I am Bulgarian, living in China at present. As a child, whenever I had diarrhoea, my grandma would give me a few drops of iodine in half a glass of water to drink. It would halt the problem within hours. When my son was 10 months old, he had a severe diarrhoea and after trying a few medicines, the elderly doctor suggested the same remedy for him - 2 drops in some water. The next day he was healthy again. As a school administrator in Beijing I got almost sued by a Finnish mother for administering the remedy to her 8 year old daughter on a trip. There was a bus, full of kids, going to another city 5 hours away and, even though I knew in many countries it was forbidden to take iodine orally, I didn't have a choice. The bus didn't have to stop anywhere on the road and the girl was fine. I have talked with doctors about it and they said that if taken rarely, it's not doing harm. In Bulgaria generations have been treated in this way and I never travel (especially to another country) without my little black bottle. For chool children the dose is 4-5 drops in water and for adults - 5 to 8. Sometimes adults need to repeat on the next day, if the problem persists.

I can attest to this remedy, I was living in Fiji Islands as a child and remember my mom giving iodine in water for diahrrea which I used to get from drinking water from other peoples wells, funny but true. Same thing has happened to me in the US for the past 30 yrs (I travel a lot). My favorite remedy is cinnamon, cloves and honey remedy. Haven't tried iodine since I didn't know the ratio. Thanks for sharing. EarthClinic is becoming my fav site for home remedies. Appreciate lots.

For diarrhea: Lemon water. I have found that drinking lemon water has stopped my 6 months of diarrhea. This is amazing. One 16 oz water bottle( drink some to make room for juice), squeeze one fresh lemon, pour into water bottle. Sip all day. Then do this again the next day and sip on this one bottle for 2 days. Keep making one bottle last 2days and always drink with a straw as to not damage teeth. Best results after about two weeks. This drink also alkalizes your body. Lemon turns into an alkaline after ingested.

Bonus: sleeping through the night.

Matchstick Remedy

Posted by Rw (Southwest Virginia) on 11/22/2015

I've not had the occasion to use this, but it was so intriguing I had to post it. If you Google "matchstick diarrhea Joepathy" you'll find more info on it, and the matchstick remedy is supposed to be good for other things. But here is what to do for diarrhea (and I haven't been able to tell if any matches will do or just the safety matches they have in Sri Lanka where Joe lives):

Take 2 Matches from a matchbox and light one.
Have the second match handy in your hand and light it from the first.
Dunk it immediately into a cup of water so that it will light and extinguish itself in the water.
Repeat the same process 3 times over with 3 sets of matches for best results.

Give the patient a teaspoonful from the water every hour or every time after a bowel movement.

I'd love to know if this works. Would be an easy thing to take on an international trip.

EC: Interesting testimonials and discussion about what is contained in a match head found on above-referenced site here.

My mom's home remedy for diarrhea was to boil a cup of milk and drink it - no sugar. Hold your nose because it tastes awful. Let it cool down a bit first.

I learned this from my great grandmother who used it all the time.

If you have problems with diarrhea take two cups of whole milk (IT HAS TO BE WHOLE MILK) and boil it to a rolling boil. (It takes a long time to get to boil, but once it does...it will boil over so watch it close). Let the milk cool and as it cools it forms a skim over the top of the milk, peel it off and drink it.

It works guaranteed. But as always if you continue to have problems see a dr.

It worked!

Usually apple cider vinegar does the trick for me, but it wasn't working. The best Apple Cider Vinegar did was to space out my visits to the bathroom.

After over 12 hours experiencing completely liquid diarrhea, I saw this post and boiled 2 cups of whole milk, turned off the stove before it boiled over, waited to cool, remove the skin that formed and drank it.

Felt better right away and today I have no more problems. Thank you!

When I was a little girl if I had an upset stomach my grandmother would mix up black strap molasses and a small amount of baking soda. She would wait for a while as it puffed up and then would give me a spoonful. It always worked , so I tried recently and after 45 years it still does.

Several people in my family got a stomach flu with diarrhea. I didn't get the stomach flu but got a bad case of diarrhea. After 2 days of this I started bleeding a lot of bright red blood when having a bowel movement. I searched the web for possibilities then came to earth clinic and found cures for all the likely possibilities it could be. I found a few post that described similar symptoms. I combined these to come up with a cure that worked for me.

Every morning I would make a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, after eating the oatmeal I would drink a glass of water that had 1/3 cup of aloe vera juice added. As I drank this I would take 2000 mg of garlic capsules, 2000 mg vitamin c, 1500 mg tumeric capsules, and I would chew two papaya enzyme tablets. After this I would drink a glass of water that had 2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar added. For lunch and dinner I would drink the water with aloe vera and take the garlic, tumeric, vitamin c and papaya enzyme but not the apple cider vinegar. At meals and snacks I ate high fiber foods mostly. I did this for 10 days. In less than 24 hours I felt much better. After 48 hours I had no bleeding and my appetite returned. After 6 days I felt back to normal but continued the treatment for the full 10 days. It has now been over a week since I stopped this treatment and still feel good. I am a 51 year old male and I have been taking 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water for over a year every morning and I take 1000 mg vitamin c at each meal. For my allergies I use a netti pot with 2 cups of water and a teaspoon of sea salt.

To stop diarrhea in adults, pour 1 teaspoon (for kids use 1/4 teaspoon) of ground nutmeg in a spoon. Fill a glass with at least 2 cups of water. Put the spoon of ground nutmeg into your mouth. Drink the glass of water and eat the teaspoon of nutmeg at the same time.

Wait two hours while drinking plenty of water. If you still have diarrhea at this point, eat another 1 teaspoon and 2 cups of water. If diarrhea persists then stop use and try something else.

This worked wonders when I was in grade school!

Parasite Cleanse for Chronic Diarrhea

In December of 2012 I suddenly began having watery, explosive diarrhea up to 30 times a day! I couldn't work, as I drive for a living. I tried almost every remedy on this site and others. The first thing my doctor did, at my request, was order a parasite test. It came back negative (which was not accurate). As the months went by and I kept losing weight, the doctor eventually had me tested for hyperthyroid. I developed extreme, forceful rapid heartbeat, anytime I ate. I would actually see the undigested food I ate in the toliet, it went through me within an hour or 2. I was then diagnosed with hyperthyroid and began seeing an endocronoligist and taking prescribed medication. After the second day on medication, something within myself said to at least try a parasite cleanse. By this time I had been off work 8 months and had lost 30 lbs. I looked like I was dying and I was actually starving to death because everything went through me so quickly. I purchased a good quality 28 day parasite cleanse and from the very first dose, something just felt different within me. By the third or fourth day, I started seeing these weird parasites in the toliet. Day after day, hundreds. Not worms, but weird bug like things called cryptosporidium. By the time the 28 day cleanse was over, I no longer had diarrhea! I went back to work, and now, a year later that nightmare is just a distant memory. I got to thinking about it later that testing for parasites is probably often not accurate because if they came out in your stool you wouldn't have parasites! A real DUH moment for me.

I used a product at Whole Foods Market. The product contains some pills and a tincture of Wormwood. It was just after I first took the wormwood tincture that I felt a profound stillness in my whole being, like the parasites had been stunned. Yes, I believe I know how I got the parasites. Since I always wash my produce before I eat it, I believe I got them at a restaurant from someone else who was infected and then prepared my food without washing their hands. They probably had parasite eggs under their fingernails. An interesting thing that happened about a month before I started getting the diarrhea was that one day I started having very hard contractions in my belly, the whole abdominal area. No pain, just very strong contractions. It lasted the whole day and it was only for one day. It was very weird, as I had never had anything like that before if I wasn't actually having a baby! I think that could have been my body's first attempt at getting rid of the infestation. I also had fairly severe pain in the left leg during this time of diarrhea. When the parasites left, so did the leg pain!! I think they were nesting in an intestinal area adjacent to a nerve and just the bulk of them was enough to irritate that nerve that goes down into the leg!

Zinc boosts immune health and copper counterbalances zinc. Copper kills parasites. A good pumpkin cinnamon, clove, nutmeg treat would work wonders. Lemon and Ginger will help a lot for liver health and gut calming. I had c -diff once so I am very familiar with diarrhea. Barley water is said to help a lot. You are already suffering an extreme detox may be unwise. Another tip might be your body is trying to rid an imbalance. If you do a detox now you may really have a big problem. Electrolytes are key in diarrhea. Keep them in balance. I used a lot of Immodium.

My grandmother always had us drink some dill pickle juice for diarrhea. Usually worked within a day!

Her remedies were passed down from her mother and grandmother She believed in castor oil...or Black Draught syrup...Clover Salve... If one of those didn't cure you or kill you....then you went to the doctor (she always called him the 'pill-crusher')

I can vouch for the dill pickle juice.

Hello Meme,

How do you make Black Draught syrup and Clover salve?

I love the 'Old" remedies.

Black Draught

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_draught

Clover Salve

Any salve can be made with an infused oil (infuse with the plant you want to use) This would vary based on the oils you choose, infusion method and plant. Then you add 1/3 part of infused oil, 1/3 other carrier oils (selected for properties) and 1/3 natural beeswax. These recipes could have been as numerous as the homes that used them based on what clovers were accessible in the area. Red Clover is supposed to be a good one for skin issues.

Beeswax has to be melted to mix - but that is all. infuse, melt, mix, cool. You can find basic infusion methods on the internet and many different salve recipes as well as tutorials also. Unless you had a 'clover oil' then you would want to infuse yourself. Its not difficult and saves money although not time :)

Pickle Juice (remedy) for Diarrhea:

My family has been using this remedy for years and years. It really works!!! This remedy is used when you have a bad case of diarrhea. Just take at least 3Tbsp. of pickle juice (from the regular plain Dill Pickles jar) and right away you'll start to feel better and you won't have to worry about running to the bathroom. It really works wonders!!! Good Luck!!!

I stumbled across this diarrhea remedy by accident. Dill pickle juice! I drank about 3/4 of a cup from the bottom of a jar of sliced dill pickle spears and whoa! I noticed that it had worked so well against post-prandial diarrhea that I became constipated for only the 5th or 6th time in my life! So use it in smaller amounts, but try it, it tastes great and garlicky and interesting too. It seemed miraculous because I'd almost daily or more often get diarrhea after eating so many foods for the last 5 years or so, and had even curtailed trips to the store or anywhere until I was sure I was "empty" and even then sometimes I'd have to dump my shopping cart and make a B line to the store bathroom, so anxiety-producing! But now the diarrhea is cured as far as I can tell. I mean I now have a totally normal bowel response with no running off within 5 minutes to 1/2 hr. of eating formerly diarrhea-causing foods. It has been about 2 weeks now and I seem to be normal, like other people who just eat and travel and so on without worrying about how far to a rest stop or how close ot a toilet they are. I can hardly believe it. Dill pickle juice (or dill pickle relish) work. I only found the remedy by craving pickles suddenly. I had both a little relish and a few spears plus the juice left in the jar sitting nice and cold in the fridge and man they seem to have done the trick within 10 mins or so, plus long-term. So cheap, so easy, so fast so open the jar and get some down yourself. I only wish I could drink more but I think it works too well because before I had figured out that was what had stopped diarrhea, I was enjoying them so much that I bought a new jar of pickles to eat and of course I overdid it and then got constipated, a new and unwelcome experience. I treated that finally after a few days of no-go with 2 capfuls of milk of magnesia because I was totally unaccustomed to constipation and found it very uncomfortable. Then I was perfect just like others. Only someone who's been under the misery of chronic diarrhea or sudden diarrhea can appreciate what a life-changing thing that cure can be. Travel! Go out! Stop fearing "what if" problems and go eat out or swim or anything. Dill juice rules!

Worked for me too some while back. I took 1/2 teaspoon at 1/2 hour interval. Than prepared long grain rice leaving it a bit watery and adding a pinch of salt and pinch molasses. After any bout with diarrhea I always eat foods that are neutral that goes easy on the stomach, anything that has a bit of starch/carbs.

Freshly made Pomegranate juice is a miracle cure for diarrhea. Make u drain out juice after juicing. Instead of juicing you can crush seeds in your mouth, take in juice and spit out seeds. That is what I liked to do since had no energy for juicing at that time. You can eat a porridge of tapioca root. Combination pomegranate and tapioca root works wonders.
