Gin and molasses was a remedy given to both man and animal. The origin of this PULMONARY SYRUP came from the Dutch known as Molasses Spirits.

Molasses Spirits was a popular remedy for upper respiratory infections. How it worked;

Gin – Gin contains alcohol which is a disinfectant. Juniper berries are anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory.

Molasses (Blackstrap Molasses) – Blackstrap molasses is rich in a variety of essential minerals including iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium and potassium as well as the majority of the vitamin B complex. Molasses also contains high concentrations of amino acids and linoleic acid, an essential lipid.

From the Book, The Maryland Farmer, printed in 1864 list this remedy to be given to horses for Inflammation of the Bowels. It states: medicines administered for this disease, such as whisky, gin and molasses, salts, castor oil, gunpowder, and etc –

From the Book, The Writings of Mark Twain Vol XIX, published in 1901. Curing a Cold. He writes; My case grew more serious everyday. Plain gin was recommeded; Then gin and molasses; I took it.

Molasses and gin for excessive mucous

I came across a reference to these two ingredients as a cure for catarrh. (from the late 1800's). Ever heard of this?
