Glutamic and Aspartic Acid
Posted by Angella (Jamaica, West Indies) on 09/22/2015

My daughter who is now 22 years had her first seizure at 17. At the time she was diagnosed with a panic attack, especially because it was the night before a Major exam in Physics. She later went on to college, and 2 years later was diagnosed with epilepsy and placed on Epilim. She was non compliant as so one night I was called from a gym where he had another attack, hence the conclusion. This was in 2012. My observation however is that she seem to only get an attack whenever she ovulates and sometimes when she becomes upset or anxious. She seem pretty fine otherwise but the situation stresses me as I am afraid that this may occur when there is no one there to assist her.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm pretty sure it would've been Equate, the store brand. I also order from Swanson's Vitamins, their brand. Lately I have been getting their chewable zinc/echinacea/vit. C tablets, which he enjoys.

My father has a had severe night time seizures (not often) for a few years now that have become more frequent lately, we have gone to a neurologists and he is now on anti seizure medicine, Keppra - which he has had a severe reaction to including depression, suicidal thoughts and behavioral changes- needless to say they are changing his medication - now to Valproic Acid which we are concerned about as well. We would love to go with a natural remedy and get him off of all of these horrible medications. He is now also on Xanax which is making him act a little nuts, just trying to control his mood while weaning him off Keppra. This behavior is way out of the ordinary for him, he is normally a happy, smart, strong hard working man. He is now emotional, and miserable. I have read some amazing stuff about epsom salts and other remedies but there is a lot to narrow down in a hurry.

We are looking for a list and amounts of "must haves" for seizure treatment, in hopes of getting him off of all this horrible stuff quickly and as easily as possible. He has been on these anti-seizure meds for such a short period of time we hope to transition off of the quickly if possible. Right now he says he would rather live with seizures and forget the medications. Oh just FYI, he is a welder and has been exposed to heavy metals like manganese since the age of 13. Thanks for your help and information.

You need to find someone experience enough to help you detox your dad. There are many things today that can cause individuals to have seizures. Besides detox, diet and proper hydration with no doubt improve your dads situation. I know from personal experience. If you can't find anyone to help you in your area, Please send me an email an I maybe be able to point you in the right direction. Steve

Fluorescent Light Connection
Posted by Jen (Los Angeles, Ca) on 08/14/2009

I use to work in a grocery store and we had a few people have seizures in the store. The fluorescent lights can induce a Seizure.

I now work in the field of sleep disorders and use to do EEG (brain studies to rule out (R/O) Seizure disorder and other anomalies) studies and we would have the patients come in sleep deprived and flash lights at varying speeds to try and induce/produce some type of epileptiform (AKA a Seizure) activity.

People with Epilepsy have to have a year seizure free before they can drive. My husband went just over a year without a seizure, he then had one as he was about to do his theory and hasn't been able to drive since as he is having frequent seizures. I don't think Epileptics are banned from driving, they are just have to be under control for a certain length of time before considering it.

It's not legally banned everywhere. Im in Canada and epileptic and after 19 yrs of uncontrolled seizures I was able to get my drivers license from being seizure free completely for 6 months. I went vegan and all my seizures stopped. After 19yrs of "drug resistant epilepsy" I'm still on pills put finally can drive.

We started the gluten / casien free diet about a month and a half ag. I have noticed that my 4yr lod daughter's constipation has all but gone. We have started seeing a natruropathic dr. found that she had fungal yeast overgrowth in both the large and small intestines, mercury, and vaccines in her body. Since seeing the new dr. she has started getting some of her words back and being alot more affectionate towards everybody especially her older sister of 5yrs. old. Not to say it is a cure but GOD has opened doors for me and after 4yrs. of battlling seizure after seizure, and now autism, I think our tunnel is getting brighter.

Ketogenic diet stops epileptic seizure in a significant percentage of children. Read below.

I believe this excerpt from Thomas Levy's book deserves an additional cure for ketogenic diet. The book is called "Curing the Incurable" 3rd edition, ebook page 316 of 7745.

In one of the more recent references in the April, 2000 issue of Pediatrics eleven studies on the ketogenic diet were reviewed. The authors concluded that the ketogenic diet completely stopped medically unresponsive seizures in a significant percentage of children. The diet also reduced seizure frequency by over 90% in an even greater percentage of children! Similar articles were found in the various neurology and epilepsy journals. Sadly, it would seem that many pediatricians and pediatric neurologists do not know what is in the most current issues of their primary and specialty journals.

How much Epsom salt should be added to the bath? My son has had seizures since he was 12 or 13, we have only tried medication (Tegretol) and at one point he would be seizure free for close to a year he is now 24 and they are more frequent, maybe 3 times a month, I'm going to try most of what I've read from others on this site. Can't be any worse than what we are already experiencing.

Magnesium
Posted by Me (Somewhere, In The Usa) on 07/17/2012

UPDATE: Thank you for all your replies. I have tried the chiropractor a while back but it did not help me. And the ketogenic diet requires consumption of heavy cream on a daily basis and lots of oily and fat foods which I dislike immensely so I am really hoping to find a vitamin or mineral that will provide relief for me.

On the third day I did not take any epsom salts and slept well and woke up feeling normal with no tingling or numbness feelings. In the morning of the 4th day I decided to try 1/2 teaspoon epsom salts again and several hours later I again started experiencing tingling, numbness in face and brain fog. I wish I can find out why this is. Will try a different form of magnesium now and some coconut oil.

HI U ANGELLA, , , , , , , , been down that black out trail from age 30 to about age 45. Went to all the biggies, Temple White, UBA, Mayo's and others. All said I was hyperventilating and I knew better. But I now think they were right and I was wrong. You can hyperventilate without deep breathing.

Stress will cause you to breath shallow and fast and not have time for your CO2 to build up. A Little Rock doctor put me on Dilantion, which is for epileptics and that drug wasted my bones away and now I have osteoporosis. I finally grew out of that condition and no longer have the black out problem, but I now have problems from the drugs that were prescribed for me.

If your daughter is a hard charger, then that may be her problem. Let me suggest that she learn how to breath. Babies know how to breath. Adults don't . I would go down lots of trails before I got on the Big Pharma Road. You will cut off your nose to spite your face. Take her to Dr Shallenberger or Dr Robert Rowen .

These drugs will haunt her until life's end.

A Dr. diagnoised my 17 yr old grand-daughter with epilepsy. I'm am not convinced of his diagnosis. She had a one time passing out and no seziure activity was present. She went to the ER and all they found was she was dehydrated. Her brain scan was normal and her MRI was normal. The EEG she had was slightly abnormal. The 72 hour EEG she had had some peaks and a small amount of high electrial activy? areas. She has a headache occ. and does not sleep regulary or eat properly. She is under alot of stress and has anxiety attacks occ. But she is your active average teenager in her senoir year of school and makes very good grades. They want to put her on Lamictal but I'm not convinced that she has epilepsy and the med has way to many side effects. The Dr. said if she took the med for 5 yrs and did not have a seizuer she could come off it. My other concern is what damage will it do to her body in 5 years. Having trouble getting a second opinion. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Not sure why you're having trouble getting a second opinion, but that's the route I would go for starters (and for certain). Definitely a second opinion.

A "slightly abnormal EEG" can be caused by many things, including things as benign as a migraine, drug/alcohol use and attention problems.

I have a daughter the same age as yours and I would absolutely get a second opinion no matter how many hoops I had to jump through to get it.

Flowerlady, sorry to hear about your daughter.

Here is an article from Dr. A. Hoffer on using Niacin to stop anxiety. It is vitamin B3 totally safe.

If you are worried that she "may" have a seizure then Magenesium would alleviate that.

Please read both articles but the 2nd one states that Magnesium deficiency can lead to seizures. You would need to have her "Magnesium Blood Levels checked". Anyway read the article. There is a lot of info on the below site.

Hope these help. Cheers

I was an epileptic for 41 years..... Started petite mal and went soon into grand mal..... Doctors said idiopathic.... No known cause. EEG 's were normal. Had to take 4 tegretols per day. I found out that more than half of all seizures are caused by a hit on the head.. Doesn't have to be significant. Years later seizures begin due to scar tissue which has formed. I did a test with an affiliate using Brain State Technology.... Called a brain map. It was the best EEG I ever had.... It not only said I had high seizure activity but where the activity was located. After 20 sessions I felt my brain waves to be different and asked for another Brain Map. Sure enough it had corrected the neurons sufficiently for me to use GABA amino acid (makes neurons fire regularly) and get off the meds within two weeks. It has been two years and no hint of a seizure. It also corrected PST which is inner anxiety and brain injury from a car accident... Whiplashed badly.

With your daughter I would begin here. You can't lose with this treatment as it improves your life in many ways. If you have to take meds while doing it make sure they are on the low level when doing the sessions.. Just before you have to take them again or you may be wasting your money or it will take longer as some medicines block the effect...

Question for Steve... I live in San Antonio and I have a 3 yr old who's been on epileptic medicine for 2 yrs. He's been through 4 surgeries and is not seizure free. We're trying to find the right medicine and right dosage for him. I hate the way the medicines make him feel. I've been wanting to treat him the holistic way but I'm not sure how to or what to give him?? If you can refer a holistic doctor to me I would greatly appreciate it. He has simple complex seizures, he also had a tumor removed (which we though was causing them), but he's still having seizures.

Veronica, it would be a good idea if you read Linus Pauling's book "How to live longer and feel better". I could tell you what he says but it is maybe better to get the whole picture. He talks about children who had seizures and how they were treated with vitamins and minerals. A very interesting book by one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. When I finish I will post a review here. I hope this will help your son without the side effects.

WARNING!

EPILEPSY IS SERIOUS STUFF

I TURNED IN MY DRIVERS LICENSE AFTER A FATAL ACCIDENT WAS REPORTED IN THE LOCAL NEWS PAPER AND THEN THE LIGHT BULB ON MY HEAD WENT ON BRIGHT. As an epileptic since I was 8 yrs old and taking the dreaded dialantin sodium & phenobarbital has kept me sane and grand mal seizure free. One doctor took all my prescribed meds for 2 weeks-he wanted to see what would happen-well i had a grand mal seizure while on my stationary bike, fell off, bit my tongue and had a severe headach for days and stayed home from work just to get my body back to where it was prior to obeying this Dr. If I could find something but after 70 years I will stick to my apple cider vinegar in V8 or water while it still not hurting but helping my arthritis and osteoporosis. Annnd shiny hair too.

Please stick to your meds until you are truly sure and that your examiner thinks you can go ahead with alternatives. It physically hurts badly to not use the safety first method. I pray for all us epileptics especially the kids. While I was a kid I had to fight the kids for all their ugly remarks that made me cry in anger and then I began to fight them back because this is not my fault. You are all in my prayers.

Cysticercosis
Posted by Frank (NY, NY) on 08/22/2009

Interesting causes of seizures on this thread. Another condition that can cause seizures is cysticercosis, an infection from ingestion of tapeworm larvae.

From the CDC website:

"Neurocysticercosis (cysticerci in the brain, spinal cord):

Symptoms of neurocysticercosis depend upon where and how many cysticerci (often called lesions) are found in the brain. Seizures, and headaches are the most common symptoms. However, confusion, lack of attention to people and surroundings, difficulty with balance, swelling of the brain (called hydrocephalus) may also occur. Death can occur suddenly with heavy infections.

WARNING!

I have used natural health remedies for a long time. I have not used a lot that I have seen here on this site and will love to try them.

What someone tries for a natural health remedy that effects only them and their body is their own business.

There are certain conditions, such as seizures, diabetes, or anything that can effect your concious state of mind, that everyone needs to be very careful about.

When a person with seizures goes off meds, they open themselves up to having massive seizures. Brian injuries can not be cured overnight.

My son and I were almost killed by someone who had simply reduced their seizure medication. That choice was not fair to us, or anyone else who may have been hurt.

We had a car accident. It only effected three people in the car, myself, my son and my husband who had the seizure. He has gone often for months and weeks without a seizure with low or no medication. Eventually it is going to happen again.

With his medication at full theraputic levels it never happens.

This highway accident could have resulted in dozens of people hurt or dead. So please I beg you, as I sit here with broken bones and torn muscles, do not stop taking seizure medications and drive or do anything dangerous if you were to have a seizure. It is grossly irresponsible to everyone else in society. That is not a natural way to be.

My journey into nutrition started in the 70's with Adelle Davis' books. She recommended magnesium (epsom salts) for Epilepsy. I have told this to various people over the years and offered them the books to read, amazingly they didn't want to do the research, preferring the allopathic methods of treatment. Ms Davis was also a strong proponent of folic acid to prevent spina biffida! This has only recently been taken seriously..but her evidence could have saved much untold misery for unfortunate families during these intervening years.

In one of her books Ms Davis referred to another nutritionist from the 40's who opined that unless magnesium levels in the diet were improved, within a generation we would't be able to tell from the backview the difference between boys and girls!!! Well girls used to have waists (18" to 22") and boys always had physiques, maybe lack of magnesium affects the hormones somehow.

I have been taking Taurine (500mg), Tyrosine(500mg), and B-50 complex. This has helped me control my seizures. I take The Taurine once in the morning. I take the Tyrosine 3 times a day, and B-Complex 2 to 3 times a day. If I take it 3 times a day, it sometimes keeps me up at night because it raises my energy levels up; instead, I take it 3 times a day only for more control or energy. I'm taking medicine still but at a minimal level because of these additional items I'm taking. Accupuncture helped me as well. I went from the full dosage of regular meds. to half the amount. The accupuncture takes some time though, but is worth it in the end.(The type of acupuncture I used was the approach treating the whole body - not just the ears for example.)

Posted by Binah (Dublin) on 10/11/2012

I take Taurine as well, I take 3000mg twice daily though, along with Vitamin B complex 50mg twice, I take them together as Taurine uses Vitamin B6 to carry out its functions. I started taking it last year and have managed to reduce my keppra dose from 2750mg to 750mg per day and I am determined to get off it because the side effects of it are horrendous, I do get fairly good control with keppra but would rather look for natural ways to control seizures. One thing that keppra did to me was it caused arythmia and the Taurine has also stopped this and this is a great relief to me. I'm still on Tegretol Retard unfortunately but am considering reducing that too in the future. Taurine is an amazing anti-convulsant imo and I'm so grateful because I was suicidal and exhausted and losing my hair and angry on keppra, I couldn't concentrate, follow a film or read a book, and books were my refuge.

I take spirulina too since last May which has helped with insomnia and energy levels and complex migraines and the nerve damage in my hands that was becoming a problem for me, its full of B vitamins and neuroprotectant amino acids.

There is new research out since last month on Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's) these can be bought in the health shop, they contain Leucine Isoleucine and Valine, the research was done on a small number of people who had Autism with Epilepsy and they found between 7-10 grams in powder form given over the day in about four doses had dramatic effects on both conditions. They specify that the work was only carried out on people with Autism who had a genetic co-morbid epilepsy but I think it is reasonable to wonder if this may work too for the general epilepsy population.

I'm starting hopefully this week to start drinking ionised water, about 8 pints a day, a friend of mine has done this for his daughter and he says it reduced her seizures by 50%. It is used for many illnesses and in hospitals in Japan for its anti-oxidant effect. The machines can be expensive but I made my own for a small fraction of the price. There are a few good clear videos on how to make one on youtube.

Never give up hope, there are lots of options out there to try, blessings everyone x

@ Maureen- I used to drink a LOT of sodas, but I never had a seizure from them. But my naturopathic doctor has told me that he would rather I had regular sugar than any sugar substitutes.

@ London- As I was telling Maureen, I used to drink a LOT of sodas. Since seeing this naturopathic doctor, I have not had any, with only a little lemonade or anything else but water. I would hardly drink water before, now I am either drinking it, natural juices, or milk (milk isn't considered a food according to my diet so I can drink it to my heart's content). Anyway, the doctor told me that reverse osmosis or distilled water was best (usually this is the kind without any bad taste). You can add lemon or lime to it if you need flavor (from a real lemon or lime, not the concentrates you can get at the store). Another thing I was told but haven't tried yet is baking soda - adding a teaspoon of baking soda to a gallon of water will ph balance the water and give more benefits.

I am drinking more water, on a harmonious food diet (more oganic food to cut MSG and other excitotoxins found in processed foods, not eating protiens and starches together) and I feel a heck of a lot better than I did before - more energy and less headaches are just a few of the benefits, and now, I don't even miss the sodas.

What is aspartame?

Gluten and Casein Free Diet
Posted by Sharon (Rio Rancho, New Mexico) on 09/07/2011

Jim,

I'm not sure about a regular doctor who does this, but I go to Lifetime Chiropractic in Rio Rancho, NM and for $25 you (or in this case, your daughter) can do a foot soak that will pull the metals out of her body. After that, they give you a tablet to take that replaces the good ones that got drawn out as well.

I am also on a harmonious foods diet. This means that I buy mostly organic foods so not to get the chemicals from the processed foods, and that I don't mix starches and protiens. The diet is based on digestion. It might be something you want to consider. You can find the food chart at www.drugfreehelp.com.
