CURE ACID REFLUX

Updated: 08/04/2008

Acid Reflux or GERD is a very common condition in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up into the esophagus. It can be extremely painful and linger on and on. However, we believe that with patience, a healthy diet and a few home remedies, you can cure acid reflux!

As often seems to be the case, we start with Apple Cider Vinegar and its amazing potential to improve overall health. It may seem counterintuitive to use acid to cure an acid problem (check out our Question and Answer section to see how often that query pops up), but it has worked for so many of our readers that we can no longer doubt it. Still, everyone is different, in sickness and in health! If ACV won't work for you, there are over 75 more methods to be found below that have brought relief to our online community.

TED'S REMEDIES

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "My remedy for acid reflux is baking soda, or ACV plus baking soda only. Rarely will ACV alone work.

EC: Ted has given us a fantastic recipe for Acid Reflux (combination ACV and baking soda). In fact, this remedy seems to do a better job curing Acid Reflux and GERD than plain old Apple Cider Vinegar! Click here for the formula and people's comments, including side effects."

------------------------------------------------

12/04/2006: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "Some time ago, I watched a movie, Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me of how he experimented eating McDonald's food for 30 days. On the third day, I remember him vomiting the entire food while he was in a car and it occurred, I think, after eating burgers and finally the large french fries.

Of course I didn't think much about that until my sister bought me the same fast food that I had to eat (yuck!) So when I ate, my stomach stopped digesting like I was having some kind of acid reflux. But this is an extremely mild one that doesn't come back day after day, since I don't normally consume fast food.

I knew what was causing the problem, the food I ate was excessively oily and it happened in the same pattern as Morgan Spurlock, the feeling came just right after I ate the french fries (extra large - I don't buy this size, but they seem to give this ALL THE TIME!)
The cure for this kind of fast food acid reflux seems obvious, I have to jump start with some mild acid to help with the digestion, or reduce the oil buildup caused by the french fries. So simply drinking apple juice, pomegranate juice, or grape juice right after eating a very oily food, could possibly another home remedy you can add to the long list for acid reflux. The juices I mention are good oil solubizers and thins the oil. Of course, taking Apple cider vinegar here will also help, right after the meal. But the major source of the problem lies with eating excessively oily foods, trans fatty acid, and fried foods.

It must be understood, that I have seen people who appears to have difficulty swallowing or they can't digest the food (for days), which was initiated by many factors, food poisoning, drug overdose, ulcers, etc. So whatever the cause, sometimes an acid reflux is misdiagnosed, where in fact it is a mild case of anorexia.

The treatment for it I found was vitamin B5, such as 500 mg and along with vitamin B complex also. I can dare say for a mild case of this condition, the problems stopped with just one single dose.

In some cases I used magnesium chloride and that seemed to stopped it completely, within minutes. Fresh frozen royal jelly, 1 tablespoon also stopped completely, one single dose. Also within minutes. Vitamin B5 plus vitamin B complex, one single dose stopped it completely.
In all these conditions it would seem like an "acid reflux" but it was not, for me it was a very mild case of anorexia (the stomach simply refuses to digest the food!). Therefore for people who do have acid reflux, this opens a new possibility in such a treatment to look along the anorexia continuum on the very mild side.

People often picture people with anorexia, like that of the singer Karen Carpenter, who throws up food until she became so thin she died of starvation. However, not many know that the conditions of anorexia works in a continuum.

Let's start from the extreme to the mild anorexia conditions:
Throws up completely after food
Throws up occasionally after food
Sometimes throws up, sometimes almost throw up
Merely goes up the throat after meal, burning it
Difficult digestion, shoots up constantly after meal

The above are a continuum, and it is quite possible that the acid reflux is caused by a deficiency bought on to by side effects of drug, food poisoning, or other external factors causing it, such as nervous tension.

Therefore under this scenario, the difference is the difficulty of digestion, or that it shoots back up to the throat, or experience vomiting as part of a continuum of anorexia. If it was misdiagnosed, as acid reflux, the use of supplements to treat a very mild form of anorexia is quite possible, since it is only a natural supplement.

It must be noted that all acid reflux I have experienced, at least in Bangkok anyway were gotten rid of with just one single dose of any of these that you can try (one may work so you have to run through the list): vitamin B complex, vitamin B5, and magnesium chloride or even fresh frozen royal jelly when nothing works. Ted"

[YEA]  05/27/2007: Toomba from Kuching, Malaysia writes: "http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/article/3428/heartburn.html... 66 percent of cases, a treatment consisting primarily of acidophilus and digestive enzymes will usually do the trick. In Dr. Spreen's words: "Acidophilus supplements (powder form, the liquid tastes awful) protect the oesophagus without killing acid (while killing the pain almost immediately). The hassle is, you have to keep it handy and take it often if you don't solve the whole problem, which involves tightening the gastro oesophageal sphincter. Dr. Spreen describes his treatment as "ridiculously simple and cheap." And while he feels confident that he can stop more than 2/3 of all heartburn and reflux cases."

I ran out of the cherry juice and can't comment on how well it worked but I can tell you that the acidophilus has been working; I was taking it at night after my meal and was sleeping without a problem. I'd recently taken a few generic pain relievers and coincidentally or not my acid reflux returned; I'm going to carefully monitor when I take it and how I feel from now on."

ALKALINE ACID DIET

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/23/2007: Cynthia from Bergen County, New Jersey writes: "All these remedies do not address what people are putting initially in their bodies! Everyone is consuming acid causing foods. The basic theory is that acidic foods (ex. orange) cause an alkaline tummy. Alkaline foods cause an acid stomache. If you eat a lot of bread, rice, grains, etc. you will have reflux or an acid stomache. If you balance your diet with fruits and vegetables you will greatly reduce your chance of an acidic stomache. Find an acid alkaline food chart on google. There are quite a few. This explains why some people found relief from apples. It is an alkalizing fruit! So are beets, broccoli, carrots, etc. But be careful! Some fruits and vegees are acidifying like corn, lentils, blueberries, cranberries, canned fruits, plums, prunes, etc. That is why the chart is so important. I was a candidate for nexium and anti-acid pills. However, I changed my life by maintaining the acid alkaline diet. Please consider this. I've changed a lot of people's lives by sharing this information. However, a couple of my friends and family who have NOT taken this advice are now on anti-acid pills. Oh, by the way, fennel seed tea is a miracle worker for after dinner tummy calming. It helps to maintain an alkaline tummy. I need 2 cups to be helpful (I'm 144 lbs). Find the right dose for you. Best of luck!! Here's to your health!"

[YEA]  09/12/2007: Karen from Birmingham, Michigan writes: "ALMONDS: I had been taking aciphex for my acid reflux for over a year. After trying to lose weight with no success, I discovered over the internet that some people have a weight problem with aciphex. I stopped using it and decided to try a natural remedy that I used when I was pregnant and it works! It's real simple: plain almonds. I eat about 5 with breakfast and then eat a few each time I eat and I haven't felt my reflux. This was a remedy that a nurse told me about many years ago when I was pregnant with my first child, 1981. I'm so glad I remembered it. Just to let you know, I am a drinker of chlorinated tap water; (read below) but somehow that remedy makes sense, too. Oh, and by the way, I began to lose weight after stopping the aciphex!"

[YEA]  06/18/2008: Harley from South Windsor, Connecticut writes: "A week after a flu shot, I developed a virus, including a fever of 100 degrees(F) and extreme fatigue. Then, I started to experience a funny feeling in my chest when swallowing. This developed into intense pain to the point that I could only get down room temperature water.

Went to a walk-in clinic on the weekend (own MD not available) and told to take Prilosec OTC. Didn't do any good. Saw my MD who put me on Prevacid and sent me for a Barium swallow test and, later, an upper endoscopy. Acid Reflux was the diagnosis....first time ever. Two months of Prevacid (which did work but was costing $156/month) and my esophogus healed. I tried to wean myself off but started feeling the familiar pain so I kept on the Prevacid.

While researching natural cures I came across this web site and decided to try Aloe Vera Juice. The local Vitamin Shoppe carries several brands. I tried ____ brand of its digestive formula of Aloe Vera (bunch of other herbs etc). It's been two months and I have been pain free although I have to watch what and when I eat as well as chew my food completely instead of swallowing in a hurry..I eat way too fast. A quart of the Aloe Vera juice lasts one week and costs $10.95. I also tried the apple cider vinegar but it did not work for me.

I called my doctor and he told me to come pick up samples for other meds. I decided I was sick of the meds. so I went to my local Health foods store looking for answers. I still slept like crap that night. but the next day i took it. after the second time i took it my heartburn just went away. It hasent returned for 1 week. [YEA]  02/27/2007: Toni from Palm Desert, CA writes: "I have bouts of acid reflux, and am therefore intrigued by the Apple Cider Vinegar remedy. Like a number of the people who responded to your posting, I, too, ended up in the emergency room on more than one occasion surrounded by perplexed physicians. Since I won't take pharmaceuticals, I began experimenting with natural remedies, and have found that taking an ounce of Whole Leaf Aloe Vera Concentrate before each meal stops any unpleasant symptoms. Interestingly, aloe tastes a little like ACV. In addition to the aloe, I have found that chewing each mouth-full of (wholesome) food thoroughly before swallowing helps enormously. This takes much of the digestive burden off of the stomach. It's important to eat your meal slowly, chewing each bite of food until it's totally pulverized. Too many of us eat under stressful conditions, devouring our meal like it's the first we've seen in days. DGL-500 (deglycyrrhizinated licorice), Ayurved series, is also quite helpful when taken between meals or at bedtime. It helps to protect the stomach lining, and unlike regular licorice, will not elevate blood-pressure."

ANTIBIOTICS AND PEPTO BISMOL

[YEA]  04/09/2008: Joe from Helena, Mt writes: "One year ago, I had a dentist appointment-Infected tooth. I was prescribed an antibiotic. About a year previously, on the news, was a story about a researcher discovering that some bacteria in your stomach could not be killed by antiboitics alone. Antibiotics and the metal barium combined could kill those bacterica. That story, for some"strange reason", did not become part of the medical lore surrounding the agony of common people involved in the extremely expensive fight with ACID REFLUX. One year later, ten days of antibiotics, one and one half ounce of Pepto Bismol each of seven of those days--I am free of agonizing sleepless hours. I'm 67 Years old- probably 10 of which I have suffered with acid reflux. Try it. It cost Me about 15 bucks. It could cost those who profit from "acid reflux" billions - Think for yourself! Good Luck. [YEA]  01/19/2008: Fred from Rowland, PA writes: "Thank you so much for these remedies. I've just spent a miserable week with sporadic stomach spasms turning into constant spasms and a flaming, burning pit in my stomach. I drank cider with slippery elm, olive oil and grapefruit juice, took TUMS, drank club soda...I did eveything natural because I didn't wat to go to the doctor for the little purple pill Nexium. While writhing in pain, I did a search on acid reflux and natural remedies. I found your site and I used remedy #3 with vinegar, honey, aloe and baking soda. I gulped the concoction down and despite the usual horrendous spasms I had endured all week, I knew something was different because I didn't barf immediately (I wasn't able to keep food or water down). Miraculously, within 2 hours I was myself again with only a periodic spasm or two. Thank you so much for your website. I'll recommend this remedy and site to anyone in need."

[YEA]  05/16/2007: Dee from Fairfax, VA writes: "I'd been having terrible heartburn for over a week. So bad that that my kids and husband were very worried. A few years ago I had six ulcers! But didn't want to start the standard gastro treatments lansoprazole or purple pills - I'm well aware of the downsides to them. My gastric problem was probably caused by my ADHD, I frequently forget to eat because I get so hyperfocused I don't notice I'm hungry! So, I went looking for a homeopathic cure and found your website. I read a whole bunch of stuff and probably confused one thing with another nevertheless this is what happened: I made the ACV mixture adding the Baking Soda also 2 tbsp Aloe juice; 1 tbsp of organic honey; 1 tbsp of'Coconut Oil (using warm water, which melts the honey and VCO). I tried with and without the VCO and for those who find the ACV drink unpalatable the VCO helps alot! The heartburn stopped in 24 hours! Major miracle. I felt focused, relaxed, energetic and pain free. The only side effect of note was/is gas. Is this from the VCO? Is there anything I can do about that? And is it OK to blend all this together? Should I be drinking it before or after or with a meal? I don't know about the other magical effects of VCO its only been 2 days! Thanks for this great site, its already helped me a lot!"

[NAY]01/18/2008: James from Houston, TX replies: "Hi I have occasional acid refulx and my wife has it severe at times. DO NOT TAKE ACV for Acid Reflux! It just doesn't make any sense.  Acid Reflux is an Acid - you neutralize Acids with Bases (Alkaline).

pH less than 7 = Acidic, pH > 7 = Basic (Alkaline).  Vinegar pH = 3ish
An antacid is any substance, generally a base, which counteracts stomach acidity. In other words, antacids are stomach acid neutralizers.  I truly believe that adding an ACID to your stomach to reduce Stomach Acid is the wrong approach.  You should add a BASE like baking soda.  Rolaids & Tums are both Calcium Carbonate.  Alka-Seltzer is Soduim BiCarbonate.  Baking Soda = Sodium BiCarbonate.  In the duodenum, gastric acid is neutralized by sodium bicarbonate.  So Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) is used internally by the body to naturally regulate stomach Acid.  The equation is HCl NaHCO3 → NaCl H2CO3.  HCL = HydroChloric (Stomach) acid
NaHC03 = Baking Soda.

Just add a little bit of baking soda to some water, swirl it around, and drink it.  Within a few minutes you will belch.  The belch is the gas released when the baking soda neutralizes your stomach acid (or if its crept into your throat it will neutralize it there).  You will feel much better immediately.  Baking Soda is completely safe.

Why would you ever want to add an acid (vinegar) to another acid (HCL) with the hopes of reducing acid?  That doesn't make any sense.

Vinegar is acetic acid (CH3COOH).  Some of these recipies recommend you add Baking Soda to ACV.  When vinegar is added to sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), it produces a volatile mixture of carbonic acid rapidly decomposing into water and carbon dioxide bubbles, making the reaction "fizz". It is exemplified as the typical acid-base reaction in school science experiments. The salt that is formed is sodium acetate. Basically, this little experiment proves that its better to just take baking soda.  The Vinegar is the acid and the Baking Soda is the base.  The Baking Soda neutralizes the acid.  Its the same way in your stomach, just add the Baking Soda and it will neutralize the acid.  All you need is about a teaspoon of baking soda in an ounce or two of water.  Problem solved immediately.

Good luck and I hope this helps."

03/01/2008: John from Duluth, Minnesota replies: "I read a message from James from Houston who took issue with using acid (apple cider vinegar) to fight stomach acid (HCl). It should be noted that vinegar is classified as a "weak" acid whereas HCl is a strong acid.  In spite of the fact that both are acids, a weak acid will still react with a strong acid and diminish the acidity.  The final result may not rise above the pH of the weak acid, but it is a significant improvement over the pH of the strong acid."

03/02/2008: Harvinder from Tokyo, Japan replies: "This is regarding mesages from John from Duluth, Minnesota and James from Houston. I, too, was very confused about using vinegar, an obvious acid, to alkalize the body or neutralize acid reflux.

It is what happens to the vinegar once it goes into the body that needs to be understood (as pointed out by Ted earlier). There, in a healthy body, it combines with minerals to produce an alkaline compound. When I test my urine with a pH strip after taking AVC it shows alkaline (around 7.2 or more). So, though I consumed an acid, my body converted it to a base. The same happens after eating citrus fruit. You expect your body to become more acidic but it acutally becomes more alkaline! However, things like coffee will remain acidic in the body: I see my urine pH plunge to below 5.0 after consuming coffee."

03/04/2008: John from Niagara Falls, NY replies: "DISAGREEMENT, DISAGREEMENT! To James from Houston: Acid Reflex can be on different levels.  I have been told that some people produce an overabundance of acid and some do not produce enough.  I myself have an acid reflex issue, due to a Hiatal Hernia.  Vinegar works for me as my doctor has indicated that my stomach does not produce enough acid.  Taking vinegar and relieving my reflex would make sense.  I no longer take Nexium, due to side effects and use vinegar or nothing at all.  I have tried changing my diet, but nothing seems to work.  I try not to eat late evening as it is very difficult to sleep.  I have used Cider Vinegar and Vinegar.  Both work for me.  The after taste is somewhat of an annoyance, but it is worth it."

04/23/2008: Wendy from Bellingham, WA replies: "Response to James from Houston: I'm a nursing student. My mom always drinks pickle juice when she has heart burn and reflux, which is obviously vinagar. Anyway, I could never understand that considering vinagar is acidic, right? Well, I asked my professor how pickle juice works. He told me that when you add MORE acids to the stomach, the acid pumps in the stomach turn off because no more acid is needed. However, when you take antacids, the antacids desolve the acid that's presently in the stomach to provide quick relief, but then the stomach quickly turns the pumps on to replenish the acids. And you may notice that after a few weeks, just one antacid no longer does the trick. You need two or three to get the same relief because your stomach pumps are working overtime to replenish those lost acids. The moral of this story? It's healthier and safer to add more acids to the stomach to naturally turn off those acid pumps than it is to take away those much needed acids from the stomach. Vinagar, or pickle juice, is a better choice."

Apples only subdue the acid for a short while for me... don't get me wrong, they are better than any acid medication I have tried. I think I actually just have something wrong with my esophagus (however it's spelt). I normally try to eat an apple in anticipation of my acid reflux and I always eat one when I feel the pangs of acid at my throat. However, after a month of doing this I'm still suffering. I have cut down my diet to the point where I've cut out all caffein, all alcohol, all flour based foods, all dairy based foods, red meat (I read somewhere that that was bad) and I'm basically juest eating fresh fruit and vegetables (no citric acids).

I only eat small meals frequently and never before I go to bed. I even angled my bed so that I sleep in a slightly up right position and when I do sleep I sleep on my left (I also read that somewhere, something to do with the position of the stomach). I think I've tried everything unless anyone has some amazing miracle cure that they're not sharing with the world.

Regards, Robbie."
