Kennel Cough Remedies

Any dog owner whose pet has become infected with kennel cough (or bordetella bronchiseptica) knows what a struggle it can be to treat the problem once the virus has set in.' It is likely that your pet has contracted kennel cough if he or she was recently boarded in a kennel or has been in contact with another dog harboring the virus.' Kennel cough is an air borne virus, which can be carried in aerosol droplets from the discharge of an infected animals sneeze or cough or via direct contact with another animal.

Kennel cough can produce a number of symptoms including a dry, hacking cough, gagging responses, sneezing, and when the virus progresses can result in fever, nasal discharge and the coughing up of mucus.  Without treatment, kennel cough can escalate into a very serious infection or even pneumonia.

Effectively handling kennel cough is much easier when treatment is administered soon after the initial development of symptoms.  There are several well-known and very efficient homeopathic treatments for the problem.

In the beginning stages, if your dog is suffering from a dry and retching cough use a treatment of Drosera.  If the cough has progressed into a more rattling or phlegmy sounding cough, try using Dulcamara.  For a serious cough, which is producing mucus, use Coccus.  All three remedies are great for battling cough symptoms.

GARLIC, ECHINACEA

[YEA]  09/05/2009: Ellen from Fort Bragg, Ca writes: "All 6 dogs on the 2 properties got kennel cough (dog colds) at the same time. The 3 next door got "a deal" from the vet because of 3 at once and were only charged $65.00. The 2 on my side I treated with a clove of garlice (put down their throat with a finger) and a 1/2 dropperful of Echinacea for 3 days and then just the garlic for another 7 days. All doctors have you take your meds for 10 days so as not to grow a superbug. Use garlic as an antibiotic/antiviral and treat it as such. It works. And tea tree oil is the best infection fighter for anyone, anything I've put it on. Real easy to apply in an open animal would with a dropper. Ellen A."

WOW This is the craziest think I have ever seen. 3 drops of hydro peroxide and honey in 8 oz of water for my 15lb min pin and in less than a minute she is cured. The best part other than the cure is no 200.00 dollar bill or 40.00 prescription. Thanks"

[YEA]  11/21/2008: Tom from Atlanta, GA writes: "The hydrogen peroxide for the cough works, but I did not want to wait for my dogs to drink the water as most recommended.. Since I have 3 dogs and am aware of the cough spreading to the others so I sterilized all the water bowls and applied 3 drops of the 3% peroxide with 2 teaspoons of honey for each 8 oz. glass and filled their bowls. Then I made the same mixture in a 4 oz. glass and I took out their toothbrush and brushed their teeth gently most of the time they just kept licking the brush. All coughing stopped immediately. If any coughing continues I'll brush again."

[YEA]  11/25/2008: Anna from Houston, Texas replies: "3% HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

[YEA]  03/25/2009: June from San Pedro, Ca replies: "Ok we tried the peroxide and honey addition to the water when I had a rescue foster come into our household. I heard her sneeze and knew what was coming. I have my 4 dogs also and was really a bit worried. I added the peroxide and honey daily for a few weeks. My foster only had a mild bout with the kennel cough, my three eldest never got sick. Two had had K.C. before when I got them, one had never ever had it, she and the other two did not get it. BUT my youngest did. Sooo I guess it worked for 3 of mine and not the forth. I still would recommend giving it a try because I only had one get sick."

04/27/2009: Cbrillem from Miami, FL replies: "i have a 12lb 3 month old puppy. I didnt want to give him peroxide so i gave him half a tbsp of robbitusin DM. every 9 hrs or so. After only 2 dys he stopped coughing . I also applied honey mixed with a little lemon juice directly in his mouth everytime he started coughing too much."

[YEA]  10/27/2008: Shanaex1414 from Stockton, Ca writes: "Thank you for your Kennel Cough hydrogen peroxide remedy!! I put just three drops of 3% peroxide in a medium-sized bowl. At first my doggie wouldn't drink it, even with honey in it, so I added more water to dilute it more - sensitive noses they've got! Then he drank it.

Well, he's coughed just a little after that but definitely no more middle-of-the-night coughing immediately after his first dose!

Then when he did cough a little from excitement or whatever, I'd have him sit, and I'd cover his nostrils, as suggested. He stopped coughing right away! A couple times, he'd stop just after I'd have him sit! :p
He even stared at me after like, "What did you do, mom? Thank you!" :)

Now I'm about to try molasses for his other main problem, separation anxiety, thanks to your website!!

God bless you for saving me vet bills!"

11/07/2008: Sarah from Harrison Twp, Mi replies: "Kennel Cough: Do you know if the peroxide also helps with runny noses? My dog now has this symptom along with the cough. We've been to the vet twice already!"

11/15/2008: Lea from Pierpont, OH replies: "With the hydrogen peroxide for the cough...does it have to be diluted in water or can I put 3 drops on food and give it to my dog? Also, is it 3 drops of 3% peroxide? My dog is a 13 year old terrier mix with a cough that he has had for quite some time. I took him to the vet thinking the worst, and even the vet thought it was his heart when he heard him cough. But after listening to his heart he said it was very strong. He gave him a shot and some pills. Although his cough did get softer/quieter, he still has it. I don't think it is kennel cough because I have 5 dogs and he is the only one with the cough. Does the peroxide treatment work for other types of coughs? Would it be safe just to try it?"

09/08/2009: Michelle from Matawan, Nj replies: "I adopted my 4-5 yr old yorkie from the shelter just over a week ago, they said he has kennel cough and the vet confirmed. He doesn't cough that much.. in the mornings and sometimes at night he has wheezing fits and brings up some mucus - which i wish they had the smarts to spit it out instead of swallowing it. other than that - he sneezes when we go outside for his walks. since this seems to be a pretty mild case, does that make him less contagious to other dogs? i read that they can "shed" the virus for months even after they have no more symptoms, so do any of these remedies lessen the time that they can actually spread KC? I don't like keeping my poor baby quarantined, i want him to stay social!"

09/29/2008: Candi from Tampa, Florida writes: "HELP:
I have 5 dogs, 4 are infected with Kennel Cough. PLease explain sterilizing the air with a humidifer?? I have been treating with Robitussin DM and baby aspirin. My smallest went to the vet and is on antibiotic Clavamox. She caught original virus and she is the worst. She does not want to eat. How do I do the peroxide method for small dogs?? The sickest is 4.5, I have 2 at 8 lbs. and one at 1l lbs, and one that is 12 years and weighs 12.5 lbs. but is showing no signs. I am at wits end, my vet is being unreasonable on treatment costs so I am trying to handle this alone. My lack of sleep is not helping and now I read that I can catch this in a form of respitory infection, is this true?? Any suggestions, advice or helpful hints I will gladly listen to. Thanks, Candi"

11/25/2008: Anna from Houston, Texas replies: "No i read on many sites that, human can not catch kennel cough, only animal to animal ONLY in a ENCLOSED area, and is true because i have had my dog little bits for 13 years he is a back yard dog and he has been with my other dogs and neither my self or my other dogs have caught anything."

[YEA]  07/27/2008: Judy from Bricelyn, Minnesota writes: "I had bought a new Chihuahua puppy and within the first few days home, he developed a deep hacking cough (kennel cough), so bad he could not sleep. He only weighed 1.9 pounds so I did not want him vaccinated or put on antibiotics, but needed to stop the cough so he could sleep. I went on the internet and found many recommedations of hydrogen peroxide in water for it. I put about 3 drops of hydrogen peroxide in about a glass of water with some honey for sweetener and to coat his throat and immediately after drinking this he stopped coughing and slept. He only hacked once or twice after that, but not near as bad as before and by the next day he was well. One of my other dogs got it the next day and I tried it with her and it did the same thing, so I put it in my dogs water for a few days and my other 2 dogs never even got it. My daughter tried it too after having her dogs to a doggy daycare for a weekend and they came home coughing. It worked just as fast for her and has not returned. It was an absolute miracle. Now she puts it in their water for about 2 weeks before going to the doggy daycare and it prevents the kennel cough. After reading your site, I now know why it works, not just that it works. Thank you."

07/30/2008: Shannon from Olney, MD replies: "Where can I buy food grade hydrogen peroxide? I can only find the 3% drug store kind. I found a place to order it online but I really want to get it ASAP to try to cure my bulldogs kennel cough. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!! Thank you."

[YEA]  09/01/2008: Manon from Montreal, Quebec replies: "I live near Montreal and I have found a health store where they sell food-based hydrogen peroxide (a treatment for kennel cough). The store is called Centre Ki Nature & Sante. Two different locations 1: 997 Boul St. Jean, Pointe Claire 2: 4279 St. Denis Montreal, Quebec. I tried it on my 3 month old puppy and it works."

[YEA]  02/02/2008: Rebekah from Jacksonville, fl writes: "Kennel cough cured! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I tried the food grade hydrogen peroxide remedy. Just to be safe I diluted it to an extreme. I put 3 drops of the mixture in Shelby's water bowl and immediately (within a 2 days) she was almost completely cured. I had gone to a vet and was prescribed some expensive medicine that did NOT work at all. This natural remedy was nothing short of amazing!"

05/15/2008: Vanessa from Stuart, Forida replies: "Kennel Cough Remedies: Hi, seems to good to be truth, I started giving 3 drops on my dog's water bowl, To soon to determine if it works but now I would like to ask How long do I have to do this or it would be on a regular basis...., I really have my hopes up for this to works, it breaks my heart to see my little baby like and not be able to help her..... Thank you in advance."

09/13/2008: June from KC, KS replies: "A couple months ago a very wild stray kitten adopted us and our home. We already have 3 cats so she obviously felt very comfortable here. I've finally gotten her tamed and am able to be near her and hold her...took a couple months she was so wild. Anyway, I've noticed she has a dry cough...I'm wondering if it is heartworm but haven't yet been able to get her to the vet. (I don't usually have much luck with their "remedies" anyway.)

She arrived looking mangy and had lost all the hair off one ear, so I know she came to us with problems. Now her coat is shiny black and she is growing like a wild flower.

I'm going to treat her with h2o2 but I wondered if anyone else has successfully treated a cough in a cat?

Thanks."

[YEA]  01/20/2008: Aubrey from Boston, MA writes: "I was at a loss as to what to do for my little yorkie who was suffering from what I believed to' be kennel cough and I read others' feedback and the hydrogen peroxide really works! Within the first hour he showed a significant improvement. I also gave him a bit of honey to help ease the cough and the combination of the two have really been a life and a money saver!"

[YEA]  11/22/2007: anthony from cary, nc writes: "hey everyone.. i rescued a beagle named snoopy from wake county animal shelter a few months ago and when we brought him home he he would heev' and cough it was quite odd.. so i did the peroxide 3% from the store and mixed it in his water about 1 cap fulls twice a day .. after a week he was good and i have stopped the treatment the following week.. he's been great ever since.."

01/10/2008: Stephanie from Dallas, Texas replies: "Hi. My comment is to Anthony with Snoopy the rescued Beagle. We have 2 Beagles (Copper and Bailey). Snoopy may also be experiencing the 'reversed sneeze'. Both of my Beagles do this every once in a awhile - it's looks like kennel cough. It's almost like they're about to vomit (heeving and coughing). As directed by a vet, you just have to hold their nose closed, making them breathe through their mouth. Sometimes I have to help Bailey open his mouth. Copper is an old pro at it. This opens the air passage that is causing the heeving by releasing the pallet that is caught in the throat. It's hard to do, but it works every time."

08/09/2009: Giuliana from Miami, Florida replies: "I have a malshi (mix of maltese and shitzu) and he has been having that weird cough like he is chocking on something and then he stops..I dont know if that can be considered kennel cough or not. He doesn't sneeze but i did notice some nasal discharge. Should I just give him the hydrogen peroxide? and just to double check...the hydrogen peroxide has to be 3% or 35%?"

[YEA]  01/13/2007: Adrienne from Tarpon Springs, FL writes: "I have a 14 year old white boxer who developed kennel cough and after 2 vet visits and over 400 dollars later he was getting worse. I found info about food grade hydrogen peroxide curing kennel cough so my father in law got a bottle of it at a nature store and 3 days into giving it to my dog he is 50 percent better!!! I highly recommend it but do be careful on how much you give to much can be harmful. My dog weighs about 65 pounds and I give him 3 drops in 8 tablespoons of milk 3 times a day. Good Luck!!!!"

[YEA]  05/14/2006: Joanna from Dallas writes: "My 12 year old dog has had an intermittant cough for some months now. It may not be a cough but an irritated throat (which is what the vet saw). Every so often he would get up from his bed making a sound as though something were stuck in his throat. This happened several times a day. I solved this problem by adding 2 drops of food grade hydrogen peroxide to his water bowl. This choking/cough stopped within a day. If I forget it comes back the next day."

MULTIPLE REMEDIES

1 NAY

[NAY]  02/16/2009: Diane from Lakeland, FL writes: "Yorkie with breathing and coughing problems: I have a 10 year old Yorkie who is coughing quite a bit. She coughs like she is trying to get something up, but never does. Sometimes I can hear rattling when she breathes like there is liquid in there. After coughing she wheezes for a while. Usually activity causes her to cough. The vet had her on all types of meds, but they have not helped. I have tried ACV, H202, yogurt, acidopholus....and nothing seems to help. I hate for her to have such problems and would like to hear if you have any recommendations. The meds that the vet put her on just made her miserable. I would prefer to stay away from that."

NO-DYE BENADRYL

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/01/2008: Kelly from Memphis, Tennessee writes: "My Pomeranian, Holly, had kennel cough. WE used the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, but the cough would just get weaker. We then tried no-dye Benadryl in the the morning and at night. It works great she has a lot of energy during the day and at night she can sleep. We are going to do this remedy for another week so she can get better."

06/11/2008: Cathy from Woodridge, Canada replies: "To Kelly from Memphis- cough medicine. I have a Sheltie that has a cough. The Vet told me to give her Robitussin DM - he made a point of saying it had to be DM BUT I never thought to ask him how to get it down her. He gave me a syringe but its all over her bib and nothing in her mouth. I tried H202. Can't put it in her water dish...2 dogs and 2 cats drink the same water. Put in a dish of warm milk with a tsp of honey. She drank about 1/4 of it. I will try again later. "

OREGANO OIL

1 YEA

[YEA]  12/27/2007: Hilary from San Tan, Arizona writes: "100% Natural Oregano oil in capsules ; 2 capsules twice a day for a week or so, about 2 to 5 drops of oregano oil per capsule with a carrier agent like grape seed oil (about 12 drops). You can get the essential oil at most nature type food stores and the empty capsules. Within a few days you will notice a huge difference in your dog and within a week no more coughing and back to normal. You can also sterilize your home of germs and viruses by putting about 15 to 20 drops in a humidifier and running it. Your house will smell like a wonderful italian kitchen and the house will be sanitized!"
