Turmeric is a spice widely used though most popularly on the Indian subcontinent. It is a mellow, mildly spicy, and somewhat earthy flavoring (somewhat surprising, as it is related to the ginger plant), yellow in color and inclined to stain any and all surfaces.
Regular use of turmeric has been found to reduce the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease and may play a role in its treatment. It is also being studied as a natural remedy for arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and similar conditions, as it has anti-inflammatory characteristics.
Turmeric's primary active component is a molecule called curcumin, a powerful antioxidant. It is possible to purchase this component as a standalone supplement. Other organic compounds in turmeric have been found to offer anti-fungal and general antibiotic value. A number of studies are also pursuing turmeric as potentially being part of a natural cure for various cancers.
When taking turmeric as a health aid, it should be remembered that curcumin is substantially more bioavailable when taken along with a bit of black pepper.

Giving Turmeric to Children
[YEA] 06/27/2010: Kristi from Santa Rosa, Ca: "Re: Giving turmeric to babies or children
Turmeric has completely helped my husband and I deal with boils - after 2 or 3 each we have had no more. We mixed turmeric with warm water and milk to drink, and also applied paste of turmeric and honey.
But when my daughter developed extremely large painful ones, we weren't initially able to get any turmeric inside her. So we tried a few tricks that we don't normally turn to, and she's done better with them. Antibiotics did NOT work -- they cleared the infection while she was taking them, then the boils returned again.
External applications of turmeric are also fine for children, and draw out pus very quickly. We use a mixture of turmeric and honey, with a few drops of tea tree and lavender essential oil -- mix well. Note that tea-tree is safe for mucous membranes/genital area; lavender is not recommended on those areas for young kids unless very well diluted.
Here are some suggestions for parents who want to try giving turmeric orally to kids; I hope they can help someone!
1) Curcumin in capsules has a less offensive taste than straight turmeric -- we sometimes use that in our dosing by breaking open the capsules and using half the powder each time.
2) Put some turmeric/curcumin on a spoon with manuka honey (itself great against infections)- follow with milk or another bit of honey.
3) If all else fails, icecream is a good cover-up because it's cold and sweet, although of course the sugar isn't so great
Best to try when your child is hungry! Always start with a sip of water and a spoonful of the sweet stuff to lubricate the mouth and to make the experience appealing! Then turmeric, then honey/icecream again.
Good luck everyone."Replies
06/28/2010: Merryanne from Orange City, Florida, Usa replies: "I am glad that the turmeric is doing good for you,,you can mix it with any oil or butter and it spreds or mixes great. Now, I was wondering why your family is having boils??? I have had some people in mine also, and we have had pets over the years that also have had Very big ones, and pets that had to be put down because of large swollen areas,,,over the last 2 years I have done a lot of study/reading on nutrtion/health. I have come to the conclusion that most of our and our pets health problems is the amount of soy and a few other foods that are blocking the absorption into our system of iodine and a lot of other minerials. After a few years of this the body cant fuction or fight tumors or anything. Soy is in everything, even tuna fish,,peanut butter, canned red beans. It is causing some pets and people to die, I am serious. Merryanne"
01/13/2011: Sharon Ramon from Gurnee, Illinois, Usa replies: "To Kristi from Santa Rosa, Ca - Did you use the manuka honey with the turmeric or did you use any kind. I hear manuka is the best. Where did you get it if you used it?"
03/16/2011: Taking Turmeric from Twin Cities, Mn replies: "Turmeric is outstanding stuff. It should work wonders for whoever is taking it, regardless of age, if the aim is to reduce an inflammatory condition. Children can be picky, though, so it helps to read about how to take turmeric in a way that minimizes its spicy taste. I recommend using it in food or gel caps, personally."
09/27/2011: Karen from El Segundo, California replies: "Whole Foods for Manuka Honey, or google for online resources."
12/29/2012: Om from Hope, Bc, Canada replies: "According to Ayurveda, turmeric (haldi) is a warming spice. Therefore it should be taken with powdered coriander, a little more than the turmeric powder OR simple whey powder to dilute with water in the blender. Turmeric has an affinity to oil, so one can add ghee, butter, a good oil or 3, 6, 9, balanced oil. This will have very beneficial results. Please look up ayurvedic turmeric posts. It has been used for thousands of years also for pregnant mothers and babies newborn.
And always remember, herbs work if given time. The instant meds are working temporarily with side effects that can be very serious. Om"

Do I mix a 1 tsp or tbsp of it with milk and honey or maple syrup per day? I dont get boils often, and my allergies are pretty much seasonal (spring & fall), and my heels hurt everyday and I've tried physical therapy it worked, but it became too expensive for me. I'd really like some natural remedies for my issues. :) Thanks in advance for any advice"
[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/03/2012: Vicki from Houston, Texas replies: "Folks, use caution when taking Curcumin. While the benefits are amazing, it has been proven to cause something called gall bladder squeezing (quite painful) and hair loss! My husband and I were taking one 500 mg capsule per day (with food) for about a year when I started experiencing the gall bladder squeezing sensation (as well as noticeable hair loss). I was afraid I had gallstones but an ultrasound showed no issues? My hairdresser was also alarmed at the amount of hair loss I was experiencing. I even had blood panels done to check my thyroid levels (which were completely normal). By fluke, I stumbled across an article on the possible side effects of the Curcumin, and once we cut back our dosage to three 500 mg capsules per week, the negative symptoms completely disappeared. Just be cautious about your dosing...."
08/08/2012: Michele from Seattle, Wa replies: "What if you don't have a gallbladder? Would there still be side effects?"

Curcumin Preparation and Bioavailability
Curcumin is getting lots of scientific interest these days. Every month additional scientific studies are published on the effects of curcumin on different biochemical pathways.
Just keep one thing in mind. The curcumin used in these laboratory studies was dissolved in alcohol or DMSO. In short, the curcumin was made soluble in certain solvents that do not translate well for introduction into the human body.
The following two papers studied the effects of 3.6 grams of oral curcumin, in capsules, on humans. The first study is quite clear that curcumin simply does not enter the body in sufficient quantities to be medically effective.
In this study, oral doses of 3.6 grams of curcumin a day showed blood levels of 10nM. This is a VERY low concentration of curcumin. Yet, it was apparently enough to reduce prostaglandin E2 synthesis in colon cancer patients.
In order for curcumin to be maximally effective against cancer, it MUST be introduced into the body in a bioavailable form. Curcumin is almost totally insoluble in water. On the other hand, it is completely soluble in fat.
Curcumin dissolves readily in coconut milk or cream, especially if they are warm. There is NO reason to boil coconut milk or cream in order to dissolve curcumin. Never boil anything unless you are absolutely certain the heat will not damage the medicinal properties of the natural medicine. I have no idea how heat stable curcumin is for medicinal purposes. So don't boil it.
Curcumin that is dissolved in fat will be introduced into the lymphatic system with the fat. There is exactly where we want curcumin to be introduced into the body. The lymphatic fluid bathes all the tissues in the body. We are NOT interested in directly introducing it into the blood.
People complain about the taste of curcumin. So add other spices, such as turmeric, or other spices to the mix to change the taste.
How much curcumin do we need to treat cancer and leukemia? No one knows but I would recommend at least 10 grams a day, 5 grams twice a day dissolved in fat. Since curcumin is not toxic, why screw around with low doses?
You must use glutamine, at least 20 grams a day, with the curcumin to make it maximally effective. I blogged on this issue yesterday.

Curcumin Bulk Source The following is our preferred supplier of bulk natural medicines. We have purchased from them before and their service and prices are excellent. Our main HIV mouse, Mouse Peter, is taking 12 grams of curcumin a day in coconut milk without any side effects at all. The curcumin is from this company. The Famous Mouse Blanche turned us on to this company. The company is Supplement Health Formulations in Mayer Arizona. They ship internationally.
Scroll down to Turmeric Extract, 95% curcumin. 500 grams. The cost is $65 for 500 grams bulk, a great price. Curcumin comes in red to orange colors. This is NOT a issue of purity. The amount of moisture in the product determines the color. No big deal. Supplement Health Formulations will be added to our list of preferred suppliers on the home page. Stay tuned...

Curry Spice May Help Tackle Cancer
Tues Apr 9, 2002, 5:34 PM ET
By Jacqueline Stenson
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The substance that gives the spice turmeric its yellow color may help fight cancer, preliminary evidence suggests.
Researchers have found in the lab that the active ingredient in turmeric, called curcumin, can enhance the cancer-fighting power of treatment with TRAIL, a naturally occurring molecule that helps kill cancer cells. TRAIL stands for tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand.
In an experiment with human prostate cancer cells in a laboratory dish, the combination treatment killed off two to three times more cells than either treatment alone, according to a study released Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in San Francisco, California.
"Using these two agents--curcumin and TRAIL--we killed up to 80% of cells in culture," said study author Subhash Gautam, a researcher at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. "That's pretty remarkable."
The next step is to see if the results with this experimental treatment combination can be reproduced in lab animals, he said.
Turmeric is a common ingredient in Indian food, Gautam noted. Indian folklore suggests it helps reduce inflammation, he said, and there is some laboratory evidence that it has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Other studies in the laboratory and in animals suggest the spice can help wounds heal and could also be protective against Alzheimer's.
While turmeric consumption has not been proven to lower cancer risk, Gautam pointed out that the spice contains plant phytochemicals that are associated with many health benefits, including cancer prevention. --- Copyright 2002 Reuters Limited."Replies
MissK from JC, NJ replies: "Can you tell me when I can buy tumeric pills online? I was using the GNC brand but since I read your feedback that it contains other ingredients, I am looking to get it elsewhere. I tried the two above sites and one is not working and the other I could not find. BTW--Love this site! Very informative. Thanks so much for your help."
EC: Try your local health food store or Whole Foods. Otherwise, iherb.com.
02/05/2009: Suzanne from Rotterdam, Netherlands replies: "In India alzheimer is almost non existent and cancer is more rare, especially male types of cancer. Researchers found that it has to do with the consumption of large quantities of turmeric (also known as kunjit) in the curry. Especially the combination of chilly powder, turmeric and cauliflower and broccoli seems to do the trick. If you prepare a curry don't just use the herbal mix form the grocery but add your own paste of vegetable oil (arachide, sunflower or sesame oil), chilli powder and turmeric powder. Wash and cut the cauliflower and broccoli and let them sit for 15 minutes before cooking, as this improves the health benefits."
[YEA] 12/29/2012: Zeeeena from Hollister, Ca replies: "A few years ago after reading Alan from Ann Arbor's post on turmeric and how it is better absorbed in the body if it is introduced with a fat, I began making up my own capsules. I have crohn's disease, and I knew that turmeric helped with that. I had been buying the capsules of turmeric from wal-mart. Didn't get any results. I bought organic turmeric powder from a local health food store and some organic, cold pressed coconut oil. In a very thick stainless steel pan, over low heat, I heat up the pan till its hot enough to melt the coconut oil. Turn off the heat and put a couple spoonfuls of coconut oil in pan. Let it melt, add a couple heaping spoonfuls of turmeric powder and stir it up. I then use a BD luer lok syring, plastic, no needle. I fill my size "0" vgel capsules with this mixture and keep them in the fridge. I take 6 of these capsules a day and I feel great. It helps with bloating and a general all over feeling of well being.
Hubby at one point had blood in his urine. Went to the doc and they did a ct scan and found a suspicious spot on his bladder. We then asked for a referral to Stanford for follow up. That appointment was about a month later. Meanwhile, I began giving him 12 capsules of my turmeric/coconut oil a day. When we went to our appointment at Stanford for his test where they inserted a lighted flexible tube into his penis (ultrasound I think), that test showed that there was no longer any spot and the blood in his urine had long been gone before that as well. I swear by turmeric taken in this way."
Turmeric Tea for Joint Pain
"RECIPE FOR RELIEVING JOINT PAIN
Gurudev Khar Khalsa, a Sat Nam Rasayan healer and Kundalini Yoga teacher in Los Angeles sent us this Ayurvedic tea for lubricating the joints. Gurudev tells us that the almond oil is a very important part of this recipe. Turmeric is called "the internal healer" in Ayurveda. Turmeric is also a blood purifier and is best known for its ability to help the female reproductive organs. Some research indicates that turmeric may be of value in preventing diabetes and cancer.
1/8 teaspoon turmeric, 3 cardamom pods (optional), 1/4 cup water. Simmer 5 to 7 minutes, then add : 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons almond oil (cold pressed). Bring just to the boiling point (but do not boil). Add honey or maple syrup to taste. Sip slowly as a hot tea."
04/22/2011: Faye from Sparta, NC replies: "I am interested in trying tumeric tea for joint pain and have a question. Can this tea be made ahead as instructed and then reheated to a simmer in the microwave or would that destroy some of the properties of the components. Also, how often do you recommend that this be taken? Thank you."
03/09/2012: Kace from Denver, Co replies: "Regarding the use of microwave ovens, here is some info found on website "spirit health synergies dot com."
Text bolded below highlights the reversal of positive influences that turmeric tea has which would be affected by the microwaves:
1. Heating prepared meats in a microwave sufficiently for human consumption created:
* d-Nitrosodiethanolamine (a well-known cancer-causing agent)
* Destabilization of active protein biomolecular compounds
* Creation of a binding effect to radioactivity in the atmosphere
* Creation of cancer-causing agents within protein-hydrosylate compounds in milk and cereal grains;
2. Microwave emissions also caused alteration in the catabolic (breakdown) behavior of glucoside and galactoside elements within frozen fruits when thawed in this way;
3. Microwaves altered catabolic behavior of plant-alkaloids when raw, cooked or frozen vegetables were exposed for even very short periods;
4. Cancer-causing free radicals were formed within certain trace-mineral molecular formations in plant substances, especially in raw root vegetables;
5. Ingestion of micro-waved foods caused a higher percentage of cancerous cells in blood;
6. Due to chemical alterations within food substances, malfunctions occurred in the lymphatic system, causing degeneration of the immune systems capacity to protect itself against cancerous growth;
7. The unstable catabolism of micro-waved foods altered their elemental food substances, leading to disorders in the digestive system;
8. Those ingesting micro-waved foods showed a statistically higher incidence of stomach and intestinal cancers, plus a general degeneration of peripheral cellular tissues with a gradual breakdown of digestive and excretory system function;
9. Microwave exposure caused significant decreases in the nutritional value of all foods studied, particularly:
* A decrease in the bioavailability of B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotrophics
* Destruction of the nutritional value of nucleoproteins in meats
* Lowering of the metabolic activity of alkaloids, glucosides, galactosides and nitrilosides (all basic plant substances in fruits and vegetables)
* Marked acceleration of structural disintegration in all foods."
[YEA] 09/01/2009: Rebekah from Athens, Ga: "WOW. For about 3 weeks now I have been taking 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric every day. My allergies are GONE. It worked in a matter of days. It works so well that I can hardly remember how bad my allergies used to be. I know that I was miserable and I was trying all kinds of over-the-counter crap from the pharmacy that wasn't working or made me feel worse. But turmeric... ahhhhh what relief!!! I used to have to sleep with a roll of toilet paper next to my head because I would wake up and blow my nose 6 or 7 times in the night. None of that now!!! No symptoms at ALL now unless I forget to drink my turmeric tea for 2 days.
This is how I take it: dissolve 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder in hot water (I get the powder from the spice section in my natural food store). I add a tiny amount of coconut oil because I read that turmeric works better if you take it with a little fat. Then I add a spoonful of blackstrap molasses because I like the taste. Keep stirring as you drink it so that the spice doesn;t settle at the bottom. I drink this any time during the day, just once a day. I had allergy problems my whole life- allergic to everything. Now I never even sneeze!!!!! I am so thankful. Hope this helps someone else.
12/30/2009: Nirinjan from Traverse City, Michigan replies: "a tincture or tea of the stinging nettles plant works well for allergies, too"
[YEA] 09/08/2008: Carolyn from Northwest, Ohio: "I vote "yea" for Turmeric as a cure for allergies:
I suffered from hayfever type allergies seemingly constantly since we moved to our new house in Jan of '07. During that summer, my symptoms were so severe I couldn't be outside for 5 minutes without having a severe hayfever attack. I took OTC meds daily but they were getting harder to buy as they all got moved behind the pharmacy counter, plus they took hours to start working.
I sought out earth clinic and wrote down my top 5 cures for allergies, thinking I would start trying them in the spring of '08. But in the Winter of '07 I rescued a rabbit that needed to eat hay twice a day. Of course I was allergic! I decided to try Turmeric as it was the cheapest remedy. I started taking 2 capsules a day (720 mg caps) in February '08. Within 5 days I noticed a great improvement. After a few months with this regime, I started noticing my allergies getting less severe and less frequent. After 4 months, my husband told me, "You don't have allergies anymore!"
Now, 7 full months later (and past pollen season), I am down to 1 capsule per day as maintenance, and take an extra one if I have congestion. I am so thankful for this simple cure! The world is open to me again: I can go outside without bringing a snot rag. I can brush my cats daily with no symptoms. I can clean the cat litter without having a reaction to the dust. I can feed my rabbit and not suffer. I was able to bring my feather bed back out of storage and use it with confidence cause I'm not allergic to it anymore! I do still have problems with mold when it rains, but just clogged sinuses not the severe reaction I used to get. An extra turmeric capsule and I'm fine. Gotta love it!"
[YEA] 07/08/2008: Aster from Vancouver Island, Canada: "The infection is nearly gone!
I wanted to share, as well, that I have very bad seasonal allergies requiring daily anti-histamine treatment, plus eye drops and nasal spray. As a side effect of taking the turmeric capsules (I must assume as nothing else has changed), I do not have allergies today. It is very hot and dry and I was in the garden for hours today... it is the height of allergy season. I realized I had not taken anti-histamines for two days but have no allergies. I really didn't expect that!!!!"
[YEA] 01/19/2008: Shane Murphy from Chicago, IL: "I am a severe allergy sufferer but I am taking turmeric and its helping alot I hope this continues to help me, I am currently taking it for my allergies it completly stoped them, Thanks so much. Sincerly, Shane Murphy"
[YEA] 01/11/2007: Lorelei from Utah: "I'm so glad I read about turmeric for allergies. It seems too simple, but after trying and failing with ACV and honey, the turmeric worked miracles! Every time I stop taking it, the allergies come back. I'm allergic to our 2 dogs and cat, dust, and practically every plant out there. I was popping pills and snorting drugs daily, so the fact that this works is amazing. Two months pill free -- we'll see when spring hits! At first I was putting it in my drinks and whatever food I could, but now I fill gel capsules with turmeric, and take 2 to 5 a day (up to a tsp worth), depending on how sneezy I am. If I do it regularly, I can get away with only 1 or 2 capsules a day. You can also buy capsules, but they seemed pretty expensive (as long as you don't mind staining your fingers yellow to make your own). Sometimes I take a little extra Vit C too, depending on how I am feeling, but it doesn't seem to matter too much for me. As a side note, if your eyes get itchy, put a wet chamomile tea bag on them. That seems to help too."Replies
08/30/2008: Abby from S.F. Circeo, Italy replies: "For two days I'm on Tumeric. I would like to know how long it takes for one to see results on allergies. My eyes are always attacked by them. Another thing I notice I sweat alot could it be the tumeric? Thanks"
[YEA] 07/23/2006: Betty from Wheeling, WV: "I started taking increased doses of Vitamin C a number of years ago at my doctor's recommendation for a tendency to bruise easily. One of the other unexpected benefits is that my sinuses cleared up. I used to wake up sneezing and would continue throughout the morning, sometimes through the entire day, year round. After experimenting with different dosages, I am now on a maintenance level of 2000 mg of Vitamin C daily and this keeps my allergies under control usually 50-51 weeks out of the year. Occasionally, I may have a flare-up and need something else. When that happens, I stir 1 teaspoon of ground Turmeric into an 8 oz. glass of water and drink it. Within 15 minutes, I am breathing freely once again and no more sneezing!"
Arthritis and Joint Pain
[YEA] 05/24/2013: Bridget from Dallas: "As I get older I notice more joint pain, creaky joints, and I also have arthritis (which I discovered one day stepping on teh cold tile, my foot seized up! Just like used to happen to my moms hands). I found earthclinic that day, and it saved me! I LOVE this site, and the natural, holistic remedies. Thank YOU so much! This is now my favorite go to place!
I discovered turmeric, which is wonderful for aching joints, aches, pains, and arthritis too. I was making my own paste, but did not always have time for that, then I learned that Piperine (active ingredient in black pepper) increases the absorption of the turmeric...
This stuff really works! If I miss a few days, I feel the pain come back.. When I take it, the pain goes away!"
[YEA] 06/05/2011: Louise from Southampton, Ny: "Turmeric has changed my life in just 2 weeks! I have had extremely painful arthritis of the hands for about 2 years, that prevented me from sewing, gardening, housework, many things I previously enjoyed. I could barely hold a book or a glass. I started taking 1 tsp of turmeric root powder a day which I put into empty capsules I bought at the health food store and it is an absolute miracle! The pain is 80 -90% gone. I have strength back in my hands and can do normal activities again.
Another plus is a scalp condition I have had for about 20 years seems to have cleared up completely! All this after only two weeks of taking turmeric root powder!"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 01/30/2010: Windisea from Rancho Cucamonga, Ca, Usa: "Hello, To everyone wondering about Tumeric.
I have been using it for about a year now in a mixture with ginger,1/2 & 1/2. I add a little cinnamon, red pepper and cardamon. I just sprinkle it into my coffee, tea and food, to taste, everyday. It doesn't taste bad this way and you do get used to it. By adding it this way it just becomes a part of your diet not something extra you have to do.
I use it for it's anti-inflammatory properties after having a major attack of arthritis. The old damage hasn't gone away but doesn't hurt as much as it did and I would say that I have experienced major improvement in the duration, frequency and intensity of the flare-ups.
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 10/17/2009: P.R. from Pineville, Nc: "Turmeric for Crohn's disease & Arthritis
I started taking turmeric for arthritis and got my mother who is 69 taking turmeric pills as well, 600 mg per day in one pill. If I run out of pills for longer than 4-5 days my knuckles start hurting and it's hard to bend my index finger. I make sure I don't run out any longer.
My mom has been faithful about taking the turmeric pills and just recently mentioned how she thinks it is helping with her Crohn's disease. She had emergency surgery in 1992 for an obstruction and they removed a large portion of small intestines and colon. It was due to Crohn's disease but they didn't diagnose it until after the surgery.
Since the surgery in 1992, my mom has narrowed down what foods bother her to eat. She cannot digest any kind of fat. Red meats, fried foods, nothing with fat digests and if she eats anything with fat she gets bad diarrhea sometimes all night long.
Since she has been taking the turmeric she has noticed that when she cheats and eats pizza or french fries (knowing full well what she will endure later after eating those fatty foods) she has found that she isn't bothered by the fat now and doesn't get the bad diarrhea.
She does take 2 different over the counter digestive enzyme pills with fattening meals to help digest the fat but she has always taken those pills. But now with taking the turmeric pills she can eat more of what she wants to eat without any of the consequences which is a blessing since she is so thin.
Hope this helps someone else. Reading this site has helped me and my family out tremendously. I encourage everyone to give feedback. You never know when it might help someone."
[YEA] 09/03/2008: Sonja from Swanley, UK: "I had knee pain for years. My knees were so swollen I could not even see them. The doctor prescribed NSAIDS, but I am not sure how much difference it made. I bought various things for arthritis, but nothing really helped. It did no harm. Then I started to read up on it, and most things i took contained Ginger, tumeric and others. I started taking Tumeric on its own 3 capsules a day and within 7 days my knees were almost pain free!!! i would recommend tumeric to anyone.."Replies
