Homemade Sunscreen Bar Recipe

Folks across the globe have started making homemade sunscreen bars to avoid the chemical-filled store bought sunscreens. While the SPF of homemade sunscreen is not as high as what you can buy and will need to be applied more often, homemade sunscreen bars do not typically cause the kind of side effects of regular sunscreen, like allergic reaction, dermatitis, eczema, and hormone interruption.

Oils like coconut oil and mango butter are naturally protective from sun rays. Zinc oxide is added to natural sunscreens because it reflects and scatters the sun’s rays. While the protection is not as strong as commercial sunblock, the risks are much less. Combine homemade sunscreen bars with moderate sun exposure and avoiding being out in the sun for long periods between 10 am and 2 pm.

Mama's Homemade Sunscreen Bars Recipe

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup mango butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa butter
  • 1/2 cup grated beeswax
  • 2. Tablespoons non nano particle zinc oxide

1. Melt the oils and beeswax together in a double boiler.

2. Remove from heat and stir in the zinc oxide. (Avoid inhaling the zinc oxide dust.)

3. Pour into silicone molds. Remove when cool. Store in a cool place.

The lotion bar will melt deliciously against your skin, giving some protection from the sun and nourishing the skin as well.

Add 15 drops of peppermint essential oil to make a cooling sunscreen. This sunscreen is also safe for your lips!
