Cushing Syndrome, also called Cushing’s Disease or hyperadrenocorticism, is an over-production of adrenal gland hormones. Excess adrenal hormones can cause a variety of symptoms and dog health issues that are easy to misdiagnose as other illnesses or aging, and therefore the syndrome can be difficult to diagnose.
Symptoms of Cushing disease include increased appetite, drinking, urination, panting, high blood pressure, skin discoloration and lumping, hair loss, weakness and lethargy, and a bulging or sagging belly due to decreased muscle strength.
A dog suffering from Cushing syndrome may also be the cause of a normally well behaved dog breaking his or her housetraining or begging to go out at odd hours of the night. Diagnosis is typically made through a blood test.
