PETS WHO EAT GRASS

06/24/2008: Dallas Reese from Hayesville, NC writes: "I have a question regarding my dog. Most often when I take him out to do his business, he wants to eat grass. What is the reason for this and should I be concerned? He eats a very good dog food. Thanks. Dallas"

SICK PUPPY, THROWING UP

05/15/2008: Jenny from crossville, Tennessee writes: "Hello, my aunt Kris told me to come to this site in specific about my puppy (Rookie) I can not figure out quite what is wrong with him, and my aunt said that you have helped her with home remedies in the past, she gave you a glowing recommendation and I am really beginning to lose hope with my puppy, please let me know if you might have any idea of what might be wrong with him. Thursday, May 15, 2008 7:44am : Gave 1.5 ml of pepto max 9:00am : Drank water, instantly threw up 10:10am : fed wet iams food w/dry mixed in 10:30am : fed wet iams food w/dry mixed in 10:35am : Threw up a lot! 11:55am : gave 1.5 ml of Pepto max Today he is really not doing so hot, he seems really lethargic and sick. Wet food mix = 1 egg yolk mixed with 2 tbs of Iams wet puppy food. Rookie seems to get sick most often while he is sleeping. He will be sound asleep and then wake up with a choke, then either heave and throw up or just heave and then fall back asleep. Sometimes he will instantly throw up, before he even has a chance to get up. I have fed him both elevated and on the ground and it doesn:t seem to make a difference.

The vets had originally said that perhaps he had a esophagus problem but I don't think that's it because he usually keeps the food down for an hour or so before getting sick. Also, when he throws up it is smelly and acidy, like it:s coming from the stomach, not the esophagus. Plus, the pepto seems to help, so for now I am going to keep him on it. I really want to make him better/ get him to survive, but I am currently in the process of buying a home, and we just had all the horses get their spring shots, plus I just finished paying off the surgery for my border collie puppy:s broken leg. So, I really don:t have the money to take this guy to the vet, unless it seems there is no other option (home remedies) and if it will cost me too much to fix him, I am going to have to put him down. I am really fallen for this puppy, and if you think you might know what the problem is (if it for sure involves the vet) if you think it might not be a super expensive surgery, I may be able to take him. Or if I can get him to survive for a month or two, until my finances calm down, that would be wonderful. Because at the rate he is going, he is going to waste away into nothing. Thank you so very much! Also, I don:t know if this has anything to do with it, or if it:s just from him being so weak, but when he walks he looks like one of those robot dogs, slow and stiff. He runs almost like one too, but again, I guess that could be from his lack of weight/muscle/strength. Thanks! -Jenny"

05/16/2008: K from Ohio replies: "Response to Jenny (05/15/2008): Hi, I just saw on the news here in Ohio that some dry dog foods have salmonella. I don't know if this is what's wrong with the sick puppy but it may be worth looking into. You should STOP giving your dog that particular food."

05/28/2008: Jennifer from Toronto, Canada replies: "In response to Sick Puppy. Whatever you do don't feed your puppy Iams!!!! This food is not good. I was feeding it to my cat and my cat developed FUV. He could not urinate and had to be catherized. Here is Toronto, we have alot of greedy vets whose best interest is not the animal. The first vet claimed she could not catherize my cat and wanted my permission to send my cat to Guelph UNiversity. I refused because I knew that any animal who goes there DIES. They are student practioners. The vet was reluctant to give me my cat back and wanted to know where else I would take him. I gave her the name of another Vet and they released my cat. When I came to this Vet, he said he has to operate and cut open my cat to release the gravel. I quickly took my cat to another vet nearby who immediately catherized my cat. All Vet fees cost me $1,800. Anyways, this honest Vet told me that Iams is not agreeable for all cats - some get blockage. It's awful knowing that Iams is actually poisonous and harmful to our pets!"

08/07/2008: Durelle from Madeira Beach, Fla replies: "I HAD SOME OF THE SAME ISSUES WITH MY PUPPY. I FOUND THAT HE HAD SOME BACTERIA THAT HAD TO BE TREATED BY ANTIBIOTICS ALSO THE FOOD HE MIGHT BE ALLERGIC TO. BEFORE YOU GIVE HIM YOUGURT, YOU MUST MAKE SURE HE IS LACTOSE TOLERANT. I PUT MY DOG ON WOLF CUB FROM SOLID GOLD AND A PRODUCT THEY HAVE CALLED D-ZYME. THAT PUPPY NEEDS TO BE WATCHED FOR DEHYDRATION AND RUNNY STOOLS. SOME FOODS HAVE NO NUTRIONAL VALUE. SOLID GOLD IS THE BEST. ALSO BOILED RICE CAN HELP WITH THROWING UP. TRY A LITTLE WITH SOME BOILED CHICKEN AND NOTHING ELSE FOR AWHILE .THIS IS A SERIOUS THING FOR PUPPIES TRYING TO ESTABLISH THEIR FOOD. YOU HAVE TO TRY DIFFERENT FOODS SOMETIMES BUT IF HE RESPONDS BY GETTING SICK STOP FEEDING THAT FOOD IMEDIATELY."
