at 2 tablespoons each. These doses were not accompanied by water or diluted with anything else. Just straight Apple Cider Vineger.
About halfway through the day, the burning sensation in my lungs went away.
Usually at night time, I have huge amounts acid or when going to bed. Not this time...
I am shocked. My body is literally shocked... I have never felt so relieved of these symptoms for years... This morning after waking I only felt a little acid, but this ws nothing compared to what I had been dealing with for years... I have already taken my first two tablespoons this morning and there is now no gerd...
I will keep using the Apple Cider Viniger! I want to thank all of you who have posted all of these remedies here and your results to which inspired me to make that change to using the Apple Cider Viniger!!!
Apple Cider Viniger works!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/29/2008: Laura from Kelso, WA writes: "I have suffered from acid reflux and a hiatal hernia for over 10 years and have taken prilosec for almost the entire time. Recently, I've heard that prilosec is bad for you, so I've been trying different natural remedies. I tried the apple cider vinegar and I have to say it was awful. Not only did it taste terrible, but it gave me the worst, sudden attack of diarhea EVER! Great remedy if your problem is constipation. Not so great for acid reflux."
[YEA]06/30/2008: Deborah (deborahdonihoo@yahoo.com) from Denison, Texas replies: "I have to disagree with you about ACV because it has been my lifesaver. I started taking ACV over 10 years ago because I was diagnosed with SLE & RA along with a lot of complications. One of the complications was ulcers, acid refluk and a hiatial hernia from all of the prescriptions they had me on for pain. I was having to take daily stool samples to my doctor because i was losing so much blood. I was put on prevacid 7 prilosec and neither worked. I started the ACV and my ulcers are gone and I never have acid reflux anymore.
I think a lot of people buy the cheap ACV and it does taste bad. I buy the pure unfiltered ACV with the mother from my health food store. This does not taste bad and I buy a couple of gallons at a time because I use it for so many other personal uses. I take 3 tbsp. of ACV and 1/4 tsp. of baking soda in a cup of water and drink it daily. This helps not only my acid reflux but my SLE & RA have been in remission for over 10 years and I have no joint deformity from RA. I contribute my health to ACV and I have at least 20 or more friends on it and all have came back to me with praise.
So i suggest you try a little longer even though I saw results the same day from my acid reflux and am not taking any prescriptions."

[YEA] 06/10/2008: Chef Maria Maria from Tempe, AZ writes: "I was doubter, I wasn't sure to believe the hype about using alternative meds, but after being told I have Acid reflux and trying to deal with the pain I truly believe. Last Tuesday, I got really bad heart burn induced by the stress at work, my boyfriend leaving for the summer to work and eating a heavy breakfast. I got home took a couple of tums and tried to go to bed when I had this sudden burst of wonderful acid up my throat. The pain got to point when it was hard to swallow eat and drink food! Now come on I am a chef tasting and eating food is my life and I am not able to work effectly nor sustain myself it was a complete bummer. Long story short I had this 1 ton elephant feeling on my chest and the raw pain in my thort didn't help either. I wen to urgent care. I was prescibed prevacid and instructed by the doctor that it will take time to heal the irriation in my throat and really there is nothing you can do for the pain. I immediately called my mom because my grandma also suffers from GERD as well and she gave me some helpful tips butI wanted result immediately. I first changed my diet and put my self on eating soft foods and whole grains which I am still doing Completely stopped drinking coffee :( tried honey, drinking kombucha tea which worked but got expensive. And ate soft rolaids like taffy. I fried recommended this site and this simple and inexpensive drink 2 TBSP ACV 1 TBSP desert honey and 1/4 tsp baking soda and 8 oz. of water. I can definately say that after drinking the drink it has soothed my raw throat and I an able to eat and drink things a lot bettter now and the heaviness on my chest isn't as bad but it is still there but at least I can starting eating and drinking since it hot out here ( it was a 107 today) being able to drink the fluids is important. Thank you all for your help."
08/19/2008: Pat from Maspeth, New York replies: "When treating your acid reflux with ACV (with the mother) raw honey & water, is this on an empty stomach? I'm on day three, taking it in the morning on an empty stomach & my stomach feels like it's being eaten away. A gentleman who spoke poor english at a health food store told me on an empty stomach, I think? I would appreciate your feedback. Thanking you in advance, Pat"

[YEA] 06/08/2008: Scott (scotskitkat[at]yahoo.com) from Thatcher, UT writes: "I had acid reflex really bad. My doctor put me on Prilosec. I was only suppose to take 1 every 24 hours. I was taking 2-3 a day. I was working in Alaska and someone told me to take a teaspoon of ACV in the morning and one at night. I received immediate results. I have not had acid reflex for 1-1/2 years now. I tell every one about the benefits. Drug companies only relieve symptoms and do nothing to cure disease. I also had high bad cholesterol and my Doctor wanted to put me on medication for that. I have changed my diet, began taking supplements and am currently not on medication for any past ailments. I am 55 years young and am getting younger an healthier everyday."

[YEA] 06/07/2008: Jules from Hampshire, England writes: "I had been having my lunch which consisted of salad plus a raw carrot. I managed to eat half of the carrot when I started to get pains in my stomach. As the day wore on it got more painful and my cheeks became flushed. I had to be sent home from work where I went to bed for 5 hours where the pain eased a little but the acid was very nasty in my throat. I then decided to surf the net and came across your site and read all the postings from people who had used ACV to get rid of acid reflux. It also said that my stomach wasnt making enough acid that is why i needed to drink the Appple cider vinegar. I immediately went to the shops and bought some. I added 2 tablespoons of ACV to 8 ozs of water and within ten minutes the pain was gone. I have heard of ACV before as I dabble in complimentary therapies but not to cure this ailment. It certainly worked for me. Thank you all for posting your findings to help others."

[YEA] 05/21/2008: Jack (jackipm[at]aol.com) from Mosier, Oregon writes: "I have been using ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) for acid reflux for over 2 years. I started having reflux after I had a sore foot and was prescribed 600 mg of Ibuprofin 3 x daily. prior to that time I could eat anything. After a couple of weeks of the large dose of Ibuprofin I could not eat anything without severe Reflux. After using antacids for a long time I tried 2 TBS. per 8oz ACV to Water 1/2 hour prior to eating. It worked better than all of the antacids to releive the symptoms and the reflux slowly went away."

08/02/2008: Elizabeth from Carrollton, VA replies: "Dear Laura from Calgary, Canada. If you have acid reflux you are at high risk for esophogeal cancer. Also, the proton inhibitors and the acid reducers being prescribed by most doctors are now proven to be risky for gastrointestinal cancer. Seeking main stream treatment is, at best, only a relief of symptoms. I have had severe GERD for many years and, unfortunately, relied on these drugs to ease the pain. Don't give up on the ACV!!! Remember, you swallowed an acid to treat acid (like fire with fire) you obviously have irritation and the ACV made it burn worse. This is only temporary. Once you get the problem under control the burn will stop and you should heal nicely. In the meantime, add honey for it's thick, soothing affect. Honey has natural antiseptics which can only help. Plus, it taste great!!! The first time I tried ACV, I burned so bad that I thought, NO WAY!! But, five hours later, I realized that my pain was completely gone and I had not needed any anti-acid. Awesome, wouldn't you think. The old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" applies here! Take care."

[NAY] 04/24/2008: Laura from Calgary, Canada writes: "Hi, I have been suffering with reflux for almost 4 months now, and I feel I have tried almost everything. I read on this site that ACV was a miracle, so yesterday I went out and bought some from my local health food store and tried it. I have never had such severe reflux as after I took the ACV, and the night time was even worse! I am still suffering today, and now have a pain in my stomach that I haven't felt in over a week. I am glad that this remedy gives so many people relief, but if you are trying it for the first time, please be careful. I used 2 tablespoons in 250ml of water, but I would suggest maybe halfing the ACV and doubling the water the first time, just to be sure you don't have the same reaction I did! I have heard good things about ginger juice for ulcers and reflux though, has anyone tried it and was it successful? Thanks!"

[YEA] 04/20/2008: Painfree from Salem, Oregon writes: "I can still remember that evening when I was in so much pain. I could not lie down at all. On several occasions I have had to brace myself up against the wall to keep straight so I could handle the excruciating pain from my naval up underneath my chin. I would try not to swallow because when I did the pain was hard to bear. Yes, I had been examined and I was told I had a condition called acid reflux. One night when I was in pain I felt a hard knot right between my breast-bone, it scared me, I thought it was a tumor. That enlargement is what took me to the doctor that next morning. At first the pills prescribed to me had worked, not completely, but enough so that I could function in my day to day living. But soon my lower esophageal sphincter, that muscular door that usually closes was not keeping shut and the things I ate and drank moved backward into my esophagus from my stomach. A condition called a Hiatal hernia had allowed food and drink acids to back up into my esophagus and gave me extreme heartburn and chest pain. I am writing again to say that it was on that one blessed night of 11/9/2006 that Earth Clinic had saved me from surgical repair. Thank you again and again. ACV really works for me. I have not had pain for one year, six months and eleven days (18 months, 11 days.) Today%uFFFDs date is April 20, 2008. I have never had to undergo surgery. My hair is full and shining, my skin is moist, my health is great and I am still sleeping the full night long. Yes, it is a YEA, and as I had said in the year of 2006 I must say it again: "God bless this site and its creator (s), amen, and amen."

I did some research and found that Prilosec can have a lot of side effects including UTI (I have had 2 in the last 2 months), insomnia (I have been taking Benadryl every night to sleep) and skin rashes (which I also had). I beleive these could be related to the prilosec, I'll see if these disapear soon, and will let you know. Thank you for these free remedies. I'll keep you posted!"

[MAYBE] 04/03/2008: Suzanne from Phoenix, AZ writes: "I am just going try the ACV I have been on priolosec, prevacid, aciphex, protonix, etc. Its really does not work very good. So here it goes for me I will let you know the results...My first swig of it burned but it onlyu lasted a half hour and my throat started feeling better..."
05/28/2008: Carl McLean from Conneaut Lake, USA replies: "If you are taking PPI's and still suffering from acid reflux then you might want to try and increase your dosage. I would check with your doctor but I currently take 3 tablets 20mg/day of Prilosec or Prilosec OTC. I found that this worked the best. Other PPI's cause me to have a bad back and sometimes a stiff neck."
06/27/2008: Brad from LA, CA replies: "Suzanne, if you have been on so many PPI's and it still hasn't worked, please also consult your doctor as you may have more severe problems (like a tumor that keeps making acid). Also, I'm not sure about taking more than 1 PPI pill a day, because from my readings (I am a medical student), if you suppress your acid too much, it can actually cause stomach cancer."
[YEA]08/02/2008: Elizabeth from Carrollton , VA replies: "Suzanne, Brad is absolutely correct. I, too, do not recomment increasing your dosage. These meds at normal dosage are risky enough per the recent news on liver effects and gastro cancer. Have your doctor check on the tumor issue. I'm not a doctor but as a long-term sufferer of severe GERD, I have done my research as well as the medicines. I have been on every type and brand available. In fact, I became worse after being on the medicines and briefly stopping. If you chose the meds, be sure to follow with your doctor regarding liver enzymes. Mine were elevated just above high normal for two years and my doctor suspects the PPI was to blame. Try the ACV. Be patient and it will help you, too."
