Acinetobacter bacteria is a common bacteria found in soil, water and even sewage. Basically, all throughout the environment via dirt and debris.

Because there are no readily available vaccines to those that contract these gram negative infections other methods must be implemented to prevent spreading of the bacteria. The condition can be passed from person to person but can be reduced by careful hand washing and very clean conditions. As the condition is prevalent in hospitals, health care providers can cut down on the spread of the infection with a few simple hygiene procedures. This includes hand washing upon entering a patients room and when leaving, as well as the use of gloves and gowns at all times.
