Scalp infection remedies range from natural cleansers to nutritional supplements and dietary changes. In any case, though, the goal is eliminating the infection causing bacteria, fungus or virus. The most effective treatment regimens pair cleansing tonics with moisturizing applications to safely eliminate infection and maintain overall skin health.
What is a Scalp Infection?
Three main types of scalp infection have been identified: fungal, bacterial and viral. Parasitic infestation is another common cause of scalp infection.
While these infections do not typically pose major health risks, the conditions cause excessive itching, redness, pus-filled blisters, inflammation and other symptoms. The condition can even lead to hair breakage and hair loss if left untreated.
Ted’s Scalp Infection Remedies
This information on treating Scalp Infections was sent to us by Ted from Bangkok in 2003. Ted was a famous contributor on the Earth Clinic website until his stroke in 2015.
Ted writes: “Apple Cider Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide are used as a shampoo to cure scalp infections. You can also mix chamomile, tea tree and lavender oils together and apply to the scalp as a shampoo. Do not take these remedies internally!
I have treated successful over 100 people with persistent scalp infections by preparing a shampoo made of just tea tree and lavender oil alone and have been successful.
Recipe using Apple Cider Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide:
Dilute them by 1:10: 1 part ACV, 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide with 10 parts water. Use like a shampoo and rinse after the shampoo is “finished” to make the cure for scalp infections even more potent.
Leave the mixed solution on scalp for about one minute before rinsing away in water. Repeat this again if the infection is severe enough. Avoid getting the solution in the eyes as it may cause stinging. You do not need large amounts of the concoction, only small amounts… just enough to get it to the scalp.
The most effective solution for those who also have a severe form of scalp infection (and loss of hair) is the use of pure tea tree oil plus lavender. The mixture is 4 parts tea tree oil to 1 part lavender oil. Some people may feel a painful sting, so you may dilute this further with olive oil. Leave it on for the whole night. I have tried it on my mother (a pure solution, but I dilute it with aloe vera oil) and it cured her of hair loss – and she is about 74 years old. My sister and a friend also have severely itchy scalps. Using the same essential oils noted above worked very well. Warning: the quality source of lavender and tea tree may vary and may not work with the same degree.”

The skin of the scalp is equally as sensitive as any other skin. As such, treatments for scalp infections must be gentle enough to maintain skin health but intensive enough to eradicate infection. Apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and tea tree oil are among the most effective treatments for scalp infections.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a natural antifungal agent. This substance works to naturally restore the pH balance to the body and eliminate fungus, bacteria and virus that may be causing infection. This vinegar is also rich in vitamins and minerals that replenish the skin.
Hydrogen peroxide is a safe germicidal agent composed only of oxygen and water. As such, hydrogen peroxide effectively kills infectious organisms through oxidation, a process much like controlled burning. When slightly diluted, this substance serves as an effective cleanser and sanitizer for the scalp.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil functions as both an antifungal agent as well as a moisturizer. As effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil cleanses, removes infectious organisms and revitalizes the skin.
Several different types of scalp infections exist and range from fungal to bacterial or viral. Whatever the cause, these infections can cause itching, inflammation and dry skin as well as other symptoms. Natural treatments, however, are particularly effective for treating these conditions with little threat to the rest of the skin and body.
