BAKING SODA VS BAKING POWDER

03/24/2009: Eileen from St Andrews, Fife, Scotland writes: "Hi there,

Ted mentions ACV with Baking Soda. I assume the latter is Sodium Bicarbonate (and not what we call Baking Powder here in the UK). I live in UK and tried to locate pharmaceutical grade Sodium Bicarbonate but was confused that it came under the heading of Industrial Chemicals with other cleaning agents!! Have I got the right stuff. I don't want to end up swallowing something I'm supposed to claen my kitchen sink with!!

Many thanks, Eileen"

EC: Baking soda is both used for cleaning and for heartburn! Here are 2 posts from apple cider vinegar + baking soda page that may clarify the issue:

04/23/2007: Janelle from Brisbane, Australia replies: "After reading a lot of comments regarding this remedy, it seems that people are getting confused between Bicarb Soda and Baking Soda. They are two different products. Could you please make it clear to those people who are referring to Bicarb Soda. Thanks.

4/24/2007: Janelle writes again: "Hi, I wrote to you yesterday asking if you could advise people about the difference between Baking Soda and Bicarbonate Soda. It seems that it was actually my mistake. In Australia and England (it seems) we don't refer to a product called Baking Soda. We call it Bicarb Soda. I think some people outside the US are getting confused because we also have Baking Powder which is a different product, usually Wheat/Corn flour with added Mineral Salts. Bicarb Soda is definately Sodium Bicarbonate and is the correct product. Hope this clears things up. Thanks for the great website."

ACID REFLUX

3 YEA

05/09/2008: Sandy from Salisbury, MD writes: "WOW! I googled whether using sodium bicarb frequently for acid reflux might be harmful - and was amazed at all the information and other uses for it! I will be printing this for future use, and for my sister, who is a nurse suffering with gout, to see if it helps her. I am getting extremely interested in finding more natural ways to treat symptoms and illnesses after working in the medical field for 25 years, and seeing how frequently prescribed medications don't help, or the side effects or interactions are too much to deal with. I'll check your site frequently!! Thanks!"

[YEA]  01/18/2008: James from Houston, TX writes: "Hi I have occasional acid refulx and my wife has it severe at times. DO NOT TAKE ACV for Acid Reflux! It just doesn't make any sense. Acid Reflux is an Acid - you neutralize Acids with Bases (Alkaline).

pH less than 7 = Acidic, pH > 7 = Basic (Alkaline). Vinegar pH = 3ish
An antacid is any substance, generally a base, which counteracts stomach acidity. In other words, antacids are stomach acid neutralizers. I truly believe that adding an ACID to your stomach to reduce Stomach Acid is the wrong approach. You should add a BASE like baking soda. Rolaids & Tums are both Calcium Carbonate. Alka-Seltzer is Soduim BiCarbonate. Baking Soda = Sodium BiCarbonate. In the duodenum, gastric acid is neutralized by sodium bicarbonate. So Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) is used internally by the body to naturally regulate stomach Acid. The equation is HCl NaHCO3 → NaCl H2CO3. HCL = HydroChloric (Stomach) acid
NaHC03 = Baking Soda.

Just add a little bit of baking soda to some water, swirl it around, and drink it. Within a few minutes you will belch. The belch is the gas released when the baking soda neutralizes your stomach acid (or if its crept into your throat it will neutralize it there). You will feel much better immediately. Baking Soda is completely safe.
'Why would you ever want to add an acid (vinegar) to another acid (HCL) with the hopes of reducing acid? That doesn't make any sense.

Vinegar is acetic acid (CH3COOH). Some of these recipies recommend you add Baking Soda to ACV. When vinegar is added to sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), it produces a volatile mixture of carbonic acid rapidly decomposing into water and carbon dioxide bubbles, making the reaction "fizz". It is exemplified as the typical acid-base reaction in school science experiments. The salt that is formed is sodium acetate. Basically, this little experiment proves that its better to just take baking soda. The Vinegar is the acid and the Baking Soda is the base. The Baking Soda neutralizes the acid. Its the same way in your stomach, just add the Baking Soda and it will neutralize the acid. All you need is about a teaspoon of baking soda in an ounce or two of water. Problem solved immediately.

Good luck and I hope this helps."

03/01/2008: John from Duluth, Minnesota replies: "I read a message from James from Houston who took issue with using acid (apple cider vinegar) to fight stomach acid (HCl). It should be noted that vinegar is classified as a "weak" acid whereas HCl is a strong acid. In spite of the fact that both are acids, a weak acid will still react with a strong acid and diminish the acidity. The final result may not rise above the pH of the weak acid, but it is a significant improvement over the pH of the strong acid."

01/14/2009: Echoe from Des Moines, Iowa replies: "I wanted to add on to Ted's feedback on the objection to Apple Cider Vinegar for acid reflux.

It must be understood what the cause of the reflux is. Depending on the cause, the response will be different.

For some, the cause of the reflux is a production of too much acid, in which case, lemon juice in water, baking soda, and if chosen, an antacid of some sort.

However, for others, the cause of the reflux is not that too much acid is made, but too LITTLE acid. You can tell if you have little or no burping when you use baking soda as your remedy. The reason for the reflux in this case is not acid, but fermentation of food that is just sitting in your stomach. This means the remedy called for would be MORE acid. In which case, vinegar is very helpful.

The reason for adding 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to vinegar is to help stop the burning effect of vinegar as you drink it. However, if you can stand it, vinegar at full strength with no reduction is recommended in this case."

03/28/2009: DrJ from Bombay, India replies: "Dear James,
These is alot of science in that post but its not to accurate. ACV may be acid to taste but it forms an alkaline "ash" once digested. ACV is an excellent remedy on its own diluted in water (not mixed with bicarb etc) if sipped through out the day. It simulates digestive enzyme function. Using for low HCL reflux is best. For best results with high HCL reflux try the Lemon/bicarb formula or Citric acid/bicarb formula!"

[YEA]  05/05/2007: Marty from Lake Alfred, FL writes: "I use baking soda in all my drinking water for better health in general. Use only enough too nuturalize the acid found in nearly all municipal water supplies and [unbeliveably] in bottlrd water too.I got relief from acid reflux, not nearly as much cold or sinus problem, and better joint condition.I did the PH test several times and found a pinch of baking soda about the size of the small finger nailin every glass or bottle of store bought water does the job. Most people have an acidic Body PH and the object is to keep the body PH above 7. 7.2 would be great. There are many other health benifits to this. 6 to 8 glasses per day recomended, the water taste better too. If you mix the soda with water and can taste the soda you are using too much. Be Healthy Be Happy!! Marty"

ACNE

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/29/2009: Sweetpea from Henderson, Nv, U.S. writes: "Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) for Acne

My son is 12 years old and has bad acne for about 1 1/2 years. I tried many of the over the counter products: cleansers, facial scrubs, toners, astringents, and moisturizers, but nothing worked. While doing some house cleaning using sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and water it occured to me to try that for a face wash for him. I made a paste and have him use it every morning and every night ~ he uses it like any other facial cleanser and it has been fantastic! The pimples have shrunk in size and many are gone. His pores are much smaller. It doesn't burn, sting, or dry out his face. And best of all, it is really inexpensive."

ALKALINE DIET/BLOOD PH

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/19/2008: Anna from East Lansing, US writes: "Regarding the recommendation by Ted to consume sodium bicarbonate in order to increase the body's pH...I can't (off the top of my head) quote exact solubility constants, but free carbonate anions are likely to bind with aqueous calcium cations in the blood, forcing the body to "steal" calcium from bone in order to maintain its delicate ion balance. Perhaps this is why consumption of soda pop (which is carbonated) is associated with bone loss. People assume it is the acid in the pop, but the electrochemical potential of a redox reaction in which solid calcium donates electrons to oxygen in the presence of hydronium cations to yield water and aqueous calcium cations will be at MOST on the order of 10^-6 V, and that would be for EXTREMELY acidic blood (pH 6)."

ALKALIZING pH

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/20/2009: Bill from Satellite Beach, FL writes: "I have found that the only thing that alkalizes my body is aluminum free backing soda. I take about a teaspoon a day, usually at night on an empty stomach. It does work, as the ph strips confirm, but I wonder is it healthy to do this everyday? Does someone know the accurate answer to this?"

EC: FYI -- Aluminum-free baking soda is a bogus product. Read the feedback here:
http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/baking_soda.html#ALUMINUM

10/23/2009: Cindy from Van Nuys, Ca replies: "I have found that taking the juice of one lemon or lime daily alkalizes my pH. I usually mix it into a very large glass of water and take it in the evening. I know it sounds odd that an acidic fruit would help, but through research I found that the lemon and lime actually turn alkaline in the body.

I used to suffer from chronic neck and shoulder pain, and tension headaches that would often turn into migraines from the Lactic acid buildup in my system. I for the first time in about 8 years have found freedom from these issues with a simple lemon..."

[YEA]  09/13/2007: Raphael from Stow, Ohio writes: "everyone who is using a lot of baking soda, should make sure you are getting aluminum FREE baking soda. As we all know aluminum is not something we want in us. Most baking soda you get will have aluminum in it. Google "aluminum free baking soda" to find some."

EC: Actually, one of our readers already spent a good deal of time researching this topic a year ago (Read his entire email on the Where to Buy page):

08/09/2006: Methuselah from Los Angeles replies: "For sodium bicarbonate, I use the regular Arm & Hammer baking soda that you can find in any grocery store. I contacted them also, and they told me that they do not add anything to their baking soda although they do not have any chemical analysis of the soda ash (a mined mineral deposit) from which they make their baking soda by adding carbon dioxide in a solution--i.e., no additives or stabilizers. I hope that this information answers your question. Please let me know if you need more information. Have a great week and keep up the good work. Also thanks for all the help."

12/23/2008: Laraine from Rotorua, New Zealand replies: "Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which has a specific chemical compound. If you add aluminium to it it won't BE sodium bicarbonate. So anyone selling baking soda as either bicarbonate of soda or sodium bicarbonate when they have put aluminium in it is misleading consumers. In my country that is against the law. You certainly shouldn't have to pay an arm, a leg and your head as well (as you do in New Zealand health shops) for a product that has no business having aluminium in it anyway."

BAKING SODA AND BENZENE

1 YEA

[YEA]  02/12/2008: Nathan from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam writes: "I read Dr. Hulda Clark's book, "The Cure For All Diseases." In it she mentions that most brands of baking soda are tainted with benzene. I know you can buy better baking soda in a health food store, but that's not an option where I live. Is it safe to mix ACV with carbonated mineral water instead? The ACV they sell here is pretty acidic, so I need something to buffer it."

EC: Excerpted from an email we received in 2006:

08/09/2006: Methuselah from Los Angeles replies: "...For sodium bicarbonate, I use the regular Arm & Hammer baking soda that you can find in any grocery store. 06/04/2008: Beatrice from Oakdale, USA replies: "I also have been reading Dr. Clark's books. In fact I am in the process of starting the parasite program, kidney and liver cleanses. I was browsing about baking soda because a natural healer told me to bathe in Epsom salt and baking soda for a joint problem (3 cups of salt and 1/2 of baking soda) for 20-30 minutes, once per week. I haven't tried it yet, but I was glad to find some information on your site. Thanks for all the info.

PS: Does anyone else have any input on Dr. Clark's research? Or has anyone actually tried the kidney and liver cleanses? I have high cholesterol and hope this will reduce it. "

06/05/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello, Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate, not table salt and baking soda. I always come out an epsom salts bath feeling better & more relaxed. I don't know what table salt and baking soda does!"

1 BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  07/02/2009: Jill B. from Newcastle, NSW Australia writes: "any dangers from taking bi carbonate of soda? i have been taking approx 1/2 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda twice a day for approx 2years without any apparent side effects. Recently I have been a bit constipated, despite drinking approx 2 litres of filtered water a day, and having a small quantity of fruit. Our diet has only small amount protein, no beef, and asian vegies. I have regular colonscopies, all good. I am not on any medication (62yo). At present I have a virus, flu and dr said low blood pressure. Is long term use harmful, could it cause fluid imbalance, hence constipation and low blood pressure, or leach out other necessary salts?"

07/02/2009: Betty from Spearsville, LA. USA replies: "Dear Jill B,

I do not know if the use of the BS would cause the constipation. I have considered using it to help my lungs. I hope you are soon able to resolve the problem. I just wanted to mention to you that supplemental magnesium will help with the constipation. It draws water to the intestines. If you begin to develop diarrhea just back off it some. Everyone should be using mag.

Betty"

07/03/2009: Sara from The Beach, Canada replies: "i cant speak for others, but i too experienced the constipation effect while taking baking soda and ACV. i releived this problem by taking magnesium citrate, 450-500 mgs a day. i think the baking soda may rob your body of some minerals, i dont take baking soda 7 days a week though. i take it 5 on 2 off. hope this helps. 10/24/2008: Alain from Ottawa, Canada replies: "ANSWER TO BILL ABOUT BAKING SODA

Hi Bill:

I would consider using exclusively baking soda as a quick fix. I would be concerned if used over an extended period of time. Some people, like myself, may have problems with water retention. This is why baking soda + Apple Cider Vinegar and potassium bicarbonate or potassium citrate would probably be better because of a better sodium/potassium ratio (sodium in the extracellular fluid and potassium in intracellular fluid).

Overall Health Part 2: Imbalance Often Leads to Hypertension

Yet, the best is to alkalize with good quality foods. Search for pH balance on the web for more information.

[YEA]  10/10/2008: Katie from Garland, TX writes: "I was trying to make sugar wax for hair removal at home. I had poured the sugar in a bowl and was waiting for it to cool.. I got bored and decided to pick at the edges to see if it was setting right. The edges were hard. I picked more and caught my knuckle of my middle finger on the HOT, melted sugar. It hurt A LOT! Running cold water on it helped, but eventually, the pain and swelling got so bad, nothing was working. I went to the 24 hour drug store and the manager sprayed some burn pain relief on it. It worked but I kept having to spray it on, and eventually, it stopped working, too.

Out of desparation, I went with my first instinct I had when I burned myself and made a paste out of baking soda. The pain went away immediately. But it came back as the baking soda dried out. I had to go to bed so I could work the next day. So, I made more paste, caked it on my finger, covered my hand with a ziploc baggie and covered the baggie with a sock. Then, I took Excedrin PM and went to bed. When I woke up, the baking soda paste was still wet and my finger no longer hurt. There's a blister there, but no pain!"

07/26/2009: Hank from Moorestown, NJ replies: "I haven't tried baking soda for burns yet, but the last time I got a burn I put Chinese Tiger Balm (available in most Asian grocery stores) on and it had the same effect. [YEA]  05/24/2008: Mo from Amsterdam, The Netherlands writes: "I read about using Baking Soda as a deodorant and have been using it for the last 3 months. I had tried everything - crystals and a product with lemon juice and its essence - all very good but it did not always protect the entire day. I am very happy to say that Baking Soda has been the best I have ever used - 100% effective - lasting the whole day and longer. When I shave my underarm I use Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) for at least 2 to 3 days in order to allow healing before resuming with Baking Soda. (Please do this to avoid burns). VCO is also very good but has not consistently protected all day long. I have been spreading the word to health conscious friends.

Like others, I think this site is a god-send. Thank you. I have started using Baking soda as a facial and all over body scrub; then I apply ACV and finally VCO to my face. I have been quite consistent for the last 3 months including Ted's advise regarding large facial pores. I cannot believe that my skin looks so beautiful and smooth at the age of 41. I always had beautiful skin now I look even younger - it simply is amazing!!

I have now starting being more consistent with drinking ACV 3 times a day because I need to loose at least 16 llbs. Since the birth of my third child 11 months ago - it has been a very slow process. I am hoping that in a few months I can be write a post like many others - saying that I am loosing weight. I also plan to ingest VCO and also start using it for all cooking as well. I began eating 1 tablespoon of Black Strap Molasses every morning. I try to eat a very healthy diet. So I guess soon I will not only look good but feel great as well.

Thanks again for this wonderful site!!"

[NAY]  11/22/2007: TP from Boston, MA writes: "I was taking baking soda for general reasons, creating an alkaline environment, staying thin. For some reason, I ended up with a cough for over a week and I think it was caused by the baking soda. I was taking the remedy 2 times a day. 1/8 baking soda and 2 Tbsp ACV with water. Maybe I took it for too many days. I felt good taking it, I even looked thinner. But after getting this cough, I started to think maybe the baking soda was such not a good idea after all. Was this effecting my lungs? It is a cleaning agent, it neutralizes acids in the body. But is it really good for the body the way it is considered to be good for cleaning your kitchen, laundry, or even an agent for clogging drains? It's a pretty powerful chemical. The good old saying of everything in moderation is important however; and nothing must be used over a prolongued period of time. Once the desired results are achieved, one should go back to normal. We need the acids for digesting certain minerals, and we need the alkaline for when the acids need to be reduced. Seasonal foods may hold a secret as to what we need in particular seasons."

My own experience with one such type of ACV led to thrush. I analysed this as too much acid for the candida bacteria to live on; and a very good sign for the need for an Alluminium free Bicarbonate in water solution treatment."
