If you also have a racing heart rate, as I do, well here's a simple remedy for that as well: Whenever you feel your heart racing, you simply put your hand on your neck and for some reason that will slow your heart rate within a very few minutes.

Weird, I know, but it's reduced my visits to the emergency room to nil.

Please be careful with natural remedies for a racing heart without checking with your doctor first.

Back in 2016 I had moments where my heart was pounding, or racing, when simply sitting or laying in bed about to go to sleep. Turns out I had atrial fibrillation, also known as “afib”. I had a friend take me to the emergency room, they did some sort of test, possibly an EKG, I'm not sure. I ended up getting a cardioversion which basically means the doctor shocks your heart back to normal rhythm.

For me, the afib never returned, but every person‘s experience with afib is different. Please check with your doctor.

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your concern and you have every right to feel that way. I know I don't have Afib from the many visits to the ER. Afib is a totally different thing from a racing heart. A racing heart still has a normal heart rhythm whereas Afib is an irregular heart rhythm. I should have clarified that in my original post so thanks for clearing that up.

Hi M.,

You have a carotid artery on either side of your neck and you can feel a pulse on each side. When you put a little pressure on one of these (never on both! ) that will soon slow the heart rate. Best to ask your doctor if it's safe for your own peace of mind. I told my doctor what I was doing and what it did for me and asked him why it worked and that's what he told me.

Don't forget adrenal fatigue. I had heart palpitations and tacchycardic states for several months before finally being diagnosed with adrenal fatigue by a homeopathic doc (western medicine docs don't recognize this condition). There are tons of natural remedies, just google adrenal fatigue.

I agree that in some cases adrenal fatigue may cause the problem, however, when I took adrenal to get rid of my adrenal fatigue it made my heart race over 200 bpm per minute. They had been trying to figure out what caused it to race from December 2006 to November 2012, My racing finally was fixed by an ablation, had to do with the AVNRT, (AVNRT=AV Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia), they said I had a slow path and a fast path and they killed/froze not sure which the slow path. But I did not know for sure, they thought I had SVT, untill they went in to do the ablation and saw it was AVNRT.

For heart palpitations, another concern to address would be Magnesium Deficiency. Magnesium Taurate is the Mg of choice for the heart. Pls. search : on Rapid heart beats and Magnesium. There is so much info online. I hope you find your answer.

Anxiety/Panic Attacks/ph balancing

My dh and I moved 1000 miles away to the middle of nowhere (seriously) with 2 small kids, for him to take a job working 80+hrs a week...in JANUARY! The dog died, the car died, my daughter burnt her arm on the woodstove, we were isolated etc. and of course for 3 months I tried every natural remedy to save our dog to no avail. So when I suddenly went to emerg one night with a racing heart that I couldn't slow down, the sweats, shakes and dizziness, I thought for sure I was having a heart attack...heck I am 40 after all! They gave me an adavan that I didn't take and told me to go home and relax with all the stress in my life. Although everyone kept telling me I was in emotional turmoil...for me there had to be another concrete reason, I had handled way worse in my life and heck it wasn't like I lived in a war torn country or anything...nutritionally I mean, or lack thereof.

I had been drinking black tea again to cope with the dog, the move etc. so it was the first to go with the result being less frequent attacks. So with the help of a guy in Nova Scotia I learned about PH balancing and the work of Dr. Carey Reams. I started balancing my ph each day and if it was 7ish I felt awesome, if it was acid I felt awful. Any sweetener- even honey affected me greatly on the acid side. Then I added in a green supplement from a doctor in Barrie Ontario. On his advice I also started taking a concentrated mineral supplement (the most popular one on the market he recommended) and I started with 1 drop 2x a day, then 2 drops 2x a day and so on. He said I would have loose stools when I reached enough. He said rarely some of his clients could handle 40-60 drops a day. THIS was ME! I was taking 30 drops 2x a day with no loose stools- AND I felt like a million bucks....and NO more panic attacks- ever. woohoo. Then I moved on to zeolite which got back my 5 yr flagging libido and life was incredibly awesome... of course I ended up pregnant with my 3rd, but it's all good and i'm still feeling awesome with no return of the horrifying panic attacks. Incidentlly I tried homeopathics, herbal tinctures, herbal teas, acv, baking soda etc. nothing worked but the constant paying attention of the day to day ph morning and night of my saliva and urine and taking the concentrated minerals. Believe me, for anyone going thru these you'll do just about anything to make them stop!!!

Hi,

I don't think Wendy from Barrie has responded about the "concentrated mineral supplement" she took.

However, I'm wondering if it is ConcenTrace (you can get it from health food stores, as well as Amazon). The bottle says "full-spectrum body-balanced ionic minerals and trace elements" and states you are to take 10 to 20 drops up to twice a day in water or liquid. Some people have to work up to that level due to the laxative effect it may have on them. People also use it to re-mineralize distilled or reverse-osmosis water.

This product is quite popular so perhaps it's the one she used. Hope that helps! Best of health to you and yours, Bess

I just read your post. I am very interested in what green supplement your dr advised. I am in the hospital right now with what could be a permanent tachy. Rx side effect. I was told the only way to "fix" it was more rx. I refused. I am eager to hear from you. Tricia

Blackstrap Molasses for SVT or Supraventricular Tachycardia

I've had SVT or Supraventricular Tachycardia for over 10 years now. It can be induced by stress, dehydration and who knows what else. Even a greasy meal once. I think depending on what triggers it different things will work for me. Rarely, a valsalva maneuver (which has about a 20-50% success rate, I think) will help.

Things that have I have switched between and tried (usually one about 20 minutes after the other with each unsuccessful attempt): magnesium oil sprayed on chest, powdered potassium supplement, big spoonful of blackstrap molasses. I don't try them in that order that's just a list of things that have worked for me.

You very well could be dealing with (what is basically ignored in the allopathic community) HHS (Hiatal Hernia Syndrome). All three of the triggers you've stated are tell tale signs of having a hiatal hernia. Stress, dehydration, and/or greasy foods all cause the stomach to spasm and rise toward the hiatus. Eventually enough pressure and tension develops and a portion of the fundus of the stomach (the part that leads to the esophagus) will push through the hiatus (sometimes it actually tears) and when this happens, all sorts of things can begin to go wrong. Mainly (if it's advanced enough) because your left and/or right vagus nerve along with your thoracic aorta (the main artery to your heart) now have pressure on them; and like any nerve that is pinched, it will begin to fire incorrectly. In this case, leading to a dysregulation of your parasympathetic nervous system, often causing all kinds of arrhythmias. It will also often lead to panic attacks (due to the dysregulation of the PSNS causing too much norepinephrine to be dumped into your system at once).

I dealt with the same thing for years not knowing what the root cause actually was until one day I "happened" to have a chiropractor appointment scheduled and barely slept the night before because my heart was going nuts with svt and a-fib.

He quickly identified that I probably just had a hiatal hernia at which point he was able to maneuver my stomach back down where it belongs. Within 30 seconds every symptom went away. I have never been more amazed, frustrated, and elated all at the same time in my life lol. At that point I had been dealing with arrythmias and night panic attacks for about 7 years and they were getting increasingly worse and more frequent every year.

Like you, I had tried numerous protocols and supplements with some relief but never a full resolution. I'm actually finishing up creating a micro course/mini ebook on how I learned to manage (and am slowly healing) my hiatal hernia. Doing so has completely rid me of the arrythmias and panic attacks.

Hi, this is my second posting - funny how you remember other points just when you send your posting off!! Anyhow - does anyone get problems with very rapid heart rate after a carbohydrate meal. I haved been dragged off to hospital with this many times. The only solution they could suggest if the electrical proceedure. No thanks, as my heart rate is very normal other times. Only increases when I eat a meal of carbos. and then get up to walk or something. Coffee with a nice cake is a definite NO NO for me - the two seem to tighten my chest and rob me of all energy. OK Im allgeric to wheat. But why? This only happened to me after being given masses of drugs to "cure my nu pmonia apologies for dreadful spelling) After each carbo. meal in hospital (I had no choiced) then back would come the reflux and rapid heart rate. Any comments welcomed.

Hi Sheila,

The first thing you need to determine is whether or not these high carb meals contain those two excitotoxins called monosodium glutamate (MSG) or aspartame, which are both known to cause cardiac problems. Matter of fact, good old aspartame (Nutrisweet or Equal)
is suspected of causing sudden cardiac death, according to a lot of literature, much of which is available on line.

If you are sure it is allergies, then you might want to google N.A.E.T. which uses accupressure techniques to cure allergies. I have been thinking of looking into this for my own allergy problems. I have read several good comments on EC concerning this one.

Rapid Heart Rate after eating,

I have been dealing with this for 6 years now, have had every test in the world, I think that it has something to do with my digestive system, hiatial hernia or kidneys, I don't know for sure but I have been on zebeta for almost 6 years and have had one attempbed ablation. I know that within 20 minutes of eating certain foods and they are random foods that my heart will race to over 200 beats per minute and then I call the ambulance with gives me adenosine IV to slow it back down. I have spent so much money on hospitals and doctors between me and the insurance company and still don't know what causes it.

I know that I can not eat anything with MSG, I can't eat pork, I can't eat hot dogs, I will get this bump and then the racing starts. I did two weeks ago try a remedy I got off of earth clinic when my heart started racing it was at 176 by time I got to the ice machine, but I put both my wrist in the ice and put in on my face and it started going down immediately, but I know that I will not always have ice around. They want me to do another ablation next month, still debating, but I am also tired of the heart racing. I have been on the stricktist diet in the world for the last 6 years, but, no anything good, just all healthy, It does not seem to matter, when the racing wants to come, it comes. I, after 6 years decided I wanted a rootbear float. Have not had anything carbinated for 10 years, it actually helped, so I have now decided, when I eat something that makes me feel full, even if it is a little bit, I either drink a small amount of sprite or a root bear float and it seems to help with the flutters and bumping. The doctors don't seem to understand when I tell them about the bumping before the heart racing. I don't know if this is what you get but a lot of people do.

Its either a lack of Potasium or magnesium in your diet and its probably both. Start eating bannanas, as thats an easily digestable source of potasium. And get a good multi supplement down you, just to cover all bets. If you do this in a few weeks the symtoms lesson and the stress level goes down. The Human body complies with the definition of 'Machine" (a bio Chemical one. )In that it "elevates effort".. if you dont give the machine what it needs its going to start playing up.

I agree with Gavin, it is probably a lack of potassium or magnesium in your body.

When I was getting a fast heart beat a few months ago, I would take some ACV (about 1/8 cup straight) and it would stop almost immediately. I would also take some cayenne pepper in a hot tea like drink.

Also Blackstrap unsulphured molasses is high in potassium and magnesium. You could also take epson salt baths (magnesium sulphate) or swim in the sea (high magnesium amongst all the other minerals).

I was taking high dose Vitamin C at the time so I am thinking it was depleting my minerals at the time.

Also I read recently people having anxiety attacks (fast heartbeat etc. ) stopped their attacks by having a COLD shower.

Colloidal minerals should help you as well rather than trying to pick and choose certain minerals. There may be some lacking that you are not aware of.

TED DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TREAT THIS. I have been dealing with Tachycardia since 2006, I told my doc's all along it would happen after I ate something, I eliminated lots of things from my diet, I have six years of test, my heart beats would go over 240bpms and I would have to call the ambulance to get them down. I just recently had an ablation, which stoped them from going over 200 bpms so far, however, I did come across a syndrome, called Roemheld Syndrome - Gastro-cardiac Syndrome, however I cannot find a doctor that tests for it where I live. It was discovered by Roemheld syndrome (RS), also known as Roemheld-Techlenburg-Ceconi-Syndrome or gastric-cardia, is a complex of gastrocardiac symptoms first described by Ludwig Roemheld (1871-1938). It is a syndrome where maladies in the gastrointestinal tract or abdomen trigger/cause cardiac symptoms. There is rarely a traceable cardiac source to the symptoms which may lead to a lengthy period of misdiagnosis.

If the heart rate drops too low for too long, catecholamines are released to counteract any lowering of blood pressure. Catecholamines bind to alpha receptors and beta receptors, decreasing vasodilation and increasing contractility of the heart. Sustaining this state causes heart fatigue which results in fatigue and chest pain. I found a doctor on line, but I'm not sure what country she is in. I think it is Canada-here is part of her article on this.

Gastro-cardiac Syndrome - What is it?

By: Dr. Margret Holland, B. Sc. , N.D.

Patients will often come in with a list of symptoms that may include: belching, nausea, heart burn, racing heart, irregular heart beats and/or changes in blood pressure. It is easy to see that some of these symptoms may be related to stomach function whereas others are more related to the heart.

Gastro-cardiac syndrome explains how both of these may actually be intertwined. The vagus nerve innervates both the stomach and the heart and irritation of this nerve can result in abnormal function of both of these organs at the same time.

Another possible etiology for Gastro-cardiac syndrome is through direct irritation of the heart via the diaphragm. If the stomach is not functioning properly, gas may develop, if not released; this gas may actually cause the stomach to slightly displace upwards, putting pressure on the diaphragm. This pressure then refers up onto the heart causing it to change position slightly. Any shifts in the heart's position can result in symptoms such as those mentioned above.

If you suffer from a list of complaints that include both the stomach and heart, you may wish to consider the possibility of this syndrome before beginning a regime of medications.

I have also noticed a connection between my stomach, just the act of eating or even sometimes drinking water, and tachycardia (SVT I think). What would one do if they had the gastric - cardiac syndrome mentioned by Dr. Margret Holland? When I mentioned this connection before to my doctors, they just ignored it. I am so tired of my life as it is right now, I want to get better but do not know what to do.

Get some pure magnesium powder and take 1/4 teaspoon 3 times a day with meals and 1/2 teaspoon before bed...Don't take any other kind of magnesium. If your heart starts to race any time during the day drink a glass of ice water in hard heavy gulps.It will stop the racing immediately...Also a glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt stirred in will stop the racing before you finiish the glass..

There several possibilities for your post carbohydrate symptoms of tachycardia. One is that you have a dip in your blood sugar one to three hours after the high carb meal which causes adrenalin to stimulate your heart and make it beat faster and stronger, and you feel tired. Thyrotoxicosis can also cause tachycardia.

A rare possibility which is actually quite serious is a rare disease called hypokalemic periodic paralysis which causes the potassium in the blood to decrease to dangerously low levels and cause severe fatigue and sometimes partial paralysis or extreme weakness. It is easy to diagnose. Treatment includes avoiding high carb meals.

It sounds like an allergy symptom. If your heart rate increases by 10 points after eating certain foods, you're reacting to them in an allergic way. People can be allergic to sugar and get symptoms. Just stay away from those foods because allergy is forever. I also get a sudden heart rate increase, and I know there is something in that food that I am allergic to. Especially if you get headaches or migraines, digestive problems, sinus congestion, asthma, etc after eating these foods. Google allergy pulse test.

Would anyone be able to tell me what causes high pulse rate? Most of the time my pulse is between 45 and 50. Today it is 80 and I just feel drained of energy. Is there some information on EC to explain this? Thanks to anyone who helps.

Shadel... Re...your high pulse rate... Consider first taking magnesium. 500 milligrams of magnesium citrate. The lack often is the cause of arrhythmia styled problems.

High Pulse rate.

I took a drug for two years (beta blocker) for high blood pressure.. All it did was make me sick and give me palpitations and rapid heart beat.. I then weaned off .. It took me a year and It was a nightmare.. Anyway; I needed to find things for when my heart rate went up so I started using Hawthorn and Motherwort.. works really well..

I also am doing Magnesium but I had been doing that already.... You can also try Black strap molasses.. what works really well too if heart rate goes bonkers is some sea salt in water.. Palpitations go right down... I experiment a lot on myself lol

Hi Bee, L-Arginine will slow your pulse down...It makes the endothelial cells, which line all you blood vessels open up and produce nitric oxide which relaxes your veins...The other is L-Citrulline..Start the L-Arginine as directed on the bottle and increase if you have to...Both are very safe supplements...L-Citrulline does the same thing...Your choice...They're not expensive and you can buy them at a health food store or Swanson's.com I find has the best prices..

But I also take taurine and L carnitine.. is this too much. I do have high blood pressure and I was experimenting but now do not know if I should cut out something.. I was going by Dr. Stephen Sinatra and metabolic cardiology. He says to use Magnesium, CoQ10, L carnitine and D Ribose. I do not do the Ribose.. basically all for prevention..

Bee, I'd go with 500 mgs L-arginine 2x a day...Once in the morning and once before bed...Also add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar 2x a day...Take it with honey if you don't like the taste...The other supplements are your choice...If you're so inclined you can add one cayenne capsule a day as it will open your capillaries and help your heart...Cayenne will also stop a heart attack in less then one minute with a teaspoon in a glass of warm water at the onset of a heart attack...Everyone should have cayenne in their house...EMT's should carry it as well.

I love cayenne but when I was using it was raising my blood pressure but I do keep some by my bedside just in case as I have read good things about it.. Not sure I can use it on a regular basis as I said it raises my blood pressure.. so any ideas?? Thank You

Cayenne is not for everyone. I see it recommended here over and over again (often, in copious amounts! ) and anyone who suggests its use should include the caveat that it should initially be taken in VERY small amounts--i.e. sprinkle some on food.

I know someone who took a Cayenne capsule and had a stroke! I read the same written by someone here on EC of a friend who had made tea using a half teaspoon of Cayenne.

For me, Cayenne raises my blood pressure, so I am only able to sprinkle a very small amount on my food each day.

Many tend to think that because it is a spice (vs. a drug) that it can't possibly harm you. It absolutely can harm you and anyone who suggests its use should do so responsibly, making certain to suggest starting with very small amounts, slowly working up to the higher amounts if they find they tolerate the small amounts well.

Hi Bee, Stay off high test sugar...Walk daily about 20 minutes and breath deep and slowly while you're walking...You can also try niacinamide at 200 mgs/day or more. You have to experiment with what works for you...And drink lots of good water...Magnesium will also help if you are not already taking it...Take at least 400 mgs/day...

Mr. Rhee. I try very hard to stay away from sugar and yes I love to walk .. I also do the magnesium but a bit more than you suggested..

The Niacin I tried but got the flush and didn't like that.. I do have a B12 complex with 100 mgs. of Niacin in it. Not sure that is enough..

Oh; and I do find breathing exercises very helpful. I found some Chi gong that I did and loved it.. Thank you very much

Mr.Rhee.. sorry to bother you again but do you think its also a good idea to take Nattokinase or serrapeptase in addition to the other things.

Be sure to take Lysine if you're taking Arginine. Arginine does indeed allow Nitric Oxide into blood vessels, but it also allows viruses in your system to "express" themselves. Lysine helps to prevent that from happening (which is why people with Herpes take Lysine & zinc).

Thank you all for the very interesting ideas here, rooted in experience. One thing -- do the same treatments apply for Ventricular Tachycardia, as they do for Atrial?

Unless you have POTS...which can show as a high heart rate especially from standing after sitting or when your blood pressure drops. The heart has to work hard to raise BP. Something to look into.

My mother had an irregular and rapid heart beat. Sometimes at night she would call me to put a "pinch" of Cayenne Pepper from the spice cabinet, in hot milk to calm her heart. I have insomnia and Lupus, and have started using a pinch of Cayenne in hot milk.(powder) Please tell me how much could be used? Also, if I get the Cayenne from a health store in liquid form, how much would be safe for use every night. Thank you.

For the past year, I have been suffering from severe headaches, my heart would beat extremely fast just from standing up, and dizziness. I knew that it was serious when my head was hurting so bad one day that I went to lie down and woke up almost 15 hours later. I found this website while looking for a cure for gout for someone else. Have you ever heard of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome? Dizziness and increased heart rate upon standing is a major symptom especially chronic headaches and many more. I'd look into it :)

Tachycardia: One 400 mg capsule of Coleus Forskohlii lowers my pulse rate by at least 15 beats per minute. I take one just on some mornings when my heart rate feels uncomfortably high. For example this morning my pulse was 95 bpm, An hour after I took the capsule it was 80.

I am overweight & was not only concerned but embarrassed that my heart rate would skyrocket at the slightest exertion (like going up half a flight of stairs, bending over to pick up laundry, or even just standing up! ). It would also beat so hard that when I was in bed, I could see my blanket or the book I was reading shaking. I tried doing cardio for at least 30-45 minutes at a time, because I thought I must be terribly out of shape. I could only walk at a moderate pace, or my heartrate would go out of the safe range.

I have taken DE a few times over the years, but had not been taking it for awhile. I started taking it again because my hair was falling out. I took it at night, because it also seems to help me sleep. On the morning after my second dose, I noticed that my heart rate was slower!!!

In less than 2 weeks, it went from being over 100 resting & in the 120s while standing to being in the 80s! After a couple more months of doing this (and not being able to increase exercise due to a car accident), my resting heart rate is now about 70. And I have to run twice as fast on my elliptical to get my heart rate into the target zone!

Just goes to show that this condition was NOT caused by my weight or being out of shape, but perhaps by a mineral deficiency. I've heard that DE increases bioavailability of other minerals, such as calcium, as well as being beneficial itself because of the silica content.

I also had high blood pressure at the time, but want to point out that the DE did not help with it. They seem to be 2 entirely different issues. I could have a fast heart rate and normal blood pressure, or vice versa. I did start taking hawthorn berry, full spectrum olive leaf, potassium, Vitamin C, and hibiscus tea, and my blood pressure is wonderful--again without losing weight or getting in better shape (although I'm working on those 2 things, also! ). I'll try to post that in the hypertension section.

I really hope this info helps someone. I was so frightened and frustrated by this condition, and I'm so relieved that it has improved!

Oh, I almost forgot; every night, I mix 1-2tbsp into about 8oz water, and drink it down quickly. You may want to start out with a smaller dose & work your way up, as it can have a cleansing affect. Good luck!

Hi, I am having similar problems, I notice after I exercise, my pulse is very high but my bp is almost at hypotensive levels?

Wonder if DE might work for me? Can I buy DE at my local health food store? I love to exercise and have done it for twenty years!!! I don't want to give it up!!!!

I have a case of DE as my mother used to use it for bedbug prevention around the apt!

I will try it tonight and order motherwort. The Dr. took me off of hawthorn which I thought was strange as I really don't think it caused the racing heart. My blood pressure is normal since going on the Eat to Live diet by Dr. Fuhrman which is vegetarian.

I know for a fact that when I am in good shape and exercising on a regular bases I hardly have any SVT attacks. I still will get them once in a while. When I am not exercising regularly I have the attacks all the time and the palpitations are more frequent as well. I know this because I am one of those people that will be in great shape for half the year, then slack for a couple months at a time for the rest. When I am slacking I have SVT pretty often. We all know our bodies and this works best for me. The cardiologist does not believe there is a connection and he is the professional. But I have had SVT for going on 20 years and my heart lets me know when to get back into shape.
