Eye floaters are usually mild visual disturbances caused by clumps of fibrous tissue in the eye that leave small shadows that resemble small spots or cob-web like lines. At first they may be hardly noticeable as they come on gradually as part of the aging process. Natural remedies for eye floaters include beets, castor oil, and the herb comfrey.
Note that eye floaters come on gradually. Any sudden visual changes or disturbances must be ruled out by a qualified professional to ensure that something more serious is not the cause of what appears to be eye floaters.
Beets
Canned beets or juiced beets are a natural remedy for eye floaters. Beets are highly nutritious and contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that are critical to eye health. Consuming beets or beet juice will provide these important nutrients.
You can simply add canned beets to your daily diet. Because of the high fiber content and the detoxifying properties of beets, begin with a small amount (one small beet, for example) and increase your intake as desired. Beginning with a large amount of beets at once could cause digestive distress or detox symptoms if you are not used to eating beets.
If you decide to juice fresh beets, the caution to begin slowly is even more important. Beet juice is a highly concentrated food which can cause you to feel quite sick if you are not used to consuming it. Juice only one small beet to begin with (or add it to other fruits and vegetables that you know agree with you.) Increase the amount slowly as desired.
Castor Oil
Castor oil can be applied directly to the eye to reduce floaters. Castor oil is used to dissolve all sorts of different growths and cysts in the body. Use only cold-pressed hexane free castor oil in your eyes. Use one drop in each eye at bedtime. It will cause a bit of temporary blurry vision because it is an oil. It may also sting initially but will leave your eyes feeling well hydrated.
Taurine
A taurine supplement is sometimes used to reduce eye floaters. Taurine is an amino acid and antioxidant. It is found in meats and not vegetables, so vegetarians are at particular risk for taurine deficiency.
Comfrey
Comfrey is an herbal source of lutein and promotes cell regeneration. Comfrey tea can be used like eye drops in the eye. Comfrey tea does need to be freshly brewed daily. Many drink it on a daily basis for its anti-inflammatory effects, though it should be noted that internal use of comfrey is controversial.
