I had hip bursitis for three years. It only hurt when lying down... It didn't matter if I lay on my right side or left side, or with a pillow between my legs. Twice I had cortisone injections, with limited and shortlived relief. Twice I took steriod packs which gave me no more than a week of relief. After coming to this site I began a regiment of 2T ACV, 1T blackstrap molassses, 1t modified citrus pectic. In four days the pain was gone. I've continued this daily for ten months and the pain has not come back. Before I started this I also had lower back pain. Often! Lots of Aleve or Excedrin. But, now I seldom ever get the back pain and when I do it's because I overexerted myself. Fortunately, this pain and stiffness also goes away in a day or two.
Note! It hasn't gotten rid of my grey hair, but, so what. I'm pain free.

I am new to the page, just wanted to say thank you so much that it exists, I have been in pain with hip bursitis for several years and can't take advil pain pills etc, and besides all it does is mask the pain, doesn't cure anything. It had gotten so bad that it would actually even wake me from sleep - Now on to the good part - I followed the advice on this page, got the apple cider vinegar, took a couple of table spoons before bed, also drank lots of water with the baking soda and lemon. Was in a lot of pain before I went to bed, but amazingly this morning I have very little bursitis pain (usually I wake up in an extreme amount of pain) although I do still have a lot of muscular pain, (this is the 1st day) I can't believe how quickly this has made a difference.

I was just wondering if you are all still pain free after taking MOM I started taking it yesterday, and woke up this morning without pain.. It did return this afternoon but I have only been taking it for a little over 24 hours.. I am starting to get bursitis in both hips, I am very active and only 45, it has been going on for 4 months and the pain has been unbearable. I have seen two chiropractors and had one cortisone shot.. Nothing has helped. I am just hoping this is the answer to my prayers.. I would love to know if any of you that have been doing the MOM for bursitis in the hip are still pain free..

Just an FYI for your FYI... ACV is definitely an acid. It although has Malic acid in it as well, which is a constructive acid. It does though have an alkaline effect on the body.. Check out it's ash content - alkaline.

I have bursitis in my right hip. I was extremely happy to find easy home remedies for this, although, there were no time lines for using any of these treatments. I would like to know how long to use ACV, MOM, or the potato steeping, do you just do it until you feel better, is there a time line, is it based on the individual??? I hope someone can help with these questions.
Thanks

I have aggressively been strength training and cardio training in order to come back to my pre-marriage weight. I weighed 205 pounds when I got married, and now I weigh 245. I was an athletic male and never had knee pain. The other day I exercised rather vigorously. My knee froze up on me in the middle of the night and I expeirenced extraordinary pain the next morning. I immediately iced to reduce swelling and "up'ed" my supplements.
ONE THING is never the cure - the body functions as a cohesive system, therefore one cure doesn't always work.
- On an empty stomach I took 2 tablespoons of ACV (raw organic) 3 times daily.
- With a meal I took a multivitamin (whole food), vitamin C 1500mg(antioxidant, great for removing healed debris), glucosamine (the entire suggested amount per day, 3 capsules), triple magnesium complex(DV - this is important because magnesium gets depleted rather fast with injury or other healing pains), and finally siberian eleuthero (DV - this allowed me to muscle through the pain so I could keep my mobility)
- soaked in a hot bathtub with epsom salt for 30 minutes, when I got out I stretched all the muscles in my leg, slowly, easily.
- Then I massaged my leg in a way that forced blood to the affected area.
It is
day three now, and I feel fantastic. I still have extreme soreness in the tendons and muscles around my knee, but the sharp, piercing pain is gone.
I suggest to everyone, to use a combination of things that you feel will work for YOUR body.
THIS WEBSITE ROCKS ;)

Sorry left out the result that is if you have more ongoing pain, before trying cortizone injections, use VItB12 injection through your doctor. A friend of mine did just that every few months and has found other health problems improve. He also loves his vegemite now!

I had bursitis in my hip for months. My Gp told me to exercise (walk and swimming). With little effect I saw a naturapath and end result was sugggested to eat vegemite spread on cracker biscuits or grainy bread and winter put 1 heaped tsp stirred in casseroles etc. After a few days my bursitis is pain free and after continual use I find that my arthritis in my right hip has improved heaps. I continue to eat vegemite. I'm swimming training more often in summer these days and find that my arthritis is still there but better.
DMSO
Posted by Travelgirl (Salt Lake City, Utah) on 01/04/2012
I had bursitis in my shoulder and followed this suggestion from Dr. Weil. It took one week of doing dmso and applying ice just as he said and my bursitis was gone. I bought dmso in an aloe vera gel solution at the health food store.
What natural treatments for bursitis does Dr. Weil recommend? Beyond rest to prevent further irritation and allow healing to begin, apply DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), a chemical made from wood pulp that penetrates the skin and promotes healing of pockets of inflammation. Use a 70 percent solution of DMSO and apply it to the affected area with absorbent cotton. Let it dry. Apply the solution three times a day for three days. If you don't see any improvement, stop using it. If you do notice improvement, cut back to twice a day for three more days, then once a day for a final three days. After that, your body can continue healing on its own.
DMSO can cause a sensation of warmth or stinging and may give you an odd, garlic-like taste in the mouth. There's no cause for concern about either of these reactions. DMSO will also dissolve synthetic fibers, so be careful not to get it on clothing or upholstery. You can buy DMSO at most health food stores. Dilute 100 percent or 90 percent solutions down to 70 percent with distilled water. The mixture will get hot; allow it to cool before using.

I'm very interested in the Cayenne & Vaseline preperation mentioned that healed Bursitis in the shoulders. My 18 year old daughter has been suffering with it for about 3 or 4 years. She had to give up competative swimming and violin, both of which she loved. Tried many natural things. Nothing made much of a difference. Please send info on this preparation or any other for Shoulder Bursitis.

I tried the MOM because it was the easiest to obtain. I had immediate relief from hip bursitis from which I had suffered for a year or more. I had tried several things: light exercise and stretching (when I could), corisone shots, naproxan sodium, acetiminophen, rest... The MOM work immedately to relieve pain so I can returned to a better quality of life! Since I didn't need the laxative effect, I have had to cut back to 2 T. once a day, right after work. I am amazed at how well it works! Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this!

My bursitis of the hip was diagnosed in August 2010 along with mild arthritis, a year after the initial spasm on my left hip after a routine run. My 10 hr/day desk job wasn't helping my condition either. The pain would go away while I was on vacation, so stress also plays into my aches.
I changed my job, so that has helped. Nonetheless, the pain has come back. I'm only 30 and don't want to feel like I'm 90. Stretching certainly aleviates the pain, but it still remains which is why I just gulped some Turkish grape vinegar. Wish me luck. Thanks for recommending alternate medicine.

After being hit with my first and hopefully only bout of very painful hip Bursitis I came here for some advice. Tried the Milk of Magnesia 2 TBSP twice a day for 5 days and I was 90% better. In addition, seeing the post stating that when calcium is high magnesium is low and understanding the relationship Vitamin D also has with calcium I added (1) 2000 Unit vitamin D tab to my diet. I did nothing else and felt tremendous relief and was not about to go for Cortisone injections as suggested by others. When my Hip was about 95% better I felt some sharp pain in my knee causing me to limp again. I took another 2 doses of Milk of Magnesia, my knee feels much better, and my hip bursitis is GONE!!! Thank you.

If you don't like the taste of Blackstrap molasses then I really recommend taking it in porridge with milk. My kids, aged 8,6,3,1 all love it and request it. Also, I recommend substituting golden syrup or treacle with BSM if you are doing any baking. I often put a spoonful into whatever I'm baking and it gives a lovely richness to stews and casseroles.

I would like to add to my post after thinking back. I must admit that I was also taking some other things that could've possibly helped my speedy recovery. The 2 that stick out are VCO (vigin coconut oil) and I was also taking OoO (oil of oregano). The oil of oregano was for infection I had in my tooth and the VCO was just because I started OP (oil pulling) with it and really loved the taste.
Perhaps I was getting the full benefits once I started to get the blood flowing to the joint? Just thought I should mention in-case someone wants to give those a try as well.

Bursitis cured with ACV. I am over 50 and had a bad fall, landed on my elbow. It swelled and thought it would go away, it didn't. Three months after I started putting ACV on it, and it remained the same.
Then I soaked a piece of cloth in ACV, kept it on the swell with an elbow support sleeve, almost day & night, and after one day it went down by 15%. I also was careful not to hit it again. On 2nd and 3rd day, down by 75%. That ugly swell has gone and hoping for a complete healing.

This cure worked for me and I hope I can help someone else. The method is called alternating heat/ice therapy. I suffered for 2 weeks with this awful pain in my right shoulder. I was finally told by a friend what it was. I had never even heard of bursitis before. He said he had it once and the dr gave him a shot of cortisone. After doing some research, I was not going to a Dr. for that. But, on the 3rd week, I could not rotate my shoulder enough to get dressed. I tried heat and cold packs. It hurt so much I was taking 800mg ibuprofen 6 times a day. That's every 4hrs. on the dot. It would wake me up at night when I needed another dose.
Finally i read about this alternating heat and cold therapy. Apparently there are a lot of different ways to do it. Basically, you place ice on the affected area for 10min. and then switch to heat for 5min. You keep alternating back and forth for an hour or even longer if you want. The idea is to create a pump within your joint/muscles. Cold pushes blood out and heat pulls it in. Allowing the infection inflmation to be pumped right out of the joint. This made sense to me. So, I got started.
I honestly didn't keep track of time... when it felt like it was aching from too much cold (5-10min.) I would swap to heat until it felt nice and relaxed. Then switch back to cold. Important thing to remember: always end with cold. You want to remove the inflamation at the end. I used ice packs wrapped in towels and an electric heating pad. I would do this for up to 2hrs a night watching tv or reading before bed. Every morning it felt better... so, I kept doing it. After 4-5days, my shoulder was almost completely healed. I had some minor pain when over extending the range of motion. Like reaching high above my head (eg. reaching for a dish on the top shelf). But, within a few days that was gone. I suffered miserably for 3 weeks... and in only a few days this relieved it. I'm sure it would've only taken 1 or 2 treatements to cure this if I started sooner. Anyway, It's been about a month, and no pain still.
Can you imagine how powerful this technique would be with the right herbal remedies? Combining this with a natural antibiotic/anti-inflamatory would be great. Unfortunately, I had no idea what to take so heat/ice was all i used.

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil for bursitis, joint pain.
I'm 36 yrs old and for 3 yrs I have bursitis on the should area and pain in my wrist. I decided after reading on earthclinic to give VCO a try. In one week I noticed the pain went away and I have more energy. It really really WORKS!
I take a 1 Tablespoon/day. Put in coffee, spread it on toast instead of butter, put some in my soup, add to my pasta sauce. I love the smell. I even use it as a cold cream to clean my face at night. I even give VCO to my dogs and cats and their coats are shiny and soft! I will continue to take this the rest of my life. I love VCO! Thank you earthclinic.

DMSO
Posted by Alice (Tucson, Arizona) on 08/08/2009
Update on DMSO use: I continued spraying DMSO once a day on the affected areas and the muscles began more and more to stop bunching up in painful lumps, range of motion began to largely increase..a lot... and pain in general began to disappear. However, it seems there were still areas that would suddenly attack with horrible pain should I move my arm in the wrong position.
BUT those places seemed to be getting less and less, the muscles were returning to a more normal feeling when I move my hand over them, and the range of motion definitely was increasing.
Yesterday I missed spraying the DMSO. I had wondered if perhaps the problem was resolving itself naturally and I only thought the DMSO was helping. This morning the problem has definitely worsened, so apparently the DMSO was helping to resolve it. I am going to resume using DMSO until the problem goes away. I may try other things, like the milk of magnesia, because this problem is not the result of a DMSO deficiency, but for now I will use the DMSO, plus the apple cider vinegar, and lemon soda.
I really appreciate this site. While my experience is probably different than someone else's, it helps to see what results other people get, so I can make intelligent decisions regarding taking care of me. Even though I still go to the doctor, here I am having gone but for results I find I must do my own research along with seeing doctors. It gets me that I am forced to spend a lot oof money monthly for "insurance" and then, after paying that and going to see the doctor, I go here and other places to find out what really works, carefully try it, and so cure myself. I spend zero a month here. Hmmmmm......
This is not to insult my doctor. He actually listens. He also discovered that giving up processed foods helped him lose weight and get off blood pressure medications, and he had wanted me to use the machines for breathing to bring down blood pressure. I had wanted to use them before he suggested it, but never could afford them, so this site then connected me to the place that sells the exercises without the machines, which worked for me and others I got it for.
So this is a great site. As adults we need and have a right to discuss our experiences, so thanks for being here.

Bursitis? Muscle/joint pain, swelling massage helps
I have severe pain in my right arm. It began in the middle of the arm, feeling as if it was where the muscle or ligament attaches to the arm. It felt as if suddenly that was torn. The pain also appeared in the shoulder joint. It appeared suddenly, without any apparent reason. Pressure on the spot seemed to help. Also using therapies such as gentle touch.
However it began to spread. It felt as if different muscle areas would bunch up and become hard and painful. The pain would occur if moving the arm in one specific way or another, frequently associated with twisting the arm. For example, I could not reach behind my back to pull up my pants.
I discovered if I deeply massage the hardened area, it relieves the pain. It feels as if there might be fluid in the cells or the area which somehow gets massaged out, and then the muscle cells relax and pain goes away...at least for a while. Flexibility is then restored, at least for a while. It does not feel exactly like a cramp, though I suppose that is possible. However, it seems to me that the relaxed muscle or ligament or whatever areas then begin to atrophy, although I don't know if that is due to probable less use.
Range of motion is limited: I cannot raise that arm straight up in the air. I have been to the doctor, who sent me for xrays to see if the ligament is lifting from the bones. But I don't think it's just ligaments, because of the hardened areas that are larger sections of muscle tissue, and because deep massage to the painful portion removes the hardness and restores flexibility. If I slide the fingers of my left hand over the affected area of my upper right arm, I can feel the muscles lumped up and hard. Again, though: massage removes the hardness and restores flexibility. The pain is definitely associated with the hardened muscle or ligament or attachment.
However, the pain is sudden and excrutiating when moving in a suddenly "wrong" direction.
Also the problem is spreading, though still confined to the right arm. Plus I can feel the ligaments or whatever getting caught on the bone at the shoulder joint.
When this began to be an obvious problem, drinking 2 teaspoons of soda in juice of four lemons, allowed to foam, then added to 20 ounces of water, seemed to be helping. It actually tasted good. I drank it once a day. I stopped because the price of lemons skyrocketed and while it seemed to temporarily help and maybe be actually getting better, it seemed maybe I needed to take even more. Or that it wasn't really curing it, just slowing it down. Also I was about to have to go to the doctor, so I became discouraged and stopped the remedy.
The range of motion is greatly improved over what it was, mostly seeming as a result of deep massage. However, the problem is spreading to more of the arm. Also I've noticed that if I relax my arm at my side while sleeping on my back, there will be a painful accumulation of fluid in places like immediately next to the outside of the bone in the elbow joint. This pain can be removed by deeply and carefully massaging the affected area, which seems to remove the fluid along with the pain, and then movement is no longer painful, and so flexibility is restored to wherever the pain was.
It's difficult to research this because I have no idea what it really is, though bursitis sounded like a possibility. I am going to try the lemon/soda "cure" again, using even more lemons and soda, to see if that helps. If not, I am going to try some of the remedies for bursitis listed here.
If anyone has had a similar problem, or has ideas as to what might be causing this or what might help it, I'd be interested in hearing. Thanks

A few year ago I was diagnosed with calcific bursitis (13mm) on my shoulder. Of course you must check your trace elements and try to rebalance them (that is the key for all health issues). Apart from this, what I did that made it disappear in one year's time was:
1. accupuncture 2. chinese phytotherapy (plant extracts under the name of Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang) and 3. chiropractor sessions to straighten my back and shoulder massages (rather painful actually, but a few seconds per session is a small price to pay for the benefits).

Hi, I too have discovered the health benefits of ACV( Organic's ACV - which you can find at most supermarkets). I take it for joint pain, and if I have an acid stomach- or feel bloated--yes, acid on acid nutrilizes. Also, to get to sleep I drink a cup about a 1/2 before bed and read a good book. I don't think you need to have the honey, unless you want it sweet or for a sore throat,or chest congestion- add lemon juice and honey. I take 2 TBSPS in in 8 to 12 oz of hot water and sip slowly-for best results. God Bless

Milk of magnesium cured my bursitis, I had suffered from it for many years, sometimes I saw a Doctor 6 times a year, he told me that I had migratory bursitis, one time I went to the hospital for bursitis on my shoulder, luckily after 3 days the calcium dissolved, my italian neighbor told me that she can't believe I would go to so much trouble knowing that I can get relief taking milk of magnesium.
I used it and within 24 hours I was cured 90%. this was about 20 years ago and it has work for me and my friends, usually when I have bursitis immediately I take a tablespoon of milk of magnesium (I don't care that it will upset my stomach) and 1 teaspoon before I go to bed then for the next 3 days I take on teaspoon in the morning and another before I go to bed, after that I am 100% cured, this year I had to take it 3 times and always works, the only time that I have to go and see a Dr. was when I had the bursitis in my hips (2 times) mybe if I had waited long enough would had work but after a week of pain I had no choice.
One time I was on vacation and I had a bad sunburn since I only had milk of magnesium I used on my back and I was able to sleep.
Your web site is wonderful, I am addicted to it. For the last 3 months I had been doing the oil pulling and ACV, thanks to everybody for their feedback.
