Any image search site is good. I use www.bing.com If you just hold your mouse cursor over any image, it'll magnify and show details, like the site that product is available on. Some are several hundred dollars, but just look around.

No need to spend hundreds of $$ for a pH meter unless you want to. I use the "pH Checker" meter made by Hanna Instruments. It's fast, accurate and easy. You can find it many places on the web including Ebay, it's ~$30.USD

Linda

Can someone tell me how to do a ph test? I'm not sure where to find a kit perhaps? Also, what is the appropriate ph for saliva or urine? God bless all the smart people who take their health in their own hands.Thank you for a wonderful site, I never take allopathic medicine, but can spend alot of money in my cooky natural experiments. It's nice to know what really works for other people, makes my experiments much more affordable!

Hi Whitecat007, It sounds to me like your body is too acidic and toxic. What type of diet do you have? I would suggest to begin there. Clean that up by eliminating processed foods, sugar, white flour products, dairy and gluten. Eat what I call "close to the earth". Make sure you eat mostly fresh vegetables and protein and if you can make fresh green juices. I assure you, the pain will go away through this process. Assist the body also with detoxing which there are plenty of ideas here on EC you can check out.

The baking soda/ maple syrup isn't going to do a thing if you're really toxic. The doctors aren't going to say a thing about this either- they don't know! So many of our problems are due to diets and our toxic world. They only make people more toxic with prescription meds.

Hope this information helps you, Lisa

Hydrogen Peroxide, Borax

I've been using peroxide since 2006 (one year before I found Earth Clinic). Up until this past January, I would take breaks from using 1 1/2 teaspoons with 1/4 teaspoon of borax in 1 1/3 litres of water. I'm using it to increase energy, and hopefully reduce long term mycoplasma. Since January, I've increased to almost 1 tablespoon of peroxide, and a rounded 1/2 teaspoon of borax. Although if I'm fatigued which is quite often, I don't feel much increased energy, but I've noticed my PH is much more consistent, between 7 and 7. 35. I'm just getting concerned if this dose is safe long term. (By the way, since Canada has restricted access to food grade peroxide March, 2009, the price for one gallon has increased from $8. 00 - bulk buy, to $75. 00! ! And that's if you can find a gallon. It's mostly available after registering with the government and buying a large drum. I am looking for Miracle Mineral Supplement (MMS) which I've recently discovered has been re-labelled as Water Purification Drops (WPD) here in Canada, so hopefully I'll be able to switch to this soon.

MMS can easily be made at home with a little care.

2-3 drops of NaClO2 (sodium chlorite) and then 2-3 drops of HCl (hydrochloric acid) are placed in a test tube - not the other way around! . Thereafter, an amber-colored reaction occurs whose vapors are highly toxic. I prevent the vapors from escaping with my thumb on the test tube. Afterwards the test tube has to be filled up with pure water about 5 times in order to rinse it thoroughly. The water is filled up to 1 liter to 1.5 liters until it can be drunk with a little effort.
The effect was increased resistance to viruses. I did this 3 times with a 1 day break in between.

hi, I have been recommended lemon shot ie. juice of 2 lemons+equal amount of water for flushing off excessive acidity from the body and as a good neutraliser as lemon turns alkaline post digestion. After visiting your website I have found that you recommend ACV much more than Lemon. Kindly reply as which one is better option. what are the precautions to be taken when we use both of them. Thank you. regards. Ujwala

Sharon, I am sorry to see no reply posts for you yet, I have never had your misfortune, but realize that you must be in physical and mental agony with the itching for weeks, here is what I suggest:

Baking soda, Epsom salt and a good sea salt like Himalayan mixed in equal quantities in water, till all is dissolved…put this in an atomizer bottle and spray your body down. If this remedy is causing you more discomfort, shower it off.

Salt is a strong natural antihistamine. The magnesium in the Epsom will calm the skin, it gets absorbed through the skin and can calm the nervous system and sooth your mind and soul??, the sulfur will improve the circulation and is always great on eczema problem, so why not yours, the bicarb of soda will counter the inflammation and the itch and burn…or try soaking(15-20min) in a bath with at least a cup of each of these agents. I have found Lavender and Peppermint essential oil great for itching skin…so add a few drops of these to the bath...

Rub on some coconut oil afterwards..

Search for the system alkalinizing remedies of our two heroes on Earth clinic, Bill and Ted…

I hope you find relief soon!

Lemons and Limes

Posted by Rick (Woburn, Ma) on 07/11/2011

I'm still confused. I have read the list of foods that are the most alkalizing and acidifying to the body. Both lemons and limes are listed as some of the most alkalizing fruits. Apparently there is some internal process that treats these citric acids as alkalizers. If this is true, is ascorbic acid, without the addition of any baking soda, an alkalizing supplement or an acidifying supplement?

Well, after recently recommending that someone should use pH test strips, I thought to check my own pH this morning. I was excited to see that it was about 6.5, which I believe was a great number for the morning, especially when I had had coffee. Then I realized that perhaps the pH was good because I had been drinking an alkalizing drink yesterday, and have been for days, since I discovered a new recipe. I thought I ought to share my recipe. This is really helping me to stay hydrated in the heat because it is so delicious that I drink a lot of it!

Lime Alkalizing Drink

  • About 8 fresh basil leaves
  • 1/4-1/2 cup of lime juice (I have bottles of organic lime juice that I am using for this. I don't measure, this is a range I think I am using.)
  • 1/2 gallon of water
  • 15 drops of Stevia
  • Put basil leaves in the bottom of a glass jar. Pour lime juice over leaves. Use the end of a wooden spoon to bruise the basil leaves in the juice. Add water. Add Stevia. Refrigerate. Drink as desired.

Fresh basil is my second favorite thing about summer. (Fresh tomatoes are my first.)

Basil is easy to grow and can be easily grown in a container on a porch or maybe even in a sunny window.

Enjoy!

I have GERD and have had to learn to keep my system more alkaline. I drink 2 t. ACV with 1 t. Honey three times a day (30 Minutes before meals). I also take two mineral capsules each day and 2 potassium capsules per day. My ph stays 6.5 to 7.0 all the time (both saliva and urine). My question is, why don't we hear more about minerals for balancing ph? They are wonderful for your body as we get older. Many of us don't need to put sodium in our bodies because of high blood pressure and other issues. Also we don't need to put too much calcium. Minerals are wonderful. The really good ones are in capsules, not hard compressed pills. M______J______ makes wonderful minerals and you can get them at most health food stores. I'd love to have your input on the wonderful world of minerals. The B____gg folks certainly recommend them to go along with the ACV.

Thanks,
Carolyn

Orp Readings

Posted by Miket (Cary, North Carolina, United States) on 08/17/2011

I just bought a pH/ORP combo meter. The ORP piece of the combo meter is factory calibarated. In taking a few urine readings, most of those readings (8 in total) were positive which ranged from 2 to 200 with only 2 readings that were negative (-15 and -19). This didn't make too much sense as for the most part I am feeling well with the exception of some brain fog issues. I started to panic a bit thinking I was a walking cancer time bomb waiting to explode... To further research, I called the vendor and asked them about negative ORP readings and their response was that the platinum probe needs to be oxidized by dipping and storing the meter in distilled vinegar solution for about 3 days initially. However, I was just reading one of Ted from Bangkok's responses to Hasan in the "ph_questions" section where he mentioned that we want to ensure that the ORP meter is cleaned and stored in a KCL solution to "prevent" oxidation. Now, I am very confused.... Has anyone run into an issue like this? What is everyone doing to ensure their ORP meters are indeed providing accurate readings (positive or negative)?

I also have a hard time keeping the ORP meter reading properly. What I have done was to use pure distilled water that sat a day to two and calibrate the meter for 265. I use the ORP meter as a reference point only from where I am at. So if I started at 135 and 150 which I did in the beginning of drinking my homemade mineral water, my urine PH climbed as well as the ORP even if it wasn't that accurate. It is quite relative. In the beginning, first three weeks, my average urine PH was 5.8, now 16 weeks later I am average 7.3 for the last 8 days and climbing. The ORP is -194. Even though it is not accurate, it is still and indicator. I calibrate my ORP meter using distilled water every 3 weeks. Hope that helps, cause I had the same thought.

I am really confused on how to get an accurate ORP reading on urine. What can be done to calibrate the ORP and make it as accurate as possible in the range of -200 to +50?

I get a positive 15 reading on my urine and the sites that explain this say it is quite bad. Then again, the meter appears to be horribly inaccurate in this range so does the reading mean anything at all?

Is there any specific brand of ORP meter that is particularly accurate for urine measurements?

Orp Readings
Posted by Rhhince (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) on 07/29/2011

I did some urinary PH testings of my parents and sister and myself. The readings varied (PH 5.1, ORP -2) (PH 6.3, ORP -70) (PH 7.0, ORP -89) (PH 7.3, ORP -75). The objective I understand, is to be able to raise the negative ORP levels -150 and up on the negative scale. For an individual that could mean raising their PH level to 7.5 to achieve that, the other 7.0 might do the trick, but the objective is the higher negative ORP readings and not so much PH. I read on other websites that PH levels between 6.5 and 8.0 are ok neutral. This may give a range for each individual to work with to obtain higher negative ORP readings. Is this a good way to start? When I started this venture 2 months ago, my 3 week PH reading average was 5.8, ORP 50, the next 3 weeks was PH 6.4, ORP -50, this current 3 week stretch in progress is sitting at PH 6.9, ORP -75. It may take another month with a PH of 7.5 to possibly achieve -150 ORP. The relationship of PH and ORP appears proportional to each individual.

Parasites, Mold, Candida

Question for Ted about parasites, mold, and candida

I have some questions about the body's ph. If you keep the urine ph between 6.5 and 7.0, can parasites, candida, and mold live in that? Or do we need to do something else for those things. I have GERD and am keeping my body more alkaline by drinking the ACV and baking soda, and minerals. Will that take care of the hpylorie, candida, mold, and parasites if I have those also?

Thanks,
Carolyn

Something to Think About, Regarding pH -

pH is all about water. Your pH is the pH of the water in your body.

Regardless of whether "your" pH is too acidic or too alkaline, the *reason* it's "too" something is because of "too much" of what's IN it. It's CONCENTRATED and it's concentrated because you're DEHYDRATED. Which, most people are, but the point is that the BEST buffer and the way the body FIXES itself is with WATER. Plain old water. Not tea, not juice - WATER. Which is what creates the profound time difference between starving to death and dying of dehydration. The body needs a constant, steady supply of plain WATER. There's no way around that.

Regardless of which system is handling which problem. it's handling it with WATER.

Too acidic, too alkaline, it doesn't matter. It's ALL just dirty water. In a properly hydrated system, it's created by normal "housecleaning" but the body knows when it's housecleaning and "dumping" dirty water and refilling with clean water is all part of the process so it's temporary. UNLESS you're DEHYDRATED. In which case, it's chronic and ALL of the housekeeping your body is trying to perform is an attempt to clean things up and keep you alive is being done with DIRTY WATER. It has no CHOICE when you're dehydrated. It MUST use dirty water 24/7, when you're dehydrated. It can stretch things out by rationing and even by sacrificing less vital organs by taking them off the housekeeping schedule - but not forever. Systems will be breaking down the whole time.

THAT'S emergency mode and most people are operating from that state of dehydration and dirty water. Water you wouldn't even want to TOUCH, let alone wash in or drink. Filthy, dirty water.

SOO, set the timer on your phone to go off every 2 hours during waking hours and drink 10 good gulps of water when it goes off. 10 gulps. That's it. Easy peasy. That's about 8 ounces. Every two hours for 16 hours a day. That's 8 cups of water. Even if you THINK you drink plenty of water, which, for some reason, people convince themselves they do when they don't - do it for a week. And that's PLAIN water. No baking soda, no mineral powders no herbs - just plain water.

Trying to heal or feed an organ or subsystem that the body is deliberately sacrificing to keep you alive is pointless and using chemicals in an attempt to force it to abandon those efforts and do what the puny brain wants it to do is dangerous.

Your body knows what to do but it needs water to do it and clean PLAIN water to do it correctly and effectively. Every bodily function requires water. CLEAN water. NOT water full of the stuff you're trying to use to fix the effects of not drinking enough water.

Once you start a regular regiment of drinking it, you'll start recognizing the body's signals that it needs more. Signals that are probably mistaken for hunger or other cravings.

So drinking when one is thirsty is not enough?

I am not sure if anybody drank water every 2 hours ever anywhere in the world... People drink water/fluids when they are thirsty 99% of the time. Just observe animals, they will go drink water when they are thirsty...

What exactly do you mean by 'plain clean water'? Distilled water, RO water, spring water, tap water?

Can drinking too much water cause sodium and electrolyte deficiency?

8 cups per day for all body weights? A 50kg woman should drink the same 8 cups per day as a 100kg man?

What about fresh vegetable juices, raw fruit, raw veggies, raw milk? These contain 80-90% clean water...

I know people who dry fasted for 20 days, I dry fasted personally for 60 hours. I know women who dry fast for 13 days every 2 months. I know natural therapist who heals by reducing water intake to 600- 900ml total fluid per day...while other advocate drinking 1- 2 gallons of water per day.

Historically people drank when thirsty and most of the time they drank VERY weak beer and wine.

Something does not add up.

Hi,

This method of drinking water seems to make sense.

take your weight # and divide in half.

The number you get is the amount you should drink daily

ex 200 lbs. half is 100

therefore 100 ounces is what you should drink daily.

take care

The setting of the timer and the amount of water is two-fold - it will highlight the fact that one isn't drinking enough plain water, that sipping isn't drinkiing and SECOND - if you're not feeling good, you're going to feel a whole lot better. It can take 2 or more years to properly hydrate but, iin the process of hydrating, a lot of things are going to happen. Healthy things.

As for the amount, it's probably not nearly enough because the body expends so much water cleaning up after all the other crap we eat and drink. And that's on TOP of the water needed to do the job it's supposed to do in a healthy body.

Hi Cindy,

I respectfully disagree. Historically people drank water or other fluids when they were thirsty, NOT every 2 hours a specific amount.

If the diet contains lots of FRESH RAW vegetables, fruit, raw milk, raw eggs, raw meat, then the water intake will be low.

If one eats mostly cooked, dehydrated food, then, water intake should be high.

IF you feed your cats and or dogs with raw never frozen meat/organs/raw milk, then, they will not drink water at all. If you feed them 'normal' dry cat/dog 'food' then they will drink A LOT of water.

What type of water do you drink personally? Reverse osmosis, distilled, spring, well?

What did you mean by saying not to sip water?

pH Health

Posted by Robert Henry (Ten Mile, Tn Usa) on 10/26/2009

I just re-read most of the sites articles on alkalinizing your body. It appears that many people do not have a feel for the value of the term, pH. To show that my chemical engineering degree from 50 years ago was not in vain.....pH is the negative logarithm of the concentration of the Hydrogen ions. A pH of 7 is neutral, below is acid and above is alkaline. However, it is not linear ...... a pH of 6 is 10 times more acidic than 7 and a pH of 5 is 20 times more acidic than 7. So you can see why you should be alarmed if your pH is in the 5's. You are not just a little acidic....... you a whole lot, and need to get on Ted's alkalizing program. I only know what I read as far as where your pH should be, but I hope this gives folks a feel for what the numbers really mean. One poster said that a pH of 6.4 is very acid. No it's not....... it is slightly acid. This in intended to give non technical people a better feel for what the pH numbers really mean.

We do not use a pH meter. We use individual pH strips and they are pretty accurate. The roll pH paper is almost worthless. It is not very accurate and you are doing Kentucky windage to rely on this measurement. I agree with most on this site that getting your body alkaline is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health.

Yet again a bit of scientific information has led to so called scare intensity in populations.. I am a nutritionist and a biochemist dealing specifically in conductivity and acid/base balance.. I do agree that certain foods exhibit either a positive or negative balance on the body, esp. with regards to pH..what i have question marks about is the fact that the pH of our stomach and parts of our small intestines are acidic, and therefore need to be acidic in order to break down and absorb nutrients effectively..Also i would not recommend whatsoever self administration of compounds in order to maintain pH levels within a so-called "desirable" range, does any of your readers know of the deleterious effects of these compounds on the cells lining the throat, alimentary cannal, stomach etc..The pH of your stomach is about 2, so any of these compound's pH will be effected from the stomach on..The reason why the stomachs pH is 2 is in order to break down foods, making then suitable for absorption in the small intestine.

Your position is that of the conventional medicine. However, you seem not to be aware that the pH of stomach varies. The stomach pH is not always 2 all the time. It varies between 2 - 6. This has been known for hundreds of years. When drinking water, pH does not get reduced in the stomach. The liquid goes quite quickly through the stomach. The stomach will produce a pH at two when a person is hungry. Most foods such as bread has a component of baking soda. The intestines creates bicarbonates to reduced the acidity. In many cases intestines get irritated whenever the body cannot produce the needed bicarbonates, creating the condition of bicarbonate deficiency, thus causing the irritation. So using baking soda does not create intestinal irritations as claimed by the person below. I was a student of biochemistry and my professor was able to prove that a large majority of the U.S. population has a bicarbonate deficiency which causes the leaky gut sydrome. Apparently, the stomach was unable to neutralize the acid created by the stomach acids because the body's imperfect chemical factory to produce enough bicarbonate to reduce such alimentary irritations.

It was also proven in laboratory conditions that before a virus or a cold conditions, the body's stores of bicarbonates get severely depleted, and there is a mathematical relation between bicarbonate deficiency and susceptibility to colds. The reason, as explained by biochemistry professor so clearly: the body's could not maintain the buffer so adequately making one's body very susceptible to infection.
