Adhesive arachnoiditis is a rare yet painful condition characterized by inflammation of the arachnoid membrane surrounding the spinal cord. Symptoms include chronic pain, numbness, tingling, muscle spasms, and weakness. Although no definitive medical cure exists, various natural remedies and lifestyle changes can help alleviate symptoms, reduce inflammation, and improve overall quality of life.

What Causes Adhesive Arachnoiditis?

Common triggers of adhesive arachnoiditis include spinal surgeries, epidural injections, infections, or spinal trauma. The inflammation causes nerve roots to clump together, resulting in chronic pain and reduced mobility.

Top Natural Remedies for Adhesive Arachnoiditis

1. Turmeric (Curcumin)

How it helps: Turmeric contains the potent anti-inflammatory compound curcumin, which can significantly reduce inflammation and nerve pain associated with adhesive arachnoiditis.

How to use: Take 500-1000 mg of curcumin supplements daily with black pepper extract for enhanced absorption. You can also incorporate turmeric into meals regularly.

2. Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)

How it helps: Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant known for reducing nerve pain (neuropathy) and inflammation, potentially relieving symptoms.

How to use: Supplement with 600-1200 mg of alpha-lipoic acid daily. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting ALA.

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

How it helps: Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and support nerve health.

How to use: Take 1-3 grams of high-quality fish oil daily. Include omega-3-rich foods like salmon, sardines, chia seeds, and walnuts.

4. Magnesium

How it helps: Magnesium helps reduce muscle spasms and nerve pain and improves overall nerve function.

How to use: Supplement with 250-400 mg of magnesium glycinate or citrate daily. Magnesium-rich foods include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate.

5. CBD Oil (Cannabidiol)

How it helps: CBD oil provides pain relief, reduces inflammation, and calms nerve-related discomfort, making it a beneficial natural treatment for adhesive arachnoiditis.

How to use: Use high-quality CBD oil daily (10-50 mg daily, based on severity). Consult a healthcare provider for personalized dosing.

6. Serrapeptase Enzyme

How it helps: Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme that breaks down scar tissue, potentially reducing adhesions and inflammation.

How to use: Supplement with 80,000-120,000 SPU daily on an empty stomach. Always follow label instructions.

7. Vitamin B Complex

How it helps: B vitamins, especially B1 (thiamine), B6, and B12, support nerve health and can alleviate neuropathic pain.

How to use: Take a high-quality B-complex supplement daily. Foods with B vitamins include whole grains, eggs, nuts, and lean meats.

Holistic and Lifestyle Approaches

Gentle Stretching and Physical Therapy

Doing gentle stretching exercises or physical therapy helps maintain flexibility, reduces muscle spasms, and improves mobility.

Acupuncture

This traditional Chinese therapy can significantly reduce chronic pain and improve nerve function by stimulating specific points on the body.

Anti-inflammatory Diet

Incorporate anti-inflammatory foods into your diet, such as leafy greens, berries, fatty fish, olive oil, and nuts, to help manage symptoms naturally.

Mindfulness and Stress Reduction

Practices like mindfulness meditation, yoga, and deep-breathing exercises reduce stress, helping manage chronic pain symptoms more effectively.

Precautions and Consultation

Before beginning any natural remedy or supplement regimen, especially with a complex condition like adhesive arachnoiditis, consult your healthcare provider to ensure safety and appropriateness for your specific situation.

Conclusion

While adhesive arachnoiditis can be challenging, combining these natural remedies and holistic approaches can significantly improve quality of life and manage chronic pain effectively. Incorporating supplements like turmeric, CBD oil, and magnesium, alongside lifestyle changes and diet improvements, offers comprehensive support in managing adhesive arachnoiditis symptoms.

Adhesive Arachnoditis Remedies

I met a friend on Substack.com who has...what do you recommend for his healing and pain?

Gary the biker has adhesive arachnoditis plus a form of cancer.

Adhesive arachnoiditis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the arachnoid membrane surrounding the spinal cord, often resulting from infections, spinal surgery, or trauma. It can cause severe pain and neurological symptoms due to the formation of scar tissue that adheres nerve roots together, leading to impaired nerve function.

Hi WatchmanForTruth,

I would try melatonin lotion (ML) applied topically to the entire spine area twice a day, if his condition was caused by trauma.

Why ML?

ML is anti inflammatory, antioxidative stress, has pain relieving effects, has antifibrotic effects for the scar tissue and helps multiple spinal issues with long term use.

I wrote about how several friends used ML to help with multiple pain issues and spinal issues as well as how they made ML at home very easily here :

Melatonin also has anticancer effects which can work synergistically with standard cancer treatments.
