I remember inquiring for help concerning the tingly sometimes, burning feeling on my face. I had started thinking it was stress.
I got some advice that got me through that time.
Soon I stopped using some of my supplements then start back up again.
Well, I had stopped using the Iodine. I had been obviously taking too many drops for me, about 4 drops of 5mgs or 7mgs of Lugols Iodine in a glass of water.
Any way I wanted to kill an infection, so I started back on the iodine. One to two drops in water this time, plus a little on infected area. I began to feel that old tingly burning feeling in the face again.
It good to know what is causing a situation, then we wont be trying to fix it while still consuming the cause.
I only took it a few days this time. Just enough for my healing.
Just read comments about iodine. Can you help me please!
I started using Lugol's iodine from Amazon, it states external use, so I started to apply it on the skin, starting with one drop a day. The patch went after few hours. I increased to two drops a day, then three drops a day over a period of about six weeks. The patch still disappears before twenty four hours! On average between sixteen to twenty hours.
However, where I was putting the iodine on my skin, inner leg, I have got a itch rash now, lumpy and also two or three dark spots and I have come out in a couple of facial spots which is unusual for me. I have had some metal taste in my mouth, but not sure whether that was anything to do with iodine as that happened a few days after I stopped taking it!
If it is true that your deficient if the skin patch goes before twenty four hours then it suggests I am deficient still with three drops a day, but now I have this itchy skin. What can I do? I did drop down to one drop and the skin patch went quicker, so I am not sure how I can get it into my body now I have had this skin reaction! I am reluctant to take in orally as its states external use, although some people on Amazon have reviewed the product and said they take it orally.
I have dodgy digestive system so I have to be careful, I have severe M.E my body is very fragile.
Why would I get this skin reaction after six weeks! Any ideas how to proceed please!
Lorraine: You show many signs of toxicity. Iodine increases cell voltage which sorta-like supercharges cells into recovery, which enables them to "throw off" or displace toxins stored from weak conditions. Since your digestive system, especially the lower or colon, cannot properly excrete these toxins they are recirculated back into the bloodstream and ending up on the surface or your skin. All this condition is called "herxheimer reaction" and is the first step of the healing process.
Your next step in recovery is cleaning & optimizing the digestive system. Under the "Ailments" or "Remedies" E.C. section at top page, go to Gallstones, Parasites, and Colon.
This takes some time & commitment so feel free to come back and post your progress and for some extra help you may need in this endeavor.
Put it on a different place every day.
Are there parts of the body that are better for transdermal absorption of Lugol's than others?
For instance; the armpits –which may (or may not) provide of side benefit of deodorizing. The commercial holistic deodorants (such as Toms) don't work for me; but apple cider vinegar, milk of magnesia and baking soda do quite well. I'm thinking that a solution of Lugol's plus Oil of Magnesium (Magnesium Chloride) might serve multiple benefits.
Would appreciate any experience-based comments.
Did you ever find your answer?
I have hypothyroid and Candida issues. So, I started on the Lugols Iodine protocol + Accompanying Nutrients + Alkalizing protocol suggested by Bill Thompson 4 days back. Today is day 4.
On Day 2, I noticed that my tongue was was turning a little brown. Day 3 – yesterday, I am having a little bit of throat discomfort. Today, I am having severe discomfort in the throat and cough as well.
Please suggest what needs to be done to mitigate the issues. Is it time to take a break for next 2 days or should I add something to the protocol? I am doing 2 drops of Lugols (5% – J.Crow's lugols Iodine) once a day.
Hi Sunitha…I'm sorry that you're having problems with the iodine protocol, but this is quite common in the West where people have been eating poor processed food for decades.
When you supplement lugols iodine, two problems can occur:
* If you don't bother to take all the iodine companion nutrients exactly as advised then you probably will have problems. These companion nutrients are critical to ensure that vital enzymes and catalysts are present so that the iodine is correctly absorbed, converted, assimilated and used in the thyroid and used throughout the rest of the body. So if you don't take these companion nutrients then you may well have problems(which are usually all due to a poor processed food diet — lacking in these nutrients). The essential reasons for taking the iodine companion nutrients are all explained here and here.
* Iodine is also a magnificent detoxer so, when you take iodine, it will help to remove cadmium, aluminum, mercury, lead, arsenic, bromine and fluorine from your cells and will dump these poisons directly into the blood. Consequently, all sorts of other side-effects are possible from iodine detox which is wholly dependent on your own high poison intake from your processed food diet and lifestyle. I also suspect that you are having bromine detox symptoms — see this link.
To confirm what heavy metal and halide poisons you have in your body, I would also advise that you simply get a hair analysis done(quite cheap). This will tell you your body's heavy metal and halide poison status.
If you suspect that your body is high in heavy metals then I would supplement liquid cilantro drops and chlorella. To get rid of fluorine and bromine, you should take lugols iodine(with all companion nutrients) in amounts that are low and slow. The Borax Protocol also helps to get rid of fluorine.
For now, I would stop your iodine protocol and just take the iodine companion nutrients as advised for a week then restart your protocol at low dose initially. If that doesn't work then I would do a serious heavy metal detox for at least a month then retry the full iodine protocol again.
I have been taking 8 drops of 5% Lugols Iodine every day for the last 8 years without any problems. I'm pretty sure that my own heavy metal and halide status are at healthy low levels and not a problem and I always take the iodine companion nutrients at their correct dosages to avoid any further problems.
Something else which might interest people who live in the US.
Selenium is vital for the production of glutathione peroxidase(GP) in the body which is essential and critical for both liver health and thyroid health. GP is also vital for the body’s detox pathways.
So here is a particularly interesting map showing selenium deficient areas in the US (which are colored dark blue):
Selenium Deficient Soils — US
So anyone living and eating food in the dark blue areas of the US will most likely be selenium deficient.
Many thanks for putting this wealth of info together for all of us. You've no doubt helped so many! Would you please share how much niacin and zinc you would recommend taking per day? Also, any recommendations for a good mineral supplement that can provide all/ most of the daily essentials?
A sudden surge in the Iodine supplementation will cause Itchy throat and coughing. Till the body adapts you have to moderate the dosage.
You could also be suffering a Herxheimer reaction from Candida die-off, which will pass, but don't stop the iodine. You may consider salt loading with unrefined salt, 1/2 tsp. in water or licked, dissolved on tongue and washed down with 8+oz of plain water. This is designed to help eliminate toxins in urine but stimulating copious urination within the hour. If it doesn't do that the first time, it is ok to repeat the procedure up to two additional tries for a total of 3 times in 12 hours, which is just precaution to prevent overloading on sodium. Drink plenty of water. Also, you could take extra Vit.C and magnesium to fight this detox episode.
I had the sore throat and coughing also when I first started taking the Lugol's in water. I stopped because of it for over a year. Now I am taking 16 drops in my morning shake and don't even notice any problems at all. Try taking with something besides just water.
Can one be on LI therapy and Borax at the same time?
I just bought lugol's 5% solution on Amazon. I used 2 drops in water. The next morning I had vaginal bleeding. I was so scared that I stopped using it. That was the only day I had the bleeding. Does anyone know why that would happen. I really wanted to take iodine because of the benefits people have experienced. I do not know if I should start using it again or not?
Sam, if you feel you need Lugol's Iodine, why don't you paint it on your skin (soles of feet, for example) instead of ingesting it?
Yes, it can do this and it is normal. Your body is trying to stabilize your hormones and this may cause your periods to be irregular. With continued use, it will stabilize.
Hi. I had the same thing happen. Did you continue use?
I learned that ingesting 5% is too strong. I was instructed by my alternative health care professional to make sure that I take Lugol's 2% or 2.5%. I hope this helps.
After taking the 5% solution of lugols iodine, I get a strange metalic taste in my mouth. I wondered if this was normal and if anyone else experiences this?
Hi Jr… It is certainly possible to get excess iodine symptoms as a metallic taste in the mouth, although my own suspicions are that this problem, when supplementing iodine, may well be caused by the excess bromine in your body being displaced from cells into the blood by the iodine. Excess bromine from the tissues is difficult to remove from the body and this can also cause a metallic taste in the mouth. See this article here on Bromism.
I myself have taken 16 drops a day of 5% lugol’s iodine iodine for an extended period and have never had any metallic taste or any other symptoms arise. But I come from a country where bromine is not added to the bread — but in America, bromine is always added to bread during baking. And whenever you supplement lugol’s iodine, you must always ensure that you take the full Iodine Protocol shown here to avoid problems caused by a poor diet (low anti-oxidant, low mineral processed food diet).
If the metallic taste arises from excess bromine in the blood (from supplementing lugols iodine) then you should simply use the simple Sea Salt Protocol as shown in this link to get rid of the excess bromine problem.
Theory of Bromide Dominance.
Bill, I too get that “metallic” taste in my mouth when I take iodine. To me, it tastes similar to a chlorine taste. I just figured that that’s what the halide elements tasted like. I tried looking it up, but couldn’t find anything. I do make sure that I put my iodine in distilled water to rule out the fluoride/chlorine interaction and just chug it down. I also avoid bread products unless I know that the flour does not have bromine in it and have avoided sodas with brominated vegetable oil, like orange. I do take the companion nutrient protocol as advised, as well, including the salt water. I don’t have any other symptoms of brominism, though. I’m just offering my experience!
Hi, I read that many people are iodine deficient. I am in need of more energy, so I thought perhaps it was due to an Iodine deficiency. So I tried Lugols 2%. I took 5 drops in water per day for the first 3 weeks, didn’t notice any changes, took 7 drops per day in water for about 10 days, still no changes. Then I stepped back and noticed I had gained 10 lbs in the last month which is a lot for me (I am 5’7″ 170lbs normally-should be 160lbs), so there was a change but I don’t know if it was caused by the Iodine and wanted to get some feedback on my Iodine use. I stopped using it in the last few days to see if any of the weight comes off, no change yet. Did I use it long enough, or did I not need it to begin with?
@ Asktodaboutrealestate: Your weight gain could be the displaced toxins being stored in your body until it has time to process them. It sounds like you increased your Iodine dose too quickly but more importantly, you were probably not taking the companion supplements that aid the body with this detox (Selenium, Magnesium, Unrefined Celtic salt, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2/3. Since your kidneys and other organs could not keep up with the toxins being displaced by the Iodine, it stored those in body fat hence the weight gain from the bloat. This is just a theory I have heard about and feel is potentially true. For anyone who wants to try Iodine supplements, I suggest you research thoroughly before you begin.
I started taking iodine internally, namely Lugol’s iodine, two days ago. Only using 2 drops per day. My blood sugars are much higher than normal. Before using the Lugol’s, I simply was painting regular iodine on my skin of which I purchased at CVS drugstore in the first aid section. What could be causing the Lugol’s to raise my blood sugars? Perhaps I should stop taking it or maybe try using it transdermally? Thanks, signed Baffled
Elizabeth, it could be that your basal or overall metabolism is boosted by the Iodine, but a Chromium deficiency is causing a lag in sugar metabolism via ineffective Insulin uptake. Take 200 – 400 mcg Chromium Picolinate at least twice a day. Some Cinnamon caps would also help.
I have been taking lugol’s solution for a few months now. I don’t have any particular health issues per se, so am basically taking it for overall health. I did notice that after a while my breast has become sore even after my period has come and gone. It is basically sore all day and I am not pregnant. My worry is that it is coming from the Lugol’s solution. Has anyone else exereinced this if so what is the cause? I thought that iodine was supposed to help with breast pain.
I just saw your question so maybe it is too late to respond, but I also had this problem a few months after I reached the full dosage of iodine (taking Iodorl and slowly increasing my dose to 50mg). Nevertheless, I continued and that symptom went away and my breast tissue has never been better, one year later.
Thank You for the wonderful information on this website; it is a great resource~ I recently have started supplementation for iodine in the past month and I have noticed a symptom that I am concerned about: burning eyes. Is there a connection between iodine supplementing and this? I am taking all the companion supplements. However, 500 mg of niacin is a little too strong for me at this point, so I am taking 100 mg 2 x/day instead of 500 mg/2 x day. I was taking 4 drops of Lugol’s 2% initially, bumped that up to 4 drops 2 x/day and just went up to 6 drops/2 x day. Is this too much? I had detox symptoms before taking the companion supplements, now the eyes seem to be my main issue. If anyone has helpful advice or guidelines, I would love to know.
Hi Alicia… I don’t think you are taking iodine in excess — you are taking, in effect, only about 32 mgs per day(of 2% Lugol’s Iodine).
I think your eye burning problem is more problably caused by niacin excess or overdose:
“Symptoms of overdose of Niacin (B3) include: whole flushing of the body, burning sensation in the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, blurred vision, skin itching, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lightheadedness.”
You may be getting enough niacin in your diet — try taking niacin once every two or three days for a while or even eliminating it altogether to see if that makes a difference.
I work in a lab & use grams iodine when making slides, the iodine fumes make my eyes water & sting.
In 1986 when I had a gall bladder scan, I was given iodine tablets. I had a reaction–eyes swelled shut and face swelled as well. Do not remember having any respiratory issues.
I since have eaten shellfish, use salt, etc. without any allergic reactions.
Having been told I had an allergic reaction to the tablets, do you think I could also have allergy issues with the Lugol’s Iodine?
I have been reading about the health benefits of Lugol’s and very much want to try it. I am having a lot of health issues (breast cancer being one) and believe that it could help me. I am on Armor Thyroid right now as well.
Thank you for any suggestions!!
I was taking Lugol’s iodine for about a week, then stopped for 2 weeks, then started up 2 days ago, 5 drops diluted in water (what women say to take daily for breast cancer prevention). Right after taking the drops yesterday, I had an immediately reaction: runny nose and slight pressure behind the eyes. Today (Monday) my nose is still runny, but the pressure behind my eyes is a bit less. I know the runny nose is from having too much iodine in my body. Should I be worried? How can I pull the excess iodine from my system? I am going to stop the iodine for at least a month now and if I take it in the future, no more than 1-2 drops at a time.
Actually iodine that you are taking are mostly harmless. The eye pressure and headache issue has a lot to do with the problems associated with elemental iodine. Taking about 1000 mg x 4 of vitamin C sodium ascorbate should neutralize most of the problems.
If not, eat white bread as it is high in bromine. I have taken much more iodine before, but it is in the form of potassium iodide and sodium iodide, closer to 100 mg, not mcg either. The Japanese eats 1000 times above iodine dose and has no effect because the high content of bromine and iodine are found in kelp. A kelp supplement inspite of high iodine, has much higher bromine and can also displace it.
In general no harm but elemental iodine are oxidative in nature and vitamin C sodium ascorbate should lessen that problem. What elemental iodine does to the body is it raises the ORP to be a positive value and the sodium ascobate 1000 mg x 5 will put the ORP to a normal negative values just as before. Drinking plenty of water with a small amount of sea salt will displace the unneeded iodine.
The runny nose and sinus headache (pressure behind your eyes) are most likely a detoxification effect of the iodine you are taking. The iodine has the effect of detoxifying your body of the other toxic halides that are so prevalent in our modern diets and environments. The addition of vitamin C usually helps with the detoxification. The toxic halides are fluorine, chlorine, and bromine. They are toxic to our bodies and have no use by our bodies. They will attach to iodine receptors in the body, but they won’t perform the function of iodine, thus the toxicity.
Fluorine and fluoride are added to most municipal water supplies these days, but many, many studies show no difference in the number of cavities and dental maladies between fluoridated and nonfluoridated water populations. Better dental hygiene and education have reduced the cavities more than the addition of fluorine to our water supplies. Trusting community leaders were sold on fluoridation by an industry that needed an outlet for its toxic byproduct, no we all are forced to consume the toxic fluorine.
Chlorine is toxic. Chloride is essential in the body, but chlorine is toxic. Chlorine is added to many water supplies, is used in pools, is found in bleach. The byproduct of chlorine bleach is dioxin, one of the biggest carcinogens known to our planet. Iodine could be used to make and keep our water supplies and pools safe, and is not toxic like chlorine.
Bromine is toxic and has replace iodine in the treatent of wheat for our flour. Bromine is found in flame-retardant and insecticides. We are exposed to bromine from many environmental sources. It is toxic.
With the abundance of toxic halides we are routinely exposed to in our modern diets and environments, it is not unusual to experience detoxification effects when you increase your iodine intake. The detoxification may occur, but the runny nose and the headache (and acne or any other symptom of the toxic substances leaving your body) will subside as the toxins are eliminated. The addition of vitamin C and fish oil along with the iodine will help with the detoxification. But, I do not agree with the previous suggestion by Ted that consuming bread (presumably for the bromine content) is a wise solution to the underlying cause of the effect (ingestion of more toxins may temporarily relieve your runny nose, but it is also adding more toxins to be eliminated from your body).
Lugol’s solution is potassium iodide, the same iodine compound found in seaweed and sea vegetables, but in a standardized form, and elemental (molecular) iodine. Molecular iodine dissolves more readily in water that already contains potassium iodide. In our bodies, the thyroid gland absorbs iodide, breaks off the potassium or sodium portion of the compound and concentrates the iodine portion in the thyroid gland. Elsewhere in the body, the mammary glands and the ovaries have huge demands for iodine, too, but their preferences seem to be for molecular iodine. The whole endocrine system utilizes iodine or iodide, the digestive system needs iodine, the integumentary system, the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and the skeletal system all need iodine or iodide. Excess iodine is excreted in the urine. The presence of sufficient iodine in the body detoxifies the body of not only the toxic halides, but also heavy metals, such as lead ad mercury.
Physicians knew of the wonders of iodine over a hundred years ago, then a bad study cast it into the depths of oblivion until recent research into breast health and thyroid health have brought it back into the medical world’s attention. Iodine is a natural product. There is little monetary profit for anyone to make from its promotion. The “profit” is for all of us in society whose heath and well-being has been suffering since iodine was cast off in error. Hopefully, the modern research will recapture the attention of mainstream medicine and we will be able to undo the damage.
Lugo’s iodine caused my heart to palpitate (and not in a good way; the bad way). So I thought no more Lugo’s. I felt bad because I read the health benefits on this site and others and I could not take even one drop. Then while reasearching fatty acid metabolism I found that you use a lot of vitamin B-1, B-6 and B-12. All the of these B’s have heart palpitaions as a sign of their deficiencies. So I took all three. Now I can take Lugo’s. Yeah!
Also selenium and zinc deficiencies can cause heart palpatations. So if you can’t take iodine because of the heart quivers you might have a deficiency you need to correct first.
I get heart palpitations when I drink coffee or tea. It's the caffeine for me. So I add a bit of organic BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES to my coffee. That prevents me from having heart palpitations. BSM contains several minerals, which coincides with your theory that heart palpitations are as a result of a mineral deficiency.
Remember that minerals or supplements and treatments can be either a food or a poison. Food at the correct dose and a poison if too concentrated. If you analyze your hair the minerals are measured in parts per million. So very weak solutions of iodine regularly are better, not enough to discolour but enough for the skin to absorb. This also solves the problem of finding discoloured iodine. The same applies to anything that may burn, if it burns you are using far too much and causing damage instead of causing healing.
