I found out a week ago on a Saturday that my 8 week old Maltese X Shih tzu, Lexi, had parvo. I couldn't afford the vet bill to keep her there and get the help she needed and they basically told me if I took her home she most likely would not survive through the night. I decided to take her home and try my best to nurse her back to health, the vet gave her an antibiotic needle and one to help with nausea, he also gave a sachet of Lectade which is mixed with water. I was petrified I'd lose her, I wanted to try as many things that I could try to help my puppy. That same day I found this site and heard about active charcoal and the amount of people who used it on they're dogs and got great results, so I tried it on Lexi. I gave her the Lectade water every 30mins to keep her hydrated and then every 2hrs gave her the active charcoal mixed with water and gatorade, the next day I woke up and she was still not great but had started eating bland chicken I had given her, she started walking around a lot more also and later that afternoon had started to get her energy back. That night we were still worried and weary to sleep as she still wasn't drinking by herself, we kept giving her water through the syringe and by Wednesday morning I woke up to a crazy Lexi who was fully of life, running around and jumping and just started eating and drinking by herself.
If I didn't find this site I would never have heard about active charcoal, we don't know 100% which exact remedy we used that helped her, but either the Lactade or Active Charcoal had some kind of effect and I'm so grateful for it. If it wasn't for either, I could have lost my puppy.
Hopefully this puppy didnt die yet. Sub Q fluids is not working. If it was the puppy should have been better by now. If there is blood in the urine go to the vet. Are you sure it is urine? Sometimes the stool is so watery that it looks like urine. I went through the same thing with 5 puppies and after the first one died I learned quickly what to do.
You need to give pedialyte in an enema form to help it absorb into the body. Obviously if the puppy isnt keeping anything down go a different route. In a puppy I would only give 1 to 2 teaspoons with a syringe , without a needle, of pedialyte in an enema. Do this every hour. Dont give the puppy a protein shake. Get some pureed liver and pureed banana and mix it together and give a teaspoon to the puppy a few times a day. Fluids need to be given more than 3 times a day. At least every hour. Try to get an antibiotic for bacteria to give to the puppy. The puppy will die from the bacteria before the parvo. I am not a vet! I am a dog owner that had the same problem and this worked for me. Dont wait until puppies start dying to try to fix the problem. Also take a cup of hot pedialyte add two tea bags of chamomile tea, 2 bags of bigelow mint medley tea, two bags on echinacea tea and a teaspoon of FRESH chopped garlic. Let it sit until it cools and strain out the garlic pieces and remove the bags. Give a teaspoon orally 4 times a day to your puppy. This will help sooth the stomach. I did these things and my puppies were fine in a couple of days. Also put a little of molasses on the gums everytime you give fluids to help keep the glucose levels up.

About Theresa
Theresa from Minneapolis was born and raised in the inner city, always wishing she had been raised on a farm.
Her love for creatures great and small began at an early age, starting with caterpillars - which continues to this day, along with an interest in all insects and 'creepy crawlies'.
Theresa's interest in pet health started with a bird keeping hobby at age 14, where she learned from another hobbyist that the simple addition of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in a bird's drinking water kept fungal infections away; she was able to share this with her avian vet who in turn prescribed it to her own clients; Theresa was surprised to learn that she could teach her vet a thing or two. This important lesson - that each of us can be a teacher - was a turning point for Theresa, and fueled her quest for the knowledge held in lore, and remedies passed by word of mouth. Glad to hear your pup is bouncing back! I just want to stress that even though all appears fine now that the virus is still in his/her system and you should continue treating for at least 10 more days. Also, your pup is shedding the live virus and should not be taken out into the public where you may inadvertently infect other dogs. Please keep us posted!

Not the OP, but my advice is to cut out everything but the pedialyte/electrolyte solution and just a pinch of the activated charcoal. The most critical thing at this point is to keep them hydrated. If you can give fluids under the skin that would help very much. Keep checking their hydration and keep them warm.

Keep Oreo on the activated charcoal for 5-7 days AFTER he seems completely back to normal so he does not have a relapse. Keep feeding him good groceries to build his strength back up.

Did your vet confirm the parvo with a snap test or fecal float? It is important to not misdiagnose parvo with the canine crud or Campylobacter [more below].
It is important to inform your breeder as the virus may have been contracted by another puppy buyer visiting the litter; the sooner all puppy buyers know about the virus the sooner all can start treating their puppies.
You may find good results with a homeopathic product "Parvaid" by Amber Technologies. Another remedy is "Tamiflu" - read up here:
I have an 8 weeks old Doberman that has possibly been exposed to parvo 2 days ago. She seems healthy still. Has had first vaccination. 2nd due Wednesday. Should I start giving her the charcoal now? Will it help prevent her from getting it or lessen symptoms? Had a puppy who died from it at 8 weeks a few months ago. Breeder sold her with parvo. Was sick within 3 hrs of getting her. Only lived 3 days with treatment. Should I use the 1 tablespoon or 2 tablespoon formula?
I'm starting this with 6 week litter of Toy Aussies. One got the smelly diarrhea we started treating everyone hope it helps. They have had 2 vaccines. Though we had parvo in our yard just last year we think mom tracked it in to them.
EC: Pharmacies and grocery stores sell activated charcoal tablets in the medical section for poisoning, which you can grind into a fine powder. Otherwise, health food stores such as Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Erewhon typically carry at least one brand of powdered activated charcoal.
I have been giving my puppy charcoal and Pedialyte and water and he has parvo he is pooping straight blood out and he hasn't threw up anymore but he don't look good he was throwing up all night Tuesday and yesterday he pooped straight blood and it had a bad smell to it and we knew right then it was parvo I have given him three charcoal pills and he does not seem to be doin that good.
We are giving our puppies this mixture, but they vomit it right away!!! Did that happened with your?
We already lost 2 puppies. Now we have found this website and we are going to try this remedy with these other two puppies and we don't want lo loose them.
They are vomiting and lethargic but no blood in their poop yet, so I think we are good on timing. But how did you administer the mixture without them vomiting?
Just left the vets office with my 4 1/2 month old Red Heeler. Diagnosis is Parvo! They gave her a large dose of fluids and send me home with an antiobotic and anti-nausea meds. Even the vet said she doesn't act like a parvo puppy but the test was positive. She does drink some water but hasn't eaten in 12 hours now. She just threw up for the second time and its only a quarter size flem. No diarrhea. Any suggestions? I'm thinking I need some charcoal but not for sure about the dosing.. Please help,,, This is my baby!

There is plenty of info on this site for treating parvo. Also give colloidal silver 3x day 10mls, vit c 500gms 2x per day keep the fluid up liquid chicken stock with no salt.

2 tablespoons to 2 cups of pedialyte/electrolyte solution is a general starting point; if that seems too concentrated try 2 teaspoons to 2 cups of pedialyte. Work on getting small amounts down I e 2cc's, not the entire 2 cups at once. Dose often, hourly, and keep your baby warm. Focus on getting the liquids in over feeding/solid food. Please report back!

I buy mine online/Amazon - but you can also find it in health food stores or if desperate at an aquarium store in larger pellet form that you must grind in to a fine powder before using.
Hello! I'd like to ask the measurement you used for the gatorade and activated charcoal. I hope my puppy will recover soon, we lost his sister 2 days ago. Thank you!

Hi, I just want to know where did you bought the activated charcoal? What specific pharmacy? I am desperate right now because its been 3 days that my 2 months puppy is very ill. We check it with our municipal vet and he was given a parvo shot but it does't do anything good to him. He is too weak, he didnt eat, he always vomit and have diarrhea. Since I couldnt find activated charcoal yet, I opt to use apple cider vinegar. Please tell me what specific pharmacy where activated charcoal is available..thank you in advance. GOD BLESS

Hello I have a puppy who was diagnosed with parvo on Thursday and I've given him Activated Charcoal mixed with Pedialyte and he keeps throwing it back up. What can I do? Did your pet ever throw the Gatorade mixed with Activated Charcoal back up?
Hi.. My 3 months old puppy has been lethargic this morning and vomitted twice.. He hasn't eaten the whole day.. I am not sure if he is showing symptoms of Parvo or distemper. But I have read this thread and I am wondering if the electrolyte with activated charcoal would also help solve distemper issue.. Please help. We have lost a puppy due to parvo.. Please.. I don't want to lose another baby and I am definitely sure my mom will be depressed if we lose Coby..

If this were my puppy I would not hesitate to give him the AC & electrolyte solution -and right away. If your puppy is not acting right, and you suspect parvo or distemper - go with your gut and begin treating right away.
My 4 month old puppy is very sick, I bought charcoal but she threw up clear with a little black, I've been giving her gatorade every 20-30 minutes ): any more advice ? I really don't want to lose her):

I'm sorry your baby is going through this infection.
Activated Charcoal has worked for folks, and also supplementing with electrolytes to combat the dehydration that occurs with the diarrhea. If you can mix and administer the AC with Lectade - an electrolyte formula for pets, or make this recipe at home:
Homemade Pedialyte
4 cups of water (boiled or bottled drinking water) 1/2 teaspoon Morton lite salt (because it has potassium in it as well as sodium chloride) Can use table salt if you have to. 2 Tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon flavored jello or a little juice (I used sodium free broth to add some flavor)
Dissolve the ingredients in the boiling water and cool before serving. You can also freeze it into cubes.
Another contributer used Colloidal Silver [available online or even at your local drug store] to cure a litter of pups with Parvo:
The silver was 70 to 100 PPM [the drug store variety is usually 10 ppm - if its the only one you can, get it and use it] Given twice a day for a week Feed canned wet food

Many drug stores and health food stores or whole foods type stores carry activated charcoal in tablet or loose powder form. Aquarium and pet stores also carry activated charcoal in a granulated form. To treat a dog with parvo you need to either crush the granules or dissolve the tablets, or start with the loose powder form.
Activated Charcoal works especially well when used with electrolytes to combat the dehydration that occurs with the diarrhea. You can make this recipe at home:
Homemade Pedialyte 4 cups of water (boiled or bottled drinking water) 1/2 teaspoon Morton lite salt (because it has potassium in it as well as sodium chloride) Can use regular table salt if you have to. 2 Tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon flavored jello or sodium free broth to add some flavor
Start with 1 cup of electrolyte solution in a small jar with a lid; add 2 heaping tablespoons of AC and then put the lid on and shake to blend. This goes into a syringe well and then can be placed into your dog's mouth; tip the head back and gently depress the plunger to allow him to drink it slowly. If your dog won't take this concentration, use 2 cups of electrolyte solution and 2 heaping tablespoons of AC. For a small dog such as a Chihuahua I would try to get 2cc's down at a time, every half hour for the first three hours; for a larger breed like a pit bull I would try 10cc's for a dose.
If your dog has an appetite, you can mix the AC into canned dog food and make that a bit wetter and sloppier by adding the electrolyte solution to the wet food. The virus generally does not kill the dog - its the resulting dehydration that does the damage - so make sure you get those electrolytes down.
Give your dog the wet AC and electrolyte loaded food am and pm for 5 days and up to 7 days. If he is hungry between meals, give him extra AC and electrolyte feedings.
hi,vwhen you used MMS with parvo, what protocol did you use?? for how long?? with a viral life threatening infection you have to dose for 8 hours for 3 weeks..I used CDS with distemper and it worked wonders. I use it on myself as well.
Cherisse, South Africa --- MMS for parvo. It has cured a dog by just giving a few drops for three days and he was fine at day three. I buy my vegan supplies from Real Raw Food and they are giving this info about their dog at the bottom of their products line. I bought MMS from them. They are trustworthy people.
I just recently got a Maltese X shih tzu puppy thats 9weeks old last Wednesday, I took her to get her vaccination on the Friday and the vet had said she was healthy and everything was fine. Saturday night she started vomiting andlater on had diarrhea that entire day she was so tired and wouldn't eat or drink, took her to the vet today and found out she has parvo and its a high chance she got it from her last owner. I've heard a lot about active charcoal working well for puppies with parvo, I just want to know how much can be given to her? She weighs 1kg. I've been feeding her water mixed with Lectade, that the vet gave, every 30 minutes to every hour. She had an antibiotic shot and another shot to help with vomiting all for 24hrs. If there's anything else we can try to make her better please let me know. I don't want to have to put her down, I want to try everything I can to nurse her back to health

My 2 year old dog got jumped by another dog and 2 days later he started throwing up, diarrhea with blood not eating or drinking hardly anything. ( I know he has Parvo cause all the dogs around the neighborhood been spreading it around). Symptoms just started I gave him some 1tbls charcoal. 12 oz of water and 2 oz of gatorade (you can free hand the gatorade, might help to get him to drink it) in a bottle giving it to him every 2hrs waiting to see what will happen hope he gets better. Wish me luck.

Thank you, we did find the charcoal tabs. We have been desperately trying to save this puppy. The one with Parvo isnt mine, he is the sibling of mine. I have been going over to my friends house two and three times a day to help administer fluids and do the subcutaneous fluid on his neck. He is still alive but now we are about 7 days into this and he is a bag of bones, the anti-vomiting fluid doesnt seem to be working any longer either. I have forced pedialyte, chicken broth, protein shake, water, you name it we have tried it. He also has blood in his urine as well as stool. I just dont know what else to do, we have done about three doses of the charcoal but that doesnt stay down either. This is so heart breaking. Any one have any other ideas? I am thinking that he just might be too far gone to save. All the other puppies died very quickly within a day or two, this one has now been fighting for a week. I go through quite a cleaning ritual every time I go to their house and back to mine to make sure I dont bring the virus into my home and infect my baby. I am so scared to bring it home, but cant bear not going and trying to help save this puppy, he is the brother of mine. And so far mine is showing no symptoms, but I am watching him like a hawk. Mine has had his first set of shots and receives his second tomorrow. I desperately want to save his brother.

That quest for knowledge continues to this day, as new and old remedies alike are explored. She may not have experience with a particular issue, but she will research it to the best of her ability and share what she finds freely, in the hopes that you can heal or improve your pet's health.

Start with 1 cup of electrolyte solution in a small jar with a lid; add 2 heaping tablespoons of AC and then put the lid on and shake to blend. Thin if this is too thick for your dog to swallow easily. Depending on the size of the puppy/dog, for a smaller breed or tiny pup, you might consider 2 cc's of the pedialyte every 20 minutes, and then 2cc's of the AC/electrolyte mixture every 2 hours for 6-8 hours/first night.

This website saved my sanity. We somehow brought parvo into our pack (7 dogs) during a time when we had a visiting dog. The 14 month old dogs were the ones who came down with it. The 1st one recovered on her own after 3 days. Her main symptoms were she would not eat or drink. The second one spent 3 days at the vets office getting IV fluids and antibiotics because she was dehydrated (main symptom was bloody diarrhea). She also did not want to swallow the fluids I was trying to give her. So the guest dog went home and then got sick so I had them bring him back so I could keep him hydrated. He vomited all day -- more than I could get in him. I was really scared. Then I found your website and read about giving the activated charcoal. I gave it every 2 hours and after the 3rd dose Barley licked his leg where some of the liquid fell. So I put water and aloe vera juice in a bowl and he lapped it up. He has gone back to not drinking (or eating), but he has not vomited at all and I am able to keep him hydrated.
I live in ridgecrest as well and noticed my pup was acting a little weird this morning and kept a close eye on him most the day. He was acting a little lazy so I took him in and he tested positive for parvo and the vet said I caught it very early and gave him an iv and some shot and sent us home with tamiflu. He seemed very interested and excited to see what this tamiflu would do at such an early onset. All that being said if walgreens wasn't all ready closed I'd be giving him charcoal as well...
Well I'm reading about the Charcoal and I cant believe how I never heard about that. I have a miniture Datson and she was just over a yr old , about going on 2weeks she became fatigued and would not eat or drink, I took her to vet hospital and she was diagnosed with parvo, I new I could not afford a vet bill like that, I am a single mother of three, and she had become our family... I shed tears like u would not believe and even spend my last to get the antibiodic and pills for nausea, including Dr. Visit for them to tell me she would not survive at home and all I could do is try. But I was gona try it anyway... The pills thy gave her made her have seizures and she bcame worse. I didnt now what to do, then my mom told me to stop giving her the medicine and give her whats called [colloidal silver]
And unbeilieveable!!!! Within the second day, bloody stools, vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue was going away. She started to drink more and to this day is starting to eat on her own, she lost alot of wieght but we are working on tht. And I am disinfecting yard and house. I really thought we were gonna lose her, but she is doing better, yet I feel like I need to educate myself more about parvo, she had her shots whn it hit her so not sure why it did. but learning about charcoal stunned me, we will see what the future holds .....
Re dog parvo: Yes, colloidal silver will kill viruses and bacteria. Excellent choice including rehydration and activated charcoal.
Remember, honey and royal jelly in warm water will kill bacteria and are a food. Another option for rehydration would be coconut water. Giving antibiotics in addition to these options is not necessary.
It just is soo upsetting that vets will clean out their clients or even send them away if the money is not forthcoming. Stay tuned in on EC; it will save not only money but your pet will not be harmed by harsh and ineffective drugs. Hope the best. Om
Hello I have a 3 month Chihuahua and I think it may be having symptoms of parvo.. Can someone please tell me what exact charcoal I can safely give him....????? PLEASE HELP....!!!

Start small - mix up 1 teaspoon in to 1 cup of broth and shake well to mix and see if he will tolerate that. The key is to dose often so he does not get dehydrated.
Yes I have a 3 1/2 month old puppy. He had had his first shots. But just last night he started throwing up and will not eat drink any fluids. Reading about this colloidal silver.
My pup was sooo sick when we got her, (she was too young and not properly weaned we discovered after we got her home, so sad! ) colloidal silver was a lifesaver for her, INSTANT progress! Bonus - she LOVED it! - I put it in a tiny mist sprayer and sprayed her open mouth (most of the time she would just lick it up) and I sprayed her nose so she could inhale it.
Also, I fed pureed squash or pumpkin with tumeric and warm broth and she would eat that with some rice. Now if she sees that small little mist sprayer she comes and just sits at my feet and stares, hoping to get a little spray...lol--Good Luck to you!

Six months old puppy diagnosed by Vet as Parvo. Had been sick one day when taken to Vet. Took her home and mixed up one tablespoon activated charcoal in 12 ounces of water. Using a large barrel syringe I slowly put the charcoal into the backside of her mouth so she would have to swallow it. Even though she is 75 pounds, one glass of this mixture made a great difference within one hour. I gave her two more doses at 2 hour intervals and she was by this time drinking on her own and no vomiting or diarrhea [since the first dose] so put a little charcoal in her drinking water. She was eating a little by the next day and by the third day was back to full normal. I continues to add some charcoal to her drinking water for four more days [not much because then she wouldn't drink much of it, just enough to make it cloudy, mildly gray]. I have also used it the same way when my dogs have been poisoned with rat poison, with the same excellent results.
Hello everyone I just wanted to thank everyone who posted about the activated charcoal and my buddy Tank thanks you to I spent the day at the vet for them to tell me tank had gotten parvo. I was already giving him the pedialyte cuz he wouldnt eat or drink I didnt know what else to do other then keeping him hydrated then I found this site about the charcoal and thought I had to try it so I ran out and found them came home and mixed it with water like everyone said and fed it to him with a baby dropper he kept it down and a few hours later I gave it to him again and like others had said you could see a diffrence in him with in hours and today he is eating well and seems happy im gonna put a little bit in his water bowl just to be on the safe said I never post on anything but I really felt I needed to thank all of you for the info so thanks again from Tank and Tyler ill post in a few days to let you know how its going thanks again.
