[YEA] 03/11/2008: Stephen from Cannelton, Indiana writes: "I decided to try Coconut Oil to see if it would help me lose some weight. It never, but I had another interesting side benefit. It has almost completely healed up my severe case of Psoriasis. It has at least taken it to the point that I can pay little to no attention to this ailment that has dogged me for almost 40 years now, since I was 7. I started off with two tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil, one in morning one late afternoon. After the short break that proved it was the coconut oil having an affect on my skin, I started using coconut oil capsules 1000mg twice a day, but had to up the dose to 2 1000mg twice a day. I have not experienced any flare ups yet and it has been more than a few months almost completely (old scars starting to fade)clear now."

REFINED VS. EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL
08/12/2009: Connie from Manitowoc, Wisconsin writes: "Before educating myself I began using refined coconut oil and experienced chest pain, probably from the oil. When I switched to unrefined virgin coconut oil the pain disappeared."

[YEA] 11/19/2007: Stacey King from Gold Coast, Australia writes: "After reading a lot of the different comments here I think it is really important for people to understand the difference between virgin, extra virgin and the general term of coconut oil and why they give such different results.
WHAT IS COPRA OR COCONUT OIL?
My husband is a Banaban islander from Rabi Island, Fiji and was not only raised on coconut and coconut oil as part of daily life but also cut copra to make a living on his small impoverished island. Copra or dried coconut flesh is what is made into basic COCONUT OIL. It is a completely different form of oil compared to Virgin or Extra Virgin Coconut Oil now on the market.
When he cuts copra he first gathers coconuts that have fallen on the ground, cuts the nut in half and removes the white coconut meat. The coconut meat is then usually dried on a rack over a fire (they call them copra smokers) which helps to dry out the coconut meat and it turns a grey colour and has a rancid smell. The biggest and most abundant amount of wild coconuts are found in remote villages scattered across the Pacific and Asia. Sometime it can take up to 3-4 months before the villagers can get their bags of smoked copra to the big copra mills in town. The mills are usually situated 100's of miles away from these villagers. The copra mills resemble a smaller version of a sugar crushing mill and processing of the copra is similar to that found in the sugar mills. The copra is pressed and because the coconut is very smoky or rancid they use chemicals to bleach and clean the oil. This happens in all the basic edible food oils today in the market place. This is also the reason why this style of COCONUT OIL (Copra) processing became known in the old days as poor man's oil or dirty oil.
But for people in the village they only used freshly processed coconut oil and the premium or special oils that their grandmother's made from freshly squeezed coconuts were put aside and bottled for the special ceremonies in the village. Today this special oil is known as Extra or Virgin Coconut Oil and any comparisons to the processing of olive oil should not be used. The term for Extra Virgin Coconut Oil in the Coconut oil industry today means that this form of coconut oil processing is the most unrefined and most natural form and no artificial filtering or expeller pressing (centrifuge spinning -also known as oil polishing) is used. The oil remains in its most natural form and retains a rich smell and sweet taste of coconut.
Today because of the high demand for Virgin Coconut Oil many unscrupulous manufacturers are getting cheap copra oils and running them through centrifuge spinning machines to clean up the oils and also state they are ORGANIC. While the centrifuges remove the smell and all flavour from the oils the Copra COCONUT OIL is a much thicker oil that will NOT quickly absorb into the skin and does contain TRANS FAT. Accept for a higher level of lauric acid it is very similar to all other trans fat food oils on the market due to the processing. If you put this type of oil on your skin it is just that OIL and will clog the pores of your skin.
WHAT IS EXTRA VIRGIN OR VIRGIN COCONUT OIL
Good quality Extra Virgin or Virgin Coconut Oil should taste and smell like coconut. It should be a very fine oil and will quickly melt in the palm of your hand with body heat. If it does not solidify or melt quickly you know it is a much thicker and inferior oil. Extra Virgin Coconut Oil should be in a natural form and gravity or natural filtering of the oil is used. This type of Virgin Coconut Oil will still retain a level of fine coconut particles and usually a very high level of lauric acid. This type or premium VCO should not contain any microbe activity or foreign matter. If wild forest coconuts are used and are very mature trees they retain a very high lauric acid level and the oil can retain a slight golden colour.
While some of the Virgin Coconut Oils currently on the market are crystal clear in appearance they usually are made from the soft immature coconut flesh before the nut hardens. This type of coconut processing usually makes it easy to remove the coconut flesh and extract the oil with fermentation or boiling off the liquid. Because the coconut is not as mature it usually has lower lauric acid levels and the smell and flavour of the oil is not as strong.
It must be remembered that all coconuts when opened will quickly ferment and unless the moisture is removed properly during processing the oil will sour. Good quality Virgin Coconut Oils should have a shelf life of at lease 2 years without any deteriorate of the oil at all. When cooking with Virgin Coconut Oil the oil will fry at very high temperatures. Good quality Virgin Coconut Oil can be mixed in both hot and cold drinks.
To reap the great benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil make sure you know the difference between VIRGIN COCONUT OIL and Copra (basic COCONUT OIL) found in today's market place and why they should not be confused."
08/12/2009: Connie from Manitowoc, Wisconsin replies: "Then you would say that coconut oil that is not of the highest quality will solidify in cold water, while high quality oil will remain liquid? And also that a slight yellow/tan color in the oil indicates it is of superior quality, as well."

[YEA] 11/07/2007: Cary from Phoenix, Arizona writes: "Most commercial grade coconut oils are made from copra. Copra is basically the dried kernel (meat) of the coconut. It can be made by: smoke drying, sun drying, or kiln drying , or derivatives or a combination of these three. If standard copra is used as a starting material, the unrefined coconut oil extracted from copra is not suitable for consumption and must be purified, that is refined. This is because the way most copra is dried is not sanitary. The standard end product made from copra is RBD coconut oil. RBD stands for refined, bleached, and deodorized. High heat is used to deodorize the oil, and the oil is typically filtered through (bleaching) clays to remove impurities. Sodium hydroxide is generally used to remove free fatty acids and prolong shelf life. This is the most common way to mass-produce coconut oil. The older way of producing refined coconut oil was through physical/mechanical refining (see Tropical Traditions Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil.). More modern methods also use chemical solvents to extract all the oil from the copra for higher yields.
RBD oil is also sometimes hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. This happens mostly in tropical climates, since the natural melting point of coconut oil is about 76 degrees F, and already naturally a solid in most colder climates. Since coconut oil is mostly saturated, there is little unsaturated oil left to hydrogenate. Hydrogenated oils contain trans fatty acids.
Virgin Coconut Oil
Virgin Coconut Oil can only be achieved by using fresh coconut meat or what is called non-copra. Chemicals and high heating are not used in further refining, since the natural, pure coconut oil is very stable with a shelf life of several years. There are currently two main processes of manufacturing Virgin Coconut Oil:
1. Quick drying of fresh coconut meat which is then used to press out the oil. Using this method, the coconut meat is quick dried, and the oil is then pressed out via mechanical means. (see our Green Label Virgin Coconut Oil)
2. Wet-milling. With this method the oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat without drying first. "Coconut milk" is expressed first by pressing. The oil is then further separated from the water. Methods which can be used to separate the oil from the water include boiling, fermentation, refrigeration, enzymes and mechanical centrifuge. (see our Traditional Virgin Coconut Oil)
If you would like so see how they process the extra virgin oil, then go to youtube and you'll find it under.

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 06/17/2009: Holli from Kansas City, MO writes: "When I found out the long list of benefits for coconut oil, i bought some. Primarily for my 5 yr olds seizures, but figured we'd use here n there. My acne is clearing up- by moisturizing with it. My hair looks better-hot coconut oil treatment. 01/01/2008: Billy from Louisville, KY writes: "I have been taking 2 tablespoons daily for 2 yrs. I am a teacher and pack a basic breakfast daily, which I eat daily. Total amount = 1 cup cereal (bran and knock-off wheat-chex and cheerios), 1/4 cup blueberries, and of course, 2 tablespoons coconut oil. A larger amount of food would be desirable, but this diversity is better than nothing. By the way, buy blueberries in bulk mid-summer (3 for 1!) and freeze, to get you through the winter. Been doin' this a while.
Simply put, less is more. Rome wasn't built in a day. The side effects do occur (diarrhea, etc.). This tells you what a slob you've been over the years. If you want to be healthy, sign -on for the long haul.
For those from India deriding internal ingestion, read your history. Clarified butter is the clogged artery culprit. Apparently, agricultural interests spread around the world to sell sunflower, safflower oils, etc. as a healthy alternative. The U.S. lumped lard and palm oil together with coconut oil as an across-the -board saturated fat ban. Coconut oil is a different animal.
Observe the effects of oxidation on your vegetable oil, safflower, etc bottle caps. The oxygen in your blood will convert these seemingly free-flowing oils into a viscous material which taxes the digestive system. A material approaching the consistency of varnish passing through the body is counterproductive.
My own experience has yielded energy, regularity, and fewer instances of flu and colds.
As a final word, studies in the U.S. have shown that hype about "bad fat" has induced people to abstain, resulting in a lack, which is necessary to digest the "good fat" . The target of the Atkin's diet was correct. The source of red meat, however, was incorrect. Coconut oil is the yang to the complimentary yin."

12/19/2007: Roxane from Jacksonville, Florida writes: "I've read the email reports you've posted regarding virgin coconut oil. I want to tell those people having side affects from taking VCO that I've been taking three to four tablespoons a day for almost three months now and have lost 20 pounds and feels great. Yes at first I experienced nausea and diarrhea but keep in mind that VCO goes to the liver first and starts detoxing it. If your body needs detoxing these heart palps, diarrhea, and nausea may be due to the detoxing. I'm not a doctor but I do have an autistic son who was metal poisoned due the fact that the vaccines he was given are preserved with toxic metals. It took two years to detox him and horrible side affects of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc go hand in hand with detoxing the body. So logically I think the VCO detoxes me and causes these symptoms too. Perhaps a homeopathic doctor out there would respond to my email and clear this up for everyone."

07/12/2007: Michael writes: "The other controversy with Coconut Oil... some experience a body odor, while others find it's a pleasant light scent. The minority reporting that they EVENTUALLY acquire an odor from using the product, are more then likely experiencing the toxins that the oils absorb from the skin, while other don't have that issue.
Depends on one's diet and functioning of organs again. The skin is an organ of elimination and when other organs are congested, the skin will take over to eliminate the toxins (backup into blood and end up in skin). Did these individuals clog their organ detoxification systems and need more internal cleansing then others that are maintaining better diets?... you bet. Mike G. 07/12/2007: Deborah from Denison, TX writes: "I have read a lot of the comments about the VCO and its problems. i have been taking VCO & ACV (Read my testimonial) for over 10 years. In addition to both of these natural cures I also take 1/2 lemon & 1 tbsp. of Sea Salt each day with 8 oz. of warm water. This lemon/sea salt drink is a natural cleanser for your liver & digestive tract. If anyone is scared of the VCO causing liver problems then this might benefit them. The VCO does give you a oily discharge and gas but the benefits far outweigh the negative. I have taken several body cleanses and the natural, cheap and easiest way to do a body cleanse is to take the VCO twice daily (I mix mine with vanilla yogurt) and you will dispel the parasites that cause illnesses and clean your intestinal tract that when old food is not dispelled causes diseases. I do the lemon drink first thing then my VCO with yogurt and then my ACV & water and I am ready with so much energy to start my day. I have my thyroid and weight under control due to this regimen.
I also use VCO instead of body lotion or hair conditioner. I had very dry hair, skin and cuticles due to a thyroid problem but once I started the VCO it went away. I also make a VCO & Sea Salt scrub that does double duty because it opens your pores of the skin to dispel toxins and softens your skin. I am a 48 year old red head grandmother that looks in her 30's because of this great oil. I have 3 incurable diseases that I take no medication for except for my thyroid medication and my dosage keeps getting smaller & smaller each time my blood work is done.
I have found many cures for illnesses that are natural and have not been to a doctor in 4 years except for my yearly Lupus physical."

07/05/2007: Michael from Getzville, NY writes: "Why the Coconut Oil Side Effects include heart palpitations and digestive issues... I am a natural health practitioner, I have been reading posts about the side effects of Coconut Oil and wanted to share some insights. If the liver is not flushed clean using a liver flush procedure or perhaps being on Lecithin for a pretty good length of time, one will not be able to digest it since the Liver plays a role with digesting fats.
If the liver is clogged you will have undigested fats causing not only digestive upsets, but elimination problems with disrupting bowels. Since the liver is a filter that cleans our blood of used fats, if the liver is clogged, we will have a backup of fats in the blood.
This backup of fats causes the heart to over work to pump the thicker blood and cause possible headaches (small capillaries in brain/ micro-circulation) and bloating (partial digestion and hence rotting), among other issues dependent on individual and what they manifest with their particular condition and body type.
The answer is to clean the liver then introduce the good oils that will then be absorbed to improve over-all health tremendously over time.
Many times it's the order in which we do things which depends on what that specific individual needs. Organs need to be cleansed and restored in a specific order dependent on findings when working w/ clients. Hope this helps shed some light. Michael G. Natural Health Center, NY"

5 BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS
31 SIDE EFFECTS
[SIDE EFFECTS] 10/27/2009: Angela from Dawson City, Yukon writes: "Last night I cooked with about two tablespoons of coconut oil for the first time. I was not aware of it's specific cleansing properties. About two hours later I experienced extreme stomach cramps, shaking, vomiting and diarrhea. This lasted about 4 hours. This morning I am still having some stomach cramps. I thought I had food poisoning and noticed that the coconut oil I had just purchased expired in 2008.
I am wondering if the expired coconut oil could have caused these reactions or did I use too much? I also have had liver issues for many years. Any feed back would be great."
10/30/2009: Kyra from Cortlandt Manor, New York replies: "Coconut Oil is the one oil that does not spoil. It does not have to be refrigerated and it will not become rancid. What you experienced is a normal reaction for someone consuming that much coconut oil for the first time. You really must start your intake slowly. Read the Coconut Oil section and you will find everyone suggests to start slowly and build up your intake. It has amazing health benefits, don't give up. Good luck."

10/16/2009: Jane from St. Johns, Newfoundland writes: "OK so what i wanted to add here is that i have read this whole site here on virgin coconut oil. Obviously to me there were way more yahs then nays in here. I think like anything else some people have allergic reactions to coconut oil. Whats good for one person is not always whats good for someone else.I think you could just try it in very small doses to start with internally and externally. Maybe try it on a patch of skin maybe on your back where a reaction is not so noticeable. and just a small patch.
Internally i have heard of people starting with like a teaspoon or maybe even half. After a week or two maybe up it to a full teaspoon if no bad side effects ocurr. Its always better to be safe than sorry. For the most part though i think with all the positive effects its worth trying. I am not an experienced user but i will be starting after today. only problem is i bought the wrong stuff. Some refined stuff thats missing the great smell of coconut that i love.So back to the store again hunting for this stuff."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 08/11/2009: Bee from Somewhere, Mo writes: "Just wanted to share my experience with VCO. I read about it here and was impressed by all the claims of how good it is for your health. I'm sure my diet isn't ideal anyways and I'm trying to be healthier and avoid all kinds of chemicals and drugs. So I started slowly. First evening just a 1/2 tsp. I did relatively shortly after experience cramping and nausea. I felt like I was going to get sick but never actually did. I'm glad I started with a small dose!! Anyhow I kept on with it..and after that I didn't have stomach ailments until I was up to about a TBSP (about a month later). However around the point I was taking 1 tsp I became sick, flu like symptoms. I had just been sick with a severe cold/flu not even 2 weeks earlier and it felt like the same thing all over again. Although I think it was a detox reaction. It did eventually pass, but lasted almost two weeks, and while it was unpleasant, I think it was necessary. I suspect maybe I have a candida problem or something similar. I crave sweets and eat a lot of carbs and sweets (Bad I know!!! I try to be better but obviously am not always). So I think this caused the headaches, general feeling of fatigue and acheyness and lots and lots of mucus!! I was coughing up stuff and my sinuses were clogged. Salt water in a neti pot helped and I tried the tomato tea which helped some too. But I'm feeling better now, not perfect, but it tells me that my body has a lot of recovering to do. There are a number of things I want to get under control, like anxiety and depression and digestive issues. I also want to get off my SSRI, I've gone through the withdrawal before and it is HORRIBLE, so I know it will not be easy, but I feel with some healthier habits and diet I can do it. Thank you for this site! And if anyone has suggestions to make getting off an SSRI easier please share!! I would also love to see a page on here about that if that would be possible!! Thanks again!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/14/2009: Jennifer from Phoenix, Arizona, USA writes: "I have had malabsorption issues for sometime. My ND wanted me to introduce 100% virgin coconut oil into my diet because of the medium chain fatty acids. I needed to gain weight and muscle. I was using 2T per day in fruit smoothies, cooking, or on toast. Loved the flavor but the side effects were not good. My ND pooh-poohed my questions about possible side effects so I was extremely relieved to find this forum with postings from a number of people who have experienced what I did. My side effects were: severe stomach and gut pain with bloating and tenderness, bad reflux (which I had never had before), heart palpitations, severe sleeplessness, general anxiety-like symptoms, concentration problems, even gum sensitivity . . . just a general sense of continually deteriorating function the longer I was on it. After researching this forum I went off the oil and the symptoms I listed disappeared within two weeks. Although I have no doubt it is a great product for many people, I will never take it again. It just isn't okay for one food item to make me that ill and affect so many areas of my life. The bottom line for me is to learn to listen to my own body and to respect and act on those messages."

I took it to raise my HDL. I have GERD and it made it worse. I also had chest pain and palpitations and my BP went up to concerned levels. I have NO heart problems and see a doctor twice a year. I would suggest only a trial period for everyone to see what effects one might have. I was only taking one capsule and the bottle said to take four. Thank goodness I didn't. I am no longer on the virgin coconut capsules."

I find everytime I cook with it I break out in hot flashes all morning. If I don't eat the coconut oil then I'm fine. The coconut oil is N_____ virgin oil. Has this happened to anyone else? I went to my doc last week and i had not been doing my remedies like I used to and my blood pressure is up I've never had high blood pressure, but I had started using estrogen cream and shortly after started having bloody noses. I stopped the estrogen and started back on my ac vinegar regiment and no more bloody noses and bp dropped some, but now I think I still can't use the coconut oil. Any body else have this happen to them? My thyroid test is high normal meaning almost to hyperthyroid."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/30/2008: Pamela from Otterville, Missouri writes: "I began taking 1 tablespoon of coconut oil per day - really good in oatmeal. Only problem was that I was also on a Candida cleanse at the same time, and I had a reaction of extremely dry lips - felt like a former reaction I had had to Bactrim, the antibiotic, where it burned my mouth. I think the combination of both at the same time was way too much for my system. I am going to go off of both, and start back on the Candida cleanse alone. Once that is over, then I will begin to try to take the coconut oil again. Not sure if this was the problem, but think perhaps it was. Overload. I would appreciate someone checking this out for me if you have any information that this may be the problem."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 04/16/2008: Olivia from Brooklyn, New York writes: "I have tried using coconut oil several times and one thing has been consistent: when I take it by the spoon, even a teaspoon full, I immediately feel my heart racing. This does not happen if I cook with it. Sometimes rubbing it on my neck or face induces a reaction in my pulse but not as severe as drinking. Cooking is ok for me. If anyone can think of a reason I'd be happy to hear of it."

04/16/2008: Peter writes: "Coconut oil side effects:
1.In the first few days of using coconut oil as a massage oil, it is often the case that the body develops a "sand type overlay " noticeable around the abdomen.
2.When this first happened the reaction was, "how did that sand get into the clothes?".
3. But when it happened to another person, we wised up and realised that it was a salt extrusion from the body and not sand even if it felt like sand.
4. So its a cleansing side effect that occurs in the first few days. After that period it is not longer noticeable.
5. If somebody is experiencing an itching side effect, I would say that that is a side effect of salt extrusion which will disappear as the amount of the salt extruded becomes less."

I took about 1 tbsp. of coconut oil and in less than 1 hour I had intense pain in my stomach along with heartburn ( I never get this). After that I developed diarrea and vomited. Those reactions lasted well through the night and for two days after taking the coconut oil the intense stomach pains persisted. If you are going to try cocunut oil it might be a great idea to use it as a cooking agent as suggested by another reader rather than ingesting it."

06/04/2008: Bill from Cooranbong, NSW Australia replies: "One big topic on the Internet for heart burn is a table spoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. Reflux is not caused from acid in the stomach, it is the opposite. I have tried this and it worked for me. It works for me, hope it helps you."
03/21/2009: Diana from Muskegon, mi replies: "I have had wonderful results with coconut oil! I highly recommend you read "Coconut Cures" by Bruce Fife. The book is out of print but I got mine from amazon. There is a section in it that talks about a "coconut oil detox" a 3 to 7 day "cleanse" I've done it, I highly recommend it. It will take your heartburn away and help with so many ailments! It is my favorite book!! Not a "treatment", more like a fix!!! Read the book and follow it exact, I promise you will LOVE it!"
03/21/2009: Dianna from Austin, Tx replies: "do you take the virgin coconut oil by itself or with food? i also get heart burn sometimes when i take it by itself. for me it is better to eat it on toast with jam or mix it in with popcorn. you can also mix it up in a smoothie - it will make little chunks - but at least there is other foods mixed with it.
good luck! i agree Bruce Fife's book rocks!"
