Health Benefits of Apigenin: Natural Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory

Apigenin is a powerful flavonoid found in a variety of plants, including parsley, chamomile, and celery. It has garnered attention for its potential health benefits due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. Incorporating apigenin-rich foods into your diet can contribute to overall wellness and prevention of chronic diseases.

What is Apigenin?

Apigenin is a natural compound that belongs to the class of flavonoids. These plant-derived compounds are known for their antioxidant properties, which help neutralize free radicals in the body. Apigenin has been extensively studied for its therapeutic effects, offering numerous health benefits.

Health Benefits of Apigenin

  • Antioxidant Properties: Apigenin helps reduce oxidative stress, which is linked to aging and the development of chronic conditions such as heart disease and cancer.
  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: Apigenin can lower inflammation in the body, which is a root cause of many health issues, including arthritis, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases.
  • Anti-cancer Potential: Studies suggest that apigenin can inhibit the growth of certain cancer cells, making it a promising compound in cancer prevention and treatment.
  • Supports Brain Health: Apigenin has been found to promote neurogenesis (the growth of new neurons), which may improve cognitive function and help protect against neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Cardiovascular Benefits: By reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, apigenin may help lower the risk of heart disease and improve overall heart health.
  • Helps with Anxiety and Sleep: Apigenin has a calming effect, which can reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.

Apigenin Dosage Recommendations

There is no universal standard for apigenin supplementation, but typical doses range from 50 mg to 500 mg per day, depending on individual needs and health goals. For general health benefits like antioxidant support and inflammation reduction, a daily dose of around 200 mg is often recommended.

It's important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting apigenin supplements, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications.

Potential Side Effects of Apigenin Supplements

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: In some cases, high doses of apigenin may cause digestive discomfort, including nausea, bloating, or diarrhea.
  • Drug Interactions: Apigenin may interact with certain medications, particularly those metabolized by the liver. If you are on prescription medication, consult your doctor before starting apigenin supplements.
  • Allergic Reactions: While rare, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, such as rash or swelling, when taking apigenin supplements.

Is Apigenin from Food Enough?

Apigenin from dietary sources provides valuable benefits, but it can be difficult to consume enough through food alone to experience therapeutic effects. For example, while parsley and celery are rich in apigenin, you would need to consume large amounts regularly to match the concentrations found in supplements.

For individuals seeking targeted health benefits like cancer prevention, neuroprotection, or significant anti-inflammatory effects, apigenin supplements offer a more convenient and potent option.

Conclusion

Apigenin supplements provide a concentrated source of this powerful flavonoid, offering numerous health benefits, from reducing inflammation to supporting brain health. While apigenin can be obtained through a healthy diet, supplementation may offer a more effective way to achieve therapeutic doses. Always consult with a healthcare provider to determine the right dosage and ensure it’s safe for your individual health needs.

Recently I have been testing Apigenin, which is derived from Chamomile and many fruits and vegetables, as a sleep aid. I have always wanted to test Apigenin, but just simply never got around to it until now, but I'm glad I finally did! I also gave some to a friend to test at the same time. So far so good! I don't notice a different feeling from the apigenin, but it is definitely helping me to sleep and my friend is reporting the same effect of improved sleep and shorter time to fall asleep. I consider the effect to be as good or better than other supplements I have tested for sleep such as Valerian Extract, GABA, Melatonin, Lemon Balm, Zinc, Magnesium, Hops, Lavender Essential Oil, L-Theanine etc. I plan to continue the test a bit longer and my friend plans to continue using it indefinitely because it is working well for them. The following link discusses the sleep promoting effect of apigenin :

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10929570/

Here is a relevant quote from the link :

' Cumulatively, a large body of evidence positions apigenin as a unique molecule capable of influencing both aging and sleep. '

A word of caution regarding using Apigenin with blood thinners. Apigenin has shown to synergize with aspirin to help prevent blood clotting. So if you are using any type of blood thinner or anticlotting agent, check with your doctor to make sure it will be safe for you.

Generally, the recommended dosage is 50 mg or 100 mg about an hour before bedtime. I tried both doses and found, for me, 100 mg to be more potent than 50 mg, but 50 mg worked fine and my friend said that 50 mg worked well so they did not even consider the 100 mg dose.

Apigenin has many other health benefits that include antiaging potential, but I just wanted to highlight Apigenin as a sleep aid to add to EC's armamentarium to fight insomnia. It doesn't work for everyone, but for me it was definitely worth testing for sleep and I found it to work quite well and would be one of my first choices for a sleep aid or to recommend to others.

To get a better idea of what others think of Apigenin for sleep, take a look at some of these reviews on Amazon for Apigenin :

https://www.amazon.com/Swanson-Apigenin-Prostate-Supplements-Capsules/product-reviews/B001TEIJIQ/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_btm?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews

Here is one quote from the reviews :

' Not a super well known supplement but this stuff works very well. It supposedly helps quiet down your frontal cortex allowing you to sleep without those frantic ongoing thoughts. I gave this to my girlfriend who didn't really have the information to get a placebo effect from this and she loved it. If you are taking a break from certain legalized substances this stuff helps immensely when your mind is running wild. '

If you decide to test Apigenin, please come back and let us know how it worked for you.

A friend wrote me today with the following message because she decided to test Apigenin as a sleep aid after reading about my results from testing it.

Here is what she said :

' OMG! It works!!! '

' I have tried EVERYTHING to sleep but nothing, not even THN/THC helps. Apigenin is amazing! Thank you for posting about this, You've saved my life! It worked from the 1st night. THANK YOU! '

It is still working well for me also and I have found a 100 mg dose to be most effective for me for sleep, but others have reported 50 mg to work well for them. Based on the reviews on Amazon, it does not work for everyone for sleep, but it seems to work for most who try it.

Art, I just ordered some (50mg) and will be testing it. One question, is it the only thing you took or did you include the other things you mentioned? I would love to just have to take the apigenin only, instead of the many things I take for sleep. Thanks for this information!

Hi Hollyhock,

I have taken high dose melatonin for many years as part of my daily regimen so I am taking both melatonin lotion and oral melatonin, however, if I skip the melatonin lotion and the oral melatonin dose, I still find the Apigenin to be an effective sleep aid for me, by itself. Read some of the Amazon reviews to get more points of view, as the majority are positive for sleep and similar to my own experience.

Please come back and let us know how it works for you after you test it!
