Hi Vern,

You didn't mention your grandson's age and that would have been useful to know, but the following should be helpful.

Febrile seizures are often caused by an infection which causes the body to generate a fever to fight the infection. The resulting fever can cause the seizure as discussed in the following brief, but informative and worth reading article for his parents from the Mayo Clinic :

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/febrile-seizure/symptoms-causes/syc-20372522

If this is a recurring occurrence, they might ask his doctor to check his vitamin D level as a low vitamin D level may be contributing to the underlying infections which are causing the fever as vitamin D produces proteins that fight viral and bacterial pathogens. Zinc can also be useful to help support "normal immune function" and his doctor can recommend an appropriate dose for your grandson if his level is low.

The following article link explains the role of zinc in fighting infection and further explains that people with too low of a zinc level have little to no T-cells to fight infections :

https://www.fredhutch.org/en/news/center-news/2022/03/dudakov-zinc-thymus-regeneration.html#:~:text=There's a long history linking, non-existent, Iovino said.

Here is a very relevant and very important quote from the article :

' There's a long history linking zinc with optimal immune function. For example, it's known that people whose zinc levels are too low have little to no infection-fighting T cells and the thymus, the organ in which T cells develop, is nearly non-existent, Iovino said. When zinc-deficient people are given extra zinc, their thymuses grow and start pumping out these immune cells.'

The following study suggests that children who have febrile seizures also have low zinc levels. While this does not establish cause and effect, it is already known that zinc promotes proper immune function which is very important for your grandson in fighting infections that can cause fevers which can cause the febrile seizures. A proper functioning immune system may prevent the infections from getting started in the first place, stop them earlier or prevent a high fever from occurring. Do you see the relationship? :

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7595794/

Here is a relevant quote from the link :

' Children with febrile seizures had significantly reduced concentrations of zinc in the serum. '

Magnesium is another important supplement when it comes to febrile seizures as discussed in the following link :

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9826744/#:~:text=A significant negative correlation was, 0.169], p < 0.05.

Here is a very relevant and important quote from the research paper :

' Serum magnesium was significantly low in febrile children with seizures compared to those without, and hypomagnesemia was associated with the occurrence of febrile seizures. These results portray hypomagnesemia as a possible risk factor for febrile seizure, and so should be validated in future large cohort studies so that guidelines are set for proper management of these children.'

I want to leave you with this final and what I consider a proactive study, that reaches the conclusion that, ' Elevated levels of selenium, zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 in the blood of children with fevers help to prevent febrile seizures.'

https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9067/10/3/528#:~:text=Conclusions: Elevated levels of selenium, help to prevent febrile seizures.

Can you see why I refer to the above study as " a proactive study"? They are showing a supplement combination that actually helps prevent the seizures in children who already have fevers. Add the other supplements mentioned further above and you could be looking at a viable treatment plan for febrile seizures in children administered under the care of a doctor.

His doctor can and should test all of these levels I mentioned above in your grandson and then have him supplement them appropriately if they are not replete.

Please keep us updated on your grandson's progress.
