[QUESTION] Jen from New York, Usa writes: "Hello!

Can someone please advise me on how safe is it to use shilajit everyday? It is one of the ingredients in a green food powder I am considering to take and I do not know much about shilajit. Is it an herb that is suggested to be used for a period of time only? I think I read somewhere that in texts it has been suggested for use for one year at the most.

Thanks!"

The_phoenix from Townsville, Australia writes: "The Fulvic Acid (FA) story is quite a long story so I will have to shorten it, for this forum, and break it into sections, which I have done via some brief Q&A's at the bottom of this post.

Humic Acid and Fulvic acid are components of Humin (Humus) which is the end result of the microbial breakdown of plant waste (most likely anaerobic). Probably we could find them anywhere that plant waste is rotting, even in a sealed plastic bag of old lawn clippings.

Typically, Humins mined for medicinal use are derived from Humic Shale that has been trapped under the ground for long periods of time (probably it was subjected to pressure, and sealed off by clay, or other geological structures, that allowed the large depositions to form over time).

In nature Humic Acid/Fulvic Acid is a brown liquid comprised of macromolecules i.e. very long molecules of smaller chemical sub-units that are loosely bound together. The nature of the chemical bond can vary depending on PH, constituents and the environment. The chemistry of the Humins has not been widely studied, particularly in regards to healing properties, so the exact chemical properties are either not known, or vary, depending on the source. Typically the plant material is broken down into compounds like sugars, amino-sugars, aliphatic and phenolic organic acids. The dominant functional groups which contribute to surface charge and reactivity of humic substances are phenolic and carboxylic groups.

In the soil Humins have the property of retaining moisture, stabilizing PH and providing many sites that can bind minerals, like Magnesium, Calcium, Sodium and Potassium etc (this prevents essential minerals from being leached away and makes them available to plants). Some researchers also claim that plants aborb organic compounds e.g. the salts of Carboxlic Acid, and that within the plant they perform 'higher' chemical functions analagous to enzyme/hormonal chemicals in humans.

Humic Acid and Fulvic acid are different substances:

- Fulvic Acid is formed in intermediatry humus i.e. where breakdown of the plants has not proceeded to completion
- Humic Acid occurs in humus that has completed the cycle of degradation (it is stable and can remain unchanged for centuries under the right conditions)
- they are not chemically distinguished (by formula) but rather by their properties i.e. they break down differently depending on whether they are in an acid or alkali solution
- Fulvic acid breaks down in any PH solution, weak or strong, while Humic Acid is only soluble in PH specific solutes (this suggests that Fulvic Acid is the more suitable of the two for human use and that it would be more bioavailable).
- in solution they break down into the component units and the exact nature of the constituents varies depending on the product and where it comes from (possibly no two batches are exactly the same, even from the same mine).

They lend themselves to the possibility of being bio-synthesized, as a product of plant matter, microbes and possibly soil (clay).

This process is mirrored in the human body, which is not surprising since MANKIND is a product of evolution i.e.Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA) are also produced, within the intestinal tract, from the action of the gut flora and fauna (the Zoo in the stomach) on plant matter. In fact the lower human intestine performs all of the functions, in the body, that Humus performs in the wild (digestion of plant matter to produce organic substances, PH balance, water retention, binding of useful minerals, transport and bioavailability of minerals).

For example (from Wikipedia):

"Short-chain fatty acids are a sub-group of fatty acids with aliphatic tails of less than six carbons. They include: Acetic acid, Propionic acid, Isobutyric acid, Butyric acid, Isovaleric acid, Valeric acid, Caproic acid, Lactic acid and Succinic acid.

Short-chain fatty acids, just as medium-chain fatty acids, are taken up directly to the portal vein during lipid digestion, in contrast to long-chain fatty acids, which are packed into chylomicrons and enter lymphatic capillaries and enter the blood first at the subclavian vein.

Short-chain fatty acids are produced when dietary fiber is fermented in the colon."

Note that the smaller chain SCFA's are water soluble and hence can enter the blood stream directly (probably they need to be bound to a mineral cation to act as the chemical key that promotes transportation across locked membranes).

Intestinal production, by microbial action, is not limited to SCFA, however, and there is a great range of compounds produced, including some alcohol e.g. ethanol.

Note that in the gut anaerobic bacterium, like Clostridium Sporogenes, are responsible for producing a chemical storehouse that is readily available for absorbtion into the blood stream (interestingly bio-synthesis of Acetic Acid is a take-off from nature whereby fermentation converts sugars to ethanol and then bacteria convert this to acetic acid which contains the biologically useful carboxyl group).

Fortunately the activities of the gut microbes are self limiting and this keeps the byproducts within a narrow range e.g. as more SCFA's are produced, and the gut PH raises, the bacteria involved in this process are PH sensitive and production slows (other wise we would produce over acidic conditions, and affect the body, or maybe end up drunk from too much alcohol in the gut).

MOTHER NATURE IS WISE BEYOND THE IMAGINATION OF MANKIND.

Q. Is there a difference between Humic Acid and Fulvic Acid for remedial use?

A. The answer to this question is not known but it is most likely that Fulvic Acid will break down more easily making it more available to the body.

Providing that Humic Acid does break into its constituent parts, in the body, there is no way of distinguishing exactly what compounds will be available with either form (we can only generalise as to what they contain and how they might work).

Q. Where can I buy Fulvic Acid?

A. It is quite readily available, via the internet, and it is a personal choice as to where, and what, to buy.

My recommendations are:

- buy products made in the USA (it has a larger economic base, and strong regulation, so the liklihood of obtaining a superior product is greater than if it is bought from exotic locations/providers)
- it is preferable to deal with a supplier who provides a certified laboratory analysis (be aware that some products might be tainted by heavy metals).
- buy a product that has a high concentration of FA
- buy a product intended for human consumption (Humus can contain bacteria and viruses etc)

Google for:

[fulvic acid laboratory analysis]
[fulvic acid analysis]
[fulvic acid analysis functional groups]
[fulvic acid technical data]

Q. What are the health benefits of taking Fulvic Acid as a remedy?

A. The benefits are not known.

- it is assumed that the macromolecules will breakdown, into smaller compounds, in the stomach or later in the digestive cycle, so taking FA would be similar to supplementing Short Chain Fatty Acids plus other compounds typically found in the gut of a normal (average) person.

Note that the exact constiuents of FA and what form they take after they enter the GI tract is not known.

- depending on the product, Fulvic Acid solutions can be rich in minerals, including trace minerals, so it can have the same benefits as other mineral/trace mineral supplements.

Note that a full spectrum of minerals and trace minerals can be obtained, at a better price, from sea salt.

Q. Is there any health benefit to be gained from supplementing, for example, SCFA's?

A. In the average person i.e. a person with normal gut flora and fauna, the body is well supplied with SCFA's provided the diet contains adequate amounts of plant food.

Q. What is the function of the SCFA's in the body?

A. Using Carboxylic Acid as the example i.e. the functional organic Carboxylic Group (-COOH) that is predominate in Acetic Acid:

- fruit, like Apples and Oranges etc contain substantial amounts of Malates and/or Citrates which are PolyCarboxylic anions e.g. Potassium Malate/Citrate
- Malates/Citrates are absorbed straight into the blood, via the small intestine, and also, possibly, through the walls of the stomach
- the bloodstream contains a small % of organic acid (anions) at all times .... they can act as carriers for minerals (and hence are a mineral buffer for the body, albeit a minor one).... possibly they have other functions although they can be produced in the cells
- the mineral organic anion compounds are alkalizing,in the body, and neutralise the non-metabolizeable acidic byproducts of protein breakdown (excess protein = excess acid that has to be neutralised/excreted).

Carboxlyic groups are also implicated in the energy cycle, where they are intermediatry products e.g. Pyruvate, Acetyl-CoA but presumbly, in the average person, the body can make all of the energy products it needs, from glucose etc.

SCFA's are also used in animal feedstock as an antibiotic growth promoter.

Q. Are their any health benefits in any of the other possible functional groups found in typical Humus products?

A. They can contain phenols, that are known for their anti-oxidant properties.

Q. Are there any substances in Humus products that could pose a risk to human health?

A. Possibly. They could contain some phenols, or other chemicals, that are toxic but it is not known for certain .... Formic Acid is one SCFA that can have toxic properties (for this reason it is adviseable to purchase the product from a company that can be held accountable).

Q. Is there anything in Fulvic/Humic Acid that can not be obtained by the average person provided they consume a healthy diet?

A. It is unlikely that this would be the case. Most of the surmised benefits could be achieved by good nutritional management and targetted supplementation.

Exceptions might be where supplementation of, say SCFA's like Acetic Acid, has a more immediate and targetted effect or where the 'supplements' are providing an organic anion boost where the diet is deficient in them for any reason.

Thank heavens it is all going on 'below ground' where we can't see it.

[YEA] Scott from Pen Argyl, Pa writes: "I ran across fulvic acid quite by accident and started using it as a preventative supplement for various conditions. I noticed that I had more energy, better concentration and a general sense of better health but found another interesting effect. Fulvic acid is a chelator that helps detox the body. I think it took the nicotine and other pollutants from smoking out of my body so that I no longer had the strong cravings. In fact, sometimes I found the cigarettes distasteful so I just quit. The one problem I had with quitting was the physiological reaction of my lungs still wanting that feeling of being filled by the smoke. I solved that just by inhaling and exhaling as if I was smoking without the smoke and it reduced those cravings. I've been off cigarettes for two weeks now. As Samuel Clements aka Mark Twain said, quiting smoking is easy, I've done it hundreds of times. Well so have I. I have a feeling though, this time will be my last time quitting. I just am not having the cravings I had the other hundreds of times I tried quitting and it's just been so darned easy. If this isn't detoxing, I don't know what is.

I use a concentrated form of fulic, 350 times in liquid form. I add 12 drops to to juice or tea. It seems to react to milk so don't use that. Also, as it is a chelator it's highly reactive so don't buy it in any kind of plastic container, only glass. Plastic is also now found to contain a chemical that might contribute to erectile disfunction so stay away from it as much as possible. I won't even use a plastic cup with fulvic acid because of how reactive it is.

EarthClinic won't let us post specific products but maybe they'll let these key words through so you can find it on your own if you do a search. Fulvic Acid, Optimally, Organic. If they let this through then you'll find a supplier that provides several reports on the site that tells of the many other benefits of fulvic acid and one that offers the best value I've found so far in a quality product in a glass container."

Alain from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada writes: "I checked the fulvic acid page http://www.earthclinic.com/Supplements/fulvic_acid.html

All the product names or web site addresses have been removed from the posts. I understand EC's policy of not advertising products. But humic acid powder is not easy to find like ACV or Vitamin C. It seems to be sold in agriculture as fertilizer. So I think this is a case where the removal of product/web site names is very unfortunate.

IMO I now think that this policy could be relaxed.

Robert from Independence, OR writes: "I wanted to point out the difference between so called colloidal minerals, leached brown coal and real medical grade fulvic acid called Wujinsan in China. Wujinsan means black gold medicine and has been in the Chinese medical literature since the Ming dynasty of the 14 century. It is a popular and valuable medicine in modern China. It has to pass quality control criteria and be free of toxic elements. Fulvic acid makes the cell membranes more permeable and also ionize minerals allowing the minerals into the cells. This is a very bad situation if toxic metals or chemicals from the raw materials. It must be very pure and the process is slow and involved. There is only one true Wujinsan Lab in the U.S. It involves fermentation with specific beneficial microbes as true fulvic acid is fungal derived. The product is free of any detectable metals other than necessary one like zinc. Products called "colloidal minerals " are a witches brew of what they claim is 74-84 elements. The problem is we only need maybe 26 of those and the rest are either toxic or useless. You never want to intentionally take a product that contains Aluminum, mercury, lead, cadmium, etc.in any form. leading alternative doctors buy real medical grade wujinsan from ____product made near the Oregon coast. The analysis is provided as required by state law. check out ____ or ___ for the real facts on the real and proven product made in the U.S with U.S raw materials that even the Chinese consider to be better than the Chinese humates."
