5-HTP is an amino acid derived from the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia, a West African medicinal plant. The full compound is 5-hydroxytryptophan, and is part of the synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin from the amino acid tryptophan. Low serotonin levels can manifest as a number of modern maladies. In particular, positive associations exist between using 5-HTP and depression, and as a result 5-HTP is useful for people coping with depression.
While a relatively new health supplement in the United States, it has been used medicinally in European countries for decades. Additional health claims about 5-HTP promote its use for other health conditions associated with low serotonin levels including obesity, narcolepsy, migraines and daily headaches, tension headaches, sleep apnea, insomnia, bulimia, premenstrual syndrome, fibromyalgia, and carbohydrate cravings.
