POEMS syndrome is a rare medical condition characterized by several symptoms, including Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal gammopathy, and Skin changes. The cause of this syndrome is not entirely clear, and treatment often focuses on managing individual symptoms. While medical treatment is crucial, natural remedies can complement their medical care and improve their quality of life.

What is POEMS?

The acronym "POEMS" stands for:

Polyneuropathy: This refers to nerve damage, often manifesting as weakness, numbness, or pain, typically in the hands and feet.
Organomegaly: Enlargement of internal organs, commonly including the liver, spleen, or lymph nodes.
Endocrinopathy: Abnormal hormone levels which can lead to symptoms like diabetes, hypothyroidism, or gynecomastia.
Monoclonal gammopathy: an abnormal protein in the blood, often associated with certain bone marrow disorders.
Skin changes: This can include hyperpigmentation, thickening, or other alterations in the skin's appearance.

Together, these features form the criteria for the diagnosis of POEMS syndrome. The exact cause of this syndrome is not completely understood, and its treatment is tailored to the specific manifestations in the affected individual.

Holistic Treatments

While no holistic treatments can cure POEMS syndrome, several can alleviate some symptoms:

  • Acupuncture: Known for its pain-relieving effects, acupuncture may help manage neuropathic pain associated with POEMS syndrome.
  • Meditation and Deep Breathing: Stress can exacerbate many conditions, and meditative practices can help manage stress and promote relaxation.
  • Yoga: Gentle yoga exercises can improve flexibility and reduce muscle stiffness and pain.
  • Massage Therapy: Regular massages can promote blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate pain. Opt for therapists experienced in treating neuropathic conditions.
  • Biofeedback: This technique trains individuals to control physiological functions for improved health. It might help in managing pain and stress related to POEMS syndrome.
  • Aromatherapy: Essential oils like lavender and chamomile can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Always use them as directed and ensure no allergic reactions.

Natural Remedies for POEMS

Supplements and herbs might offer relief for some people with POEMS syndrome. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment:

  • Vitamin B Complex: Supports nerve function and can potentially alleviate neuropathic symptoms.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Known for their anti-inflammatory properties, they may help reduce inflammation in the body.
  • Turmeric: Curcumin, the active component in turmeric, has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  • Magnesium: This essential mineral plays a role in nerve function and might help reduce muscle cramps and neuropathic pain.
  • Green Tea: Rich in antioxidants, green tea may help combat oxidative stress in the body, potentially benefiting those with POEMS syndrome.
  • Ginger: Renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger might help reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Alpha-lipoic Acid: Some studies suggest it might help in neuropathic conditions by protecting nerves.
  • Evening Primrose Oil: Contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which may benefit nerve health.

Conclusion

A multifaceted approach encompassing medical and holistic treatments can be beneficial in the quest to manage POEMS syndrome. From acupuncture and yoga to dietary supplements like turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids, these natural remedies might offer relief and complement traditional treatments. Nonetheless, always collaborate closely with healthcare professionals before incorporating any new therapies.

POEMS Syndrome Remedies

My dad was diagnosed with POEMS syndrome last year, he's currently on chemotherapy with little improvement, suffering with severe nerve damage to his legs and feet. Some really interesting articles here on melatonin, Vit B1,6 and 12. Would really appreciate if anyone with this syndrome has found a natural alternative to chemotherapy they could share.

From a brief scan this looks similar to a selenium and iodine deficiency plus arsenic and/or other heavy metal toxicity. Probably malnutrition in general, maybe other toxicity like cigarettes, DDT or some such. (I'm not a doctor, I just read a lot) If he were me I would do as follows: First thing every morning do the Sea salt colon cleanse - look it up *must be done away from food and drinks to work correctly ie on an empty stomach An hour later Fresh lemon juice, a pinch of Cayenne, and fresh grated ginger root (a 1 inch piece) in a glass of cool water every day - may add vitamin C per Linus Pauling For breakfast smoothies made of fresh Leafy greens such as parsley, cilantro, collards, rosemary, thyme, etc. - add a teaspoon of baking soda and a couple drops of Lugol's iodine (look up how to use Lugol's) For lunch drink a potent Meal replacement supplement (such as Ensure - my favorite, or Boost) For dinner Hot, thin soups with cabbage, turmeric, cayenne, mustard seed powder, garlic, onion, tofu, miso, mushrooms, lemongrass, thyme. Look up "low residue diet" Baking soda 1/2 tsp. in a large glass of water before bed - look up Ted's alkalizing remedy on EarthClinic Simple, soft foods like baked eggplant, hummus, fresh aloe gel Veeeery low carb/sugar, use organic virgin coconut oil if extra calories are needed Avoid potentially inflammatory foods like dairy, tomatoes, potatoes, cracked peppercorns, etc., no smoking, alcohol, recreational drugs Plenty of pure filtered water - no fluoride, no tap water, no soda/Coke, coffee, store bought pasteurized juices, milk, chocolate, caffeine Herbal tea is probably OK - esp. Elderberry, slippery elm, chamomile, dandelion There are various liver cleanses, chanca piedra, wormwood that may benefit him Hot baths with Epsom salt and baking soda every day, full body massage with organic virgin coconut oil - not mineral oil, sun bathing, lots of rest This is all depending upon his ability to tolerate it, everyone is different so use caution and educate yourself. Cleaning up his elimination channels (colon, kidneys, etc.) and providing adequate nutrition are likely the first step to his recovery. Best wishes
