Bad Breath (Halitosis) Remedies
"Halitosis, oral malodor, breath odor, mouth odor, foul breath, fege bosta, fetor oris, fetor ex ore, or most commonly bad breath are terms used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing - whether the smell is from an oral source or not. Halitosis has a significant impact - personally and socially - on those who suffer from it or believe they do (halitophobia), and is estimated to be the third most frequent reason for seeking dental aid, following tooth decay and periodontal disease."

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "There are several possible causes for bad breath:
1. Cavities. One small cavity in the tooth with some food in there is one main cause. Get it capped.
2. Acidic body. Take 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon of citric acid twice a day. Get plenty of sleep so the body can restore the bicarbonate levels.
3. Brushing your teeth with sea salt powder on every part of the gums and every nook and cranny especially the back gums and teeth both inside and outside the jaws. Extremely important NOT to leave any stones unturned. Do this three times a day. Morning, Lunch and before sleep. If that doesn't work, brush with sodium perborate, use flossing, and prepare a 3% H2O2 mouthwash.
4. Lack of stomach acids. To drinking water add 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt per liter of water. Or take betaine HCl to restore the stomach acids. If foods are well digested, stomach acids should be eliminated.
5. Improper digestive system. Usually when constipation comes, it is obvious you will have bad breath. A simple remedy is to drink 1/4 teaspoon of Magnesium chloride everyday and eat more high fiber foods. Avoid all white flours, vegetable oils, margarine, canola oils, sugar. Eat millet or whole wheat. No pizzas, sandwiches, shakes, and ABSOLUTELY NO MILK. Milk will cause bad breath within minutes.
6. Improper blood sugar. If the body is high in blood sugar, just avoid all vegetable oils, fried foods, soda, high carbohydrate diets and take 9 mg. of biotin per day plus 1 teaspoon of granulated lecithin. This will help body get rid of excess fats and reduce the blood sugar. Vitamin D3 or D4 also works.
7. No late night meals! The digestive system doesn't work well in late evening!"
10/10/2009: Rich from Boca Raton, Fl replies: "I've had success with this one. Similar to Ted's steps 4 and 5. Increasing Chloride consumption seems to do the trick. I went with Morton's light salt, 50% NaCl, 50% KCl. I don't have dosing down, but a teaspoon a day in a glass of water seems to do the trick. 1/2 a teaspoon has an effect as well. Before bed seems more effective as well, but you can get results any time.
Regular salt seems to lead to water retention and bloating, whereas this one doesn't. I suspect Chloride activates the Sodium-Potassium pump... and NaCl alone may upset the Sodium Potassium Balance.
I've tried mixing 1/2 teaspoon Sodium Ascorbate with 1/2 teaspoon of this Salt with success as well; however, unclear if the Vit C is necessary... this helps with Sinus congestion as well, or if you feel a cold coming on."

I also give them a very small slice of cheese as bedtime snack.(make the slice long enough that they have to chew it a second and don't immediately swallow it, so it will coat the teeth.) The cheese has been proven to reduce tartar build up. How easy is that? Give yourself these treats too..same benefits!"

I always kept myself at least a meter away from my friends, not to mention about girls. I visited several dentists, but none couldn't tell any concrete solution. Recently, a dentist told me to wash my mouth, especially back of my tongue with a BAKING SODA before going to sleep and to take a pill, called Flunol. I washed my mouth with baking soda, but did not take the pill, as it was expensive. To my great surprise, it was enough to get rid of the bad breath. Within ten days, it is almost gone. I still can't believe it and just before writing this message, I checked it, putting my finger in the back of my tongue. it's gone. I know there are many people with the same problem and i want to say those people not to spend much money on those expensive pills and liquids. Instead, look for a cheap, home remedy. And if you really want to get rid of your bad breath and believe in that, you will do it. If anyone of you know how to get rid of black spots, natural moles on the face, please share it with me. Thanks."

Put it on a cotton ball and leave it on the tag for at least 10 min. Then start to wipe it back and forth and in circles. You will notice it get ligther, smaller and disappear except for a clear sac. I then cut it off with sterilized scissors. It was painless except for a little tingle while rubbing it. Try it! I loved it and highly recommend it for getting fast results and hardly any pain!"

Low and behold one day I was figuring out my budget and how I could cut back. So while I was grocery shopping I decided not to buy my son's regular 2 blocks of cheese per week. It was something he would have to do without. After a couple weeks of not eating cheese, we noticed his breath was refreshing. I was so happy, I realized right away it was the cheese since it was the only change from his regular routine. To this day, he eats cheese once in a while but does not suffer from bad breath. Hope this will help some other people with this terrible problem."

I suffered from bad breath for as long as i can remember. But never knew why and what was the cause until recently. A few days ago, I started cleaning my colon. You see, I used to eat cereal with milk every morning or at least every other day. Soon after I stopped drinking Milk for about 7 days, the smell went away. Now I eat everything else except milk. The Bad Breath never came back. It's been almost 2 months now. Having bad breath was terrible. It affected every relationship and friendship I had even with my son. I always had a pack of gum in my packet. Today I enjoying my new life."

[YEA] 05/06/2007: Sandra from Near Atlanta, Georgia writes: "Thank you for this site. It is so informative and helpful! I discovered it a few months ago after I did a search for more information on oil pulling after hearing about it on a radio show. Since then I occassionally browse your site. I have yet to try the oil pulling, but I have started using Apple Cider Vinegar and the Blackstrap Molasses. I have not been consistent with the Blackstrap Molasses, but it has helped me. I am anemic with a fibroid & feel the difference in my energy & appearence. I have been using the ACV every day. I drink it in the mornings and I also put it in bottled water & take it with me to work to sip on all day. This has helped me with bad breath and is strengthening my gums and teeth.
I also want to share something that will stop bad breath that I have not seen discussed anywhere. I know from personal experience how big this problem can be. Perhaps my experience will help someone who is hurting and needing help as I was. I quit a very good job because of my problem. I suffered a lot of hurt and embarrassment not to mention the financial stress of being unemployed. At the time I could not see another solution to my problem. My job required talking on the telephone with customers all day long and being in close quarters with many co-workers. I could not afford to go to the dentist. Even though I had that job I was not yet eligible for dental insurance. I wish I'd found the solution before I quit. I had very bad breath from infected gums and an infected tooth with a hole in it. I tried all kinds of things, but nothing would stop the smell. I tried several things and added more things as I discovered them. (Peroxide, baking soda, lots of vitamin C, etc.) Then I decided that I could temporarily plug up the hole with cotton soaked with Tea Tree Oil. Then I started using some dental wax to cover the cotton. That helped a lot, but the smell & taste from the infected tooth came back after a very short period of time. Then one day I decided to see what herbs the herbalist Dr. John Christopher recommended for my problem. In that search I found information on Echinacea. He said this herb actually eliminates foul odors and fetid discharges. It's anti-putrefactive, and arrests pus formation. Also it is an excellent healing agent wherever tissue decay is taking place and it is a blood purifier. I immediately found some Echinacea and Goldenseal capsules that I had sitting around and took some. Then I opened one of the capsules and poured some of the powder in the hole in my tooth and packed it with the Tea Tree Oil soaked cotton. This WORKED! The Echinacea & Goldenseal powder got rid of the odor! It's getting rid of the infection. It turns out that Goldenseal is also good for periodontal disease. It also helps with digestive disorders that might cause bad breath. I'm thrilled! I now have another good job that is in some ways better than the other one. It also requires that I talk to customers on the telephone all day and be in close quarters with co-workers. Everything is fine there. I have not been to a dentist yet, but my bad breath and gum infection is under control. I will eventually have to go to the dentist to have the hole filled, but I am so happy that this problem is solved. No more embarrassment from having bad breath and I don't have to make an expensive trip to the dentist without insurance. Again, THANK YOU for this site. You don't know how much you're helping by the information you provide."

GOOD ORAL HYGIENE, NASAL CLEANSING AND SUPPLEMENTS
[YEA] 02/28/2008: Angel from Miami, USA writes: "topped my bad breath with good oral hygiene, nasal cleansing and supplements.
I removed a piece of popcorn kernel from under my gum which had a terrible smell. After that, my dentist and doctors said I was in good health but I still had bad breath for the next 2 years.
My oral routine is now an enzyme promoting toothgel and mouthwash(that treat my dry mouth and contain xylitol), floss, a tongue scraper, and an anticeptic oral cleanser containing carbamide. I floss, then crape my tongue gently. Then put 10 drops of carbamide gel on my tongue, mix with saliva and spit. I put 3 drops of carbamide gel on my soft bristle toothbrush then brush my teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Rinse and gargle with mouthwash. That's ususally three times a day. And about 3 times a week I polish my teeth, etc before I brush -- mix in my hand of 1 tsp each of baking soda and salt with a little water.
I cleanse my sinus/nasal area with a nasal irrigator a few times a week with 1 tsp each of salt and baking soda. Or twice a day if I am having sinus problems.
The other key was treating my sinus/post nasal problem with whole food supplements that contain supercritical garlic and oregano. Also changed my mouth and body's smell with a whole food supercritical antioxidants blend like tumeric, clove, ginger rosemary. And sip plenty of water through the day to stay hydrated. If I chew gum, it contains xylitol.
I needed to do a better job of brushing when and how I should. My body just needed supplements to be more healthy. The byproduct is I generally just feel better. The best thing is for the first time in years, I am not self conscious when I kiss my husband."

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

1 SIDE EFFECT
[YEA] 04/28/2009: Jay-R from Cavite, Philippines writes: "I knew I had halitosis for so many years and God knows how much I have suffered because of this humiliating disease. I lost the girl I loved so much. I couldn't talk in front of people. I could sense based on people's reaction whenever I talk that my breath stinks as far as 10 feet away. I could hardly breath whenever I ride in a car with someone else because the malodor is there even if I don't talk (proof of my chronic condition - the odor comes not only from the mouth but from the nostril also). My job as an executive secretary involves a lot of talking to people, especially my bosses. Because of my stinking breath, I couldnt perform my job well, and the thought resigning has been hanging 'round my mind. I thought it's better to hide in the mountains where I can breath freely than to stay in the city where I feel I had no freedom to breathe.
I tried all kinds of toothpaste, mints, gums, mouthwashes, lemons, ginger, tea, water therapy, probiotics, dentist, EENT doctor, friends whom I knew had halitosis in the past, but nothing and no one was able to help. But thanks be to GOD, He led me to this site!!! Hydrogen Peroxide is His answer to my prayer for healing.
Knowing the severity of my condition, I started using HP 6% instead of 3% (1 tablespoon HP diluted with 5 tablespoon of water). My first time use was in the evening of April 24, 2009. I sensed how effective it was because the following morning, the foul odor is gone like magic! I intend to continue using it twice a day for a month, then will see if I can stop completely afterwards.
I can't thank you enough for this site. God has given me new life thru you. Thank YOU!! Thank GOD!!! "

05/20/2009: Alain from Ottawa, Canada replies: "Answer to Joanne from Jakarta "HOW TO DILUTE 20% PEROXIDE FOR MOUTH WASH?"
You can dilute it to make a 1.5% solution. 1 vol of H2O2 @ 20% 12 vol of Distilled water will make a solution at about 1.5% i.e. 20%/13.
Formula for ratio of concentrated H2O2 to distilled water to produce a new concentration:
ratio = (OldConc/NewConc) -1
Ex: 20% -->10% requires 1 vol of H2O2 to 1 vol of Distilled water ( 20%/10%) -1 = 2 -1 = 1..
Ex 35% --> 3% requires 1 vol of H2O2 to 11 vol of Distilled water (35% / 3%) -1 = 12-1 = 11."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 08/15/2008: Daneil from Chicago, IL writes: "Just to let people know that I got a condition known as hairy tongue about a year ago when I first started messing about with H202. If you are going to use it for a mouth wash, make sure that even the 3% Peroxide is diluted. At most, the ratio is supposed to be 1:5 in the water.
Anyway, I took it straight and it caused a horrible unsightly condition called hairy tongue which I have NOT been able to get rid of.
I have posted something on this site about six months ago - tried everything, salt water, h202 dilute, lemon water, brushing it with a scraper etc and NOTHING works.
I am not knowing Hydrogen Peroxide. I am sure it is good stuff and has its uses but don't use it as a mouthwash like I did without diluting it. Be careful when experimenting.
Take Care (and if anyone knows something that can help me, please let me know)
Daniel"
[YEA] 01/16/2009: Julie from Linden, Michigan replies: "I use hydrogen peroxide to rinse my mouth out after brushing and flossing in the morning....but I absolutely dilute it. About 1/2 & 1/2 should be fine. Not sure what to tell you about the hairy tongue though...sounds like it must be awful though. I'm sorry you had to experience that."
01/29/2009: Dorothy from Dallas, Georgia replies: "I suffered from a "hairy tongue" or a white coated tongue for many months. I did not know what caused the problem, and tried every oral hygiene method I could think of to remedy it, but to no avail. Everyone to include the doctors said it was because I had a dirty mouth. I have always prided myself on taking care of my dental needs so I knew a dirty mouth was not the problem. To make a long story short, through my persistent, I finally found a doctor who diagnosed the problem. The hairy tongue was caused by excessive yeast in my body. Just as excessive yeast can show up as a vaginal yeast infection, it can also show up as a hairy or white coated tongue in the mouth. The doctor prescribed the proper antibiotics and within days the problem disappeared."

[YEA] 06/14/2008: Cathy from London, England writes: "I have been suffering from bad breath for a few years now and had tried various different remedies, some worked, but mainly for a very short space of time, the bad breath always returning. I tried the HP and am very pleased to say my bad breath has COMPLETELY cleared up! I used 2 parts HP to 5 parts water of 3%, 10vol type (that is what is says on the bottle!). I gargle and rinse morning and night, for as long as I can stand, usually max 30 secs per mouthful, then spit out. I then rinse my mouth with salt water. I also wait the 15 mins before I drink or eat anything.
With other remedies and mouthwashes, they simply mask the problem, but with HP because it eliminates the actual bacteria, you then eliminate the bad breath. A big THANK you to this site for helping me in this way, I feel so much better all round. I would definately urge ANYONE with bad breath problems to give this a go.

[YEA] 10/01/2007: FR from NYC writes: "Hi, just wanted to share with you my cure for an infected gum -- hydrogen peroxide. Also wanted to respond to Subashini from Kuwait, because I may have an answer for her about the bad breath and oil pulling.
My story (I'll try to be brief)... got a piece of food stuck in the gum behind one of my front teeth. No matter what I did -- floss, oil pull, swish peroxide -- it didn't come out. I then went to a new dentist last week to have my teeth cleaned and the stuck particle removed. Lucky me -- the hygenist was just filling in for the day and during the teeth cleaning part, said she saw something dislodge but then "lost sight of it". Okay, fine, I thought. That night I awoke in the middle of the night with terrible bad breath. It was so bad it actually woke me up. Yes, I do have sensitive smell!! When I looked at the right front tooth the next day, I noticed that the gum was severely swollen, from the tooth to the roof of the mouth. The bad breath also persisted. I started my holistic regime of oil pulling, then later swishing with hydrogen peroxide. The oil pulling, like Subashini said, made my breath worse. YUCK! I tried swishing with sea salt. No luck. Finally I had the idea a couple of days ago to soak a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide and then hold it (tightly) to the swollen gum for 10 minutes. I also pinched another h202 soaked cotton ball to the back side of the tooth where the piece of food had initially lodged. Interestingly, it didn't hurt, but certain areas of the gum turned white. 10 minutes later the white had disappeared. Glad to say that my bad breath smell immediately disappeared and has not returned. My gum is looking a little better. A couple more days of this (soaked h202 2x a day) and I think I will be back to 100%. I highly suggest this technique if you have a tooth abcess or swollen gums from an infection. It is the best way for hydrogen to penetrate, otherwise it just turns to foam if you swish it around in your mouth.
So Subashini, I think your issue may be an infection somewhere in your gums that the oil pulling is bringing to the surface. Infection smells like dental plaque -- quite disgusting. My suggestion is to pull up your top lip (then pull down the bottom lip) in the mirror in daylight and look for redness in your gums. If you can pinpoint an area, then soak it with hydrogen peroxide cotton ball 2x a day for a day or two. I would predict that your issue of bad breath will immediately go away, even after you oil pull.
Oh, one more thing. You will need to bend over a sink whilst holding the cotton ball to your gums and let your saliva run out. You may need to do round 2 during the same session. Most importantly, you don't want to swallow anything! Rinse well afterwards. Hope this helps someone, somewhere. All My Best,"

[YEA] 07/17/2007: Barbara from Charleston , WV writes: "A science teacher recommended this to me years ago and I've been doing it ever since. Hydrogen Peroxide is a great mouthwash. It kills the bacteria in your mouth which the cause of bad breath. Also brightens your teeth a bit. I take a swig of 3%, swirl it around my mouth for a min or so, spit it out and wallah, breath is fresh."

[YEA] 05/27/2007: Edith from Elizabeth, NJ writes: "Have you ever known somebody with bad breath? Here is the cure.
1-Do gargles with hydrogen peroxide. All the bacteria accumulated by years will be killed and your breath will be as fresh as it can be.
2-Do the same once a week or maybe once a month. If you still have any problem, that I doubt it, probiotics will be the solution for getting rid of bad breath if it is accompanied by body odor.
But the first step is the gargles."
