<description>[SIDE EFFECTS] Aq from Oakland, Ca writes: "Hello, I am an extremely healthy 39 year old (I\'m an acupuncturist and herbalist) with terrible gum recession (but no redness, swelling, or inflammation, and perfect hygiene). I had braces as a teenager, and my recession started shortly after. A month ago, I found out I had two deep pockets (one 7mm and one 8mm) and the periodontist scheduled me for surgery on May 24th. I\'m trying to close the pockets and reverse the recession in order to avoid surgery and heal my gums. So, I started oil pulling (just under one month ago). 20 minutes twice per day. I also started brushing and flossing after each meal, instead of flossing only once per day and brushing 2-3 times per day.

After week 1, I started having some tooth pain, deep in the roots. After week 2, that pain got more severe. By week 3, I started feeling very upset... That something is wrong... I should not have 24/7 tooth pain for two weeks! I had never had that kind of tooth pain before. So I stopped oil pulling and went back to flossing only once per day and brushing twice per day (I am using Ecodent natural tooth powder), thinking maybe I was over-treating.

The pain is unrelentless. Although I have not oil pulled for 3 days, my teeth still hurt (the upper and lower front teeth). They have hurt pretty much constantly for two and a half weeks. Also, it seems like my recession is worse. This has me extremely upset, and depressed for the first time in my life.

Can you help explain what is happening? It feels that oil pulling has made my condition worse and caused unrelentless pain that I never had before.

By the way, I have one amalgam filling in a molar towards the back and one non-amalgam filling in a molar on the other side (I have had two cavities in my lifetime).

Thanks in advance for your insights.

I do not know if it has anything special that it is good for... But it seems to have the same positive effects overall as seseme or sunflower oil. I do not like the taste of seseme or the consistancy of sunflower. If anyone else has used pumkin seed oil too and has any more info on the details of its possible benefits please let me know.

<description>[YEA] Dani from Adelaide, Australia writes: "I have suffered with very sensitive teeth for years and avoided going to the dentist for fear of the pain that comes with a checkup and clean. That is until I started oil pulling with coconut oil. After a week of oil pulling for approx 10 mins a day 5 days a week all sensitivity was gone and I stopped using sensitive toothpaste. My teeth became whiter and most soreness went, I just had a very slight tenderness around the my bottom 4 front teeth. So I went to the dentist expecting cavities and was told that there were none and I was doing a good job cleaning my teeth despite avoiding the dentist for many years. After having a proper clean my teeth look and feel amazing. The oil pulling sorted out my sensitivity and improved my gums and oral health so that I didn\'t suffer pain or feel embarrassment at the dentist. I will continue to oil pull so that sensitivity doesn\'t return. Thanks again earth clinic

<description> Murray from Melbourne, Australia writes: "Research indicates that Sesame and Sunflower oils are the best two for OP. I also read that Sesame Sesame seed oil is absorbed quickly and penetrates through the tissues to the very marrow of the bone. It is said to enter into the blood stream through the capillaries and circulates. The liver does not sweep sesame seed oil molecules from the blood, accepting those molecules as friendly. As I am wanting healing for a chronic form of leukemia this circulation to the bone marrow is potentially beneficial. The challenge is this: When I OP with Sunflower oil for 20 minutes it turns white but not when I OP with Sesame oil. I therefore tried a 50/50 blend of Sunflower/Sesame oils for 20 minutes and it DID turn white. My question: Is there benefits from blending the two oils? Will I get the benefits to my bone marrow from the Sesame oil if it is blended with Sunflower oil? Are there dangers in blending these two particular oils or things I should be aware of? Thanks in advance :-)

<description>[YEA] Peachytechgirl from Atlanta, Ga writes: "I wanted to comment and say that oil pulling with organic extra virgin Olive oil has worked for me in the 2 short days that I have tried it. I am very glad I found this website.
I suffer from standard sinus problems and I\'ve found that I flush my sinuses multiple times hourly. 2 days ago, I averaged maybe 5 sinus flushes per hour (using saline spray). Then I tried oil pulling.
Day one after starting oil pulling, I flushed my sinuses maybe once an hour. Day two, I\'ve barely flushed at all. I can breatheeee!!! I can inhale and exhale and feel deep clean breaths in my nasal cavities.
Regarding oil pulling for teeth... I have one amalgam filling and was hesitant to begin oil pulling. After research on various websites, I found that other people reported oil pulling with fillings and didn\'t experience issues. The general understanding is that if you do experience issues with your fillings, there was pre-existing damage anyway. I visit the dentist regularly and I know that my fillings are entact, so I went ahead and began my routine.
I have not experienced any metallic tastes or other abnormalities. I will send an update if I do. Despite only starting this routine within the last 2 days, my teeth are shiny. I floss regularly, and I don\'t experience bleeding, but my gums are slightly swollen. Since I\'ve started pulling, I\'ve noticed that my gums don\'t feel swollen anymore. They feel very healthy.
Here is my routine:
I oil pull first thing in the morning with 1TBL/3tsp of evoo. (The oil that I use is standard and found in the organic section of my grocery store. ) I typically pull for 10-15 minutes. I can really feel the change of the oil in my mouth once I reach the end of the swishing period.
I spit it out, and immediately rinse with warm water. I brush my teeth with a tooth powder solution consisting of baking soda and sea salt, and then I gargle again with the remaining warm water (with some of the tooth powder mixed in). I then gargle one more time with just regular warm water to ensure I\'ve cleaned my mouth thoroughly.
In the evenings I floss and gargle with warm water and baking soda/sea salt. In the 2 short days that I\'ve oil pulled, I\'ve noticed that my floss is removing more plaque than before (despite not changing eating habits), so I am definitely happy with the results thus far.
If I do experience any negative effects, I will send an update, but overall I am very happy so far with my oil pulling routine.

<description>[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] Tbs from London writes: "Hello all! I started oil pulling about 1 month ago after reading this site - thank you for such an information rich source to read about OP. On to my story with OP.
I am not one to shy away from a challenge so the \'healing crisis\' haven\'t detered me, but I must say they have been intense!
Initially I started to work on my mouth, I have had braces and plates and noticed that my teeth were moving very quickly, I also had receeding gums which my dentist told me was from pressure of my bite. I immediately noticed an improvement in my oral health, teeth which felt loose tightened up and gums are growing back and teeth do look lighter. I don\'t need to wear my plate at night like I used to!
Secondly, I had cystic acne when I was younger and went onto roaccutane for it (evil medicine) which worked but I would still have the occasional breakout appear. The oil pulling went straight to this next and I found myself breaking out severely, I knew this was part of the healing crisis so continued, that cleared up.
Next I broke out in rashes which looked like ring worm or dermatitis which I have never had when younger but now came in full force. I have been persisting with it and now doubled up oil pulling to morning and night - I now do 20 minutes each time, and brush with aryuvedic toothpaste as well - which I recommend.
The latest and by far most severe is a red scalp irritation - so my skin is hyper sensitive at this time - even though I was using aryuvedic shampoo. This has all been about the past week or so.
I would love to hear from other people who have encountered this, how long your healing crisis go for, etc. I know and can FEEL that this is all healing and working its way out so I am not giving up. I can also attest for the notable difference in overall emotions and mindset, the regular removal of toxins you aren\'t even aware of lightens the mood ridiculously well!
Good luck.

<description>[YEA] Samara from Manchester, Yorkshire, England writes: "Hi all, I am new to this site but I found it a few months ago during my journey and my search to better health which I started a long time ago. I came across earthclinic when researching alternative/natural remedies that I look for when I want to improve or add to my ongoing healthy lifestyle. I am a 43 yr old female, I live a very healthy lifestyle atm tho that wasnt always the case. I am 90% raw foodist, a non smoker, no alcohol, meat or fish. I call myself a non smoker because that is what I am, even though I smoked for 22 years. It has been 7 years since I stopped and smoking and drinking.

I came across oil pulling about 10 years ago and tried it, along with making my own toothpaste, but with other healthy ways taking precedence, oil pulling and making my own toothpaste kind of fell into disuse. I stuck to flouride free toothpaste for a time.

Now I am back again to oil pulling and I was serious about implementing it. After extensive research and reading and re reading I decided to buy some of the oil that called me and set about making my own toothpaste, but this time to make it and stick to it.

I have been using pure, organic, unrefined cold pressed sesame oil to pull every single morning and every nite before I sleep. I have slightly receding gums and some slight brown stains on my teeth from smoking for 22 years. My morning and evening ritual consists of oil pulling with the sesame oil while running the shower. Then when I step into the shower, I take another swig and oil pull for the entire duration of me washing my body. After I rinse my mouth out and the toothbrush I take my homemade toothpaste and smear it onto my brush and brush my teeth with it. I then take my home made mouthwash and swill and gargle and repeat that action, then swill again and rinse with clean water.

I oil pulled for 3 weeks before I made my toothpaste. ~the only thing I can say at the moment is that my teeth were and are still definately whiter, the stains are gradually fading. Thats great in itself! My toothpaste consists of very high grade non abrasive organic baking soda, some fine sea salt, 2 drops of peppermint essential oil, all mixed in with a little sesame oil which makes it a paste type consistency which I keep in the bathroom for my oral hygiene routine. The mouthwash consists of sterilised water from the kettle, with 2 drops of peppermint essential oil and 2 drops of tea tree oil which I shake before I gargle and swill twice. To finish I wanted to say my mouth feels absolutely amazing! The recipes I took from earthclinic site and from reading ppls posts. ~Even tho its a long post, I am unsure if all of it will get posted but thank you earthclinic for this brilliant site and to all the ppl who contribute to it.

<description>[YEA] Jenn from Cork, Ireland writes: "I have been oil pulling with olive oil for six months. I would use a different toothbrush for oil pulling and another for normal tooth brushing, and alway rinse my mouth out with warm salt water (one teaspoon in a small glass). I feel I am less likely to cross contaminate my mouth by using a different toothbrush.

My mouth feels much healther and my teeth are stronger, my dentist recommended for me to use a filler toothpaste as I have sensitive enamel. I choose to oil pull instead, and six months later my teeth are not as sensitive. I would recommend everyone giving it a try as it is inexpensive. It\'s just getting into a routine, like brushing and flossing teeth. Soon it becomes second nature. Of course you should follow your dentist advice also, I just made my own decision that suited me.

This morning I did more research and tried again, 20 mins. I rinsed with salt water after and brushed (I did neither the day before). I read through so many post and seems no one experienced bad breath AFTER, is this strange? I could only think it must be doing something if a tiny bit of olive oil is making that big of difference. My first day, noticed a lot of mucus on my tongue after the second pull. I brushed my teeth &amp; tongue after and rinsed with water as well. Most days I just have to blow my nose after &amp; maybe spit mucus once or twice. A couple days back, I felt a scratchy feeling near the back of my mouth towards the throat when I was done. I took out a flashlight &amp; saw a small round bump. Then I noticed what looked like mucus coming out of the throat area around the tonsils, coming through the flesh. Then, the next half hour I started coughing &amp; spitting up phlegm continuously. Then it stopped, the bump &amp; mucus was gone, and I had the best night\'s sleep I\'ve had in awhile. The changes I\'ve noticed so far include clear skin, I just don\'t seem to get acne now &amp; I\'ve had bouts of acne for over 25 years. My hair doesn\'t seem to split as bad as it used to. My teeth are whiter, tartar that has built up on the inside front of two of my lower teeth seems to be reducing, my gums are a lighter pink. I started breaking out in hives a few months back. I would feel like my heart was racing even though my pulse was normal or even slightly low. I would feel a burning inside that sometimes made me physically ill to my stomach. It looked like someone was drawing the world map on my back &amp; legs from the hives. Numerous sleepless nights as a result. It took me awhile to figure out that the triggers were all grains &amp; sulfites. I have had a couple of accidental exposures since the oil pulling &amp; the hives symptoms are significantly reduced. In fact, there was only a slight feeling of racing and a couple small areas of hives. I have also noticed the fibrocystic lumps in my breasts seem to be shrinking and this has been the most pain free period in the last couple weeks than I\'ve had for more than a year (although I should add that for the last few months I have also gone off all caffeine &amp; no bra). Finally, there is no arthritis in my hands so far this year. By this time, last year, my hands were always either stiff or sore. Oil pulling is quite literally changing my life. I have always tried to live healthy, my weight is reasonable, in fact I\'ve only had two periods of time my entire life where I was overweight. Once from childbirth and once from an injury that limited my movement for six months. However, despite all the healthy eating &amp; use of natural medicine, nothing has created as noticeable a difference as oil pulling has. I want to thank you; because it was while I was trying to search for remedies for hives that I came across oil pulling on this site. Thank you!
