I have been using organic blackstrap molasses for almost 2 years now for uterine fibroids to control the bleeding and one thing I know it's that only organic works to stop the break through bleeding and the plantation brand does not work. Tree of life is the only brand I have found that is organic and works. I can get a large bottle at nutrition.com for 7.29. Unfortunately it has not reversed or stopped the growth of the fibroids but it did stop the heavy and break through bleeding and I have normal periods now. Once I had to buy the plantation brand because my local health food store was out of my regular one and within 2 days I started bleeding so it does not work. I compared the nutritional value levels and the plantation brand had lower levels. I take 1 tablespoon every morning. I was on the verge of having to have a blood transfusion because my blood was so low, this stuff completely reversed it.

Over my childhood (5 years old to 10 years old), I was anemic. My mom, having been raised in Louisiana, used a lot of the "known" foods from that region. Blackstrap Molasses, greens (mustard, turnip, collard), cream of wheat, calf liver (beef liver tends to be less tender than calf), and chicken livers. I was very healthy in those early years (not too bad now at age 62).
The only things I picked up in those few years? Chicken Pox, German Measles, and Tonsillitis resulting in the "dreaded" Tonsillectomy.
For years after I have used these food for the content of iron. And I thoroughly enjoy all those foods... As for the MOLASSES? Love it straight!!! And only found out about other types of syrup for pancakes/waffles etc. When I turned 10. Still prefer molasses (and only the Blackstrap) over anyother syrup!!!

Black Strap Molasses / Anemia
When working in the hospital as the case manager for patients who would refuse blood transfusions (the majority of my patients were not for religous reasons, rather for health concerns) there would be some who the blood building drug EPO would not work.
According to the manufacturer guidelines, the TIBC (total iron binding capicity) study needed to be used and not the traditioinal iron stores that the docs typically asked for. When the EPO did not work, the TIBC was always low. On getting a doctors order and approval from the pharmacy, we gave one table spoon of BSM mixed with peanut butter three times a day.
We saw 3 grams per dl increase in RBC (red blood cell) counts in as little as 24 hours. It was not that the body was making blood miraculously as it takes 2 weeks for a stem cell (red blood cell wanna-be's) to mature, rather the theory was that the signaling that the blood would be available soon caused a release of shunted blood.
This happened in patients with hemaglobin blood counts as low as 2.9 (the lowest I case managed). Counts continued to rise for the next few days until they were at safe levels. Most were cancer patients. Research shows that avoiding blood transfusions decreases the risk of metastatic cancer. BSM makes this possible. None of my BSM doped patients returned with metastatic cancer. In time we discovered that EPO was not needed when there was no arthritis. The BSM worked on its own.
In over 600 patients I cared for, not only did none die, they often got out of the hospital faster (1/2 to 3 days) and cheaper than those who got blood. The oldest, a 79 year old woman, got out three days faster than a 35 year old who got blood, both with broken hips. More importantly, The BSM doped patients had lower morbidity (getting sick) and lower mortality (dying) rates that those who got blood.
It should be noted, the only way to get this care is to go to a hospital that specializes in advance transfusion practice or bloodless medicine care.
Now as a holistic nurse, this is one of the treatments of choice for many of my patients who have Risk for 'Altered Nutrition: Less than body requirement to maintain normal red blood cell count (this is a nursing diagnosis for someone who has a medical diagnosis of the various types of anmeia).'
For those with arthritis, I decrease the BSM to a teaspoon once a day and add one raw red beet to their weekly diet.

Anemia is a condition in which your blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells. The normal level of haemoglobin is generally different in males (13.5 gms/100ml) and females (12gms/100ml).
It is directly or indirectly responsible for many diseases. This is because the lowered oxygen carrying capacity of the blood leads to poor oxygenation of tissue, which in turn results in degenerative changes and a general drop in immunity. As Ayurvedic Practitioner and doctor I have seen many cases of Anemia and the results of treatment using different allopathic, Homeopathic and Ayurvedic (herbal) remedies.
Allopathy may reduce the symptoms of anemia like generalised weakness but will not help in underlying causes for anemia.
Homeopathic remedies for anemia can be prescribed on the patient's constitution along with herbal remedies. This is very effective but success generally depends upon the doctor's ability to pick the right remedy for the patient.
Some of them are:
China 30; Chinin sulph 30; Cuprum met 30; Ferrum met 6x; Ferrum proh 6x; Nat mur 6x; Phos 200; Phos AC. 30, Allium Cepa 1X; Hyssopus Officinalis 1X; Avena Sativa 2X; Urtica Urens 2X; Paloondo 2X; Zingiber Officinale 3X; Trifolium Pratense 3X; Melilotus Alba 3X; Camphora 4X; Capsicum Annuum 5X; Magnesia Phosphorica 6X; Juglans Regia 6X; Pyrogenium 9X.
New resonance homeopathy has excellent homeopathic remedies like
Potentized Bioenergetic Impressions of Liver tissue (lyophilized) 500. 0; L- ascorbic acid (vitamin C) 100.0; Iron (aspartate) 30.0; Niacine (vitamin B3) 30.0; Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) 5.0; Copper (aspartate) 2.0; Folic acid. 40 (400mcg); Cobalamin (vitamin B12). 10 (100mcg)
Ayurveda also has numerous herbs and medicines to correct the Anemia and underlying causes and give lasting relief from Anemia.
In my experience the best results come from taking Ayurvedic herbs and homeopathic remedies (classical and resonance) together. You may get details at biogetica.com

My wife is pregnant and is also anemic (has come very close to fainting) and is also hypoglycemic (coconut oil has helped along with snacks throughout the day). She has been taking iron supplements even before she was told to. My mom told me about Blackstrap Molasses from earthclinic which we both visit often but of course overlooked anemia here. My wife has been taking Blackstrap Molasses for about 5-6 weeks now and the doctor called this morning, her iron levels are going up (still low though) and said if she keeps at the amount she has been doing she should be fine by delievery (will continue to take it after also). I have also noticed she is much more clear-headed and alert now, the hemoglobin is finally starting to be able to do its job! Thanks for everyone's posts.

Hello, My name is Diana. I have an ongoing problem with heavy periods and fibroids but at my age I did not want a hysterectomy. I am going to try the apple cider vinegar. I have already started using the kind with the mother in it. They say it is the best. I have to use iron supplements as well and I just wanted to let you know that I use an iron supplement that works really well for me and it is called "Blood Builder" from a place called Wellness. Iron supplements make me really sick but this one usually does really good for me. I still have to take food though before I take any kind of supplements. I always have. When I first started using the "Blood Builder" iron supplement my blood was really low and when I went back to the doctor to have it rechecked they could not get over how great my blood was. They were thrilled. They told me they had never seen it that good before. I really like them and just wanted to let all of you know in case you may want to try something different.

My mother has had normocytic anemia for years and years. This is when each red blood cell is in good shape, but the amount of red blood cells is fewer than there should be. She has taken iron pills (ferrous sulfate) for a while now and it has slightly helped, but she has still had the anemia. In the past year she has had severe kidney ailments and was hospitalized and given several blood transfusions. Recently I have been taking care of her and she has been eating a lot healthier, taking herbs for her liver and kidneys, drinking ACV, and drinking a smoothie with fruits and vegetables every day. Her health has drastically improved, but she still had the anemia.
However, about 2 weeks ago I started putting a cup of beet kvass in her smoothies and on her most recent visit to the doctor, her anemia improved quite a bit. She still has it, but it's gotten way better. She also takes the iron supplement still, but that alone wasn't doing it. I'm certain it's the beet kvass that has improved her red blood cell count.

Iron Inhibitors in Your Iron Rich Vegetables:
One problem with a list of food based solely on the content of a metal is that some foods themselves contain substances that inhibit iron absorption. Spinach is high in oxalic acid which can be cooked off in boiled spinach (discard the water) or in steamed spinach. A wilted spinach salad may be in order if the steam water is allowed to run off. The immature soy beans contain phytic acid which inhibit your iron absorption as well.

Reply to Lee, BSM is a much better solution for anemia. Iron compounds to correct anemia need to be under stringent medical control. As early as 1928 they were found to destroy Vitamin E. Later studies showed that taking ferrous sulfate and other iron compounds tremendously increase the need for oxygen, pantothenic acid and several nutrients, that they harm the unsaturated fatty acids, and destroy carotene and vitamins A, C and E. When protein intake is low, iron compounds can cause liver damage.
Where iron deficiency occurs one must look first to the diet, heavy reliance on processed foods can be a cause, lack of B6, B12 & E also, if no problems there then some other things need to be considered. Loss of blood through internal bleeding (as per stomach ulcer) heavy menstrual flow for women and young girls. Increased ferritin levels indicating that the body is storing iron to make it unavailable for pathogens or parasites (also cancer). Blood tests for anemia should in my opinion also include the test for ferritin. I understand the current upper ferritin level in U. S. is 20 though lately some experts claim 0-10 is preferred.
It is hard to have a normal diet low in iron, so anemia should always be investigated and not simply "treated" with iron pills.

My doctor told me to check the color of the inside of your bottom eye lid. If it is very pale, you could be anemic.

★☆☆☆☆WARNING!
Why do you add recipes that contain milk with molasses to absorb iron? Calcium blocks the absorption of iron. Many people may get sick or worse die from inaccurate info about iron.

I love BSM. I had 5 tumors and had to have a hysterectomy. My blood count was down to 8. (The normal being 12-15) my doctor told me I almost had to have a blood transfusion after surgery, but she decided to put me on Ferrus sulfate iron pills. I hated that, so at my 2 week check up we quit the iron and went to BSM. I can tell a real difference!!! I also take folic acid b/c that builds your blood too. I went back to work 4 weeks after my surgery. I would advise anyone to take BSM.

Beetroot is one of the vegetables high in oxalates which impairs non-heme iron absorption. Other foods also high in oxalates include spinach, kale, nuts, chocolate, tea, rhubarb, strawberries and herbs such as oregano, basil and parsey. This will suprise many as it goes against the popular perception of these items.

In January I was diagnosed as being severely anemic. My ferritin level was 2. My blood volume was down by 10%. The doctor said I had virtually no iron in my body. I had been taking blackstrap molasses (1 or 2 tablespoons a day) for about a year and unfortunately it did not help me. I knew I needed iron because I was anemic 5 years ago, but it wasn't nearly as bad then as this time.
I did not want to take the prescription after reading all the negative experiences about it. I checked here on Earth Clinic and Dr. Weil's web site and decided to try the remedies that I listed in the title. I hope these brand names are printed because I am not endorsing one in particular, and I did read about at least 2 of them here.
After 2 months, huge success! All my numbers had come up so much that my doctor looked at me with big eyes and asked, "What did you do?" She actually wrote down the names of these products so that she could recommend them to other patients.
Interestingly, in Dr. Weil's article, he recommended Floradix, but said that it probably wouldn't be enough for those with severe anemia. Well, I took it anyway and proved him wrong!
By the way, prior to my first round of bloodwork, I had been taking rather large doses of zinc. I didn't find out until I was reading up on anemia that it blocks iron absorption. I also read that you should avoid milk, eggs, tea, and chocolate. I couldn't give up these items completely, but I reduced the milk and eggs, and I didn't take my iron within a couple of hours of consuming tea or chocolate. I had great results anyway

Yeah! Molasses, molasses, molasses. I have a digestive problem with BSM; have celiac disease and the malt seems to be a real problem. I am also anemic. I have found spinach, peaches, beetroot, cinnamon and chickory all to be helpful. Of course, energy begats energy and exercise (moderate when tired) is great for an energy boost.

Its good I agree to get your blood tested for iron levels, but remember, what is happening at cellular level ie, how much iron reaches its correct destination is not necessarily reflected in the blood test reading!
Pekmezi

It is very weird that no one here has never or so I think- mentioned the traditional grape molasses named pekmezi in Turkish or petimezi in Greek Http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petimezi I guess that it is a local product and not widespread in other places in the world otherwise the page blackstrap molasses would have been a tiny sub page of this grapes molasses pages product.
Pekmezi is made by boiling down slowly for hours the first juice you get after crushing the grapes (the very first step for producing wine before any kind of fermentation) until this juice becomes a mild-thick black-brown sweet syrup. Actually in Greece we can do it in our own kitchen provided we find tons of fresh crushed grape juice. It is a difficult home procedure as we need "gallons" of this fresh juice to produce a bottle of pekmezi. There are a lot of wine producing countries in the world but I don't know if any others than the two above have also this product -well, lazy housewives ? :-)
Even wikipedia doesn't mention pekmezi in its "grapes" page as a grapes product (although there is a petimezi page, mentioned above)
If you just consider the raw material grapes- the grape molasses is far better than any other molasses. There are a lot of "grape" diets but non "sugar cane" ones, and there are a lot of health claims for grapes.
Anyway the grape molasses is so rich in iron too, that you can taste it. One spoon per day is the best home remedy for iron deficiency anemia. In Greece this was a must have remedy for young girls with heavy menstruation, actually not a remedy in a sense of healing the heavy menstruation, but in a sense of rebuilding the body the blood and the stamina. Pregnant women used to take it also. It was a material difficult to produce and every home had bottle as a medicine in its kitchen. I said was because the big pharma came and now the population has been brainwashed to take iron pills for anemia and millions of synthetic vitamins. Also as it is a have it all super food- when a small child was very ill and refused to eat we gave him a spoon of petimezi and we were sure that its body had all the necessary nutrients to combat illness and we didn't mind that the child refused to eat. I remember when I was 7 with chicken pox and 40Celsius for a week and I was saying "I'm dying" my mother gave me pekmezi and water as my sole food. I do not know in other countries what kind of food they feed (before the mass products appear) the very ill children when they refuse to eat but I suppose those exact foods would be the richest in nutrients foods available locally. Check on them in your country!

I was diagnosed with anemia a few months back, I started out taking BSM for 1 month, when I had my iron rechecked I was really optimistic that it would have improved my iron stores but it hadn't. The iron in my blood had gone up from 11 to 19 (normal ranges are 5-30) but my ferritin had dropped even lower from 21 to 18 (normal range 30-150). I swapped to Spatone and my ferratin improved to 26 within 2 weeks.
