Ted's Remedies

I have been looking for a means to address my hair loss and irritated scalp. I have been to many doctors and they have given me everything from cortisone shot, to rogaine and olux foam. All of these things were not covered by insurance because they were listed as cosmetic. After 5 years of various treatments nothing improved. I decided to pray that I would find other ways. Fast forward to today. My scalp was on fire at work and I went to the pharmacy to get the items for Ted's ACV/Hydrogen Peroxide mix and Tea Tree/Lavender Oil mix.

I came home and applied the ACV mixture with a spray bottle. I was surprised at the film that was lifted from my scalp. I knew my scalp itched but didn;t see any build up until I used this mixture and an oily mixture came off my sclap as I massaged the ACV mix. I then left the mixture to sit for a bit and then rinsed with filtered water. My scalp felt many times better instantly. There is no itching. I then loosely flat twisted my hair in 10 flat twists from front hairlinw to the nape of my neck.

After this I applied the Tea Tree/Lavender oil mix from an applicator bottled in between the flat twists. I feel tingling and it is refreshing. This was my first time using these remedies. I have immediate relief and am so thankful for that. I will continue on with these mixtures and hope this not only keeps my scalp clean but provides an environment for regrowth. Thank you to Ted, Earth Clinic members and Earth Clinic.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

I have had alopecia areata for over fifteen years (since my early 20's). At its worst, nearly half of the hair on my head was gone - what was left was scattered in different sized patches. I went through the series of treatments offered by dermatologists including topical ointments, injected and oral steroids (! ) There was always new hair growth but it seemed to eventually get worse.

After a few years a friend encouraged me to consult her sister-in-law who is a Chinese Medicine Practitioner. I will refer to her as 'Z'. Immediately I began a regiment of acupuncture, an herbal remedy (taken for a couple of months only), a combo of tui na, shiatsu, reflexology and, the tool that sealed the deal for real results (in my opinion) was treating each balding area with a tiny tool used in acupuncture known as a seven pointed star (I think that's what it's called). It's pretty much a tiny hammer whose head is covered in small short needles.

Basically, Z would disinfect each area with an iodine solution and lightly (ok, not so lightly) give the bald areas whacks until there was a bit of blood flowing. I know, its sounds horrible and for those with a low threshold for pain or for kids, it'll be a real challenge. All I can say is when I saw the results, I didn't mind the pain at all - if anything, enduring it made me stronger. From my very basic understanding of it, this injury serves a couple of purposes: 1.) It gets blood flowing to the stagnant area and 2.) It does what some of the topical western medicines do - creates an injury/irritation so that the immune system (which attacks the hair in those with alopecia) starts to work on healing the irritation and leaves the hair growth alone to do its thing.

While I still have a bald spot or two at any given time, my condition is nowhere near what it was back then. For now it remains almost entirely a non-issue. I have continued to see Z pretty regularly over the years - taking a few breaks here and there - haven't needed the hammer in years as spots that show up tend to remain smaller and easy to hide until regrowth occurs - hope it stays that way.

For those who have the perserverence to go see someone and know that results could be a good three to six months down the road and will require possible long-term maintenance, I can't encourage you enough to give this a try - oh and you may want to work on a good breathing technique for the few intense moments of pain each appointment but trust me it is well worth it!

Ted, I have developed hair thinning after drinking senna tea and having acupuncture done in my scalp. The thinning area is directly in the area on my scalp where the needles were inserted.

Also What supplements resemble the actions of ASTRESSIN-B?

Read this article please.

According to reports, researchers came across the discovery when testing a chemical compound on genetically-altered mice. The mice's bodies had been programmed to overproduce a stress hormone, called corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF), which, in addition to other things, caused them to lose their fur as they aged.

As part of the study, the balding mice were given five daily injections of a recently-developed anti-stress hormone, astressin-B, and then returned to their habitat. Three months passed, and when scientists returned to collect the rodents for follow-up studies they unexpectedly discovered the once-hairless subjects had re-grown their fur. Reports indicate the injections were 100 percent effective in re-growing hair.

"Our findings show that a short-duration treatment with this compound causes an astounding long-term hair regrowth in chronically stressed mutant mice, " said Dr Million Mulugeta of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

"This molecule also keeps the hair colour (and) prevents the hair from turning grey, " he told the AFP news agency.

"This could open new avenues to treat hair loss in humans, " Dr Mulugeta added.

Here's how MedPageToday characterizes the research:

The mutant mice bred to overproduce the stress hormone corticotrophin-releasing factor become bald on their backs as they age. But after a week of daily injections with a compound to block CRF called astressin-B developed by the group to treat gastrointestinal disease, the mice unexpectedly regrew their missing hair and were indistinguishable from controls.

The effect remained for up to four months, which the researchers pointed out in a press release is a long time in a mouse's less than two-year life span. It far exceeded the mild regrowth produced by minoxidil (Rogain) in the same mouse model, the group reported in PLoS One.

Since CRF is also expressed in human skin, the researchers expressed optimism that a similar approach could be a "breakthrough therapy for alopecia."

I tried the borax solution on my hair, and within 30 seconds it started to tingle a little, then it got really hot and felt like it was burning. Touching my head, I could notice it really was hot, some kind of instant reaction. I quickly rinsed it out, but it kept stinging a bit, and my head was really hot for a couple hours. I also got a headache, or maybe could be described as pressure in my head.

Has anyone else had a reaction like this? I used the 20 mule brand. About 1/2 tsp in 180ml spring water.

This scared me enough to not try it again. I was hoping the borax would cure my issues of dandruff that doesn't go away unless I use baking soda/acv rinse (I want to be able to use shampoo again! ), and rapid hair thinning that has recently showed up, only about 6 months ago. I believe it could be a fungus issue. Maybe it's from fukushima radiation, who knows, I'm on the west coast, and this started about 1 month after the incident.

I usually use a baking soda solution every couple showers, mainly if my head is itchy, flaky, this definitely helps. It tingles like it should, but never burns. I also usually use a ACV 1:5 parts ACV to water rinse with 10-15 drops tea tree oil and 2 drops rosemary oil.

I have haven't been able to use any shampoo for the last 2 years because it just gives me crazy dandruff. Doesn't matter what type of shampoo. I now use completely natural shampoo every once in a while, but still get lots of flakes after using it, although they are finer and less noticable then what I used to get with the chemical shampoos.

Any ideas as to why my head started to feel like it was about to light on fire? I'm scared to try it again as I don't want to lose anymore hair from these experiments!

Thank you for this post! My son is also suffering hair loss from taking Accutane! I hope that Ted answers soon. We are looking for a solution! He has been taking Accutane for about 2 months now and his hair is falling out. I'm going to try Fulvic Acid. Hopefully this will help!

Accutane will definitely cause hair loss. I took it back in 2007 when I was 23years old, and my hair thinned all over.

However, it should be reversible. Like you mentioned, you experienced hair loss 2 months after stopping Accutane, which seems perfectly normal.

Accutane is a very powerful drug and will shock your body from the inside out, and hair loss is just a side effect of it.

I remember a short time after I took Accutane, I looked in a mirror at a retail store and my hair was so thin that I could see my entire scalp. But, before that moment, I didn't even realize I was losing hair. I was 23 and hairloss wasn't even on my mind. I did absolutely nothing to treat the hair loss, but it all grow back over time after I stopped the Accutane.

So in short, I'd be more concerned about the overall side effects of continuing that insane drug Accutane, than I would be about the hair loss it causes.

Same exact thing happened to me. Accutane definitely causes hair loss, among hundreds of more serious and even deadly consequences. Do NOT even consider taking Accutane! It is not worth it! There are tons of natural supplements and dietary changes you can make (like eliminating high fructose sugars like in fruit jucies, and dairy products from cows). Sorry to get this topic off track.

WOW Borax. I would try it but I use baking soda already and it has made my hair grow full! Can't see that huge spot that has been there since I was a teen! Sounds like borax would have been good too. If I'm out of one I can always get the other out. Thanks for info.

Under teds remedies for hair loss he writes about using borax as shampoo. After reading the directions I was a bit confused. Does he mean to dissolve 1/2 Tablespoon of borax in 1 liter of water for 30 minutes until completley dissolved, then wash the hair and scalp with the mixture but do not rinse until the next morning.

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

My hair comes out in handfuls and it has for years. It gets especially bad during times of stress, but for the last couple of months it has been really bad. I decided to try Ted's peroxide/ACV remedy using the 1:10 ration (20ml ACV, 20ml HP, 200ml water). I massaged this into my scalp and then washed with a organic shampoo made from coconut & essential oils (parabens & sulfate free). I made a mix of tee tree and lavender oil which I massaged in and left overnight. The hair was still coming out excessively. The next morning I shampoo'd my hair again but still had a fist full come out in the shower. More came out after the hair had dried and I was gutted. I really hoped this would have worked. My hair is so thin now, I can put all of it up with the smallest hair clip. As the day wore on though, less hair started to come out. I woke up this morning and no hair came out at all. Usually I'm pulling 5 fist fulls our every morning, but not even 1 strand came out. I would definitely recommend this.

Stop Omega-3

Have had hair loss (including eye lashes and eyebrows) for 2 years. This hair loss started after I started doing cleanses and eating healthier. CRAZINESS! Anyway, I have tried numerous things to stop the hairloss to no avail. Hair was still growing, but falling out.

Flash forward to two weeks ago - I found a site where someone was talking about Omega-3 causing hair loss. I started the Omega-3 about two years ago. So, I stopped the Omega-3 that day. Now, my hair/eyelash/eyebrow hair all seems to be shedding a lot less. Anyone else experience something similar?

Hair Loss Remedy Summaries

OK, my previous posts were somewhat rushed and incomplete. Perhaps earthclinic can replace those posts with this one. I have spent many many hours searching this site as well as other sites on the internet, and have come up with what I believe to be some important "facts" concerning hair loss, male pattern baldness in particular. -

It appears that most men who experience it are genetically pre-determined to get it. There isn't really a way to avoid it, unless you go out of your way to slow (or maybe stop) it. I will list what I believe to be the most important causes of it and some things that may be done to combat them.

1. DHT. It appears that there is a chemical called DHT that somehow attaches itself to the hair follicle and kills it off. Men with male pattern baldness appear more succeptible to DHT attack than others. My research has shown that there are a couple (or more) ways to combat DHT.

A)Increase circulation to the scalp. It appears that in many cases of MPD there is poor circulation to the scalp due to stress (tightening of some of the head muscles). One way to increase circulation to the scalp is to apply vasodilators to the surface of the scalp. Minoxidil is a popular (drug) vasodilator. There are natural options as well, such as cayenne pepper, stinging nettles, and others. I have read where onion juice mixed with stinging nettle is an outstanding way to improve scalp circulation and deter DHT buildup. Also cayenne pepper and aloe vera juice. Also the more you can massage your scalp the better, as it greatly promotes blood flow up there. Another way is to change your lifestyle to alleviate stress. Another way is with diet (limit caffeine, eat more foods that help relieve stress such as fresh flax meal and/ or drinking ginseng tea.

B)Absorb it. It seems that putting extra virgin oil (olive, sunflower, sesame) which is the first cold press on your head and letting it set overnight, followed by washing it out will absorb dht and other toxins that choke off your hair follicle.

2. Chemical poisons. I believe that there are chemical poisons that we put on our scalp that either promote DHT buildup, or kill our hair follicles in other ways. I believe some of these poisons include:

A)Chlorine in our tap water. Best way to fight this is by putting a minimal amount of tap water on our scalp and the water we do put should be as cold as bearable. I have found that the more hot water I apply to my scalp, the more my hair falls out.

B)Sulfates and other chemicals found in most shampoos. The best way to avoid these is to find a TRULY all natural shampoo, or use none at all until you can find one. I have found that if I don't use shampoo (or hot water on my scalp) my hair DOES NOT FALL OUT AT ALL, compared to probably 100 hairs per day. This is in conjunction with using a sesame oil/ cayenne pepper rub which I massage in my scalp for approximately 5 minutes per night and do not rinse out. Next I will add a rub of onion juice mixed with stinging nettles and see how that works. So far however I have completely stopped my hair loss, which has been very aggressive for the past few years. I hope someone else hops on board hear so maybe we can find a good combination that will not only stop hair loss but consistently cause new growth for guys with MPB

Hair Loss Remedy Summaries

First off I must say this:
I believe hair loss comes from many things. Some people are prone to hair loss and some are not so there is no miracle cure. For people who are prone, like myself there are things that greatly accelerate it. Here are two things that I noticed in my pursuit of a cure:

1. Stress accelerates hair loss. Do your best to alleviate stress w/ diet and lifestyle changes.

2. SHAMPOO accelerates hair loss GREATLY!!!!!!!!!!!! . Usualy when I take off my cap and run my fingers through my hair 5-10 hairs fall out. I stopped using shampoo a couple weeks ago and lo and behold NO MORE HAIR FALLS OUT!!!!! . The only other thing I do differently is apply sunflower oil/ cayenne pepper when I bathe, and massage it in with a rubber brush with a bunch of "fingers". The reason I believe it is mainly the shampoo is one day I bought some baby shampoo, used it at night and the next day my hair was falling out at almost the normal rate. No shampoo no hair loss. Now, I think that will be your best defense against hair loss. Stop using shampoo.

Will that cause hair to regrow, don't know yet. I have some good herb books and it looks like a rub with onion juice works great to regrow hair, or at least slow the fall. I heard onion juice plus stinging nettle is even better. My plan is to do the onion/nettle massage, followed by a drying of the substance and then a rub with cayenne/ oil. I truly believe this will grow back my hair. Good luck!

Female Hair Loss - after fertility drugs

Hello & thanks for reading this!!! In November 2009 I lost almost all of my hair, after 37 years of LONG THICK hair. I took Clomid for one month and lost a 1" by 1" square of hair. The doc told me no hair loss related... And switched me to Femara... The rest fell out fairly quickly... Over the next couple months. I only took them for a total of 4 months. Later a dermatologist told me the Clomid has a 1% chance of hair loss... And the Femara has a 5% chance of hair loss. It has been almost one year since I have taken ANY of those drugs... My hair is just about gone. I have done 4 months of steriod shots in my head... I did get some growth last month... But then the new stuff recently started falling out. I had 12 viles of blood drawn... Slightly low in B, lower in D (prominant in my area)... All else was fine... Even thyroid. I think the drugs triggered some type of auto-immune in my body... And if someone could just figure out what the trigger was... Maybe it could be fixed????

I have been reading some of the remedies here... Apple cider vinger and so on. I am going to try some of them. But, I'd love to know what has had the most success......... I'm so frustrated... Some of them are such odd mixes of this and that.... I just don't know where to start. PLEASE help if you can... Thanks so much!!!

I wanted some information regarding this remedy. How much olive oil should be taken, 100ml or 500ml for 50 gm of cayenne pepper.

I am Indian and wanted to know the Hindi name of cayenne pepper. Is it simple 'lal mirch' we use at home. Can we use castor oil along with olive oil, or combination of both since I have heard that castor oil encourages hair growth. Also, please update your progress regarding the growth of hair.

If anyone wants to know more about the BSM, on the earthclinic itself you will find many testimonials of people who have used this. It has its benefits and has helped lots of people. Sorry for alarming anyone. This part comes from one of the reviews that I read:

"Iron acts as a cancer-promoting agent by two separate yet synergistic mechanisms: 1) by producing "free radicals, " and 2) by feeding cancer cells. Iron increases the production of free radicals, and-in fact-the production of free radicals is largely proportionate to the level of iron. 4 This means that the more iron there is in the body, the more free radicals will be produced and thus the greater the risk of disease)

Now I suddenly found another bald spot a little further back than the first one and it is already quarter size. I don't want to be put back on that drug because it made me feel different like drugged. This bald spot makes me break down and cry every time I see or think about it. Hair Loss and Wilson's Syndrome

For the last year I have been experiencing hair loss and have tried every remedy on EC with no help. Hopefully I think I have finally found the answer to my problem thanks to EC and those who post here. One day someone posted info on Wilson's Syndrome and I followed up on researching it.

The short of Wilson's Syndrome is you can have all the symptoms of low thyroid but your blood work is fine. The key is low oral temperature below 98.6 on a regular basis which I had. I talked to my doctor and she said she treated this and even had a blood test to check for Wilson's syndrome. With Wilson's syndrome your body is unable to use the T3 your thyroid produces so the treatment is T3.

I have just started to take the T3 twice a day. Internet info says 12 hours apart. Also I was extremely fatigue more so than usual as I have been working on getting rid of CFS and Fibromyalgia. Actually it felt as if I had fallen into a big black hole and couldn't get out. Thanks again EC because I had not heard of Wilson's Syndrome and my doctor didn't look for it with my history of CFS and Fib.

May irritate the respiratory tract. May increase the incidence of upper respiratory infections (pneumonia). Absorption of inorganic manganese salts through the lungs is poor but may occur in chronic poisoning.

Biotin
Posted by Johnn (Toronto, Ont, Canada) on 07/23/2010

To Labrat from Burlington, Nc, Usa. If you are using regular zinc glutonate, only 15 percent of it is absorbed which means only 15 mg of the 100 mg ingested is actually absorbed by your body. Therefore 3x100 mg only nets out at 45 mg actual that your body can use per day. . Again, as I said in my other post, the extra zinc is mostly for the hair color and can probably be reduced without affecting hair growth. Regards, Johnn

Red Raspberry Tea, Kelp

Lorraine: There should not be any reason why you can't use Red Raspberry Leaf tea. I don't think it affects the thyroid per se. It just fixes some of the problems caused by hormone imbalance, and adds minerals and B vitamins that might be depleted due to glands not functioning properly. It's the kelp that affects the thyroid and stops hair fallout cold. Raspberry Leaf grows the hair and makes it shiny.

As for my adrenal problem, it's not entirely fixed. Underlying infections can pull adrenal function down. I had a huge double abscess tooth removed last year, but I was disappointed that my energy did not increase. I seem to be carrying a virus that we cannot identify and have allergies that occasionally fog my head so much I walk into walls. (Claritin-D cuts that one right quick!) I was tested by a hematologist for everything they could think of. Allopathically, my bloodwork was normal. I ran the results by a naturopath: two indicators pointed to either parasites or low iron or both. Nobody seems to want to believe I have parasites! I'm currently using Bill Munro's H2O2 inhalation method. Its been two weeks; my energy is a little better, but I'm not seeing spectacular results yet. So . . . I'm still working on it!

K. from Maidenhead, did you notice any androgenic side effects from taking Saw Palmetto? like increased facial hair, sweating, or anything of the sort? or any other side effects? Saw palmetto is normally recommended for men, that is why I was curious.

Thank You to Noelle from Minneapolis for the advice on Red Raspberry Tea and Kelp. Just started them last week and wanted to know how long to use them. Also menopausal, and adrenals. So far the Red Raspberry seems to calm them down, more so than anything that I have tried. How is your hair growth coming along?

Help! Does anyone out there know if it's harmful in any ways for women to take saw palmetto? Thyroid's done a number on my hair. Looking for ways to hopefully get it back. Always thought SP was a men's herb. Any info regarding this would be helpful. Please feel free to email me about it. Thanks!

Melinda, Saw Palmetto is definitely safe for women to take. It is one of the top ingredients in a lot of herbal breast enhancement formulas for women. I have taken Saw Palmetto for months at a time before and never had any side effects (never got bigger breasts either!) ;-)

T from Baltimore, you seem to know enough about hair loss. I was wondering what kind of doctor can I go to check my ferretin level out.

Noelle, I too suffer from allergies and at times I get fungus on my feet. I am also losing hair. Ive tried everything. Any suggestions?
