Please can you help me, I have been suffering with a strange tongue. Nothing has changed in my medications. But I have developed a black/purpleish tongue and the tongue is sore all the time. It's burning and feels salty all the time worse after eating. Please help as I've tried everything.
I never see anything called black tongue but there is brown, I think. Mine is black, for sure, and has built up quite a ridge-effect. I can scrape and some will come out each time but no real disappearance of any of it. It may coincide with the start of my very successful use of Hydrogen Peroxide sprayed into my mouth several times a day which has, in my opinion, cured my emphysema. (The inhalation activity we are all so grateful for.) Does anyone have information on my black tongue?
I had read somewhere that it could be from antibiotics.
Okay, I just got my hands on an old Mayo Clinic Family Health Book. I'm going to copy what it says about "Black, hairy tongue": "An overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth can cause discoloration of the tongue. Some types of bacteria and yeast produce red blood cell pigments that may give the tongue a black appearance. In addition, the papillae can grow profusely, causing the tongue to look as though hair covers it." (Copyright 2003)
Hope this helps…I had this some time ago and felt I looked like I was part Chow. I had been on antibiotics.
It is not serious. "You can remove the discoloration and hair-like growths by gently brushing your tongue with your toothbrush." You can pick up some Floss Picks, they are also tongue scrapers.
