Omega 3 Cures

"On September 8, 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave "qualified health claim" status to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) n-3 fatty acids, stating that "supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA [n-3] fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease." This updated and modified their health risk advice letter of 2001 (see below).

People with certain circulatory problems, such as varicose veins, benefit from fish oil. Fish oil stimulates blood circulation, increases the breakdown of fibrin, a compound involved in clot and scar formation, and additionally has been shown to reduce blood pressure. There is strong scientific evidence that n-3 fatty acids significantly reduce blood triglyceride levels and regular intake reduces the risk of secondary and primary heart attack.

Some benefits have been reported in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and cardiac arrhythmias.

There is a promising preliminary evidence that n-3 fatty acids supplementation might be helpful in cases of depression and anxiety. Studies report highly significant improvement from n-3 fatty acids supplementation alone and in conjunction with medication." (Wikipedia)

[YEA]  12/09/2007: Roxanne from Perth, Western Australia writes: "High Potency Fish Oil w/ Virgin Evening Primrose Oil Has Made My Little Boy "Normal" I have two children aged 3.5yrs and 21 months. My eldest was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder at the start of the year (Jan 2007). Because my eldest son is classed as Autistic, the health professional seem to think that my youngest may have a problem. Okay, my youngest is very hyperactive, used to run into things (like the kitchen table) and not feel any pain and he had a serious biting problem that went waaaayyy beyond teething. After geting sick and tired of hearing "your youngest maybe suspected Autistic/ADD" I decided to see a homeopath and ask (beg) for help. The lady there was wonderful and recommended that I try a mixture of high potency fish oil that also contained virgin evening primrose oil that was recommended for children and adults of all ages. Well, after a week of giving him 5ml a day (mixed with food), our little boy is all cool. calm and collected. He stills runs around but he has stopped running into walls and tables. The biting was gone and he interacts well with his autistic brother. He has also started talking again. And to think, only 2 weeks have passed now and he will only improve. Just wanted to share this with you. Thanks,"

ANXIETY

2 YEA

[YEA]  Sharon from Boston writes: "First I took flax, then I switched to Cod Liver Oil from Norway (no mercury, contaminants, etc). I think I was taking 2 capsules a day. After 2 days I had a sharp pain in my gall bladder which I get if I eat too much fat. I stopped taking the cod liver oil and the pain went away. I went to Whole Foods and found an excellent brand of flax oil with 15% flax seed particles. There were only a few bottles left so I figured it must be a good brand! At any rate, I noticed quite by accident that, after increasing the flax to 3 capsules 3x a day, my anxiety and adrenaline decreased. I knew flax seed oil has been used sucessfully in the treatment of depression and bi-polar disorders, but I didn't know that flax oil could also diminish anxiety! Needless to say I am unbelievably pleased to discover this. Last week I took a break from the flax oil and my anxiety returned as usual after a couple of days. I hope others will try flax for anxiety and write in about it. I would be curious to know if it has the same effect on others."

[YEA]  03/05/2009: Jared from Sydney, Austrailia replies: "I suffer with social anxiety disorder, I'm anxious and have difficulty thinking clearly in general not just in anxiety situations.I got myself flaxseed oil and took a tablespoon.I felt better instantly. My thinking became a lot clearer and my usual confused anxious state diminished. It definitely has a significant effect on brain chemistry. I'll be taking it everyday now :)"

[YEA]  11/11/2007: Linda from Melbourne, Australia writes: "Hi all, I have been taking flaxseed oil for about 3mths 4 tablespoons a day so i decided to use it as a mosturiser on my face, i do suffer from acne as well im 40 and never looked my age after about a week i noticed a difference in my skin and it started to clear up my acne its been 4 weeks now and i am so happy my skin glows and looks so healthy, people have started to comment how good my skin looks, as well as the flaxseed oil i use vco with it, it helps me maybe it could help others, you can find it in a fridge in health food shops cost $11 and last for couple months. Hope others find it good as well. cheers Linda"

11/01/2009: Roslyn from Queens, N.Y. replies: "Hi Linda from Melbourne Australia. I take omega everyday and also suffer with acne. You use the flaxseed oil as a moisturizer do you put it on day and night? If you apply during the day do you also use SPF sunblock as well? You said it helped with your acne - did you break out before it got better? Also what is vco? I have cut sugar, diary and deep fried foods out of my diet which helps alot. Thanks. I will appreciate any advice that you have."

[YEA]  Deirdre from Los Angeles, CA writes: "I was taking Fish Oil for about a month until I started hearing about about the mercury content in fish. I switched over to flax seed oil. With both fish oil and flax seed oil, I noticed overnight that my skin became noticeably softer and less dry. It took a couple of days before my system adjusted to taking 1 capsule of flax, 3x a day -- it's commonly used as a laxative! Another thing I noticed from taking Flax Seed Oil along with Calcium/Magnesium/Phosphorous liquid is that I feel much calmer."

[YEA]  08/07/2008: Deirdre from Atlanta, GA replies: "Update to my flax post... After trying out a bunch of brands over the past few years, I finally bought one that tastes good! Okay, so this is an a rare Earth Clinic product endorsement and no, EC didn't get a free bottle from the manufacturer! The brand name is Barlean's and you can find it in the refrigerated section of Whole Foods. I take 1 tablespoon 3x a day on an empty stomach. No stomach problems, believe it or not. This one tastes a whole lot better than the other brands I have tried. Most of them have that terribly rancid after-taste.

Re: the skin -- yes, if you want dewy, moisturized, baby soft skin, flax is the way to go. Takes 20 minutes after eating a tablespoon of flax oil to see the results in my skin. It definitely softens my forehead creases. If you have tough, dry hands or cracked heels, this remedy is for you! The only problem is that effects of 1 tablespoon only lasts about 8-10 hours... But then another 24 hours to go back to the way your skin was before the flax..."

CANKER SORES

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/28/2008: Jennifer from Northern, Idaho writes: "I was having chronic canker sores, usually 3 at a time. I tried everything I'd ever heard of with little success. I started taking Omega 3 in the form of flax seed oil for general health reasons. Within a week or so my sores were gone and I haven't had one since. I alternate between flax oil capsules (6 a day), ground flax seeds (2 tablespoons) and eating about 1/4 cup of walnuts."

CHOLESTEROL

2 YEA

[YEA]  Betty writes: "My cholesterol is 6.33. The doctor said I had to go on cholesterol drug but I tried out two of them and had a bac reaction. So, I went to a health food store "ROOT CELLAR" here in Charlottetown and tried cholesterol tablets but had trouble with them. So, I bought their "Omega-3 fish oil" ...I've only been on it for two weeks...too soon to tell if cholesterol level is down but I must say that I feel much better after so short a time on Omega-3. It says on the bottle that it's made from HERRING. Other stores have oil made from salmon but this store has a good reputation so I bought oil there."

[YEA]  Rebecca from Allen, MI writes: "I have been taking blood pressure medication for over one year. I heard, from two different sources, about using ground flaxseed & thought I would give it try in order to "wean" myself from prescription drugs. I have been amazed at the results. I take a total of 4 tablespoons a day - usually 2 in the morning & 2 at night. I usually just mix it in water but sometimes I put it in my food (oatmeal works well & so does soup). I have been using it for 6 weeks and have decreased my meds from 20 mg a day to 5 mg a day!! My blood pressure has been more stable and MUCH, MUCH lower than when I took the full dose of my daily medication. It really does work. My goal was to be off prescription medication by January 2006 but I think I will make well before then!!!"

[YEA]  Amanda from Santa Barbara, CA writes: "

I found the following information below in quotes from a website after reading that the ALA (there is no DHA or EPA)in flaxoil can cause an eicosanoid imbalance in the body leading to increased inflamation and ill health. I take the fish oil to get the EPA and DHA that balances eicosanoids and protects brain cells. I take 1000 mg of molecularly distilled fish oil to avoid any pcb's or dioxins and borage oil for the proper balance of omega 6.

"Omega-3 (you may sometimes see it written as n-3 or w-3) is the name given to a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The parent omega-3 - alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) - is described as 'essential' as, like vitamins, it must be obtained from diet. It is polyunsaturated and has 18 carbon atoms and 3 double bonds (18:3).

However, from the point of view of human nutrition, the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5)and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6) - EPA and DHA - are considered much more valuable as these are the forms the body requires. In theory, humans are able to synthesise EPA and DHA from dietary ALA, but in practice this process is inefficient. Scientists have therefore concluded that EPA and DHA should be obtained from diet. Oil-rich fish and supplements such as fish oil and cod liver oil, are the richest and most readily available sources. Other sources such as krill and fortified everyday foods like bread and fruit juices are in production in a minor way in various parts of the world."

DEPRESSION

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/03/2009: Calista from Penang, Malaysia writes: "Fish Oil (Omega 3 Fish Oil) REALLY helps with depression. I have been battling severe clinical depression for over 2 years now. Though I'm emotionally & mentally better, I had problems with irregular sleep pattern, excessive sleepiness and lack of energy. I read that Omega 3 can help, so I tried taking it. After just 3 days on 3000mg a day (taken on breakfast, lunch, dinner), for the first time in years I noticed I slept less during the day and slept better at night. It's been weeks now and I continue taking 1000-3000mg a day, and I keep feeling better. I now wake up feeling more refreshed and motivated to do things. I have the energy to actually do them. My naps are short, or sometimes I can go without one. I feel sleepy after a certain time (at night) and can actually sleep throughout the night and wake up ONLY when it's morning. It has regulated my sleep cycle! I can't remember the last time I feel this great! It's amazing such improvement can be achieved with just a simple thing like Fish Oil. Do try it. There can be no harm, only good."

DOGS

1 YEA

[YEA]  08/04/2008: Elaine from Bettendorf, Iowa writes: "First thank you for the amazing amounts of help you share. Through the inspiration of your readers I decided to put my Golden Retriever older puppy on a more informed diet than feeding her retail store junk. I give her a natural kibble and she is doing well. In the interest of protecting her joints in old age I have her on a supplement. To take it one step further I give her a teaspoon of flaxseed oil in her meals each day. After six months I noticed that she is not shedding profusely as a former golden did. I do brush her regularly but there is no excessive hair all over the house. Plus I noticed that her pads are very soft. Perhaps this could help a hair challenged pet owner out there? Aside from strengthening her body she has the benefit of a very healthy coat!"

FIBROID AND BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/09/2008: Ruth from Ionia, Michigan writes: "my name is ruth,I used flax seed to cure my tumors . I would grind them in my coffee grinder . Then I would use about 2tsp a day and sprinkle them over my salad . I found it easier to eat them that way . I also would make flaxseed bread I would use about a 1/2 cup in my loaf of bread . It is very important to grind the flaxseed up to get the benfit of the seeds. Other wise the seeds will just pass right threw you . I did this for about a year and when I went back and had my ultra sound they were gone . I also had a tumor in my breast . I was benine but that also disappeared as well . I never tryed the BSM because I never heard about it working on' tumors until now. I end up have a historectomy because my uterus fell . but I still take it so I don't get any tumors in my breast"

FLAX SEED OIL FEEDBACK

3 YEA

[YEA]  01/31/2009: Linda from CA, USA writes: "I used to get zits after eating fried foods, chips and nuts or the week before my period starts. But since I've been taking 3 tabs flaxseed oil per day (1000mg), I've had absolutely NO zits. It also seems to keep my keloid scar flatter, too. I've read that flax seed oil (omega-3's) are anti-inflammatory so it makes sense. You can use fish oil too, but I don't like the fishy burp breath. Omega-3's are supposed to help prevent inflammatory diseases like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, etc. For those who have a hard time swallowing the large tablets, there is always the liquid form which doesn't taste great but will do the job."

[YEA]  01/03/2009: London from Sandusky, Ohio writes: "Based on reviews, and the fact my daughter has a condition called Lymphatic Malformation, and my Mom has some health problems, I decided to give "Barleans" Flaxseed oil a try. I bought a whole 32oz, and was worried I would not be able to use it all. First of all, I believe in oils. Some of the most healing things on this Earth are oils, and fats, such as Castor, Olive, and coconut oil. I had heard it tasted a little strong, but it was actually the mildest tasting oil I have used so far. Even more mild tasting than olive oil. Coconut oil is very hard for me to eat, and ofcourse castor oil is gross,. So...I used flaxseed oil in a banana milkshake with soy protean powder, AND WAS AMAZED! I could not taste it AT ALL, and if anything, it imparted a nice pleasant flavor to it.

Immediately My Mother and I felt something wonderful. I did hear something about using flaxseed oil to treat Depression, and I have to say guys, it's real.

She said her mind felt very clear, and she just felt a lot better, and I had a distinct feeling of increased energy. Even my eyesight seemed clearer, my mind felt clearer, it was amazing. I felt strangely happy. I felt so good, I felt a charge. I felt like the blood was pumping in my veins, and I set out to clean the whole house! I also played with my daughter, and I'm usually feeling so tired and sort of depressed at the end of the day, I usually don't have the energy. Some of the oil got on my hands, and it left a really nice pleasant scent to it. This oil is great!!.. and I see what all the fuss is about. You cannot taste it at all in shakes, it's awesome. It's the most powerful oil I've used so far. I feel a distinct difference when taking it. It's like the depression is gone."

FLAX SEED OIL RECIPES

10/07/2009: Kelly from Cincy, Oh writes: "To those of you who are considering adding flaxseed to your daily diet: I met a man who was in his 60's and looked 40'ish. he said that in his morning health shake (there are 100's of recipes out there, just google it) he added flaxseed he had set in distilled water the night before (no need to grind) the water softens the seeds and the oil leaches out. only do a couple of days ahead to keep from being rancid. NOT EVERYONE HAS A COFFEE GRINDER SO YOU CAN STILL ADD FLAX SEED BY THIS METHOD. GOD BLESS! flax seed adds omega-3 oil as is found in fish oil. 2-4 tbsp of flax seed 8oz.distilled water in fridge w/ lid."

GAS

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/08/2008: Jake from Chicago, Il writes: "whipple operation for duodenal cancer, psyllium, and flax seed meal. After my cancer operation in 1991 I suffered terrible flatulence - gas in both directions. It was a difficult time for several years - my doctors prescribed pancreatic enzymes that were useless. Eventually I realized because of the removal of my duodenum, digestion of oils and fats especially was impeded. I was better avoiding all oils and fats, but that was not a long term solution. My triglycerides were elevated and I was slowly depleting my essential oils and drying out based on my skin condition. Adding back essential oils (flax mixture) brought my tryglicerides back to normal in the first week but my original gaseous problems were still there. Eventually, after 10 years or so, I discovered psyllium seed that cured the condition entirely when I added it mixed in water before major meals - or before oily or in some cases even when I indulged in pig-out foods. My movements still were not perfect and recently, only the last 5 months or so I discovered flax seed meal or powder is even better - not quite as course in elimination and adding substantially more vitamins and nutrients as I understand it. Either of course would be a life saver for anyone else out there who's an outcast because of runaway flatulence."

INDIGESTION DURING PREGNANCY

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/02/2009: Crystalin from San Juan, Pr writes: "During my first pregnancy, I experienced indigestion during my last trimester, which I understood to be normal. I started experiencing it earlier in my second pregnancy with more severe symptoms, and then earlier again in my third pregnancy, with increasingly severe symptoms. Before my fourth pregnancy, my mother-in-law (the best witch doctor around!) told me about flax seed oil. I tried to take a tablespoon with each meal(3x a day). Even if I didn't take in 3 a day, I still took at least 1 tablespoon a day. I never had any indigestion symptoms, until I went on a weekend trip in my 7th month, and forgot to bring my flax seed oil. I ended up having to sleep sitting up in a rocking chair. My indigestion was so severe, I was having a hard time breathing. When I got back home, I immediately resumed taking the flax seed oil, and had no more problems with indigestion."

Also I find cutting out suger and white flour also helps. Remember because of what we eat etc..... the stresses in our life are given power in a way , because we get trigger easily. we all deserve lovely lifes and are entitled , and because we have strayed a distance from the natural foods that we used to consume..we have to return and relearn how to be healthy. It does not have much flavour and has an endless list of properties. Excellent for aging animals as is is good for skin, fur, brain and especially arthritis sufferers...if animals take this when young they would probably avoid later life conditions. Once I lived with a dog riddled with arthritis and looked crippled when walking...the owner agreed I could give her this oil and she actually gain mobility back to a huge degree and had a lot better quality to life before passing. Oh also great for humans too!"

After 2 days I gave him a day off, the difference in his skin is unbelieveable. His coat, like when he was a tiny kitten. He's 5 months now. I have another mixed breed Mischief (she has a crooked tail:)normal skin & coat, but she will be the next one to benefit. They won't drink water with ACV in it but I'm working on a mixture they can't detect. Also plain yogurt no flavor, no nothing, will clear up parasites. A tip from a vet!"

[YEA]  05/04/2007: H Sparrow from Adelaide, Autstralia writes: "I just began giving my dog an omega 3 and 6 oil to go along with his glucosamine HCL, and sashas blend. The oil is said to be dirived from cold pressed fish and flax seed oil it is a well known remedy for skin and joint problems due to the EPA's DHA's and ALA's. But after having a quick look over this site's list of poisonous and toxic plants to cats and dogs I noticed that flax is listed on it with a discription that reads a wildflower and herb whose seed pods contain poisons. Now as you can imagime this has got me quite worried and confused as to the integrity of these flax oil, and omega 3 oil products that are made especially for pets. If anyone knows a bit more about it or can comment on it it would be a great help to me and my dog."

PMS

2 YEA

[YEA]  05/28/2008: Jonna from Los Angeles, CA writes: "I have been taking flax seed oil for my skin. However, one additional benefit I have noticed is that flax oil is very helpful during those hormonal fluctuations in my cycle (ie., PMS!). I take more or less depending on how I feel. I take up to 3 tablespoons as day starting a week before I get my period. It takes about an hour, but has an immediate calming effect. I would say the effect lasts about 8 hours before I need to take more. I have also noticed that on day 5 of my period, something shifts in my brain chemistry again (ie., emotional, easily triggered) and I up my flax seed oil dosage again. I am going to keep experimenting with the dosages and will let you all know. I am guessing this could be one of the best remedies to get through perimenopause and menopause. Any else had the same results as me?"

[YEA]  03/04/2008: Georgie from Manhatten writes: "After my last period ended, I decided to try flax seed oil (highest lignan count that you can buy) for PMS symptoms. At the very start of my cycle, I started to take 1 tablespoon of flax in cottage cheese once, then twice a day after my system got used to it. I found that my stools were loose if 1 tablespoon of flax in anything other than cottage cheese. A week later I ran out of whole milk cottage cheese and opted for low fat cottage cheese. Low fat and flax oil was harder to digest and my stools became loose again. Make sure you take flax oil with whole milk, organic cottage cheese if possible! At any rate (and the main point of this story), hardly any PMS symptoms appeared! Mood was much more even keeled throughout the month and no breast tenderness whatsoever. In January I had tried ACV and Lugol's iodine with some success, but the flax has been the best remedy so far for PMS"
