I did it for 15 minutes the first morning. It was more like an exercise for the facial muscles. I hope to see whiter teeth. I also hope my Dentist notices an improvement in my gums!"

[YEA]  11/09/2007: Taylor from NY, USA writes: "I have been doing Oil pulling for one month. I read that it helps hormonal problems, but i didnt think it would erradicate my cramps. But after pulling for 1 month, my menstrual cramps and other pms associated problems are almost non existant. For the first time in years i was able to spend the first day of my course like any other normal day, not bent over in agonizing pain. And my skin has cleared up as well. My sister started OP and after a week she had the same outcome!! No Cramps. I will continue to OP and wait to see all the benefits from "pulling" the toxins out of my body. I also find that it is VERY!!! important that you brush your teeth and drink a large glass of water after pulling because you are releasing these poisonous toxins and you want to get them out."

[YEA]  11/04/2007: Hollis from Hilo, Hawaii writes: "I've been pulling oil since 10/06 and feel that the most obvious improvment is in my teeth and gums.....bright white teeth and healthy gums that hold my teeth firmly in place where they used to be loose before. Also I sleep more soundly and feel refreshed in the morning. I want to do this for the rest of my life and wonder if that would be OK or not. Is there anything negative that could come from my pulling oil once a day forever.....I'm 65 and it sure beats medication."

Changed to Sesame oil about 10 days ago, and can feel its effect in a good way. Little shine on gums and teeth and skin feels better, too. Will keep this updated as it continues:)."

[YEA]  10/27/2007: Pooh from New York, New York writes: "I was curious about trying this oil pulling that everyone was talking about on the website. So, I went to the store and bought Organic Unrefined Sesame Oil (cold pressed). I oil pulled today. I wanted to spit it out after a minute or two. I don't know why! I hung in for just barely ten minutes and spit it out. I was rinsing out my mouth with water when all of a sudden, I felt sick. I started coughing and gagging a little bit. I then spit out a tiny gob of gray phlegm. Ugh!! Where did that come from?? I feel a little tiny ache in my stomache and throat and, I have a bad headache now. But, my mouth feels clean like I just brushed my teeth. My nose was stuffed up before and, I felt a little congested. BUT, now, I don't feel like that. I can breath fine. Maybe that was what that gray gunk was!! I'm definitely going to keep trying this out to see what else happens. I'll keep you updated. : )"

[YEA]  10/16/2007: Charlie from Portland, Oregon, USA writes: "This message is for posting on Earth Clinic.

Hello,

I have been using unrefined sunflower oil for a little over a week now and have a few thoughts to relay. My experience so far has been good. My teeth are whiter and I feel that toxins are being pulled from my body.

It seems to me that it is best to do the oil pulling in a relaxed manner being gentle in your approach. And it is not necessary to slosh continually. Take a break frequently and just let the oil sit there for a little while. Keeping one's chin up all the time causes the oil to go to the back of the throat and that causes a gag reflex so I've found that looking down slightly while sloshing and then, every few minutes, looking straight ahead and sloshing the oil back and forth between my teeth reduces the gag sensation and still accomplishes drawing toxins out.

Also, I've noted from the postings here that some folks are concerned about being perfect in their approach. As a suggestion, don't worry about it. Worry itself interferes with detoxing. If you ate recently and it is not convenient to wait awhile to do the pulling, it is still better to do it than not doing the pulling at all. I believe the point of doing it on an empty stomach is mainly that the body will be more responsive to dumping toxins if it is not digesting food at the same time, however, the pulling still has value. The enzymes will draw out toxins no matter when you oil pull. If it is unpleasant to keep the oil in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes, hold it as long as you can. If that is 5 minutes then you'll still receive benefit and, with experience, your body will adapt to the experience and keeping it in longer will probably become easier and easier.

Some people are also concerned about whether to use refined or unrefined oil. It probably doesn't matter from the standpoint of removing toxins. Sloshing the oil stimulates saliva production. Saliva contains the enzymes for drawing out toxins. Polyunsaturated oils such as sunflower and sesame may be more effective than saturated fats for detoxing because the molecules of polyunsaturates are open ended and attract and hold various substances. As is indicated, these oils become ripe with bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, etc. so spitting the stuff out and rinsing thoroughly is a real good idea.

Tooth enamel: To get the best results from oil pulling I suggestion you brush your teeth with non-fluoridated tooth paste. Fluoride compounds harden the enamel, making it less porous. This is the effect that is touted as helping to reduce cavities. What is not generally brought out is that fluoride is indiscriminate in what it hardens. Drinking fluoridated water, rinsing with fluoridated mouth washes and brushing with fluoride tooth paste is serious overkill. Excess fluoride, and it doesn't take much at all to be too much, causes teeth, bones and soft tissue to become hard, even brittle. Brittle is not a good thing in a living body. Also fluoride accumulates in the body, hardening what it attaches to, and causes a person to feel more and more stiff. Enamel is meant to be somewhat porous. The initial studies on the benefits of fluoride were conducted in communities where the natural form, calcium fluoride, was present in the water supply. Sodium fluoride is what is generally added to city water supplies and tooth paste. This form is very toxic. Even the calcium form can cause bones and so on to become brittle if too much is taken. For instance, there is a herd of elk in Yellowstone National Park who live in an area with high concentrations of calcium fluoride in the water supply. They have much shorter life spans than elk who drink from sources without significant amounts of calcium fluoride. The elk who get a lot of fluoride develop brittle bones and teeth, which break easily, and so die prematurely from starvation and broken bones.

Saliva contains about 3 times more calcium than blood plasma. It is thought by some that the reason for this is that our saliva can lay down calcium on the teeth and repair minor cavities as well as strengthen the enamel in general. Excess fluoride would interfere with this. And, again, we benefit from very small amounts of fluoride. More in this case is definitely not better. If you are concerned about getting enough fluoride, rather than using fluoridated mouth washes and tooth paste, drink a cup of green, white or black tea a day. These types of tea supply plenty of naturally occurring fluoride.

One more thing. There is a very old form of breathing known as Ujjayi Pranayama. It is a safe and beneficial form that helps with a detox. It only needs to be done for a few minutes a day to see results. It oxygenates the entire body, improving metabolism and reducing stress. If you would like the directions for practicing it send an email to charliepah [at] rock.com (replace [at] with@) and I'll send the directions to you as a word document or as part of the email, whichever you want. I'd prefer to send it as a word document so it will print out correctly.

Enjoy yourself.
Charlie"

[YEA]  10/14/2007: Maria from Courtenay , BC writes: "Hi I've started OP 6 days ago and am pulling twice a day with sesame seed oil. I just lost a filling in my tooth 5 days into the oilpulling. I was not familiar with your site and just discovered it today. And there is the evidence with amalgam fillings. I had no idea. I do have some more fillings, but would hate to stop OP as I have noticed a difference in my energy level, my mood seems to be more consistent and steady and my feeling achy in my body, is starting to diminish. My mouth feels cleaner, my tongue looks pinker, my teeth look whiter and stronger. My gums are not as sensitive. I think I just convinced myself, that I will keep on with the OP as I really like the way it makes me feel. I think the visit to the dentist will be unavoidable, but perhaps a blessing to replace amalgam fillings anyways. Thank you for such a wonderful and informative site.Keep up the good deed. Maria"

10/16/2007: Jake from Chicago, IL replies: "I'd like to alert Maria from BC that the removal of amalgam fillings is quite hazardous. She should definitely search out and find a dentist qualified to do the work and not just an ordinary dentist. DAMS (Dental Amalgam Mercury Syndrome) is a not for profit organization that can send a list of dentists in your area who specialize and who you can interview before submitting yourself to the mercury removal."

[YEA]  10/11/2007: Joan from Laurel, Maryland writes: "Hi, I am in the process of retiring on disability. Last year, my health dramatically declined. My doctor thinks it may be Lyme disease even though I've tested negative. I have been experiencing extreme fatigue and body aches for almost a year now. I started oil pulling about three weeks ago. I'm now only experiencing one or two days per week of extreme fatigue and body aches. For the first time in a year, I feel well enough to tackle the clutter that has built up in my house, I've been organizing and cleaning regularly. I still tire easily, but I am feeling well enough to tackle some pretty big jobs one at a time! Thanks so much for this info. It is really making a difference!"

[YEA]  10/03/2007: Joanna (umsatz2006@yahoo.com) from Tampa, FL writes: "I was quite skeptical at first - I mean, swishing oil around in my mouth for twenty minutes? It seemed... silly. A month ago, however, my sinuses began hurting a lot - every couple of years I will have a lot of tooth pain for about two weeks, then my face will swell, and then I'll go to a doctor and get an antibiotic. This time, however, I tried the OP as soon as I felt the pain, and the next morning my face was completely swollen. I remembered what I read that symptoms will become more severe at first, then abate. I did go to the doctor anyway because I was still skeptical, but I was interested that the swelling happened so quickly instead of the usual couple of weeks. Meanwhile, I have also been experiencing severe sensitivity on the left side of my mouth.

After three weeks of OP, I noticed that the sensitivity has completely disappeared. My teeth feel stronger, and have lightened quite a bit.

As for my energy, it has improved as well. I don't have the usual dying-to-take-a-nap-at-two-o'clock-in-the-afternoon-feeling any more.

I have been using one tablespoon of sunflower oil, twice a day, on an empty stomach, for about 25 days now. I am now convinced that OP is a valid therapy, and I will continue my regimen to see what other benefits will occur. Thank you!"

[NAY]  10/01/2007: Rebecca from Bronx, NY writes: "maybe i am doing this wrong (oil pulling) but for over a month i would swish seseame oil in my mouth for 20 minutes in the morning, made sure to brush my teeth before and afterwards too... the reason? i have a tooth abscess in the top right side... did my teeth get whiter? no. did the abscess go away? no. did my skin become less dry? no. did anything other than nothing happen? no. so i am confused... is all of this bullcrap? should i continue oil pulling longer, for a year perhaps, but people make it sound like it works overnight, you know miracle cure! now i am a believer in alternative medicine... but ones that work... so what i would like to know is if everyone on this is just crazy gullable, or am i just the only freak that oil pulling does not work work wonders on? what would really be interesting is if this is actually put up, considering this is not a favorable testimony."

[YEA]10/02/2007: Melissa from San Diego, CA replies: "In response to Rebecca from Bronx NY: I also wondered about oil pulling. I did it for two months with no evidence of it helping with anything. I was hoping it would alleviate pain from exposed nerves due to receding gums as well as with acne and general detox. I stopped the oil pulling for a couple of months but was desperate for some sinus relief with a cold one afternoon. I pulled two afternoons in a row and had really great results. Help with sinuses, no tooth pain, and major colon cleanse! I figured out what I must have been doing wrong for two months when I saw no results. I was pulling in the mornings while getting ready for work and getting my daughter ready for school so it didn't really have my full attention. Sometimes I would be distracted and would stop swishing or swallow a little (not the actual oil, but just whatever mucus or saliva was rising up in the back of my throat). When I pulled in the afternoons, it was a time I could just focus on the pulling. I don't pull very often now since it is rare for me to have an empty stomach anytime besides morning (I'm a grazer) and I'm not willing to get up at 4:30am to have enough time to focus on pulling before I start my day. Hope this helps."

10/10/2007: Lorie from Henryville, IN replies: "Reply to Nay about Oil pulling. The instructions say to do it BEFORE you brush your teeth. Maybe that is why it isn't working for you."

10/01/2007: FR from NYC replies: "Hi, just wanted to share with you my cure for an infected gum -- hydrogen peroxide. Also wanted to respond to Subashini from Kuwait, because I may have an answer for her about the bad breath and oil pulling.

My story (I'll try to be brief)... got a piece of food stuck in the gum behind one of my front teeth. No matter what I did -- floss, oil pull, swish peroxide -- it didn't come out. I then went to a new dentist last week to have my teeth cleaned and the stuck particle removed. Lucky me -- the hygenist was just filling in for the day and during the teeth cleaning part, said she saw something dislodge but then "lost sight of it". Okay, fine, I thought. That night I awoke in the middle of the night with terrible bad breath. It was so bad it actually woke me up. Yes, I do have sensitive smell!! When I looked at the right front tooth the next day, I noticed that the gum was severely swollen, from the tooth to the roof of the mouth. The bad breath also persisted. I started my holistic regime of oil pulling, then later swishing with hydrogen peroxide. The oil pulling, like Subashini said, made my breath worse. YUCK! I tried swishing with sea salt. No luck. Finally I had the idea a couple of days ago to soak a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide and then hold it (tightly) to the swollen gum for 10 minutes. I also pinched another h202 soaked cotton ball to the back side of the tooth where the piece of food had initially lodged. Interestingly, it didn't hurt, but certain areas of the gum turned white. 10 minutes later the white had disappeared. Glad to say that my bad breath smell immediately disappeared and has not returned. My gum is looking a little better. A couple more days of this (soaked h202 2x a day) and I think I will be back to 100%. I highly suggest this technique if you have a tooth abcess or swollen gums from an infection. It is the best way for hydrogen to penetrate, otherwise it just turns to foam if you swish it around in your mouth.

So Subashini, I think your issue may be an infection somewhere in your gums that the oil pulling is bringing to the surface. Infection smells like dental plaque -- quite disgusting. My suggestion is to pull up your top lip (then pull down the bottom lip) in the mirror in daylight and look for redness in your gums. If you can pinpoint an area, then soak it with hydrogen peroxide cotton ball 2x a day for a day or two. I would predict that your issue of bad breath will immediately go away, even after you oil pull.

Oh, one more thing. You will need to bend over a sink whilst holding the cotton ball to your gums and let your saliva run out. You may need to do round 2 during the same session. Most importantly, you don't want to swallow anything! Rinse well afterwards. Hope this helps someone, somewhere. All My Best, FR"

[YEA]  09/25/2007: Jane from Greenfield, Iowa writes: "I have been oil pulling for about 4 months and have noticed results. Just this week I started to get a metal taste in my mouth and it takes a great deal of water to get rid of it. The oil is not turning white like it always has. I'm not doing anything different. I use Sesame oil - somethimes olive and coconut but mostly sesame. Any ideas what the problem is? I'm going to eat seaweed all week to get rid of toxic metal but why all of a sudden is this happening?"

[YEA]  09/23/2007: Michelle from Winfield, Kansas, USA writes: "I began using acv a few weeks ago at a small dose of 1 tsp. per day. After two weeks I noticed I was sleeping better and that my dreams were better. Rather than dark and heavy, my dreams were becoming more and more light-hearted. I actually woke myself up laughing the night before. I don't know if I can attribute this to acv, but I suppose it's possible.

Yesterday morning I discovered your website and tried oil pulling for the first time. While swishing I could feel some gritty bits in my mouth, like the feeling you get after the dentist has scraped off your plaque but it's still in your mouth. Afterwards I looked in the mirror and could see some tartar between my front teeth even after brushing. I haven't been to the dentist for a cleaning in a year so I had gotten some dark plaque build up in between my front bottom teeth and on the backs. I decided to floss and when I got to the bottom teeth there was a scraping sensation then the plaque came off! I was really stunned and just couldn't believe the oil had dissolved the plaque. My teeth also looked whiter. I thought I must be making it up, but then I came back to this site and read about other people's results and they confirmed mine. I oil pulled again this morning, using walnut and sesame seed oil which I have on hand, also I have a small mouth so only used 1 1/2 tsp. I didn't see as much of a difference, but the oil was definitely very whitish-yellow which I read means toxins are being removed. I have accessed other information on the site and am hoping your reccomendations will help me overcome pcos, estrogen dominance, low immune system and adrenal burnout, problems I have dealt with most of my life. If Ted has any information on building the immune system and healing adrenal burnout and glands in general I would love to hear more. I really like your site and I am also hoping the suggestions here will rid me of the need of spending $100s a month on other supplements. Thanks for sharing your secrets!"

My sinus problems have cleared up after much mucus building and spitting the first few days. Sinus med's are now a thing of the past. My teeth are brighter and my gums no longer bleed when I brush my teeth. My hair is thicker and shinier. I have adult acne that flairs up at times and the OP hasn't really done much for that. I will keep up on the OP daily in hopes that it will clear up my skin. This OP is amazing."

[YEA]  09/15/2007: Tangie from Jonesboro, GA writes: "First I must say this is a GREAT! Website and I search on it often. I have pretty much cured my asthma with the AV and coconut oil... If I leave certain beers and wine alone will usually don't need to us my nebulizer machine either. I'm very excited about trying the OP as I just bought sunflower oil last week. I have been sending infomation on OP to my Mom as I want her to try it too... But she has had pancreatic cancer and has had the Whipple procedure done 3 yrs ago. And YES she did have the chemo and radition that (WE) think made her condition worst. The problem is she has to take these expensive enyme medications in order to help digest her meals. I wanted her to try the OP because of the toxins from the chemo and radition. I have been looking on the web site for any one with these issues to find out what their outcome is from OP after a few yrs of a major surgery as the Whipple. She is doing very well... and I want to see her continue this way. I look forward to hearing from you soon.. And THX AGAIN for this GREAT WEBSITE! I tell friends about it all the time as in fact 1 person tried the ACV on a Korn on the toe... IT'S GONE! Ha! Ha! Love this site! Tangie"

[YEA]  09/14/2007: Francine from Playa Del Rey, CA writes: "I started oil pulling almost 4 weeks ago, I started seeing results of hair softening, teeth and gum health improving, but I after 2 days of the pulling my lungs started filling with mucus and turned into full blown bronchitus, this has gone on for 3 1/2 weeks now and finally I stopped the pulling, the mucus seems less. I started with coconut oil, switched to sesame and then to sunflower (which seemed to be the worst) as far as mucus escalation. The mucus never turned green but it continued to get worse and I was so lethargic I had to stop the pulling. Any advise? I liked the other benefits and my husband is having success."

[YEA]  09/07/2007: Barb from New York, NY writes: "I've been oil pulling for a month. I have found it very easy, most of the time I read email while doing it. I found it is best for me to take less than 1 full Tablespoon, because- of all the salvia that fills my mouth so fast. It has made my teeth stronger, and really white, for the first time in my adult life! I have a very healthy system to begin with - I have hopes that a slight (genetic, psroisis) skin condition.. will finally move on. The process is working slowly on me. It might be more effective if I was swishing and pulling more..instead of holding it in mouth. My first few days had the older symptoms returning.. pains, fevers, aches.. waking with sour mouth. This was a sign it IS working. Now, no more bad effects! I still oil pull 1 or 2 X per day, with sunflower oil. Do not have any aches or pains, wish to see improvement in my weight loss..skin..and continued healing overall. I tell others to try it!"

[YEA]  09/02/2007: Paige from Seattle, WA writes: "I have been oil pulling with sunflower oil once daily (mornings) for 3 weeks now, and here are my observations from my journal:

For about 2 years I was unable to chew on the right side of my mouth because of tooth pain and extreme sensitivity to hot, sweet, cold, etc. I strongly suspect I am in need of another root canal. Starting with the second day of oil-pulling I found the entire right side of my my mouth was no longer sensitive. Beginning with the 3rd day, I was able to chew on the right side of my mouth, albeit gingerly. Now, 3 weeks later I chew on the right side of my mouth equally with the left side – no pain, no sensitivity. And I've noticed my teeth feel more secure and they no longer feel 'loose. And as many has commented on, they feel cleaner and look whiter.

The audible wheezing noises while breathing whenever I would lie down have stopped. I seem to be sleeping better too. Some nights all the way through. I have a way to go on this problem, though.

Milk makes my lungs fill with phlegm which was really hard for me to expectorate in the mornings. This too has stopped. Despite continuing to drink milk (homemade probiotic Kefir, actually) and the occasional milk in my coffee, teas and with cereal, my lungs no longer feel congested and I have no coughing fits anymore while trying to expel the congestion out of my lungs; no coughing either as there doesn't seem to be any congestion. I had been a heavy smoker for twenty-some years before quitting 18 years ago and this is probably the genesis of my lung problems.

Since early childhood I have had the herpes simplex virus in my body and suffered from frequent cold and canker sores. Now, by the time I feel one on my tongue it is gone in the morning. The other day the smallest, single-blister cold sore I ever had - which was all but invisible appeared in the corner of my mouth. It went through its stages and absolutely gone in 3 days, flat. Without treatment the blisters multiply and the healing process normally takes around 2 weeks.

NOTE: As I do not have the time nor disposition to do this oil-pulling therapy more than once a day – I 'pull' sometimes for over the 20 minutes – all the way up to an hour. None of my fillings have loosened or fallen out. A funny aside to all this is that I now find myself absent-mindedly 'pulling' all my drinks, coffee, tea, milk and if nothing else I am sure it is helping to remove food trapped in between my teeth."

[MAYBE]  09/01/2007: Lynette from Keller, TX writes: "I tried oil pulling and probably did it most days for one month. It definitely helped clear up an allergy that was causing excessive mucous in the back of my throat. However, I have to warn others that it did cause two of my newly placed fillings to come out and I had to have them replaced - so more novacaine and PAIN!!! I am sad that I cannot do this anymore because I felt that it would have helped me even more. But I thought it needed to be posted that losing your fillings is a real possibility. I believe that I followed directions, used sunflower oil and if anything didn't move the oil enough in my mouth (I lose concentration and just let it sit there!)"

My congestion, and the amount of mucus that was coming out when I blow my nose has been alot. I started wondering if I might have a sinus infection, so I thought I'd try oil pulling. Did it once in the afternoon yesterday, and once in the evening, and suddenly realized that, for the first time in a week, I could breathe clearly. Have done it twice today, and have just experienced a strange thing: I blew my nose and the mucus came out bright yellow, like egg yolk. I have never seen anything like this, and was wondering if Ted or any readers could comment?"

06/22/2008: Diann from Ft. Worth, Texas replies: "To Patricia...I had commented to someone else about the same thing, but for a loss of how to spell it, I cut my experience short. My sinus infection had gone undected for so long that the poison went into my lungs, and apparently I had pneumonia, but didn't even realize that until having found this site in desparation, and God's will, started oil pulling...it took two weeks for the mucous from my lungs to blow out of my nose a very dark green...I had never even blown dark yellow out before this OP experience, and have suffered with sinus infections all my life. Keep it up, and get rid of the poison...It took me almost 6 weeks, but for the first time in my life, I don't weeze, cough, almost smother to death in a lying down positon, and breath like I have a new set of lungs..I am 56 years old."
