NO WHEAT, NO SUGAR

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/28/2009: Katie from Marietta, GA writes: "A whole grain bread company had opened up in our town which my husband and I discovered in January. So delicious, it became an addiction. Each week I'd go and buy a loaf of multi-grain bread and some whole grain muffins and fruit bars. I'd only have one slice of bread per day, but before I knew it I gained 4 pounds which I found impossible to take off. I cut back on calories, but I still had to have my one delicious slice of bread every day. At the same time that I gained the pounds, I also started looking older and unhealthy all of a sudden, which I couldn't understand since I eat very healthy food with lots of vegetables every day and exercise 5x a week. Anyway, a week ago I decided enough was enough and went on an anti-candida diet. I cut out all wheat and sugar from my diet. No more delicious bread! In the 7 days that I started my no wheat, no sugar diet, I have lost 4 pounds and look/feel much more healthy. My skin is glowing too. Now it wasn't like I ate a lot of sugar before starting on my diet, but I did have a teaspoon of brown sugar in tea about 4x a day. And then I was only eating 1 slice of bread a day. Not a lot, but even these small quantities were reaking havoc on my body.

I hope everyone who is having trouble losing weight will consider eliminating those 2 things from your diet. The results are fast and remarkable!"

03/28/2009: Robert from Manhattan, New York replies: "This may be due the quick rise in blood glucose levels shortly after eating. Mulberry leaf will help lessen the effects of sugar spikes. Good for diabetics, but let your doctor know..."

OLIVE OIL

1 YEA

[YEA]  02/03/2009: Dave from Conroe, TX writes: "Olive Oil (remedy) Weight Loss (ailment)

I have searched this site and found nothing yet about the Shangri-La Diet created by Seth Roberts in 2005. (See www.sethroberts.net)

The bottom line is that foods with a high flavor concentration raise the body's set point and cause rapid weight gain. His idea is to counter this effect by consuming calories with as little flavor as possible to convince your body it's time to shed the pounds.

To this end he recommends taking 2TBSP of Extra Light Tasting Olive Oil first thing in the morning before consuming ANY calories and then waiting about an hour before eating. You can drink water but no other consumption until the calories have been absorbed.

He says you can repeat this a couple times a day and then only eat when you are hungry which will likely be never since your body no longer tells you to eat.

So here's the story: Two years ago I tried it and had impressive results. I noted a significant reduction in my appetite and lost about 15 pounds in a month. Often I could feel my stomach rumbling but I was in no way actually hungry. Like it had actually turned off my appetite completely. AWESOME.

Here's the rub: After a few weeks I found that the olive oil made me gag. Like my body simply did not want it. After a while I couldn't even think about taking it. Even when I forced it down I would throw it up. Obviously I still wasn't hungry, but I was also unable to continue the program.

Here's my question: Has anyone else A)heard of this diet, b)tried this diet, c)experienced this problem, d)overcome this problem, e)got any advice?

There is a ton of stuff on the diet and Seth Roberts so enjoy reading. I think it's a great plan that is cheap, natural and simple. I look forward to other's feedback"

OOLONG TEA

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/07/2008: Missy from Toronto, Ontario, , Canada writes: "I researched a tea product that was promoted on Opra as a miracle weight loss. It turns out it was Oolong Tea. I purchased Organic Oolong for myself and a few of my friends as a gift and we all started drinking a couple of cups a day. Lo & Behold, we were loosing weight without changing our sensible diet and without the laxative or diuretic effects of other weight loss teas. People have been commenting to all of us that our faces look slimmer and all of us have lost inches from our waistlines. You will notice very quick results provided you eat a sensible diet. Avoid fried, greasy foods, pastries and watch the weight easily fall off!"

RAW FOOD DIET

2 YEA

[YEA]  03/21/2009: Laura from Marathon, WI USA writes: "I signed up for a 10-day raw food cleanse and extended it to 14 days, incorporating green smoothies (yum!!!) I noticed a big difference in how I felt as well as how I looked. My tight pants were loose on me in this very short period of time. I did not break the cleanse well, and ended up in bad habits. Maybe if I had been working out I would have stuck with the healthier life style. But I ended up going back to my "old" self. I'm getting back on the bandwagon because I know it works and it's the best for my body. Wish I could convince my family to want to follow along. Makes it difficult when someone else brings home junk food. My will power has little to be desired!!!"

[YEA]  03/07/2008: Sharon from Soldotna, Alaska writes: "I am obese not from overeating, but due to stressors that I did not handle well and that caused a major stroke a year ago. Since then, I have made a major change in my diet even though I had eaten very well before without white flours, sugars and the other problem foods for many years. Now I am eating raw vegan foods and have not only finally dropped almost 40 pounds but my blood sugar levels are down to the mid-90s. I credit eating a raw food lifestyle with all this! My thyroid numbers are also in the more normal range! Lots of good changes that I believe eating a raw food lifestyle made happen."

READER COMMENTS

12/30/2008: Gean from Salina, KS writes: "I would like to know if it is important to ingest fat daily (good fats such as coconut oil, etc.), or if the body can use stored fat to process the fat soluble vitamins. For those who have plenty of stored fat, would it be better to go on a fat free diet for a while, as long as one eats healthy foods and not the toxic processed diet foods? Thank you very much."

01/01/2009: Rosy from Orlando, Fl replies: "Never go on a fat free diet, or low fat. Use healthy cold pressed oils. Your body needs fats to work properly. Stored fat will not work the same way, as it has changed forms, and functions. Stored fat if used will be for energy, and only after muscle, and other tissues."

01/20/2007: Jatarra from Fort Myers, FL writes: "I hate to say it but I was raised on a the poverty level of society as I was growing up. My grandmother would do everything she could to keep our family fed and and clothed. She would buy good food, but also some not so healthy choices. Like hot dogs by the pack, and soda by the Liter, because she felt it was cost efficient. So we would normally end up having to buy food that would last the whole month, which included pork, hams, corn dogs, and etc...

If your a child being raised in a crowded home, you usually have to eat what's served on your plate regardless of nutrition. Well what's good for the goose is not necessary good for the gander. Just because Sean is 16 and is a growing boy who play football, doesn't mean 10 year old Sherry can eat a pound of potatoes smothered in butter and a huge sloppy Joe.

I was overweight most of my life. I used to be 180 pounds when I was 16, now I'm down to 145. It's all because I change my life style. Growing up I was mentally depressed. When you are depressed you tend to eat more, because your trying to fulfill an emotional need with food, but all it does is lead to weight gain. Also not having healthy choices leads to bad health. We also eat when were bored, if you having nothing to occupy your mind having some food is one of the first things that tends to go on the I do list.

When I was a little girl I was sheltered and wasn't allowed to do much in the way of having a social life. My guardian was overly protective and gave me a lot negative self talks. I couldn't go to the neighbor's house because their were boys there, but my brothers could go just about anywhere they wanted and could roughhouse all they liked. Play sports, have friends, and participate in after school activities.

I came from an African American family. My family couldn't understand why I would eat so much and they would ridicule me because of my weight and size, and to this day their are lot of emotional scars left behind. I dread gaining and weight and I am constantly trying to get down to 125. It was all ignorance and I suffered alot for something I didn't cause or couldn't help.

The point of what I am trying to say is that children who are overweight cannot help because parents and guardians simply are not giving them right choices. It pains me to see older and younger alike who are in the category of obesity. I want to tell people so badly that the food choices they are making is what's causing this epidemic, as well emotional problems."

REMEDIES NEEDED

10/22/2009: Mrs Cloud from Dallas, Usa writes: "Several years ago, following a stressful move and while starting a stressful new job, I suddenly started packing on the pounds--thirty pounds in 6 months! I have always been naturally slender, could what I wanted, never dieted and never fluctuated more than a few pounds in weight. Now, five years later (and much less stress in my life!!), I am sixty pounds overweight despite daily exercise (walking 3-4 mi. at a brisk pace) and a very healthy diet (no junk food, almost everything is homemade, no sweets, no sodas or sugary drinks). My doc determined that I was borderline hypothyroid but that does not seem to explain why I cannot lose weight...I am so frustrated.

I recently started 50 mg per day Iodoral on the theory that fluoride may be the problem.

Any other advice from readers would be greatly appreciated!"

10/23/2009: Sharik from Arcata, California replies: "To Mrs. Cloud from Dallas:

Simply because your blood test says you're "borderline hypo" does NOT mean that one size fits all! Talk to your Dr. about trying Synthroid (I hope that will pass the site, as there are other pills out there that don't work as well). It's just about the only pill I do recommend. My blood tests always say I'm low on my dosage, but if I take more, I find myself crawling across the ceiling. (As in very hyper.) We were not punched out by a cookie cutter and each person has the responsibility of fighting for his/her health and what is best for them. I have Hashimoto's disease, and have been dealing with this for over half my life (I'm 67), and it certainly sounds like that might be the problem. There isn't anything out there in the natural world I have found (and I've looked!) that is safe and effective for thyroid problems, but the Synthroid has worked for me for over 33 years.

Wouldn't hurt to drink and cook with distilled water. It's been found that there's a lot more in your water than they report, all of it bad. I get mine by the gallon at my local grocery store.

Hope this helps.
Peace, Sharik"

10/23/2009: Mrs Cloud from Dallas, Tx replies: "Hi Sharik,

Thanks so much for your kind reply. Yes, I have been taking Synthroid for almost 2 years. It reduced the antibodies. That is the only reason I was diagnosed borderline--I had antibodies even though my numbers looked ok for TSH. Anyway, I recently stopped the meds because they do not make me feel better and I am now more than 20 lbs heavier than when I started them. I gained five pounds this week alone and I have no idea how! It was very stormy so I did not do my morning walk and we had family in town so I had a few more beer and wine than usual, but even my dad says he cannot believe I do not lose weight because I eat very little compared to my skinny family.

Thank you again for your comments. I am trying 50 mg Iodoral and ACV diluted in warm water each morning with honey and cinnamon (instead of coffee). Cooking with coconut oil or taking it in yogurt.

I am at wit's end...."

10/24/2009: Sharik from Arcata, California replies: "To Mrs. Cloud of Dallas:

If you have antibodies, you have Hashimoto's disease, and nasty little disorder where the body in effect becomes allergic to its OWN thyroid hormone. It will produce antibodies against its own thyroid tissue. (I come from a long line of sufferers.) Have you had an iodine absorption test? Taking iodine in any form (I prefer kelp and iodized salt) doesn't do any good if the thyroid can't absorb it

As to the Synthroid, it can take as much as 6 months to find the correct dosage (it took my mother almost two years, but that was back in the 50's) and the dosage doesn't always remain the same so that you have to adjust it over time (both up and down). If I could recommend a book that I use (always) it might help you understand Hashimoto's. It's called 'Prescription for Nutritional Healing' by Phyllis A. Balch (EC: I am in no way connected to the writing, publishing or selling of the book.) There is a nasty little side effect of an underactive thyroid called myxedema coma and is exactly what it sounds like. Poor Mom would lie down for an afternoon nap, go into a coma and have to be taken to the hospital for a day or two. This happened on a regular basis during the two years it took for the Dr.s to find the right dosage, but don't forget, that was almost 50 year ago and, hopefully, things ( and medicine) have improved somewhat. Although you couldn't prove it by me..... Oh, by the way. Mom gained weight during this period, but lost it all when they found the right dosage. But she had to cut out the beer to do it.

If you would like to correspond privately, ask EC for my email. I'll be glad to help any way that I can.
Peace, Sharik"

RHODIOLA

1 YEA

[YEA]  05/10/2009: Patricia from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada writes: "I've been taking Rhodiola for 5 weeks and have increased energy and have lost about 15 pounds that I have been struggling with for the last 5 years. I have had breast cysts that have disappeared and my memory has definitely improved. 6 weeks ago I attempted to climb the 7 flights of stairs to my condo when the elevator was out. I had to stop and rest at each floor. Today I take the stairs instead of the elevator without stopping at all.

When I started taking Rhodiola, my daughter had told me about it but I didn't know much about the herb only that it would give me an energy boost that I really needed. The only negative factor that I have experienced is insomnia, so now I make sure that I don't take the herb after about 3pm. I take 2 - 250 mg per day. One in the morning as soon as I get up with 10 oz of warm distilled water and the juice of 1/2 freshly squeezed lemon, and one around 3pm at my work breaktime with lots of water."

SIMPLE DIET

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/06/2006: Mary from Nevada City writes: "I used lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne about 15 years ago to try and lose weight - I did it for three days and I was about ready to line my kids up against the wall and fire. Not really - wouldn't do that...But this made me so hungry and edgy! It is not for everyone. I gave up and just went back to eating. Plus - these radical plans ALWAYS backfired on me and whacked my metabolism eve more - so it was even harder to lose weight. I still deal with weight issues (about 20 pounds over) but I find that I lose weight the best is when I am actually trying to heal my asthma...So - it is a simple diet - mostly fresh fruits and veggies - or steamed, plus an egg or two and one serving of brown rice a day. So - when I am sick with asthma -I REALLY want to be well and I stick with this and I lose weight. This time I need to stick with it past the asthma season. Plus I am adding in kelp now- this should help all three issues: Thyroid, asthma and weight."

TEA AND AN APPLE

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/31/2007: Christian from Woodland Hills, CA writes: "Ok, i usually eat many but sometimes when i rather use the computer i don't eat. Once i was hungry but did not eat. So instead i just drank some water and ate an apple, after two hours i didn't feel hungry. Since my mother brought some food i ate and when did i felt really full!! You should try this, because your stomach part gets thinner when u get hungry and u feel full. If you do this continuously, your eating habits will be less and less and less."

WALKING

1 YEA

[YEA]  07/08/2009: Gean from Salina, Kansas writes: "I just wanted to mention that every time I have an exercise program where I walk every morning for 1/2 hour I lose weight. When I get confident and start running, I start to gain weight. This has happened a half dozen times so I'm sure it's not coincidence. Like I just read from Dr. Mercola, the assertion that to lose weight one has to simply eat less and move more is not true. It may be true for some people, but if you have weak adrenals you will put on weight (fatty inches esp. around the waist) with aerobic exercise. Once (a few years ago) I tried eating next to nothing for 2 months and lost about 2 lbs. Then I started taking licorice root (and eating properly) and lost 7 lbs. in one week. Obviously it's all hormonal related. Of course, if someone is eating junk food all day it would be the obvious place to start to cut that out. But I know people who could eat all day and be all the skinnier for it. Some are related to me. So if you eat a healthy diet and exercise but still can't lose the inches, maybe you're exercising too hard and eating too little. Moderation in all things!"

YAM NOODLES

2 YEA

[YEA]  02/09/2009: Yvae from London, UK writes: "Shiratake Japanese 100% konjak asian yam noodle is 97pc water and 3pc fibre. It has the uncanny property of expanding in the stomach to give the effect of being very full. It is 20cal per 100g. I find it useful for weight loss and constipation. Also for piles as the fibe is very smooth at the exit end, compared with other products such as bran does not aggravate the situation at a time one should increase fibre intake. After a lifetime of discomfort I think this may well be the ultimate gut prouct as it is a meal, noodle comes wet- in a water bag, so preparation is minimal. Please note it has no nutritional value at all so add to meals with care to ensure balance. Carried by oriental shops and health shops, Japanese and Korean in particular, though Chinese will know what you mean at the very least."

[YEA]  02/10/2009: AC from West Midlands, England replies: "If you don't live near an Asian grocer and want to buy Shirataki noodles OR konnyaku jelly (that's the startchy form of shirataki, which can be added to soups, stews, and stir fried) online, here are a few resources:

If you're in the US or Canada: http://www.asianfoodgrocer.com/category/shirataki-noodles
If you live in Europe or the UK: http://www.japancentre.com/

Please read the directions on the packet, many shirataki and konnyaku noodles give off a strange odor and need to be boiled before hand.

Please also consider this a yay for shirataki and konnyaku! Both are very high in fibre, contain no gluten, are very low-carbohydrate and either free or extremely low in calories."
