Top 5 Natural Remedies to Manage Emphysema Symptoms

| Modified on Aug 25, 2024
Add New Post Comments

Emphysema is a chronic lung condition that damages the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, leading to shortness of breath and reduced lung function. While there is no cure for emphysema, various natural remedies can help manage its symptoms and improve quality of life. In this article, we will explore the top natural remedies for emphysema, backed by research.

Understanding Emphysema and Its Impact on Lung Health

Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that primarily affects the alveoli, and small air sacs in the lungs responsible for oxygen exchange. Damage to these air sacs leads to difficulty breathing, coughing, and a reduced capacity for physical activity. Smoking is the leading cause of emphysema, but other factors, such as air pollution, occupational exposure to dust and chemicals, and genetic factors, can also contribute to its development.

Evidence-Based Natural Remedies for Emphysema

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

NAC is an antioxidant and a precursor to glutathione, an essential molecule for maintaining lung health. Research suggests that NAC can help break down mucus and reduce inflammation in the lungs, making it easier for individuals with emphysema to breathe.1 NAC supplements can be taken orally or inhaled through a nebulizer.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of developing COPD and poorer lung function. 2 Individuals with emphysema may experience improved lung function and reduced inflammation by ensuring adequate vitamin D intake. Sources of vitamin D include sunlight, fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and supplements.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, have anti-inflammatory properties that may help alleviate symptoms of emphysema. 3 Incorporating omega-3-rich foods, such as fatty fish, nuts, and seeds, into the diet or taking fish oil supplements may help reduce lung inflammation and improve overall lung health.

Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises, such as pursed-lip and diaphragmatic breathing, can help individuals with emphysema more efficiently and improve lung function. 4 Regular practice of these exercises can provide relief from shortness of breath and increase exercise tolerance.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive program that combines exercise training, education, and support to help individuals with emphysema and other lung conditions improve their quality of life. 5 This program includes physical exercises, breathing techniques, nutritional guidance, and psychological support.

Quitting Smoking

Quitting smoking is the most important step in managing emphysema and slowing its progression. Various natural and pharmaceutical aids, such as nicotine replacement therapy, support groups, and herbal remedies like lobelia, can assist in smoking cessation. 6

Below, you'll find discussions and natural remedies from Earth Clinic readers for emphysema. The most popular treatment among Earth Clinic users is Jack's famous lung healing tea, a mixture of mullein, hyssop, vinegar, and cayenne pepper.

Additionally, hydrogen peroxide inhalation techniques have proven to be quite useful. If you have a remedy for emphysema, please share it with us!

My husband has suffered from Emphysema for quite awhile now and has slowly been getting a lot worse with his breathing. He has been on several medications, plus inhalers and none of them seem to be helping much. He is a workaholic and was getting extremely frustrated at the fact that he was becoming unable to go to work several days at a time, and completely out of breath walking a very short distance, in fact 3 days ago, was seriously thinking of going into hospital again for some help. , but stayed in bed.

However, in the meantime, I found this website, read about the cayenne and told him about it. I didn't think for a minute that he would try it, but he did. To his and my surprise, he started to improve. His strength has been improving each day and we are both amazed at how much energy he has. In fact he is back off to work tomorrow - just 3 days after starting this remedy.

Taking the cayenne 3 times a day (1/2 teaspoon in warm water) has worked absolute wonders.

Thanks for your feedback on cayenne, and its great to hear that your hubby is improving. If you add a couple of cloves of raw garlic a day into the mix, he will start to cough up the nasty stuff in his lungs.

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

Cayenne 'tea' - I have COPD and just tried 1/2 a teaspoon of Cayenne powder in warm water and I must say that there was a very prompt and marked improvement in my breathing - but I really dont think I can drink this regularly as it caused an equal impact on my stomach and throat............ Does anyone know if Cayenne extract capsules are also beneficial - also info about the strength to aim for and whether they are gentler on the metabolism ???

I use cayenne as well. It does have a back bite. The irritated tissue gives the 'burn' after drinking the powder in warm water. I bought the pills thinking 'by-pass' that. Well, just got the burn lower in the gut. You want the 'help' focused near your lungs, so the warm in water gets very fast absorbtion. I added extra fermented foods, and lowered the amount I was doing til I found a balance point. If it is 'burning' it is trying to kill or heal an area that isn't right. hope this helps.

To Greg from Bristol, Uk: Although you may experience some benefits from using cayenne in the powdered form, it is much more effective if you use the tincture. Start with a drop in some water or tea 3 times per day and increase the dose by a drop or so each day until you are using a half dropper full(depending on the strength of the cayenne in the tincture). As you noted there is a downside to the powdered form with stomach distress and the effectiveness is very low with a very long term use to gain noticeable benefits. Using the tincture should produce measureable improvements in blood circulation within a few weeks. Jay

I use the powdered form with absolutely no stomach burning or discomfort of any kind. Sometimes I put it in coffee with organic honey and cream. I am a believer that Protein and Fat are the two food groups that will also allow the best healing for any problem.

Dear Hussein,

The original poster of this remedy says he used 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 3 times a day. This would be dried cayenne pepper powder. We get ours from an online herb store or health food store as it will be stronger than that from a grocery store.

We put ours in juice and drink it with a straw. It is very spicy. With any new treatment, it is best to start small and increase slowly. I would start with 1/4 teaspoon in juice once a day. Then try twice a day. If this doesn't bother you, you could increase to hte 1/2 teaspoon in juice or water 3 times a day. The cayenne is very hot, but you will get used to it.

I hope it helps you!

I have been reading your readers' emails and I wanted to make some comments about Cayenne Pepper. Cayenne is one of my favorite herbs for myself and my clients. I had prostate cancer 18 years ago and I cured it naturally using herbs, cleansing and diet only. For the cancer I used the John Ray Christopher method of cayenne tea with a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in warm water 3 times daily. Today I still use one or more teaspoons daily in my food at every meal. Just recently I received a call from a Doctor of Chinese medicine who was throwing up blood from ulcers. As I alway do I suggested cayenne capsules using 100,000 heat units plus. He could not believe that this would work but he took my advice and within a few days his problem was over. Of course I also gave him some advice on changing diet and lifestyle. In my 18 years as a naturopathic healer I have used cayenne many times for bleeding ulcers. Cayenne also works great for emphysema sufferers, I have seen patients get off oxygen bottles and out of wheelchairs. But the person with the disease must go beyond the herb for the disease and look at the way they eat and their lifestyle. If they do not change their life the disease will appear somewhere else in another form.

How long did the cayenne user take his doses before his prostate numbers were down? I am currently a prostate cancer sufferer, and I have been using essiac tea along with baking soda/maple syrup with what appears to be some results (a 2 point drop in my psa over a six month period). Also just started with h2o2 inhaler.

Paul have you had your vitamin d level checked? My husbands was very low and started taking 5000 IU of vitamin D3 a day and his psa number is now normal. Check out all the information about D3 and prostate. My husbands urologist was amazed by this low psa number. This was only 3 months between psa readings. Hope this helps and good luck to you. I tried cayenne pepper for my emphysema and on the third night I seemed to be suffering from a severe reaction. Spent the whole night sitting up in bed debating if I should go to the emergency room. Each time I fell asleep I would promptly reawaken, it continuously felt like I was stopping breathing. Googled cayenne pepper and found that this was an allergic reaction. I still have emphysema and have some bad nights but never have I experienced one as bad as that night again. I would recommend anyone thinking of trying it for copd to do thorough research first.

Lung Congestion

After recovering from pneumonia, I continued to have chronic lung congestion. Coincidentally, my son in Texas mentioned a salsa recipe he'd made and suggested I give it a try. He insisted I use fresh cilantro for superior taste. Well, within 5 minutes of making and sampling the salsa, I coughed up an enormous amount of thick phlegm and breathed easier for the rest of the night. By morning, some sleep congestion returned. I made eggs, and since I had fresh cilantro left over from the salsa, I put it on the eggs. Once again, the congestion cleared, with lots of phlegm purged. All within 5-10 minutes of eating the cilantro.

Thinking maybe I had imagined the results, I went a week without trying the cilantro again. The congestion came back. I ate cilantro again, and the phlegm cleared again. I've repeated that test many times since then, and each time cilantro has proven to be my hero. My aunt, who has emphysema (COPD), tried it and got similar good results.
My lung doctor, originally from India, swears by cilantro (and coriander, which includes the whole plant, not just the leaves). The last time I went for a checkup, he declared that my lungs were completely clear and told me to keep eating cilantro.

So now I cook with cilantro several times a week, no matter what. And whenever I travel, I take a small bottle of dried cilantro to sprinkle on my food.

Cilantro (Coriander) along with lemon juice removes heavy metal poisoning as well. Just got that from another site with some interesting stuff... Another one was for getting rid of mites by immersing the hair in olive oil for an hour then washing it out and repeating in five days. It suffocates the mites

Carmen, I hope you got help by now as this info is 2 yrs later. Hydrogen peroxide (HP) should be taken internally as well not just nebulized. It is very important to take it on an empty stomach as well as not consume anything for an hour afterwards or it will cause nausea. It will also cause nausea if the dosage is too strong so start with 1 drop of Food Grade HP in 250 ml of water 3x per day. Increase by 1 drop per day. Hope this helps.

I read a book on water by Dr. Batmanghelidj at the library and it included usage of salt. I drank a lot of water but avoided salt. Most minerals are in salt form. He teaches that when minerals/ water balance go off kilter even by one mineral or low water, then the body produces histamine to warn us. His books are amazing and I bought most of them and keep them as resources . I don't drink tons of water but I do drink borax in my water and take a lot of supplements. I gave my sis in law his book on asthma and she recovered. Cortisol made by adrenal glands has to rob peter to pay paul to make enough cortisol to run from the bear and usually is behind histamine issues.

I only use DMSO on the "outside of my skin" in cases where I want a specific med to go right to the internal spot I need it to be. For example, say its joint pain med or cream, I apply the cream to the spot on my skin above the spot where the pain is, THEN ADD THE DMSO ON TOP OF IT. This is like using a hypo to inject the painkiller directly and quickly into the pain area. This how DMSO WORKS!

DMSO and Hydrogen peroxide (HP) can not be taken at the same time as HP binds with DMSO so you lose the benefit of the extra oxygen molecules.

Hi all, I have just found this site and I find it very interesting. A couple of days ago the doctor told me I had emphysema, WHAT! As I got back up off the floor! I am only 54 go running regularly and a non smoker, although I did smoke in my teens and have sucked in a bit of second hand smoke over the years. The doctor sent me away with a script for symbicourt and said "suck on that for two weeks then come back and see me" like hello I have a hundred million questions! I guess he didn't have the time! Please excuse my ignorance but what is everybody talking about on here regarding emphysema? Is everybody taking some of the items mentioned to remove phlem or what? The symbicourt seems to make it worse or is that my ANXIETY? Any response very much appreciated as my world has changed!

To Sirlaughalot: This doesn't sound right to me. If you can, get a second opinion from a different doctor. You may have emphysema, but it doesn't sound like the doctor took any time to discuss why he made his diagnosis, which he really should have done. Next time, go to the doctor with your questions and symptoms written out. This way if you're nervous or there's a lot to discuss you won't forget to ask or describe something important. Don't leave until you've gone over the sheet with the doctor.

Lots of things can cause lung congestion; emphysema and COPD aren't the same thing although remedies can help both since they generally deal with de-clogging lungs (not a technical term :). I would suggest researching emphysema and COPD and even asthma on reputable websites and also through the library or a bookstore. The more you learn the more you'll be able to help yourself.

Bronchodilators often have drugs which can speed up heartbeat as they dilate your lungs for more air to enter. This may well be what's freaking you out. If you're breathing well enough without it, stip taking the Symbicourt until you get a definitive diagnosis.

If you DO have emphysema, ask about your options, and then look into alternative ones as well and see what combo might work for you. It'll be an ongoing process as you reclaim your health.

Hope you get a clearer diagnosis. Emphysema isn't the end of the road (it may not even be the right diagnosis! ), and it sounds like you're interested in exploring new paths anyway. Happy healing! :)

For emphysema, I use Hydrogen peroxide 3%. I get a thick face cloth up with water squeeze it, I have this tray I put my face cloth on which both my feet can be placed on the Face Cloth. I then pour hydrogen peroxide on the face cloth so it is soaked but not wasting. I placed both my feet on there for 10 minutes or more until my breathing improves. That works for me.

I have emphysema. Some of you might be familiar with a Russian breathing device known as the Frolov Breathing Device. I use one of these. The use of water is used in this device. For those of you familiar with this Russian Breathing Device you know it is used with all pulmonary disorders. I don't use water, well not exactly. The US government rates .05% hydrogen peroxide as "GRAS". (Generally Regarded As Safe) This is the strength I use. I take 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide and cut it by a factor of 60. (e.g. For example, by adding 1 oz of 3% HP to 59 oz of distilled water you will have 60 oz of .05% food grade hydrogen peroxide.)

With the use of h2o2, MORE IS NOT NECESSARILY BETTER!

I have emphysema. I have had it for 10 years. I am very bad with it but about 5 years ago, I started taking h2o2 35% food grade. I took it in my tea and yes some mornings it made me sick but then I just reduced my intake for a few days then tried again.

I can say that my breathing was brill. My stairs are split by a landing so your talking 8 steps to the landing. I could not climb those stairs with out stopping and puffin and when I got to the top I deffo could not talk but after taking h202 for prob 2 weeks, I could climb to the top and talk and when I got up there I would take again. But I don't seem to be able to buy h2o2 35% food grade and they use it in America and Canada but they don't use it here because it can't be patented. There's no money in it for them as it is a natural substance and is used widely.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide for COPD, emphysema: Are there any people currently using Hydrogen Peroxide for COPD? I have a sense of mucous, more like a frog in my throat and inflammation, swelling it feels like in my lungs.

There is very little on the internet about H202, yet quite a lot about Turmeric or curcumin which can also be used, however it causes stomach acid for me.

If it is so good, and safe, how come there is not more about it.

Jan, 35% food grade H2O2 is helping increase my blood oxygen levels from the usual 93 to 96% by using 8 ounces of it in a tub of warm (not hot) water, harmless, absorbing through the skin for 20 minutes. Vaporizing overnight with 1 oz 35% food grade H2O2 to 1 gallon distilled water in a Cool Mister is something I also want to try when the weather is cooler and not humid. Suzannah

My stomach will not tolerate hydrogen peroxide, but no problem with inhaling food grade after I dilute it down. Find it works much better than prescribed lung medications. Electric nebulizer is easier to use, but also carry one in pocket for when I run into offensive perfumes, colognes or other odors. A bottle cap full is the amount I use each time and it doesn't make you nervous like the albuterol and other nebulizer meds do. if you have to use it more than every 3 to 4 hours daily.

Please DON'T use hydrogen peroxide. ask yourself, how can breathing in an irritant - a bleaching agent that destroys cells - help lungs that are already chronically irritated and full of inflammation? Ask yourself, if it worked wouldn't it be used by Doctors? A lot of what people think is working is placebo effect. I have emphysema myself, I am finding the following help: avoid infections such as colds, have your flu and pneumonia jab, keep a healthy weight, eat fresh vegetables, olive oil and enough protein, cut down on fried and junk food, cut down sugar and caffiene, avoid all lung irritants eg: standing over frying food, roasting fumes from the oven, woodsmoke, chemical sprays, perfumes, car fumes, cold air, dry air etc etc. Supplement your diet with Omega 3, vitamins and minerals, learn breathing techniques, avoid getting upset and stressed - learn meditation if possible, and excercise as much as you can, without overdoing it, preferably at Pulmonary rehab via a doctors referral. Above all CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR before trying anything, even things that seem innocuous. Remember there are a lot of vested interests in putting out good reviews online. My GP told me not to buy a salt pipe, even though it had good reviews online, sure enough, I went to the seaside and there was a salty sea-mist...I ended up collapsed on the beach, and my lungs felt raw the whole day. BEST of all research things scientifically - you are looking for proper scientific papers from NIMH for example, the science can be baffling but you can usually make out the meaning from the conclusion, and again CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR.

To breather in UK. It is thoughtful to be concerned about others, but to discourage one from using a treatment that others have received a lot of benefit from based on the fact that doctors do not prescribe it, is ridiculous. Most doctors are simply not open minded to try any alternative treatments for anything. It is often not in their best interest and certainly not in the interest of Big Pharma. There have been actual case studies from physicians using hydrogen peroxide and other alternative measures in successful treatment of different ailments. The use of borax is one such tx., eventually resulting in it being banned in some countries because it was/is a very inexpensive alternative tx. Please be open minded, and if not, then this really is not the site for you to be on.

I have mild emphysema so far diagnosed in march 2016. I have type 2 diabetes as well. I bought 35% hydrogen peroxide. Will it still help me even in early stage and how much should I inhale in throat or nose as well as drink follow your dosage?

Ruby, my breathing problems are not as severe as some others, however, I tried to use the hydrogen peroxide inhalation method, but I was forced to quit after just two days, due to increased use of my rescue inhaler.. each case is different.. And it seemed in mine that the phlegm got heavier in my lungs. It is worth a try, and I plan on doing it again when I'm sure no other issues w/my health may be causing an unfavorable outcome. I wish you the best.. God bless. also; Thanks to EC et al for your caring.

.P.S. Tried to warn you re the 'thumbs' thing. Oh well, I love you, & I support whatever you try to do to enhance this site.

Hi Ruby!

Jerome here - I too have emphysema and have been reading this forum for about 3 years. I have tried nearly everything people have posted here that worked for them. Most of it did not work for me. I think I had a hard core case. I smoked for 17 years and had pnemonia 4 times in 7 years and ended up with a lot of scar tissue. I quit smoking 2 years ago. I used to smoke a pack every 4 days.

What does work for me is Nebulizing H2O in 3% H2O2 and a really good product called Oralmat. These products I have been using for only 2 weeks and I am really amazed at how much it is helping me. I use my Pro Air half of what I did before I started these 2 products. I am breathing easier and my breathing capacity is increasing. I used to wake up congested with thick mucus and now its been 2 days and no morning mucus!

I have had Emphysema for about 3 years and it was getting worse no matter what I did. I don't smoke and the thick mucus would build up and it would take over an hour in the morning for me to be able to do much. Now, I get the most done in the morning!!

Also, I have found that prayer and affirmations have really helped.

Good luck and I will keep everyone here posted on my progress.

My short term goal is to get off prescription breathing medications!

Jerome of Cameron Park, California. I know it's been a long time since you wrote these comments here on EC, but, I'm hoping you continue to follow along. Hope your journey to better breathing and health is going well and would love to see an update. I have been looking for the Oralmat product and can't find it available anywhere. Did you get it in the US? Infor / reply appreciated. Many thanks,

As we all know this is a work in progress and I feel every day I am progressing bit by bit.

After nebulizing the first time with H2O2 and H2orega I felt a little heaviness in my lungs. The next time I mixed the H2orega with bottled spring water and I felt no heaviness and my breathing seemed to deepen. So, I stopped using H2O2 and only use water.

Here's to progress!!

I have some wonderful news. I recently bought a bulk supply of 35% fg for my dad, who has emphysema; he is 77 and was a heavy smoker for many years. He was to the point where he would take a few steps and just had absolutely no wind left. Anyhoo, he now uses a nasal pump bottle filled w/ a 3% solution. He does about 4-6 pumps, 2-3 times a day (for the past couple weeks). I went to his house this past weekend and he pulled me off to the side and told me "Hey, I want to tell you that the peroxide really seems to be working. I can work around the yard and don't get winded at all anymore, when I stop it is because of my hip" (He has a reconstructed hip. So there is some solid evidence that peroxide really works. After only 2 weeks he has gone from being able to walk only 50-100 feet at a time to not getting winded anymore. Some of this will be attributed to the fact that he gets more excercise now, which will accelerate the healing effect. This site is truly a blessing from God Cheers!

Slowryder purchased 35% fg h202 and her father used a 3% solution into a nasal spray and used that. I have no idea how to make 35% h202 solution into a 3% solution. Can someone please clarify. Thank you.

September 23, 2016 update: I have now purchased the 35% solution. And upon reading the bottle have the answer to my above question. The directions indicate that it must be diluted with water to obtain the 3%.

To dilute peroxide to 3% pour peroxide into a bottle that measures 1 oz and add 10 oz. or water ( preferably not tap water ). DO NOT USE 35% - always reduce to 3%.

I just wanted to reiterate what helpyourself from Houston said and that is not to use tap water. Always use distilled as tap water could be dangerous.

You should be aware that I got my dad (77yo long time smoker) some food grade H2O2 and he uses a sinus pump filled with a 3% solution (inhales it about 12 pumps per day) and his emphysema has all but disappeared in 2 weeks time.
