[YEA]  06/07/2007: Jillian from Lake Macquarie, Australia writes: "My daughter had severe acid reflux & was medicated for 2 years, but was in severe pain, & frequently vomited. She is now drug free & symptom free. Please tell Melissa from Tampa Fl to use the acv after a meal, but also to eat an apple, (even 1/2) before bed. These simple remedies changed my daughters life. We don't know why the apple works but it is fantastic. The problem with a lot of reflux is not too much acid but not enough, hence the acv aids digestion. This was the case with my daughter. She had bad breath and nausea. The food in her stomach was not being digested, it was just sitting ther rotting. I note with interest your advice to take 1/4 tspn b soda with acv. Will definitely add this to the mix. Thanks Jillian NSW Australia "

[YEA]  05/18/2007: Cally from Downsville, Louisiana writes: "I suffered with acid reflux for YEARS! I was terrified to go anywhere without a big supply of Tums. During my life I have had 9 surgeries and taken antibiotics for many things, and I assume this is what messed me up. I refused to get on a prescription acid inhibitor for obvious reasons. One day I had reflux very badly - hurting, belching bubbles of acid. Nothing helped, not even the Tums. About that time my grandchildren showed up with some baggies of apple slices to snack on and I ate some of them. Instant relief, I kid you not! No pain, no acid, no bitter taste. I then talked to my niece, about what I considered was a miracle - the simple apple. She has a background in nursing and exercise physiology, but was at that time selling products for a place which carried a probiotic. She ordered it for me and told me it would restore my intestinal flora that the antibiotics had destroyed, and which was the root of my problem. I took the capsules she ordered for me- called Primal Defense. I took one bottle over a period of 2.5 months and I have not had ANY gastric upsets or acid. I now make sure that I do not run out of the probiotic, or fresh apples. I have added other RAW vegetables to my diet and eat them on a daily basis - mainly organic carrots, red cabbage, spinach. I can't tell you what the raw fruits and vegetables and the probiotic have done for me. I was so miserable all the time, and now I am 100% free of the misery. Meat, dairy products, sugar, drugs, all those things cause acid to build up. This I learned from my niece. Also, apple cider vinegar is made two ways, one is acid and vinegarry, the one that is normally sold in the vinegar department of the grocery store, and the other is one that is CONSIDERED vinegarry, Bragg's apple cider vinegar, but in fact it is alkaline to the body. Be careful you don't get the wrong apple cider vinegar."

[YEA]  06/14/2006: Dee from Middlesbrough, England writes: "Forgot to let you know -- Jonagold apples are the best for acid reflux because they are highest in pectin."

03/13/2009: Sheila from Crewkerne, Somerset, UK replies: "In response to your posting. I will try jonogold apples. but I have been eating Pink Lady apples for a long while, these do not help with my dreadful reflux. It is so bad sometimes I feel faint and have to lie down. Also on the american comments they mention acv (or something) do you know what that is?? Does their 'baking powder' mean the same as ours, or do they mean bi-carb. Although bi-carb does nothing for me at all. AN IMPORTANT POINT - TOO MUCH ACID AND TOO LITTLE ACID GIVE OFF THE SAME SYMPTOMS - SO HOW DO YOU TELL. I would welcome any comments. Thank you. I hope you are cured now. Sheila in England."

EC: ACV = apple cider vinegar

Janelle from Brisbane, Australia clarified the baking soda/bi-carb issue for us in 2007: "...In Australia and England (it seems) we don't refer to a product called Baking Soda. We call it Bicarb Soda. I think some people outside the US are getting confused because we also have Baking Powder which is a different product, usually Wheat/Corn flour with added Mineral Salts. Bicarb Soda is definately Sodium Bicarbonate and is the correct product."

[YEA]  05/06/2006: Lura from CA writes: "I ate a mini red small apple from Trader Joe's that actually seemed to make my GERD worse. But on days I ate other kinds of apples I don't recall having too many problems. I just ate some red delicious apples and didn't have any problems."

[YEA]  04/23/2006: Carlos from Baltimore writes: "I am so glad I found your website. Last year I started developing some strange food sensitivities and terrible dizziness and fatigue. After numerous doctor visits and many many tests I was diagnosed with acid reflux! I was taking aleve for joint pain and levaquin for an infection and my health started going downhill fast. I started taking Prilosec & Zantac and noticed remarkable improvement for a few weeks, but then my heartburn and problems swallowing got worse than ever! One day I noticed that a nice crunchy green apple helped my GERD considerably, and now I can't live without 2-3 green apples a day. I'm going to try that apple cider vinegar too - antacids are just like painkillers, they don't attack the real problem they just try to minimize complications without addressing the source. Thanks for the info!"

I was at my wits end thankfully I came across your web site and read with interest about acv. some time ago after having an attack of acid I ate an apple (cox) this did at the time help my acid on reflection. not connecting the two things at the time I simply forgot until i came across your web page. I now take a slice of apple or two after a meal and wonder of wonders no acid!!!"

[YEA]  10/05/2005: Tomm S from Indpls, IN writes: "I stumbled onto your site thru a lot of searching for relief because I've come to believe that there isn't a cure for Acid Reflux! I'm yet to try the ACV thing but for now I will stand on my aide. A simple slice from an apple. Any color. I've noticed that the vinegar suggested here also is to be "Apple." Try it and I guarantee that you will be amazed."

[YEA]  Parag from India writes: "I have tried this and it works. I am a singer and acid reflux is really a curse if u r a singer. But lately I have started eating some apple slices before going to bed. And it helps a lot. But the main thing is to have 5-7 small meals during the day instead having 3 large meals and eat at regular periods. Don't have late nights. and this will help to cure acid reflux a lot. than u can try other things like ACV or whatever works for u. But always try something natural instead of medicines. I myself tried taking anti-acid pills for months. But it won't cure the problem completely and worse, the day u stop taking pills, it will come back with a vengeance. so I stopped taking pills from many months now. And try to be regular with my sleep and meals and also workout regularly. It has helped."

AVOID ALCOHOL

1 WORKED TEMPORARILY

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  01/02/2010: Mike from Perth, Western Australia writes: "I found the best cure for reflux is to stay off the piss!! Probably the most unrealistic remedy, considering I play in a band but it does help. Consequently I still get it real bad thats why Im on the net trying to find an alternative to my favourite past time!"

EC: To our US readers who might not have heard this phrase, "stay off the piss" means "stay away from alcohol"!

01/02/2010: Dj from Pdx, Or replies: "Mike,

Try taking 1 or 2 activated charcoal tablets prior to drinking (or is the correct term prior to getting pissed) lol...

You can try drinking a fiber drink prior to as well as that will coat your stomach but I am not so sure that will work.

If you do get your acid all stired up you can drink a tsp (or 4)of baking soda in a little water to combat it.

I hope you get to enjoy your favorite past time again soon with no pain."

AVOID CAFFEINE

1 YEA

[YEA]  06/15/2010: Jane from Steamboat Springs, Colorado writes: "Acid Reflux - Beware of Caffeine!

I was diagnosed with GERD at age 44 and like so many of you I tried Nexium and Prilosec with minimal relief. Basically the meds just masked the symptoms. The reflux was severe making me miserable and I was losing weight I could not afford to lose; my clothes were baggy and I looked gaunt. I researched online and learned about dietary triggers. One of the biggest triggers is caffeine. Also, deep-fried foods don't digest well in the stomach, so I cut them out of my diet. Some sauces like tomato or certain dressings can also bring about reflux. Finally, large meals leaving you overly stuffed, can activate reflux.

People, pay attention to what you eat and take note of foods that trigger your reflux. I have had my reflux under control for five years now, am back to a healthy weight and enjoy decaffeinated coffee and tea daily even chocolate. For me caffeine hands down was the worst trigger. If I have any symptoms in future, I will most certainly try apple cider vinegar."

AVOID STEAK

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/26/2010: Dianec from Los Angeles, Ca. writes: "Hello, In my 20's I had a constant case of Acid Reflux. I never had this problem anymore since I gave up
beef steaks. The only beef I can eat without problem is ground beef. This works for me.

Thanks DianeC"

06/11/2010: Erin from Tampa, Fl replies: "I've got to agree with this, to an extent. Every time I eat something with fried beef in it, I get terrible gas, the shooting pains kind, even if the beef is extra lean browned in olive oil. OTH, I can tolerate a small lean steak cooked on the grill, so long as the rest of the meal is nonfat. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way the fat in the red meat reacts to certain cooking methods."

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/24/2009: Nate from New Orleans, LA writes: "Hey, I tried everyting from this site. I was on Aciphex and Malox. This helped but did not cure anything. Then I saw these emails about apples and apple cider viniger. I have been taking apples for months before I read this. It did not help. Applecider vineger did not help. Probiotics did not help.

So what did? One guy posted here saying that Acid Reflux is a B12 deficiency. I had liquid B12 and put it under my tongue. Within 30 minutes I felt relief when I was previously having a bad reaction. I also had a nuropethy thing going on in my scalp that started after I got on blood pressure meds. My head tingled as my sinuses got bad. Even this partially but significantly went away. Not completely but a significant change. Much relief. 5 days later, I am feeling even better. I have to take B12 daily under my tongue but major results. Better than when I was on Aciphex. I feel that I will be cured in a few weeks as long as I stay on B12. I hope this helps some of you."

[YEA]  04/04/2008: Christine from Virginia Beach, USA writes: "Acid reflux is often caused by a Vitamin B12 deficiency. Since you need B12 to make enough intrisic factor and enzymes to absorb it, perhaps just taking ACV will help you absorb Vitamin B12 better.

Nevertheless, I have found that as long as I take 4 B12 dots (500 mcg) under the tongue once a day, I am fine. When I don't, the reflux comes right back."

Last night I had such an attack of gastric acid reflux I thought I was going to have a heart attack and die. I am not exaggerating. I tried everything ice, tums, milk.... Then I went on line and googled your site. I tried the baking soda 1/4 tsp in 8 oz of water and what a difference. WOW I am singing your praises today. Did sleep upright in the recliner finally got some sleep. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Why hasn't a doctor told me this before? Today I do have some chest congestion ( I think I got some acid in my lungs) but what a difference. I have bookmarked your site and will be here again. Thanks so much!!!"

[YEA]  02/06/2010: Thepointedhat from Sacramento, Ca, Usa writes: "I, too, have used baking soda (Bicarb Soda) as a remedy for acid reflux. As opposed to adding it to a full glass of water, however, I add 1/8 teaspoon to approximately 2 ounces of water, and top with two drops of peppermint essential oil. I can then down it in one go. The peppermint oil helps disguise the taste of the soda, and has the added benefit of also being a natural remedy for indigestion and heartburn - hence its use in a certain, pink, chalky liquid I'm sure we're all familiar with.

Since discovering this remedy, I've stopped buying commercial antacids altogether. Baking soda is so much more effective - and budget friendly, too!"

[YEA]  02/19/2009: Krisstyle from Compton, Ca writes: "I was on EC site on the 18th. I had a co-worker tell me about the baking soda awhile back but I never tried it. I read some testimonials and I tried it last night because I always get it so bad in the morning. Ted said thats when the acid acts up. But I declare, I drink half a glass of alkaline water with half tsp of baking soda 15 min before I went to bed and this morning was the best. I went to urinate for atleast 2 min. I kid you not and I didn't sit during the night. I definitly will keep you posted. Thanks"

11/26/2009: Robert from Palm Coast, Florida replies: "Taking two little teaspoons of Baking Soda stirred very well eliminate the acid buildup in your stomach and can relieve the Belching and the burning in your stomach. IT DOES NOT CURE acid reflux, but especially around Thanksgiving you can actually get some sleep during the night and not take fizzy things that only relieve it for a few minutes. Baking soda dissolved very well! It really helps the ACID reflux!"

11/27/2009: Andrea Dixon from Chico, Ca replies: "You can also drink club soda."

Now honestly I do not have any symptons I drank southern comfort last night for the first time in years. [YEA]  10/25/2006: Len from Chicago, IL writes: "I had astounding relief from ACV at first but sometimes it doesn't help. It seems like I need to maintain a balance of acidity. So I still use ACV once in a while. I use 1/2 teaspoon of Baking Soda to 4 ounces of water in the evening, helps a lot. I seem to get some help from Melatonin occasionally. There is a study on the net that showed success with Melatonin but the dosage is still being debated. If I wake up with pain I immediately take some Alkaseltzer in water which provides the best quick relief. These things are allowing me to live with this. Of course I don't eat after 7:00 PM. Best wishes, Len."

01/18/2009: Hector Vargas from Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia replies: "I just wanted to ask Len to check the ingredients of Alkaseltzer --Basically, baking soda and aspirin. I believe that aspirin does more harm than good to the stomach. Perhaps the baking soda alone would do a better job. More economically, too.

Thank you all for the comments on the site. They're very helpful. Hector"

[YEA]  08/30/2006: Hazel writes: "A pinch of Bi-Carbonate of Soda mixed with diluted orange juice or fruit juice as it will make the Bi-Carbonate of Soda fizz, when it does you need to drink it straight away, I have been using this for acid indigestion for the last 20 years and have found it to work every time. BAKING SODA AND WATER, LOSE WEIGHT

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/27/2007: Todd from Salt Lake City, Utah writes: "I have found two things that take away my acid reflux. First is baking soda and water. I see some of the cures talks about combining vinegar with baking soda. I can't imagine this would help. Combine the two in a kitchen sink, its a mess. The second solution is loose 10 lbs. For some reason when I loose 10 lbs. and get down to what I should weigh I dont suffer from it half as much. Thats what has helped me."

06/22/2008: Catherine from Toronto, Ontario replies: "The reason you may suffer less acid reflux when you lose weight is because you are probably eating less acidic foods such as pop or sugary snacks. These foods are a very common cause of acid reflux."
