I had been menstruating for 7 weeks straight (very heavy) and went to my family doctor. She wanted to put me on birth control. I am 37 and I smoke so I didn't think that was a good choice. I decided to see me chiropractor who put me on the iodoral iodine and my menstrual period stopped in 3 days and has been regular for over 7 months. I also feel better and have more energy. I can tell if I haven't taken them. I start to feel "blah".

Low Immunity Issues

Posted by Kimberly (Cut Bank, MT) on 02/19/2009

I have a difficult question, because I've never heard of anyone with this problem. Every month when I have a period, I either get downright sick with whatever is going around at the time (usually resperitory) or I at least get a headache and sore throat. I never feel good at that time of the month. The sore throat thing doesn't seem at all connected to having a period, but it happens every month and I've begun to associate a period with a sore throat and headache. On a side note, I am trying natural progesterone creams to try to get my periods to space out because the longest I can go between them (with cream) is 25 days. Without cream it's always 21 days. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi, Kimberly, I know exactly what you are talking about. If I am tired and my immune system is run down from too much stress, I get sick right when my period starts. I think it's more common than you think in women! I recently started to be more proactive and now take vitamin c and vitamin d3 a day or two before it begins and this has helped a lot.

Hi Kimberly, I suffer from the same issue, Each month without fail I get a sore throat about a day before my menses start. I've started taking taking vitamin C each day and it has helped me greatly.

I just wanted to share my experience from a heavy bleeding episode that I had jus few weeks ago... I am 43 years old and had a miscareage and I was bleeding heavily..but since my life stile does not matches hospitals or medication I decided not to take anything and let my body recovery naturally...theblleding would not stop with anything and some days passed by and my husband and I started to worry...then we just remembered that Maca is a great suplement charged with minerals among of those big dosis of iron besides being a hormonal regulator and a smart suplement that stimulates whatever function or substance your body needs to recover in an specific circumstance...so I took two big glasses of a smothie ...each one of them contained 1 Tbsp of Maca and my bleeding was gone in a matter of hours.

I began having heavy bleeding a few years ago. My blood level was in the 19 range... 50, I think, is normal. I'd bleed so heavy I would have to change both tampon and pad every 20 min for 3 days... ugh And the cramps...

I began taking a natural herb called Maca. I now have a "normal" one day heavy flow. Changing every 2-3 hours. :) Maca is a God send.

Moon Cycle

Posted by Carly (Seattle, Wa Usa) on 03/13/2011

Hi -
I was reading that this month is something called a "SuperMoon" on March 19th. The moon will be closer to the earth then than it has been in the last 18 years. Going on the things I have read in the past on how the moon effects a womans monthly cycle....I am wondering how many of you are having issues this month that you normally don't? I always cycle at 28 days...ALWAYS. Except this month. One week late. No, not pregnant. Just wondering if anyone else has had any unusual stuff going on...
Thanks for any input!

Thanks for the feedback Robin - I am normally spot on (no pun intended) every 28 days too - that is why I was wondering it there were others experiencing off things this month. I appreciate your sharing!

M- If it is purely hormones that control the menstrual cycle, than how come over 200,000 results come up when I type "Menstrual cycle and the moon" on a certain search engine?

I for one, find this "SuperMoon" stuff absolutely fascinating!

Here is an excerpt from "menstruation.com.au":

Human beings are affected by the moon. Women especially are affected by the moon and their menstrual cycle is intimately linked to this celestial body.

The moon:

  • regulates your menstrual cycle,

  • can trigger ovulation and fertile times,

  • affects your emotions and

  • affects the way people behave and view the world.

  • Women are connected to the moon by our blood, our hormones and our souls.

The first step in claiming the gifts of our menstrual cycle is to become re-acqainted with Mother Moon. Putting aside all the scientific phenomena of the way the Moon affects the earths tides, weather, animals, fluids and moods, symbolically the Moon has a lot to teach us.

In myth the Moon is a primary female archetype travelling the great round of Birth, Maturation, Death and Rebirth each month. This is a primal fundamental cycle of the universe of which every single living thing participates.

HI U CARLY,
First I want to say that listening to you and your menstrual cycle and the phase of the moon is not offensive to me. I find it very educational.

I am sorry if I offended folks by saying we in deep stuff due to the goins on in Japan. Of course you Left Coast folks will know sooner than us in the fly over country. Have a nice day.====RH===

My periods are normally 26 days, but this time its due more about 2 weeks. No, not pregnant. Moon does effect our menstrual cycles. When we are in the first 3 days of the cycle and it happens to be a full moon day, the bleeding will be heavy at nights. I have experienced it first hand.

I have to agree, the moon does have an effect. I have amenhorrea (very very infrequent periods) and I'm having my first in over a year. Very bad, very crampy, and what do you know........ Supermoon cycle. I am convinced there is a link. I'll let you know if I have another ne in 18 years!

I got up this morning with a period. I was stunned to put it lightly. I thought I was over with this. Anyone knows what's going on? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you guys.

Motherwort is an emmenagogue, from what I've read. This means it increases or encourages menstruation.

I was struggling with hemorrhage for a while, came to this site, and I must confess, I was greatly relieved when I knew some other people were in my shoes and already had a cure even without visiting d hospital. These few steps have worked for me so far.. I changed my diet to include a lot of cayenne peppers in my food, and lots of water. Also, whenever I use d restroom, I insert vegetable oil in d affected part, and stand while using d restroom. This has worked so far for me... Hope everybody experiencing this situation is also cured... thanks

After 20 years of excruciating menstrual pain, excessive bleeding, clots, and huge tumors, and trying every dietary and nautral remedy I could find, I have eliminated all trouble within four cycles. I have gone from lying in bed for days on pain killers, bleeding for eight days, going through an ultra plus tampon and pad every hour, and having tumors the size of a canteloupe and a mango to painless, light, three day periods, and the cysts are shrinking!

YOU MUST ELIMINATE ALL PARABENS AND XENOESTROGENS!!!! This means no lotions (use coconut oil, almond oil etc), no detergent (this means no detergent... Not even the ones labelled "eco" or "natural"... Use borax and baking soda to wash your clothes and vinegar to soften them.... The detergent residue from laundry products stays in your clothes and is absorbed through your skin, causing great stress on your hormonal system), no shampoo or conditioner (wash your hair with borax dissolved in very hot water and then cooled slightly, rinse with apple cider vinegar sprayed on your hair and combed through... Your hair will be super soft and lovely and the vinegar scent will evaporate after a bit) , no liquid soaps on your skin (use an unscented natural Bar soap and use vinegar to wash your dishes), no perfumes, no nail polish, no hair colors, no hairspray... Etc. It was Dr. Eckhart's website and research that pointed me in the right direction. It takes a little discipline, but OMG! , it is soooooo worth it!

you might want to try blackstrap molasses. but be careful - some people say that it makes their period lighter and others say it made it worse... it made mine lighter with no clots and no pain - it just starts and i'm not even expecting it! i only take about 1/4 teaspoon a day. start small - and if you have no bad effects - increase.

something else that really helped me when my period was dragging on and on once - was soy milk. now i usually do not drink soy milk - because i know that it can have weird effects on hormones - but i was desperate because my period had been going for about 2 weeks. i am 49 and pre-menopause and do not want to take hormones. so i went to the store and bought soy milk - and drink one glass. almost immediately my bleeding stopped.

soy milk has a very powerful effect on hormones! be careful. but it definitely helped.

Hi :) I stumbled on your post today and couldn't figure out whether to reply or not. Then I thought who knows it might change your life!! Well I used to have irregular menses too and my sister too. But mine was worse : bleeding for a whole month. As for her, she would have it only after three or four months. After taking evening primrose oil, it came back to normal ... Maybe you could try to have somebody to advise you or google on the benefits of evening primrose oil. Maybe you should have a blood sample taken to know if you lack iron ... just a piece of my mind. Hope it's enough to get you on the right track. And uh, yes, I would be glad to know if it worked or not. Take care

I've been reading all sorts of articles that talk about heavy period bleeding. I usually flood two tampons at once, yes, I wear two at one time and I have to wear Depends with them. I'm 23 and I've had this problem since I was 11. I woke up at 2am this morning because I was bleeding so badly and couldn't go to sleep. I found this site read the articles and went to the 24 hour grocery store near my house. I've just taken apple cider vinegar, molasses, vitamin c and molasses. I will report back and let you know if it worked.

Have your ferritin level checked - this is directly related to iron storage. You want it to be around 70-90. My period used to be so heavy when my ferritin levels were really low. Supplementing with iron to raise this brought a big improvement in the bleeding. I took a liquid supplement which gave me no stomach or bowel problems. It does take some time to raise your levels.

CAUTION: No one should supplement with iron without knowing their levels first, and you should check them periodically when supplementing. High iron in the body can do you a lot of damage. If you do supplement, take it with vitamin C and L-lysine, and about 10 minutes or so before meals, to maximize absorption. Taking a B-complex regularly is also a good idea.

I have a friend who was cured of very heavy bleeding by drinking red raspberry leaf tea. I have also heard that taking vitex (chaste berry) extract will cure this. It's supposed to be very good for balancing hormones, male and female. It's reported to work in as little as 10 days, although it takes 3-6 months for full effect. I ordered mine from Puritan's Pride. Several people I know have just begun taking it, so I'll post results later.

Hi, I want to add to this! I have had painful periods to the point of fainting in the past, and I too found that the Chaste Tree herb did absolute wonders. I think it's full name is something like Vitex Castus Agnus or something? Anyway, it is cheap, and combined with limited dairy and a healthy diet & exercise, this completely got rid of ALL of my symptoms. I also have taken Magnesium, which was/is just as important I think, but it is definitely the Chaste Tree that has done it for me.. :)

Just putting in a vote for Omega-3 Fish Oil for managing menstrual misery.

In the spring of 2007, I was diagnosed with a uterine fibroid, about the size of a cantaloupe. I am not emotionally prepared for hysterectomy, which was the primary recommendation, of course. My online research led me to Earth Clinic. Currently, at the onset of menstruation, I take the most common brand of organic Apple Cider Vinegar with a bit of baking soda, in 8 ounces of water. For over a year, this remedy has greatly reduced the flow and scary giant clots (like a school of goldfish) that made life so miserable. My periods got so light that I started worrying that I was going into menopause at the age of 41.

Unfortunately, during the last 2-3 months, ACV has seemed to lose its potency. My periods became quite heavy again, with lots of clotting (although not at "goldfish" level). Finally I remembered my mother's first recommendation for my symptoms: 1200 mg Omega-3 Fish Oil Capsules. These were also the first remedy that worked for my fibroid symptoms. But I take more than anyone thinks is good for me: 8 in the morning, 8 in the evening, throughout my 8-day menstruation. This works very well, every time. The only reason I decided to try the ACV remedy is that I LOVE ACV!

I had my "well woman" visit about 2 months ago, and no comment was made about treating my fibroid. I don't think these remedies have shrunk the fibroid, because my belly still looks like I'm 3-4 months pregnant, but I can be pretty content if I can continue to manage the symptoms.

Thank you, Earth Clinic-ers, I love you. You give me hope for better health, naturally.

Hello,

I wanted to share my story in hopes that it will help someone.

For almost a year, I struggled with long periods, about 4 to 5 weeks at a time. I had about 2 weeks in between these long periods. I experienced flooding and went through bags of pads. I'm 50, But the doctor didn't want to diagnose me as perimenopausal, even though tests showed my Progesterone was very low.

I tried many remedies but one here at Earth Clinic caught my attention: juicing lemons and pineapples. I used my Vitamix to juice fresh lemons, grapefruits, oranges, carrots, and apples. Not only that, I added some of the Rinds and piths of the grapefruits and lemons in my juice. I drank about 1/2 to 1 cup a day. The juice is a
Little bitter but tolerable. Sometimes, I added a small beet. I also took a daily iron ferrochel biglyscinate plus Ancestral Supplements beef liver. The result is a night and day difference. This month my period was about 6 days, with flooding on just 1 to 2 days.

I quit my B complex 50 because it caused my heart to race. I had difficulty sleeping but I don't experience that anymore since I quit the B complex. Please share my experience...maybe it will help someone. Thank you.

If you do use some of the rinds, make sure the fruits are organic. Pesticide residues on citrus fruits can lead to disruptions of the estrogen hormone.

I use this remedy (Fresh Pineapple and Lemon Juice) and it has worked well for me but I do it the easy way. Using this ratio of 3/4 cup of pineapple juice (store bought is fine, you don't need fresh) and 1/4 cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice, you save time and money and still get results. I take it every two hours if I have a super heavy flow. Sometimes I double the quantities and take it two or three times a day. It always reduces the flow to a manageable level and it works fast.

I have tried virtually every other remedy on this site and the lemon/pineapple combination is the only thing that worked.

Juice Fresh Pineapple with core, Lemons with Pith

Hi, I had been heavily bleeding for 9 days.I had many other heavy bleeds before this and had already tried the following remedies with no success:

  • Low fat diet
  • homeopathic remedies (tried two different remedies)
  • cayenne pepper
  • flax oil
  • Shepard's purse tincture
  • flax oil
  • vitamin D
  • red raspberry tea
  • vitamin C with bioflavonoids
  • yarrow

I read a comment on another blog (not earth clinic), that a women juiced a whole pineapple including the core, but not the skin and with it juiced 4 lemons, carefully cutting the skin off but not removing the white pith, as you will juice the white pitch of the lemon and the lemon seeds. I drove to the store (10 min. away) and did not think I would make it through the store, without spotting, I was gushing so bad. When I got home I made the juice and drank the whole amount. It tastes bitter with the ratio of 4 lemons to one pineapple. In 4 HOURS the bleeding flow reduced by half. After 6 hours I took another juice of 1 pineapple 4 lemons, and in 3 Hours the bleeding completely stopped. Next period, flow began a little heavy, I did one juice of pineapple and lemons (Must be Fresh, must include pineapple core and lemon pith in the juice), went to normal flow never had a another heavy flow which really was a hemorrhage).

I told my sister about this, because she was having very heavy flows. One of her flows was 21 days. Her doctor had given progesterone, but it was not greatly helping. She decided to do pineapple, lemon and it stopped her flow after 21 days.
