WARNING!

BPA is disrupts hormones and has been linked to cancer and infertility. From the paper receipts you get from stores to paper money, the BPA can easily transfer through the skin. Usually we worry about BPA in plastic baby or water bottles and canned food linings. "receipts

What's the charge? Some but not all cash-register and credit-card receipts can be rich sources of exposure to BPA, a hormone-mimicking pollutant. Christopher Baker while working at Polaroid Corp. For more than a decade, John C. Warner learned about the chemistry behind some carbonless copy papers (now used for most credit card receipts) and the thermal imaging papers that are spit out by most modern cash registers. Both relied on bisphenol-A. Manufacturers would coat a powdery layer of this BPA onto one side of a piece of paper together with an invisible ink, he says. "Later, when you applied pressure or heat, they would merge together and you'd get color. "

At the time, back in the '90s, he thought little about the technology other than it was clever. But when BPA exploded into the news, about a decade ago, Warner began to develop some doubts. Research was demonstrating that this estrogen-mimicking chemical was leaching out of polycarbonate plastics, out of the resins used to line most food cans and out of dental sealants. In the womb, this chemical could disrupt the normal development of a rodent's gonads — or evoke changes that predisposed animals to later develop cancer. Warner recalls that these reports piqued his curiosity about whether the color-changing papers that were increasingly proliferating throughout urban commerce still used BPA. By this time, the organic chemist was teaching green chemistry at the University of Massachusetts. "So I'd send my students out to local stores to get their cash register receipts. " Back in the lab, they'd dissolve the paper, run it through a mass spectrometer and look for a telltale spike in the readout that signaled the presence of BPA. And they'd find it, Warner says. Not in every receipt. But in plenty. And the paper used in the receipts that contained BPA looked no different than papers that didn't. But that was then, before he co-founded the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry, an organization that works with industry to develop safer products and production processes. So earlier this week I asked Warner whether he had evidence BPA might still be present in those papers. Yep. He turned up BPA-based receipts in use the last time he looked. Which was last month. And the amount receipts carry isn't trivial. "When people talk about polycarbonate bottles, they talk about nanogram quantities of BPA [leaching out, " Warner observes. "The average cash register receipt that's out there and uses the BPA technology will have 60 to 100 milligrams of free BPA. " By free, he explains, it's not bound into a polymer, like the BPA in polycarbonates. It's just the individual molecules loose and ready for uptake. "... "At least pregnant women would know to wash their hands after picking up a BPA-laced receipt. And we'd all know to keep such paper out of hands of kids. We might also want to store those receipts in some zip-it-closed plastic baggie, not our wallets. " -- By Janet Raloff

Say no to fertility treatments because as you can see that is causing the unending bleeding! The fertility treatments are hormones that are making your body more out of balance. The infertility issues stem from too much environmental estrogens from food and toxic chemicals we put on our bodies and use at home. Learn about them and go organic and use unsulphured blackstrap molasses and kelp and unrefined coconut oil to add progesterone to your body to balance all the extra estrogen.

Also go organic too get rid of the environmental estrogens in the food you eat and ALKALIZE YOUR BODY! Your body cannot get pregnant and we cannot sustain a pregnancy without progesterone... Google estrogenic substances/compounds and switch to NATURAL products with ONE INGREDIENT and no chemicals and detoxify your liver to better handle them with milk thistle!

Unrefined coconut oil... Kelp... And unsulphured blackstrap molasses. Build up to three tablespoons of each a day. She also should include vitamin c and echinacea to rebuild the immune system. Milk thistle to detox the liver. Probiotics preferably homemade kefir to rebuild the good bacteria in the body!

Hi--
I need something to try for Cushing's. My friend has the moonface, the weight gain, the purple scarring, and the long stretch marks, and maybe a few other symptoms of Cushing's. What can we try? Or where can we look for answers?

Detoxification

I'm suffering from an extreme imbalance and I can tell you that detoxing your body can help balance out the hormones. The problem is that certain chemicals and foods act just like estrogen in the body causing an imbalance, too much estrogen, not enough progesterone. The liver becomes congested resulting in the estrogens/toxins recirculating instead of being eliminated in the waste. This includes toxins rubbed on the skin, eaten in the food, etc. and you have to clean up the liver to be able for the liver to excrete them. I started with 1/2 lemon twice a day, first thing in the morning and before bed. You also need to do other detox methods, including cleaning up your diet. You also need to add good bacteria to your body so that it can function better.

If you are having a hormonal imbalance, that includes eliminating meats that contain hormones because those are making it worse! Purchase organic or eat more vegan meals. You can find many cheap liver cleansing methods that just require stuff from the grocery store!

By the way, hormone therapy is just a bandaid approach, it does work for some, but eliminating the toxic burden on the liver is the best method. Hormone therapy only ADDS TO the toxic burden on the liver.

Maca Root

Greetings - my first post but I have been an avid fan of this site for a while :-) For hormone balancing, Maca (root) is a phenomenal way to go - I use the powder form in water (tastes meh - slightly nutty) but it's available also in liquid drops. I am perimenopausal and I was shocked that it stopped night sweats in its tracks! I had been dealing with that for a couple years, so it was amazing to not have to kick the covers off halfway through the night any more. YAY! It is better than progesterone to balance estrogen since it is a food and gentler in its approach. I am a fan!

In regards to Ambrosia's question about balancing hormones without birth control, here is what has helped me a great deal (taken on a daily basis):

- (Super) Greens (powdered - combination of barley, kelp, etc. - between 1-2 tablespoons in water, depending on how tired I am)
- Magnesium (powdered, flavored-in about 8 oz. water) (about 300mg., though I occasionally take a little more if I am really tired)
- Fish Oil (1 gel cap)
- Probiotics (2 pills)
- Super B Complex pills (B vitamins that includes folic acid, etc. - 2 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon.)
- Minerals (multiple trace minerals - 2 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon)

With the above, I don't have the mood swings and I do have more energy. In fact, if I don't take the Super Greens and Magnesium, it's evident because the mood swings start again. Before starting on these, I would start crying anytime and not even know why. And I was sooooo tired - I really was not functioning well at all. I do suggest taking the Magnesium and Super Greens at least 1 hour apart. Otherwise you may have an upset stomach for a little while. Hope this helps!

Progesterone

Women need to know that PROGESTERONE does not cause cancer. Synthetic forms of progesterone such as progestin and provera and synthetic, unopposed or too much estrogen in the body can facilitate cancer growth.

Also, we have to be willing to make the dietary changes and move more. Most women would need NO hormones or medication whatsoever, if we would change our eating habits and take the supplements recommended.

This is what I finally decided to do and it is paying off. You need to be prepared for the fact that it can take years to restore your body. After all it took decades to get where we are!

Thanks to Earth Clinic for the natural remedies. I have had much better results with healing my body than with conventional medicine and drugs.

HORMONES: I wanted to share with ALL the women out there about my journey to hormonal happiness. Hormones are such a basic building block of our health.

Somehow I came across the book, What Your Dr. Might Not Tell You about Premenopause. (Got a used copy on Amazon.) WOW, it was fascinating and changed my life. The premise of this book is balancing your hormones and how most of the time it can be achieved with NATURAL Progesterone cream, not synthetic hormones.

My biggest help came with clearing my sinuses. I almost could not breathe through my nose and never knew hormones could affect this. Many things on Earth Clinic's site helped me, but the progesterone finished it off. Within 1 month, I could breathe again. There have been many other benefits as well.

EVERY women needs to read this book -- even those in their 20s. It will help you understand what is happening in your body with your hormones.

Magnesium

A long time ago I read about a natural cure for hormonal mood swings, (PMS symptoms) and I read that if you have the type of PMS where you are cranky it works to take a Calcium/Magnesium supplement but the Magnesium amount has to be more than Calcium. There's a popular supplement available that has twice the magnesum to calcium ratio. It works so well that even my husband makes sure I always have it on hand/I take it ten days before, 3 times a day. As I get older I've started taking Vitex, and for some reason the (awful tasting) liquid works better than the capsules for me, and that has made a huge difference. I will say that I am now looking into supplements as I head into perimenopause, I am feeling very unhappy a lot of days which is very unlike me. In doing a lot more research (from books) I have been reading great things about Black Cohosh and am about to start taking that. No synthetic drugs for me, just natural cures and I would love to hear how other women have handled the depression (mild, but that's enough) and lethargy that I really want to get some help with. Hope I was able to help someone else!

Vitamin E

I was very curious to see vitamin E listed as a remedy on your anti-aging page. I feel very strongly that vitamin e is essential for women as they age. I know it helps me with hormonal fluctations and I notice that I have more vitality on the days when I take it. I have taken E off and on for at about 15 years and am now in my early forties. It's been great as a pms remedy and an after-menstrual-cycle-is-over remedy. I was trying to find out good dosages for E and came across an article that Vit E might act as a substitute for estrogen, which is why it is suggested for menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. Has anyone been taking vitamin E for perimenopause or menopause? Thanks.

I think it would be great if women report in more about their hormonal fluctuations. To be exact, the ways they feel during parts of their cycle and what remedies they take... I think this would be very useful information to have from women of all different ages.

I am in my early 40s and have been paying attention to my hormonal ebbs and flows for a number of months now. I realized that my estrogen levels spike the day before I get my period, then again at the tail end of my period, days 5 and 6 of my period. I feel super-charged physically, ready to take on the world. I think I actually look younger too for those 2 days (ha ha - so much for the ongoing fountain of youth!). My husband also notices a difference and loves those high estrogen days, if you know what I mean... But the interesting thing is that while my body is "on", my emotions are "off" during this same time.. I feel anxious about stupid things... Then a day later things even out again and that super-charged feeling starts to disipate but I am super calm emotionally. I think supplements and remedies should be adjusted during these cycles. For me, I start upping my omega 3s about a week before my period begins (see my flax seed oil post). When my period hits, I take dissolvable magnesium. When I feel my estrogen start to spike, I supplement with natural Vitamin E. Then for 2 weeks I take a few supplements here and there and apple cider vinegar from time to time.

Does anyone know exactly what is happening to your brain chemistry during a woman's 28 day cycle? If so, have you tried experimenting with remedies? Thanks for your insight.

Flax Seed Oil

I have been taking flax seed oil for my skin. However, one additional benefit I have noticed is that flax oil is very helpful during those hormonal fluctuations in my cycle (ie., PMS!). I take more or less depending on how I feel. I take up to 3 tablespoons a day starting a week before I get my period. It takes about an hour, but has an immediate calming effect. I would say the effect lasts about 8 hours before I need to take more. I have also noticed that on day 5 of my period, something shifts in my brain chemistry again (ie., emotional, easily triggered) and I up my flax seed oil dosage again. I am going to keep experimenting with the dosages and will let you all know. I am guessing this could be one of the best remedies to get through perimenopause and menopause. Any else had the same results as me?

I started taking ACV about 3 weeks ago after finding this awesome website. This month, I had a short, productive period minus cramps, bloating, lethargy and moodiness!!! Hallelujah!! Also no more mood swings during the rest of the month. Been quite happy, actually, no negative thoughts or despair at all. I attribute this with the ACV. Actually I just realized how calm I've been... but this may be also due to the honey I take with it. Also has been great for my skin!! And I feel like I digest my food better and have tons of energy. What a great website!! Thanks Earth Clinic!
