Laryngeal spasms (also called vocal cord spasms or laryngospasms) are sudden, involuntary closures of the vocal cords that can make breathing or speaking difficult for a short period. Though brief, they can feel alarming. These spasms may be triggered by acid reflux, post-nasal drip, anxiety, or irritation from allergies or infections. Thankfully, there are several gentle and natural remedies that may help reduce their frequency and intensity.

1. Steam Inhalation

Moisture can soothe irritated airways and reduce the likelihood of spasms.

  • How to Use: Inhale steam from a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head. Add a few drops of eucalyptus or chamomile essential oil if desired.
  • Tip: A hot shower can serve the same purpose.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and nerve stability. Deficiency may contribute to spasmodic conditions.

  • How to Use: Take magnesium glycinate or citrate (200–400 mg/day). You can also apply magnesium oil to the neck and shoulders.

3. Slippery Elm or Marshmallow Root

These herbs coat and soothe the mucous membranes of the throat and larynx.

  • How to Use: Drink as tea or take lozenges to reduce dryness and irritation that may trigger spasms.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

For those whose laryngeal spasms are related to acid reflux, ACV may help balance stomach acid and reduce upward irritation.

  • How to Use: Mix 1 teaspoon in a glass of water and drink before meals. Start slowly and discontinue if symptoms worsen.

5. Breathing Techniques

Controlled breathing can help calm the body and reduce the duration of spasms during an episode.

  • Practice: Try pursed-lip breathing, slow nasal inhalation, or counting as you exhale to relax your vocal cords.
  • Tip: Focused breathing can also reduce anxiety, which may trigger spasms.

6. Hydration

Dryness of the throat is a common trigger for vocal spasms.

  • Goal: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Herbal teas, such as those made from licorice root, chamomile, or ginger, can offer additional soothing effects.

7. Nervine Herbs for Stress

Because anxiety is a common factor in laryngeal spasms, calming herbs may help reduce nervous system overactivity.

  • Examples: Passionflower, lemon balm, skullcap, and valerian root.
  • How to Use: These can be taken as teas, tinctures, or capsules.

8. Monitor and Experiment with Triggers

Laryngeal spasms can be caused by various factors in different people, including reflux, allergies, stress, and vocal strain. If one remedy doesn’t help, it may be useful to try others and track when and how your symptoms occur.

When to Seek Medical Help

While natural remedies can provide relief, laryngeal spasms that occur frequently, interfere with breathing, or are accompanied by other symptoms like hoarseness or throat pain should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. In rare cases, they may signal a neurological or structural issue.

Conclusion

With calming herbs, soothing throat remedies, breathing techniques, and awareness of triggers, many people find relief from the distressing effects of laryngeal spasms. Consistency and self-observation are key.

Does anyone have any experience with laryngeal spasms? Have you found a way to get out of them quickly?

Hi augie,

If the spasm was caused by acid from acid reflux hitting the vocal chords, baking soda water might help to quickly neutralize the acid and quell the spasm. If the spasm was caused by anxiety, applying mag oil to the appropriate area of the neck may help relax the muscles involved.

OMG! I'm thankful someone put this up. Laryngeal spasm which causes stuttering. I stuttered for 47yrs until I figured out maybe I was hyperthyroid, which I was. I had attacks of thyroiditis which causes intermittent hyperthyroidism which can cause stuttering. Eventually I had one attack upon another with no healing in between, eventually I grew a "nodule" due to the chronic irritation. However, on the thyroid scan my nodule didn't show up as a "hot" nodule or a "cold" defect, mine was white. Because of that I had to have a right lobectomy which changed my life. I couldn't stutter if I wanted to and boy I b/c a jabbermouth. I was talking fluently and I couldn't stop talking. Remember hyperthyroidism can cause stuttering and intermittent hyperthyroidism secondary to thyroiditis can cause this horrific condition. Don't blame the person or try to tell us how to stop stuttering. I was never made fun of by the other children but by adults which to me is astounding.

Remember in the end it's the recurrent nerves that are irritated for some reason and that causes the spasm of the larynx. Yes, it could be infection, it could be anxiety and that's harder to solve. You mentally perceive you're going to stutter even b/f opening your mouth and THAT causes anxiety. It's a vicious cycle that seems neverending. RFK Jr has a hereditary one that's causing his spasm and there's another Kennedy that also has the problem. Acupuncture is also excellent, I had ear acupuncture with my acupuncturist hitting on the "center of wellbeing" in my ear" it help a lot. I discovered mine by accident but one day this will a "condition" of the past, I'm sure of it.
