Cayenne Pepper is an herb made from the dried pods of chili peppers. Besides being a very popular spice in cooking, cayenne has also been used medicinally for thousands of years. High in Vitamins A, C, B complex, calcium and potassium, cayenne is a wonderful healing aid for the digestive system since it acts as a catalyst and increases the effectiveness of other foods and herbs when used with them. It is also very healing for the heart and circulatory system. Studies have shown that Cayenne can rebuild the tissue in the stomach and the peristaltic action in the intestines.
Cayenne is traditionally used by herbalists to cure stomach aches, cramping, gas, varicose veins, allergies, and constipation. One of the most amazing healing properties of cayenne is that it has been used successfully time and time again to relieve heart attacks:
From the healing text of Dr. Christopher:
"In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in--if they are still breathing--I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water, and within minutes they are up and around). This is one of the fastest acting aids we could ever give for the heart, because it feeds that heart immediately. Most hearts are suffering from malnutrition because of processed food we are eating, but here it gets a good powerful dose of real food and it's something that has brought people in time after time. This is something that everyone should know how great it is, because a heart attack can come to your friends or loved ones any time. And even yourself. The warm tea is faster working than tablets, capsules, cold tea, because the warm tea opens up the cell structure--makes it expand and accept the cayenne that much faster, and it goes directly to the heart, through the artery system, and feeds it in powerful food."

African Bird Peppers
07/07/2011: John Garber from Twin Falls, Idaho, Id Usa: "Dear Sirs:
Can you tell us where we can buy 10 pounds of whole African Bird Peppers? And for how much?
Thank you, John Garber"Replies
03/10/2012: Andy from London, Uk replies: "I make Cocoa which has a lot of health properties. I sprinkle in a pinch of cayenne pepper, and it tastes very good."
10/05/2012: Saydieauntie from Greenville, Sc replies: "I have recently come across this website and am very excited to begin a cayenne tea as I have a family history or bad heart health. I am as most consider still relatively young, but have been on bp mess since my early 20's. Just curious if since I'm just starting out is it ok to take with my bp meds and fish oil pills??? I certainly don't want to mix meds and herba that would result in a bad reaction! Any advice would be of great help!!! :)"
10/06/2012: Mmsg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "Sadieauntie, start small, with very little."
[YEA] 06/21/2009: Geri from Dothan, Alabama: "Cayenne pepper effects on heart racing and arrythmia...
I have been using cayenne pepper for several months for racing heart and arrythmia. Within less than a minute my heart is back to normal!! I use 1/2 teaspoon in warm water, less than a cup, one teaspoon in 8oz is recommended, but I get the results from 1/2 tsp., also I use cayenne pepper liberally on most of my food, like salads, baked potato, omlets, etc.. I have tried MANY natural cures, but never had one work so fast. The Phamaceutical companies will probably try to get this miracle cure declared illegal! If people could try it, doctors and drugs would lose billions! I don't mind the heat at all for the results I get. It IS a good idea to have some food in your stomach, though. Wonderful site, Earth Clinic!!"Replies
11/27/2009: Holyfoods from Saint John, New Brunswick replies: ""big pharma" could never make cayenne illegal. but, you'll never hear of a doctor (non-holistic) prescribing cayenne for arrythmias, ulcers, circulation etc. because theres no money in it for them or the drug companies, much like most natural cures. and thats just fantastic!"
[YEA] 02/13/2011: Kolin from Nottingham, England replies: "Yesterday I had, unusually while awake, a strong episode of atrial flutter, my chest felt like a washine machine full of golf balls! It would not calm down with relaxation etc, so, half teaspoon cayenne in a cup of warm water followed by a short deliberate heavy coughing session, 5 minutes later all went back to normal, well worth trying!
Keep up these posts, love to all, Kolin."
02/14/2011: Dallas from Amesbury, Ma, Usa replies: "This is a GREAT description of an arrythmia! Gotta LOVE it. Next time it happens, I hope I remember this remedy. Another remedy to keep the golf balls out of the washing machine is CoQ10 on a regular basis. I started with a heavy dose and it worked right away. I was astounded. Then I worked my way down to a lighter dose. Less expensive."
02/15/2011: Candy from Fort Madison, Ia replies: "I don't get it. What are you talking about golf balls in the washing machine?"
02/16/2011: Kolin from Nottingham, England replies: "Re: chest feeling like a washing machine full of golf balls, the sensation in my chect was many light weight , irregular flutterings feeling, I thought like a heap of golf balls juggling about, not a regular fast beat as with atrial tachycardia which I have experienced a few times. These things are difficult to describe to anyone who has not experienced them, hope this helps explain somewhat. The main point however was the rapid return to normal after the cayenne and coughing.
Thanks for your interest, Kolin."
12/07/2011: Michael from Pheonix, Az replies: "Its great to hear of your success. I've been reading up on cayenne pepper and decided to give it a try. I am taking it as a tea as well as trying to incorporate it more into my regular diet as a spice. I think it would be very difficult for big pharma to make it illegal, however they do a good enough job of marginalizing the thought of its benefits. My doctor reacted with mild disdain at the subject. Nevertheless, I can already feel a difference and it's only been around a week. I've learned the hard way to have something in my stomach when I take cayenne pepper for me at least when starting out, so as not to totally shock my digestive system.
all the best in your health, Michael."
[YEA] 08/07/2008: Trina from St.Helens, Oregon: "Rheumatoid/Osteo Arthritis: So update, I have done oil pulling and still have twice everyday. My Arthritis is not completely gone. I think it's because i aint using the right oil. But i still sleep well and no more chocolate addiction. And branded scar is completly GONE Due to the Organic Sufflower oil that i pulled with. Anyways i wanna loose weight to help my arthritis because my doctor says i have both.((RA/OA)) So i try the recommended Master Cleanse Diet (from this site by a person). After day one i felt really Pain free. in that diet all you drink is Cayenne pepper in filtered water with Grade A/B Organic Maple syrup and organic lemon. Oh and diet tea and salt laxitive. I did that diet for 2 and half days without eating.
Anyways it was the cayenne pepper that made me pain free. I researched cayenne pepper online and bought the pills. It works great. I take more then it says too. it takes about 6 Cayenne fruit pills. it cost less the 3 dollars at Wal-mart. And Well worth it!! - u know that diet i was supposed to have min. Look up Cayenne pepper it does much more then just for pain oh and weight loss. 3 thumbs way up."
09/21/2006: Vince from Philadelphia, PA: "I had Athletes' Foot between 2 toes that sit against each other. I had it off and on for years. It was hard to dry them after a shower, and when in a rush, I don't think I did it that well, and then sitting against each other, I would probably really have to, and sweating probably cause it also. I only applied cayenne in salt water one time, and it has been gone for years. Usually it has to stay in place for a while on skin surfaces, so I soak the gauze on a bandaid, but since my toes touch, I didn't have to."
[YEA] 11/15/2008: Rob from Springfield, MO: "Every winter since I was little I would get bloody noses because of the dry indoor air. Last winter it was bad. I was having at least one a day no matter how much I ran my humidifier. I came across this site and read about Cayenne Pepper helping with this problem. The day I started taking Cayenne Pepper pills was the last time I had a bloody nose! (It has been almost a year now) I take one in the morning with my vitamins and dont worry about my nose exploding every time I sneeze. Try it, you wont be disappointed!"
04/28/2007: Crystal from Lawrenceville, GA: "I have used all sorts of strange things for candida the only two things that have seemed to work are cayenne pepper!! and dr. natura colon cleanse -- you're supposed to use that for three mths I only used it for one. But I will let you know. I tried the pepper one day after reading all about dif. cures and realized oh yeah parasites come along with candida so you have to kill those off too!!! and cayenne pepper is a great thing for that. I had a really bad metalic taste in my mouth got dehydrated confused my eyes were foggy like I'd been swimming in clorine so I tried the pepper and it knocked it out almost immediately!!! I should probly do a a metal cleanse and a kidney cleanse also!!!"
[WARNING!] 05/26/2008: Jasmine from Chicago, IL: "This is just a warning to all cayenne users. There are only a few categories of herbs, the most cautionary one is heated ones like ginger and cayenne. There are also bitter herbs and sweet herbs. Heated herbs can actually raise your body temperature a few points.
In cases of mild fever, this isn't dangerous, but if you have a high fever, please do not use hot spices in LARGE quantity. A little as a spice in your food is fine, but using it medicinally can involve much more than you would ever ingest normally.
Many remedies for chills, frostbite, hypothermia, and similar "cold" conditions use these heated herbs due to this reason. They warm you up.
Always monitor your body temperature and discontinue the cayenne if your temperature is turning into a high fever. Use your common sense. Heated herbs are sometimes used as fever breakers, just as some would cover their loved one in blankets to "break" their fever. But when a fever becomes too high, heat is a bad idea. There are other sweet and bitter herbal remedies for sore throats and the like that can work just as well. So please take caution in using heated herbs with fevers.
As with any herbal use, there are always precautions we must take to ensure our safety. This is one of those measures I hope everyone is aware of."
[YEA] 02/25/2011: William from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada replies: "Hi Jasmine,
You are definitely wrong regarding cayenne pepper. I've been filling my own "00" gel caps with cayenne pepper for a year now, with no side affects. I take it orally now. This is the most beneficial way to do it. But you must start out with organic cayenne pepper at about 40, 000SHU (heat units) by taking 1/8 tsp. In 4 oz. Room temp. Distilled water, after every meal and build up to hotter pepper. DO NOT TAKE IT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH! YOU WILL REGRET IT! I am now taking 1 level tsp. of organic cayenne pepper @ 90,000SHU in 4 oz. of distilled water after every meal. I can even swirl it around in my mouth for a while. You will get used to it... Trust me. I suggest you go to this site and read all about cayenne pepper.
This spice/herb is truly amazing.
I am 66 years old and I've never felt better in my life. I cayenne pepper was $50.00 a pound (which it isn't) I would still buy a pound every month.
Thanks for listening..."
01/20/2008: John from Panama City, FL: "Someone offered this advice to hunters (and anyone else looking to keep their feet warm): sprinkle cayenne in your socks. It DOES work. However, DIABETICS BE WARNED: you should be careful using any topical treatment which provides heat, be it medicinal or homeopathic (this includes cayenne, IcyHot or similar items, electric heating pads, etc.). Because diabetics often suffer from poor circulation and skin issues, using such items can produce burning, and since diabetics often do not heal as quickly, this can become a serious medical issue."
06/01/2007: Karenna from SF, CA: "Cayenne is NOT unsafe per one of your feedback customers. I recently found your website in some research I am doing on Cayenne and Lymph, but was a little disconcerted to see that you published someone's testimonial warning others not to use cayenne if they do not want their blood thinned.
Cayenne is used in midwifery and in other instances when needed to stop hemorrhaging, and has the ability to correct and balance both ends of many circulation issues. It will assist in dissolving clots as well as stopping bleeding, and it will -- over time -- correct both high and low blood pressure.
I suggest to all readers that when it comes to benefits and contraindications of herbs and medications, that they exhaustive research, or at least more than they think is necessary, to discover what they need to know for their particular situation or those for whom they are caring. [EC: Thanks, Karenna. We appreciate your clarification!]"
[YEA] 10/01/2010: Schrimsh from Seffner, Florida replies: "I have had personal experience with cayenne for stopping hemorrhaging. Immediately after the birth of my second child, I began hemorrhaging pretty badly. The midwife tried everything she could think of to get it to stop, but it wouldn't. Finally, on the insistence of the birth assistant, they gave me two full droppers (not two drops) of cayenne tincture. The bleeding stopped instantly. My mouth was on fire, but at least I was safe."
01/03/2011: Mary from Modena, Italy replies: "Hi Karenna, I have problems with varicose veins and started using the Cayenne pepper against the symptoms. I read on a site to take a teaspoon of Cayenne pepper powder in warm water 2 to 3 times a day (starting with 1/8 of a teaspoon slowly building up to the full amount). I was wondering if there are any negative side effects of this on my health if I would take the Cayenne pepper like this long-term? Please let me know as I'm very unsure about how to proceed, as it's helping me a lot but I don't know if it could harm me! Thanks so much!"
03/22/2007: Ava from Detroit, Michigan: "Cayenne Pepper - I just think there should be a notation that it is a natural blood thinner. I was going to try it, but after noting that, couldn't."
[WARNING!] 02/18/2007: Amy from New Haven, CT: "Love your site but wanted to let you know that the reason you are supposed to stop taking cayenne pepper before surgery has nothing whatsoever to do with inflammation (which in most cases it doesn't cause anyhow). The reason is that Cayenne Pepper is a very effective blood thinner and so, like aspirin, you don't take it prior to surgery, to ensure minimal blood loss."Replies
02/22/2011: Andrew from Williams Lake, Bc, Canada replies: "Although Cayenne does thin the blood, I have read in several places that it greatly aids in blood coagulation, so that would indicate that it is a good thing prior to surgury, and it is often used to help people stop bleeding when wounded. So, with a little more reading you maybe should retract your misleading statement. Thanks. A."
12/18/2012: Cate from Sacramento, California replies: "Deeper research yet would show that Cayenne is a blood thinner UNTIL oxygen comes into the equation. Once that happens coagulation is the opposing result. I could get very scientific in my explanation but for those of you confused as to how it can accomplish both, study harder yet..."
Cayenne Pepper Side Effects
[SIDE EFFECTS] 02/05/2012: Cameron from Brisbane, Qld, Australia: "I have started taking Cayenne Pepper, I do not know the strength and have a question for some one who knows a bit about it.
I am taking 1/2 a tsp in hot water, straight after taking it my Blood Pressure is going to 150 90 and my pulse over 90. It varies but I am very concerned, I feel dizzy as I write this and and will take my blood pressure again then go and lie down.
Can anyone tell me if this is typical, does it stop some time after getting used to taking it?
My normal BP is 127/75 and pulse between 64 and 72."Replies
02/06/2012: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Cameron, I got a fright the first time I took my bp (20mins) after taking cayenne as it was already raised and I had expected it to start to go down but found it was higher than before taking it. In about 2 hrs it was ok. I have tested it on 2 other occasions when my bp was normal before taking the cayenne and it rose a bit both times but within approx hour it was back to normal. I never had the dizzy feeling that you've had.
Make sure you have a good quality cayenne as some time back there were reports of colouring being added to some cayenne batches. If you have some tabasco sauce add a few drops to water and see how you go with that."
02/06/2012: Mmsg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "Cameron: pls take MUCH less! I take only a few grains and it's still helpful."
02/10/2012: Cameron from Brisbane, Qld, Australia replies: "Thanks folks, I have backed off to 1/4 teaspoon of Cayenne in Hot Water with Manuka Honey to sweeten it. My BP is now 122/75 in the morning, my pulse about 60. I do not have the large spike in BP after taking the Cayenne and I am losing weight, have more energy and I really think my eyes are better(my computer screen seems sharper). I think you really need to start off small and build up, I would guess my 1/4 tsp is about right."
02/10/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Hi Cameron, interesting that Cayenne Pepper and Manuka Honey in water not only changed your BP for the better but also your eyesight.... I am now trying Gavin's advice for the eyesight, orange and lemon juice with a bit of ACV. I only started today so I can't say anything yet but the taste was surprisingly good and it can't hurt. If that doesn't seem to work in awhile I might try your suggestion but indeed only with a bit of Cayenne Pepper. Starting small is a rule everybody should abide by but unfortunately too often we are so eager to get better that we make things worse! I so wish my bad eyesight would get better because nowadays I not only have the same awful myopia that I have always had but also difficulty to read if my contact lenses or glasses for the myopia are sharp enough. As if one was not a terrible bother now I have both! I have tried natural therapies, done a lot of exercises but nothing ever worked other than orthokeratological lenses and my eyes got a lot better, no doubt about that but when I ran out of money to go on with the therapy my eyes got even worse than they were before. I still regret deeply having done it!"
05/07/2010: Wayne D from Ft Myers, Fla: "I've read all the positive effects of Cayenne Pepper. I find the easiest way to take it is 1-2 teaspoons of "hot sauce" mixed in tomato or V-8 juice. Is this way effective?"Replies
08/20/2011: William James from Seattle, Wa replies: "I ingest cayenne through a tasty blended drink I call Bill's Spice Juice:
1 whole lemon and/or lime 1 tray of ice Orange Juice (or orange concentrate) 1 tsp Cayenne 1-2 tsp powdered ginger water Blend till smoothOptional delicious variations to the above recipe add: spinach and banana or berry jam or frozen berries.
The addition of powered ginger and jam alters the drink in a tropical manner. I find this drink so tasty, I can't wait to come home to drink it. I've been drinking it since June 2011 and I noticed (on August 14) that my tendon & joint pain I've suffered with for four years now has vanished."
[YEA] 11/22/2011: Rejjie from Derry, Nh replies: "Thank you for this wonderful recipe. This drink is really great and effective. It tastes very good with spinach and bananas. Has brought my inflammation down and has a cleansing effect too. Love it."
05/14/2012: Belady from Somewhere In, Or replies: "Adding another tsp of turmeric makes for additional wellness.."
08/08/2009: Simone33 from Burlington, Nc: "I just wanted to comment that I know a great way of getting the cayenne down; pour it on cottage cheese. It goes down very easily with very little burn at all! I also add chopped eggs to it sometimes just to oomph it up a bit. I guess you could also chase it with water since this seems to be the rule here."Replies
07/07/2011: Edwin from Legaspi City, Philippines replies: "To cayenne users. Lets just use the recommended dosage of using or taking it, by the expert. 1tsp for 8ounces of warm or hot destilled water, to be taken every after meal. So be it, to avoid over or under dosage, ok?"
01/04/2012: Kenny from Paducah Ky, Kentucky Usa replies: "I agree with the one comment just take it like you're supposed to. I take a teaspoon 90.000 units with water or v8... Hot sauce in a bottle has sodium. (as does v8) anyway as the saying goes, don't be sissy, take it like a man."
10/17/2007: Samantha from Portland, Oregon: "I found cayenne a great cure for pretty much everything some time ago. It wasnt long ago that I came down with a bad sinus infection, cough, and fatigue. I decided to boil water on the stove, and add cayenne(open 3 capsules and pour them in), crushed garlic(4 cloves), half an onion, and grated ginger. THIS COMBINATION IS AMAZING. It is SO powerful. The most vital ingredients are the cayenne and garlic, but the onion and ginger are also very helpful. Make sure and boil everything until the onion is mushy, and the garlic is too. Keep a lid on, but every so often inhale the steam from the boiling remedy.. very soothing! Pour it into a glass and drink the whole thing. It is very potent, so what I do is add honey to it and it really tastes like liquid food- like a soup base or something.
Another remedy that I use is cayenne tea- just put a tea bag of your favorite tea in boiling water, and add a capsule of cayenne & some honey. Since I have been using cayenne in tea, and orally, and drinking the onion ginger garlic tincture, I rarely get sick.. and when I do, I can kick it within 3 days maximum. Cayenne is also extremely helpful for menstrual cramps."
06/24/2010: Dustin from Niigata, Japan replies: "Thank you for posting the recipee..I felt very invigorated after drinking it. I plan to do it once a month.I added some freshly squeezed lemons(2) also..very powerful..
12/18/2010: Iza from Boca Raton , Fl Palm Beach replies: "I just started taking cayenne peper with lemonade, the diet recipy, the teste is unplesante, so I thought I could take lemonade with a cayene pill and will be much easier. Then I read here that the body need feel teste before the stomach to receive the spice. It was a very useful information, thanks Ellen for that. This is wanderful side."
06/17/2011: Jasonmchicago from Chicago, Il (usa) replies: "I have figured out a VERY POWERFUL anti-inflammatory that works almost instantly. I take 1/2 teaspoon of Cayenne pepper in the mouth. Wait until the sensations start then swallow. Then I wait 2-5 minutes until I feel the burning all over my mouth and know that it is working. Then I take the following:
- Fresh Garlic
- Fresh Ginger
- 1-2 Ginger Capsules
- 1-2 Turmeric Capsules (high quality brand)
- Fresh Rosemary
- EVOO 1/2 ounce
I swallow this all at once and literally within 1-5 minutes the inflammation goes down. I can feel the muscle inflammation getting the effects of this combo. I heard that Cayenne is amazing for distributing herbal potency to where it needs to go. It quickly circulates the blood and I believe the "powers" of the turmeric, garlic, and rosemary all get going.
It has really helped me out with IMMEDIATE relief of serious inflammation more than any one by themselves or prescription drugs or NSAIDs or anything. If you want added benefit take a hot/warm water moist towel and put it on the area that needs inflammation reduction.
05/05/2013: Peter from Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taff replies: "It would help if I could even find this product in it's organic form, and not from a lack of trying, is this another restricted item, why does h&b not stock it and I started to wonder who controls h&b and why would they sell inferrior junk, I'm newish to all this self healing, am I being paranoid when I start feeling some things just feel wrong, so many great natural products should not be this hard to get hold off, the ones I have got are fantastic but never easy to find."
05/06/2013: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "I always use the stuff from the spice isle at the supermarket. Otherwise you could grow some in pots."
