1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[YEA]  02/07/2009: Chloe from Baltimore, MD writes: "Dear Friends,

Its about 8:15 here in Baltimore and a freezing cold morning. I was trying to get some more rest to hoping this was just temporary. Well, as it turns out, I actually have a severe sinus infection and the flu, I logged on to Google and typed 'Remedies for Sore Throats.' I clicked on the link to this website and scrolled through the options, where I decided to try this one. 1 word - YEA! I mixed about half a teaspoon of salt and warm water into a mug and gargled, it instantly soothed my throat and took pain and itchiness away. Let's get well together."

[YEA]  05/12/2008: Carla from Cork, Ireland writes: "its a well know fact that the most basic remedies work the best and salt and water is no exception salt is know for its anti-septic properties, and, although it may not cause instant pain relief, it will remove the harmful bacteria causing the sore throat. just mix 2 teaspoons of salt with a mug of warm-hot water (the warm water willl help sterilse the surface of the throat) gargle 2-3 times a day and within a day or so your sore throat will dissapear! this is an ideal subsitute for anti-biotics and other harsh treatments. hope you feel better!!"

[YEA]  08/16/2007: Beth from Clearfield, PA writes: "I really enjoy this site and have tried some of the suggestions with much success. I have been ready about the Cayenne Pepper for a sore throat. I can't even imagine how that must feel. I am not a fan of spicy hot things so I know I would never try the Cayenne Pepper. If there is anyone out there that is not a fan of this type of remedy, I have one that I have used for years with total success. Gargle with salt water. I can't give you the exact measurements, because I don't make the same amount every time, but I can tell you that the solution should not be any saltier than your tears which is not all the salty. This remedy has worked every time for me and my family. My husband's aunt, who was an army nurse during WWII, told me that they used salt and sugar solutions to cure a lot of things years ago when she was growing up. Both items have healing properties when used correctly. Hope this suggestion helps someone."

[YEA]  Ruth from Fountain Inn, SC writes: "I swear by gargling salt water. My mom always used it. I tried that chloraseptic spray, it only numbs. Cough drops don't work because once you eat them they are gone. Salt will actually heal the throat. You can look it up. I think that it kills the bacteria that causes sore throats. I just know that it works. I use warm water and enough salt that I can stand it."

SALT, PEPPER AND VINEGAR

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/30/2007: Elizabeth from Orangeville, Canada writes: "I mix salt, black pepper and vinegar together. The salt helps to dry up phlegm, the black pepper appears to cling to lose phlegm and pulls it out and the vinegar appears to kill the germs. Mix together in a strength you can handle (you can mix in warm water if vinegar is too strong) and gargle about a half a cup for the first time then again before bed or if throat bothers you during the day. It's a very old remedy my mom used on me as a child."

SLIPPERY ELM

1 YEA

[YEA]  Kali from Anchorage, AK writes: "Slippery elm bark tea is great! It soothes a sore throat almost immediately."

08/13/2008: Angela from Tonasket, WA. replies: "Slippery elm is noted as soothing a sore throat by making it slippery as it's name suggests. Lozenges got at a natural food store are easy, though not cheap. The ideal would be the powder in bulk, added to your favorite hot or cold beverage. It tastes good, but I would suspect it would not heal anything, just help stuff slid down in the healing process. I would reccomend taking apple cider vinegar or cayenne pepper to actually heal the irritation."

SORE THROAT TEA RECIPE

03/15/2008: Erin from New Brunswick, New Jersey writes: "Just wanted to give a yea! to the sore throat remedies listed. I have used a similar tea mixture 3 times over the course of 2 years when I have felt a sore throat coming on, and it has never failed me! I have never gotten a full-blown sickness. In fact, I have yet to miss a day of work for being sick. My tea recipe is as follows:
Boil water in a small pot, once it boils, turn off the burner.
Throw in
- several cloves of garlic, whole (2-4 depending on the amount of water)
- several pieces of fresh ginger
- as much cayenne pepper as you can take
- a flavored tea bag (for taste)
- honey (to taste)
I drink a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon. My sore throat begins to get better, and after about 3 days (on average), it is completely better."
