Bronchitis is when the lining of the bronchial tubes becomes inflamed. This inflammation results in coughing which usually brings up mucus. Chest discomfort, fever, and fatigue are common also. Natural cures for bronchitis include apple cider vinegar, garlic, and oregano oil. Soothing herbs like slippery elm can help ease chest pain and discomfort from acute bouts of coughing.
Natural Remedies for Bronchitis
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar taken in water provides nutrients to the body and helps it to alkalize. Hot vinegar tea is the best way to take apple cider vinegar when there is a cough. The hot tea is soothing, healing and hydrating.
Hot Vinegar Tea
- 1-2 Tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon raw honey
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional, but lovely)
- 6-8 ounces hot water
Mix together in a mug. Enjoy this beverage liberally. It transports well in a thermos for work if days off are an impossibility!
2. Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver fights infection. It can be taken internally, gargled, or used in a nebulizer. Because of its broad spectrum uses, learning to make it at home will provide a nearly unlimited supply of colloidal silver for countless ailments.
3. Hydrogen Peroxide
3% hydrogen peroxide, the kind in the brown bottle in the grocery store, has been used to heal a variety of lung issues with the “Hydrogen Peroxide Inhalation Method.”
Garlic is antiviral, antibacterial1 and anti-inflammatory. It can be taken raw or in capsules. DIY garlic oil can be rubbed onto the back or chest to get the garlic to the lungs quickly. If using raw or encapsulated garlic, 4 doses a day are ideal.
5. Oregano Oil
Oregano oil has strong antiviral and antibacterial properties. It can be purchased in ready-made capsules or 1 drop can be added to orange juice. Do not use oregano oil straight in the mouth as it can burn!
Oregano oil can also be massaged into the bottoms of the feet at bedtime. It is best to dilute in a carrier oil, like coconut oil or castor oil. Use 5 drops oregano oil per teaspoon carrier oil.
Turmeric fights infection and inflammation. Turmeric capsules can be taken 2-4 times daily. (2-4 capsules each time.) Golden milk is another option. Do not use dairy milk when bronchitis is a problem. Almond milk is preferred when there is a cough.
7. Vitamin C
Vitamin C supports the immune system and can help thin the mucus, making coughing more productive and comfortable. For more information about high dose vitamin C therapy, see this page.
Dry air can aggravate coughing. Making a steam tent and adding some essential oils to the water that is steaming can deliver moisture and healing right where they are needed the most.
Bring 2 cups of water to boil in a small pot. Remove from heat. Add 2 drops of any or all of the following:
- Oregano oil
- Clove oil
- Cinnamon oil
- Peppermint Oil
Use a towel to cover the head and make a “tent” so that the steam cannot escape. Slowly breath in the steam. Steam for 10 minutes or so, several times a day.
Taking a few days to rest is important! Pushing through bronchitis to keep working makes it harder for the body to heal. Staying home and resting allows time to use natural remedies, take healing baths and let the immune system work!
Keeping the body well hydrated with water, herbal teas, and apple cider vinegar tea will help keep mucus in the lungs thin and easier to get out. Plenty of fluids also allows the body to eliminate toxins easily. Milk (and ice cream) should be avoided during a bout of bronchitis.
High or prolonged fever, coughing up blood, or if home remedies are not providing any relief are indications that a consultation with a medical professional would be wise.
If cigarette smoking is causing chronic bronchitis, look at local options to help with quitting. Some doctors offices and hospitals offer programs to assist those who wish to quit.
What is Bronchitis?
Two types of bronchitis exist, acute and chronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis is a short-term condition where the airways of the lungs (called the bronchi) become inflamed. A cough from acute bronchitis can take weeks to heal, unfortunately, while the bronchial tree recovers from severe inflammation.
Symptoms of Acute Bronchitis can include:
- Chest Tenderness or Discomfort
- Shortness of Breath
- Sore Throat
- Body Chills
What Causes Acute Bronchitis?
A virus commonly causes this condition. The same virus that causes a cold or flu can also cause bronchitis. The virus attacks the bronchial passages creating inflammation.
Less common causes of acute bronchitis are from irritants, bacteria, and mold. A person can be susceptible to bronchitis if they have pre-existing damage in the bronchial tree from pneumonia, for example.
What is Chronic Bronchitis?
This form of bronchitis develops over time rather than appearing suddenly and is a much more serious a condition. It’s signature symptoms are recurring episodes of bronchitis that go on and on, lasting months or even a year or more.
Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis can include:
- Cough, Persistent and Heavy
- Lung Mucus, Colored Yellow, Green or White
- Sinus Congestion
- Breathing Difficulties Which Worsen Over Time
- Wheezing Which Worsens Over Time
- Severe Fatigue
- Bad Breath
- Bluish Skin and Lips
