CARRI'S REMEDIES FOR GERD

1 YEA

[YEA]  08/11/2008: Carri from Lake Forest, California writes: "My husband was on proton pumb inhibitors for GERD, Prilosec being one of them. From my reading of nutrition books and alternative medicine I know how dangerous it is to have your stomuch and bowels out of whack and how it effects the rest of your health. So I zealously urged my husband to get off his medicine and that I would find some way that would work. I googled natural cures for GERD and gathered info from different sites(without having to buy their products) and we tried all the different things we found. Plus I also put him on a low carb high protein diet. It took a few months but he no longer has stomuch pain and the GERD is gone!
From what I can remember here's what he took.

DGL (deglycerized licorice)
Lemonene (or something like that)
Digestive enzymes
probiotics
NO coffee (until GERD is completely gone!)
Acid defense by garden of life and a few other things we found in health food stores.
In Protein Power (the book) they claim that the diet cures GERD, so we also did that and my husband lost 35 lbs too.

I'm not sure exactly what cured him because we threw everything at him and it worked! Don't blindly believe everything doctors or even well meaning friends and family say. There are cures for many things if we learn to work with our body instead of trying to suppress it's natural functions through the many pharmaceuticals the docs are throwing at us."

CAYENNE

2 YEA

[YEA]  07/04/2007: Bruce from Lake City , Florida USA writes: "On the subject of acid reflux and heartburn, I have all but eliminated it after 20 or so years of suffering. I used to keep a large bottle of Tums with me at all times. The acid reflux was horrible, waking me up in bed with searing pain in my throat and gasping for air, not knowing if this would be the end. The choking went on for half an hour or more. Milk, more Tums, water, juice, nothing gave instant relief. Like magic, after about three months, I had lost almost all of the symtoms of the acid reflux and heartburn. You can cure yourself easily if you are determined. It will take perseverence and patience and will gradually go from bad to good in three months or so. Cayenne Pepper is the answer! Now on a regular basis I take from one to two heaping tablespoons of granulated cayenne with my meals. Not on any cereal though! Usually if you can start off with a litle and work up to a large dose like I did, it will become easy and things after a while will not seem to taste right without it. I am so happy I don't use Tums anymore and I don't have stomach problems. I would encourage anyone to read about "cayenne pepper healing effects." Do a Google search and you will be surprised at what you read about its healing effects. I get my cayenne from a wholesale club in bulk containers. I use Tone's ground cayenne pepper and it is about $4.00 for a 1 LB container. That should last you about six months or more. Good luck and remember, you will have to get used to the heat or it won't work. In addition to taking the cayenne pepper, don't go to sleep on a full stomach. Give it 3 or 4 hours before you go to sleep. Bruce N. Strnad"

CELERY

2 YEA

[YEA]  06/02/2009: Sammi from Flowery Branch, Ga writes: "I have learned a lot after reading all of your comments. This is the first time I have seen this web site and reading it mentioned in passing on Dr. Mercola's web site. My husband used to get acid reflux painfully bad, but after he gave up drinking quarts of tea a day (hey, he's a southern boy!), he very rarely gets it. He avoids bad eating, but sometimes (and it's usually some kind of fast food) he weakens and pays for it. He used to use baking soda, but found it was slow to work and sometimes didn't. Our son-in-law has BAD problems with it and found only eating celery (don't know if he knows about the other recommendations) could fix it. Hubby tried celery and has stuck with it as it works on the rare occasions now when he's affected. I can't get him to try the ACV. He thinks my son and I are crazy using it. Thanks for this site and all the fine input."

06/03/2009: michelle from Cambridge, UK replies: "Dear Sammi, I have been eating almonds with every meal, before, after, or during the meal, for the last six months, and they have completely taken my acid reflux away. I think they work because they are alkaline.( I found this advice on this site )

I took 5 per meal to start with, then dropped to 2 after the meal, but at night I tend to eat a bit more, so sometimes need none if my meal is very alkaline, ( ie. lettuce , avocado and lemon juice ) or 15-20 if I eat late and heavily ! They ALWAYS WORK !"

[YEA]  09/14/2006: Nancy from Agoura Hills, CA writes: "I have used H2 and PP blockers. I find that celery makes me feel better quickly. It probably increases the rate at which the stomach empties. It helps move things along, I think. I plan to try your home remedies. I'll let you know how it works."

CELL SALTS

1 YEA

[YEA]  12/26/2007: Janine from Brisbane, Australia writes: "I had acid reflux during my first pregnancy and had some relief with over the counter alkalizers. This pregnancy I didn't want to alkalize my stomach acid so I can digest effectively - but I still needed some relief. My naturopath recommended nat phos, the cell salt (also called SP or sodium phosphate) which is working very well, at least as well as antacids without the worry of poor digestive side effects or aluminium additives. Be sure to chew the tablet, or dissolve it in warm water."

CHAMOMILE TEA

3 YEA

[YEA]  03/13/2009: Lu from Brisbane, Australia writes: "GERD (gastritis/esophagitis/reflux): I had lots of pain in my esophagus and stomach lining. I tried all the traditional things such as Nexium, Zantac, Pariet, etc and also alternatives such as acupuncture and Chinese herbs, cider vinegar etc. nothing worked. One day I read on the Net that someone got relief from cold Chamomile tea. I bought some organic Chamomile tea bags and within days of taking it the pain began subsiding. I take it 3 times a day. Add a tea bag to boiling water, let it cool and drink it. I have now stopped all medication.

Research on the Net indicates that it is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-histamine, muscle relaxant and much more. Anyone wanting relief from GERD should definitely try it."

[YEA]  02/20/2007: JohnnieLou from Lawton, OK writes: "I had suffered from severe reflux for months. Nothing seemed to help. While surfing the internet, I found some information about chamomile tea helping with reflux. I bought the green tea with chamomile and started drinking it at the first sign of reflux and always about an hour before bedtime. The chamomile tea helped immediately and I no longer have reflux. I guess Peter Rabbit's Mom knew what she was doing when she gave him chamomile tea and put him to bed after he ate too much in Mr. McGregor's garden! Regular chamomile works as well as the green tea/chamomile combination."

[YEA]  01/30/2007: Toma from Chicago, IL writes: "I talked to my practitioner recently, and he told me that Apple Cider Vinegar is good only for those people who have high acidity; for those who have low acidity it can be harmful. He told me the least harmful remedy for Acid Reflux and other stomach problems is CAMOMILE TEA. I tried it, and it works wonders."

CHEW SLOWLY

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/02/2009: Heidi from Ogden, UT writes: "About acid reflux, I didn't see this cure anywhere: chewing food thoroughly before swallowing, and stopping when just barely full (not stuffed)

I used to have heartburn every night, even with drinking just water (my system is already acid, and ACV made it worse when I tried it)...well I adopted a way of eating where every bite is chewed at least 30 times...haven't had heartburn since, even when I haven't had the time to chew that slowly."

CHINESE MEDICINE

2 YEA

[YEA]  11/05/2009: Liz from Seattle, Wa. writes: "Am 70 and have acid reflux for years. Got herbs from the Chinese doc and things are better. If you think that you might have ulcers, cranberry juice is great. I drink it with soda water to make it more palatable - no sugar. Find that sugar really starts the acid reflux. As long as I avoid it, I'm good. Also Health food stores have some good digestion teas that help."

[YEA]  01/09/2007: Heather from Portland, OR writes: "Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs: Remarkable decrease in symptoms, but I still have not been able to get off my prescribed prevacid. I've been on it for 5 years. I started reading your site for helpful information, but came away somewhat confused and frustrated. There are just so many testimonials with a dizzying amount of yay's & ney's... it actually left me feeling less hopeful than when I arrived. I've been using acupuncture & chinese herbs to help curb my GERD. I've reduced my Prevacid from 30mg once a day, to 15mg every other day. Acupuncture is a great stress reliever, so that's probably one of the reasons I find relief. The Chinese herbs I take is a formula Coptis & Evodia which you can research on the internet. One piece of information I did find helpful, was the link between pain medication and GERD. My GERD developed shortly after a 15-day hospital stay in which I was on a morphine pump that delivered a dose of morphine every 3 minutes. (I had a complication to a gallbladder removal surgery.) My theory has been that large doses of antibiotics & the lack of gallbladder & the bile it produced left my stomach vulnerable to H. pylori & unable to digest food properly. However, now reading about the pain medication theory - that would make sense too."

CHLORELLA

1 YEA

[YEA]  07/19/2008: Vicki from Ranger, Georgia writes: "Recently I tried Chlorella for my acid reflux. I was amazed when the pain stopped within a short time. This is truly the best remedy I have found for acid reflux. I bought the powder and take about two thirds of a teaspoon to cure acid reflux. Safe and effective."

CINNAMON

1 YEA

[YEA]  09/18/2006: Mercedes from Long Beach, WA writes: "I was reading your cure for acid reflux - ACV - and wanted to add one of my own. Cinnamon sticks simmered in water for about 20 minutes or until they make a 'tea'. I put 6 sticks in a regular size stove top kettle. Drink hot or cold - usually a juice glass full will remove acid reflux instantly, if not repeat. It ALWAYS works!! Also delicious! Many other health benefits too!"

COCONUT OIL

3 YEA

[YEA]  04/16/2008: Vi from West Covina, CA writes: "Extra virgin coconut oil is the only thing that cured my acid reflux. I tried everything including tums and apple cider vinegar. The only side effect is that you will drop about 10 pounds in a month and I think the majority of people might like that. It's been about three weeks since I've taken the coconut oil and so far no sign of the acid reflux."

06/02/2008: Trista from Seattle, Washington replies: "I would like to know more details about the coconut oil remedy. What was your regime and what kind of oil etc?"

06/03/2008: Baldev from Mumbai, India replies: "Acid Reflux(ailment). You have not written as to how do you take the coconut oil. How many times a day, how much and with what? "

07/02/2008: Karina from San Francisco , California replies: "Can you please provide details on what brand coconut oil (extra virgin CO). How much to take it and when (before/with/after meals)? Thank you."

12/07/2009: Barry from Bellefontaine, Ohio replies: "I have been using coconut oil and just eating it. The protocol I began had you ramping up to 5 tablespoons per day 1 with each meal and 1 between meals. I was using it for a candida cleanse, but it is good for so much more. I also found when I was eating raw garlic, the coconut oil soothed the occasional upset stomach from the spicier garlics. I enjoyed the brand that I used, and I have read many that have been dissatisfied with their brands. I understand I cannot put brand names here, but look around, my wife found that for me based on their quality."

[YEA]  06/05/2006: Pinoy Ako from Phillipines writes: "I am still observing its effect: Taking Virgin Coconut Oil after meal (1TB after every meal = 3x daily) appears to relieve the production of phlegm associated with gastric reflux. I take my last one an hour before going to bed, and wakes up in better condition than when not taking it. Please note that the coconut oil has to be cold-pressed process, hence, it's called Virgin Coconut Oil, which also lowers cholesterol and boosts immunity. DO NOT consume non-virgin coco oil--that will clog your arteries!"

08/29/2008: Anjali from New Delhi, India replies: "I am not clear about the type of coconut oil to be used. In india we have numerous brands of coconut oil in market. Can u suggest any to use in such cases. Please clarify."

[YEA]  05/28/2006: June from Adelaide South Australia writes: "After reading on this site the positive comments regarding coconut oil, I managed to purchase some excellent C/oil on May 6th, started taking 1 x tbsn. each meal, although I did miss at times. My indigestion/reflux disappeared almost immediately as did my desire for coffee and alcohol. I am also using it externally. As it is only three weeks ago that I started I will wait to give a report on my hair, skin etc. If anyone would like to know the name of the company I purchased from, I can give it. It is important to know exactly the quality you use."

CPAP MACHINE

1 YEA
1 NAY

[YEA]  12/14/2007: Nancy from Newton, NC writes: "After years of severe acid reflux that no medicine helped, including Nexium, my doctor convinced me to have a sleep study. After being diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea I started using a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure). It took about a year for my esophagus to heal, but I never ever have acid reflux anymore. My pulmonologist explained that the struggle for breath was squeezing the contents of my stomach up my esophagus all night. I used to sit up in a recliner all night rarely getting any sleep. I now sleep all night laying down flat. It was an adjustment getting accustomed to the CPAP but it is worth its weight in gold. My GERD had absolutely nothing to do with what I was eating nor with overproduction of gastric acid."

[NAY]  09/05/2008: Dixie from Birmingham, AL replies: "The CPap Machine: I have add GERD for so many years I can't remember. I need to lose weight. I know this. I have also been diagnosed with apnea. I got the machine, and vanity wouldn't allow me to use it correctly. Vanity is no good if you can't get restful sleep. I hope it works as good as it did for you. I have to take 80mg of Nexium daily. My ins only covers (1) daily so I have to try to get samples to cover the rest. I have an appt with my dr in late Sept. I am willing to try anything."

CUCUMBERS

1 YEA

[YEA]  06/14/2007: John from San Francisco East Bay Area, California writes: "Acid reflux & indigestion eliminated immediately with organic cucumber. Got tired of taking 1 to 3 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar. Thus, began eating 1/3 organic cucumber at night in bed on back whenever acid reflux or burning sensation in esophagus or stomach. Purchased at Berkeley Bowl Marketplace. Burping & immediate elimination of acid reflux and indigestion. Perhaps the OACV began the healing and all that was needed to continue healing was the organic cucumber. Ergo, the British cucumber sandwich is a great idea from decades or centuries ago."

DETOX AM TEA

1 YEA

[YEA]  Liz from Hudson, Florida writes: "I'had been on every med. out there for acid reflux and I stumbled upon this tea. I was looking in a store for slimfast for a diet. I was in great pain that day with acid reflux. Next to the slimfast was this box of Detox Tea and no other teas around. I picked it up and decided to buy it just because...no real reason. I made the tea when I got home and my heart burn disappeared with that cup of tea. It was very strange that I even bought it but I think it was there for me on the shelf...put there by an angel. I made the next cup stronger and started having a cup in the morning and a cup at night. No more acid reflux. I was due for surgery because acid eroded my esophagus so badly. I told my doctor I did not want the surgery. He did not like my explanation that the tea stopped my acid reflux. I did have the surgery a few weeks later but the tea DID take my very bad reflux away. I recommend it to anyone and have even written the company about how it helped me....along with the Angel who put it on the shelf for me to see and buy."

09/12/2009: Videomaven from Burbank, California replies: "Dear Liz from Hudson, Florida........Would like the name of your Detox Tea. I am willing to try anything to get off these pump inhibitors. I canno take omperzole because of some conflict with my heart meds. Zantac is sorta working and the Protonics they wanted me to take make me sick. Hopefully, this tea would do the trick. Many thanks.....Videomaven from Burbank, CA BASCOT@prodigy.net"

DETOXIFICATION DIET

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/06/2009: Lynn from Cape Town, South Africa writes: "Acid Reflux - I have put on a considerable amount of weight since I turned 40 (I am not 45). I have found it hard to lose the weight and have excrutiating acid reflux, flatulence, strong urine and constant bouts of low blood pressure. I decided that I was not well and needed to do something and researched the internet and found the Hallejah diet. However, I just wanted to detox as a starting point and wasn't completely happy with the diet as I understood from reputable sources that a vegetarian diet only is not healthy. However, the detoxing itself .. eating only veggies and fruit for at least 5 days resulted in all of my problems disappearing.. and this was because my PH balance was too acidic. So my advice is DETOX to achieve at least a 7.0 PH balance."

2 QUESTIONS

[YEA]  12/10/2009: Paul from Lansing, Mi writes: "About 10 years ago, I went to my doctor with complaints of heartburn. Refered to specialist. Scoped and diagnosed acid reflux. Presciption. I asked the doctor if I would be taking this the rest of my life, he said yes. I determined that I would not. After 3 months and 3 different precriptions that made me feel worse I quit taking them. Felt better right away, but still had heartburn sometimes. I now know in my case it is chocolate. Just a small amount can make me feel like i'm having a heart attack hours later. Experiment, don't let them put you on a lifetime of prescriptions that will make you sicker."

[QUESTION]  09/08/2009: New To All This from La, Ca writes: "For laryngopharyngeal acid reflux, I must stick to small meals, stop eating 3 1/2 hours before lying down and avoid all fats. How then can I maintain my weight? Is the fat in nuts or avocadoes OK? I have been eating sunflower seeds and cashews because I have them around the house and they are fattening. What are good fattening foods, and how far apart should meals be taken?"

12/10/2009: Paul from Lansing, Mi replies: "Small meals every 2 to 3 hours works well for acid reflux and sugar problems. I mean small, 1 small to medium sandwich/ no fries or soda. Or a banana or apple. Common foods that can cause acid reflux : coffee, chocolate, peanuts, soda pop, spicy foods and for me banana right before bedtime. Try to eat mostly fruits and veggies, preferred raw but cooked is better than eating alot of red meat. Drink plenty of filtered or sping water."
