Hyssop is a genus of plants including about a dozen aromatic herbal species related to the mint family of garden plants. It is an herbal remedy with roots back to the Biblical age, though some debate exists as to the exact plant referred to as ‘hyssop’ in the Bible.
As an herbal remedy, hyssop is best known as a component of treatments for respiratory conditions. We have already received positive feedback from users on the use of hyssop for emphysema in particular. It is a powerful expectorant. Additionally, hyssop tea has been a traditional natural treatment for rheumatism, taken daily. However, there is some concern about some mild toxicity.
Native to the Mediterranean area, hyssop is a bushy evergreen that can be grown in most climates. The flowers or green tops of the plant are picked and steeped as a tea, infused, or otherwise treated to access their essential oils.
