Sea salt in water, also known as the “Sea Salt Cleanse” can be a very effective natural remedy for constipation. Sea salt and water are combined and consumed. Bowel movements are usually achieved within hours of taking this remedy.
How Much Sea Salt Should I Use for Constipation?
The “Sea Salt Cleanse” recipe is 2 teaspoons of sea salt in 4 cups (1 quart) of water. The sea salt should be a high quality salt, like Celtic sea salt or Himalayan pink salt. Ideally the water you use is filtered or distilled. Dissolve the sea salt in the water. Using cold water makes the taste less noticeable. A squeeze of lemon juice added to the mixture can also improve the taste. Using a straw will also help to get the mixture down more easily. Try to consume the entire drink within an hour. Do not eat while drinking your sea salt water and wait at least a couple of hours after the cleanse to resume light solids.
Sea Salt Cleanse Cautions
This remedy needs to be taken on an empty stomach. 4 cups is a lot of liquid and if your stomach is already full of food, you will likely be very uncomfortable adding so much liquid to your stomach. Even better is to eat a light vegetarian diet for a day or two before using this cleanse.
You should plan to use this remedy on a day when you will be home all day. While you may expect to be visiting the restroom within 15 minutes to 2 hours of taking this remedy, you may have frequent restroom visits all day.
This is not a remedy to be taken every day for constipation. This cleanse will help to bring your relief and clean your system, but ideally you will get to the root of your constipation problem and prevent the future need for this remedy, except for an occasional cleanse for health purposes.
This remedy is somewhat stressful to the body. You may wish to take probiotics or have some probiotic food, like kefir or yogurt, after the cleanse. You should eat lightly for at least a day or so after using this remedy.
If you have kidney disease, high blood pressure, or any other significant health condition, you should consult with your doctor before using a large amount of salt.
This cleanse will cause everything to move through your digestive tract quickly. If you are taking prescription medication, it could affect your medication. Ideally you will not need any medication 2 hours before or after you try the sea salt cleanse.
