My buddy Fran came to work one Friday with half his face hanging down like a slab of silly putty. He said, in a sad, slurred voice, "It's Bell's Palsy. Doc says it's caused by a virus, will go away in weeks, or months, or a year."

I took him aside and told him if it was a virus he could try some things. Of course he was desperate to try anything. "off the top of my head, vitamins A, C, D, and E kill viruses. So do zinc, selenium, iodine, and colloidal silver. Also elderberries, echinacea and astragulus are anti-viral."

Monday he came in all smiles, with a normal face and just a hint of a slurred voice. "Wow! What did you do?"

"I took all those things you told me about" I never found out the dosages but it was probably a lot.

That afternoon he called his Doc an said, "Guess what, I'm well! "

"I can tell by your voice! The Doc enthused, "What did you do?"

" I took a bunch of supplements! "

"The Doc's voice fell. "I must have misdiagnosed."

Fran said, " A fine thing. How do you misdiagnose half my face hanging like a side of Meat?"

Shan, around here, any earache is treated by inserting - not deeply! - a wad of cotton with olive oil on it. It usually works pretty quickly for pain and after 48 hours it's pretty much healed. Change the wad every day.

I had Bells palsy symptoms recently after my kid got it and was given steriod course. But my right ear has become very sensitive and hurts. Are there any natural remedies I can try for this ear pain? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Jason, that's so inspiring!

I'm impatient for medical care to catch up to Lyme, toxic mold, and environmental illnesses.

My bells palsy isn't very severe, but I'm trying to heal it as part of the overall picture of how Lyme and living in a toxic apartment for two years have affected me.

Thank you for staying hopeful, and sharing your story with us.

Hi, Thank you for making such a place where natural remedies are discussed. Highly appreciate it! I got bell's palsy in last month of pregnancy. Did take steroids but 48hrs later. It's been 11 months and have only improved 50% if that. I have tried massage, acupuncture (50-60 sessions by now), chiropractor, turmeric, ginger, bunch of different vitamins, essential oils, castor oils and heat packs, yoga, meditation and CS (for last 3 weeks). Nothing seems to have clicked so far. As soon as I started meditation my eye started closing which was a great help. But no further improvements after that.

Can you please suggest if there's anything else I can try? Also I read about DMSO and CS combining and applying. IS it something that can still work? or am I too late for that? Is there any way I can learn that virus is there or not and/or may be virus is gone and nerves are damaged? How do I help nerve regeneration.

Thanks a ton!

Was checking out different things for facial pain and I found if you locate the sore spot on face, use your index finger and apply pressure to that spot of 2 minutes. It will cause the nerve to relax. Be sure to message your face and use essential oils with creams. Utube Bell's Palsy facial physical therapy.

Wow! One session is a dream come true. I had a similar situation- walked out of the ER (thought I had had a stroke) with no answers or solutions and went (literally) straight to the acupuncturist. She told me she would get my face moving again in about 10 sessions and she definitely did. After session 10, I got home and the corner of my mouth was moving ever so slightly and when I woke up the next morning, 80% of the movement in my face came back. Make sure to find an acupuncturist who specializes in neurological disorders and good luck!!

Hi, I had Bell's Palsy in 2013. You are the first person that says that is getting better even though it has been almost 11 years. This is great news! Well it probably doesn't feel like great news to you. I know how frustrating and depressive one can feel after dealing with Bell's Palsy. But I thinks it is great. I was diagnosed with synkinesis caused by Bell's palsy about a year after it happened. I visited 4 different neurologist and they all told me that I would stay like this. I see improvement although minimal. You have giving me hope. I am still searching for the cure. I am going to try DSMO and CS and see what happens. I am also buying the oils that some people mentioned in their comments. I hope to get my smile back as well. Wish you the best!

I have a capsule filling machine we got from ebay for about $25. It has saved us from the nasty drinks...with everything we must ingest in powder form. One bit of advise with it...blow it out with your hair drier between fillings to keep it running smoothly or the capsules get stuck.

My other bit of the story is essential oils. They heal from the inside out and permantly. I'm using Idaho Tansy right now and I'm feeling some relief already at 3 days.

I had my bells palsy last October 27,2016. I looked up for a neurologist and gave me medications like steroids 2x a day, vitamins B1, B6 & B12, for 3x a day and physical therapy once a day for 3 weeks. (Included in the PT is the facial exercises) that helps the muscles relax. It was 1 month and 3 weeks I already feel the changes. The droop face recovered earlier than expected. I also researched for best food that is rich in Vit. B1, B6 and B12. Meat and seafoods, dairy products, fruits and vegetables and fortified foods which is rich in vitamins B. It really helps my bells palsy recover soon. In a little span of time, exactly 3 months I'm already healed. I also take at least 7 to eight hours of sleep.

Candy, Bells Palsy is often triggered by virus and low magnesium. We cured my husband's with magnesium oil and progesterone cream topically. He also took turmeric and black pepper 2x a day. My homemade mouthwash will also boost magnesium levels and will halt most dental issues.

In a 1 liter bottle, add 1/2 mineral water, 1/2 milk of magnesia, 2 tsp baking soda and 2 to 5 drops peppermint essential oil.

Shake and use between brushing as mouth rinse and brush wetter. I use baking soda as my toothpaste. I leave my rinse without rinsing out with water as it helps.

Take mag citrate or 5 drops of mag oil in water 2x a day to bowel tolerance. These will reduce symptoms quickly and cured his bells palsy. Ted recommends the progesterone cream in more stubborn cases.

When I became afflicted with Bells Palsy almost 11 yrs ago, I tried to visit my Dentist. He would not work on me as my mouth barely opened. Moreover, I was told that there'd be no guarantee giving me anesthetic wouldn't cause additional problems. Since then 4 of my teeth have broken. I'd previously been know for my "smile" and it sucks. As I sit typing, my face is throbbing, because the roots of 2 of the teeth on that side remain. At the same time, my face seems to be loosening up. I'm hoping to find another Dentist who is familiar w/Bell's Palsy, and isn't afraid to assist me.

My experience is that you are correct. I became afflicted in Aug 2005. I didn't go seek medical attention that day. Once I did, I was told I had a Stroke (which I did 7 mos later on my Birthday). It was confirmed it wasn't a Stroke, but Bell's Palsy. At that time, there wasn't a lot of info out on it. I, too, was told it'd go away. After seeing 6 Neurologists, I was given a prognosis of being healed w/in 12-24mos. Of course, this was being told, "the same way it came, it will disappear." Well, it's almost 11 yrs later and it's getting better, but hasn't left "the same way as it came."

I continue to be hopeful that I'll be able to have my "smile" returned.

Jasonmchicago - If you have TMJ, why not have your dentist give you a mouth appliance? They are around $50-$100 (or they were back in the 90's). Also, I saw a post on EC about drinking 1/2 tsp. sea salt in a glass of water a day to cure Lyme's. Search for it.

I too have read Don Lepore's "Ultimate healing Guide" and have found it helpful in many instances. As another reader mentions he talks about the possibility of a sodium deficiency if it affects the left side and a potassium deficiency if it affects the right side. I had been feeling bad the last few days with tingling in my tongue, swelling gums, occasionally a pain behind my ear and eyes twitching. Very scary! The base of my neck also felt weird and weak?.I only slept 3 hrs last night as I was so anxious. I went to the chiro and nothing. I tried several supplements and natural muscle relaxants? But when I drank some water with some sea salt, it went away within 1 hr! I don't know if this will help anyone else, but I'm just saying my experience and I'm so grateful for it! I will also be taking some colloidal silver to be safe?.

Dental Problems and Bells Palsy

I'm updating a post where I attributed my bells to my teeth that I had removed.. and had a great deal of success in regaining movement.. my update is surprising. I had a ENT do a CT scan early on in my problem.. prior to the removal of all but the first tooth that was pulled and helped me. The CT scan was misread and I had a broken nose!!! I still have a bone between my nose and gum line that I believe is incorrectly healed. I'm pretty much back to normal and believe the removal of my beautiful teeth on one side helped because I it took off the pressure from the 75% blockage I had that numerous doctors and dentists overlooked that was caused by my blockage in my sinus!!! Double check any dental or sinus problems.. wish I would've . I'm pretty much back to normal but now am dealing with getting dental implants for teeth that should not have been removed!

Hi, I developed a facial palsy about 5 years ago. I only recovered about 50-60%. I don't have any drooping on my face, but my smile is still very lopsided. Also, when I smile, the eye on the affected side tries to close, and my chin is still dimpled. Last, every time I catch a cold or any kind of upper respiratory infection, I get pain behind my ear in the exact same spot as when the palsy first started. Do you think I could benefit from using the colloidal silver at this point so much later? Thanks for any advice you may have.

I've had Bell's Palsy on one side of my face for over 17 years! My eye still won't shut, I still can not smile. It happened during surgery to remove a brain tumor, so I know it was physical damage. I went for acupuncture twice a week for six months, but it didn't fix it. I've heard good things about certain nerve regenerating essential oils, especially Helichrysum Oil. I just started using it 2 days ago. I'll post again if I see positive results.

Dear Don J,

I know a little boy who was cured of Bell's Palsy last year with the following:

Vitamin C (best taken to bowel tolerance - just take it by the gram or more and when you begin to get diarrhea, cut back a bit. I think he was taking Liposomal Vitamin C)

Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (I think he took 1 teaspoon 3x a day. An adult dose would be more like 3 Tablespoons three times a day. But you might want to start with teaspoons and work up to Tablespoons)

Turmeric (I think he took 1/4 teaspoon three times a day. An adult dose would be 1 teaspoon three times a day. Best in whole milk with a little pepper. Not the best taste, just the best effect.)

Nutmeg (he held one (maybe part of one) in his cheek on the affected side for hours at a time.)

The way I have been taking vitamin C of late to get a lot at once is this: 1 teaspoon ascorbic acid powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 3 drops stevia, 2 cups water. This gives 5 grams of Vitamin C, or so. I would drink a couple of these a day or more if I were fighting sickness. I think it tastes kind of like Sprite like this. Of course, I rarely drink soda and I am not sure my family agrees with me. :) )

Dave also has a remedy where he used DMSO and Colloidal Silver to cure Bell's Palsy. Here is a link where you can find that information:

Hello Nagesh,

Re your question in dealing with Bells' Palsy.

If you look under Earth Clinic "Ailments" section and look up Bells' Palsy...I have a post that discussed killing the underlying virus which I believe causes Bells' Palsy. The post is a response to a thread under the "Castor Oil" subsection (under "Ailments"..."Bell's Palsy"). I also have an article up on the "Remedies" section of Earth Clinic where under "Colloidal Silver" EC has published a brief article, in which I discuss Bells' Palsy.

The idea of "viral cause" is worth taking the time to read how I cured myself of BP. The experience was frightening (paralysis)...and taught me the power of Silver atoms.

Ayurvedic Remedies

Dear Rajeshvar,

I believe that Turmeric would be considered ayurvedic ? It is anti-inflammatory. Try 1 teaspoon three times a day. At the same time, if you will take one Tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil, it will help the turmeric to work better and it has anti-viral properties.

Vitamin C would be important, too. If you can take it to bowel tolerance (take as much as you can without it giving you diarrhea) that would be ideal. You can start with 500mg every couple of hours.

Please also see this page at Earth Clinic, where Dave explains how to use DMSO and colloidal silver for Bell's Palsy.

Hello Mtui 036,

If the CS is causing ANY side effects...you say twitching on your face where you applied the CS topically....then don't use it. Something might be wrong with the CS.

I've never heard of a twitching reaction to CS and that is why I say, if this were me, I'd question the quality of the CS. When I've used my CS topically on occasions when I want to get the CS down into the skin, I mix the CS 50/50 with DMSO. I get the DMSO on line from Dr. Jacobs/ DMSO. I apply with a white cloth or white paper towel. (Oh, I just read a recent Contributing writer to Earth Clinic...Mama to Many...say that some bad chemicals might be left in even white paper towels! )

You can read about the use of DMSO by googling, "DMSO 60 minutes Dr Jacobs youtube" and find a wonderful interview and analysis of DMSO.

I'm intrigued by what CS you are using. Is it a cream? I don't use CS in a cream. Not that I wouldn't but I just have no experience there.

Hello Mtui036,

About the application of the DMSO/Colloidal silver mix...it is applied on the surface of the skin ...surface of side of face the Bells Palsey has affected. Sorry I didn't make that plain. The DMSO is a solvent and penetrant and will carry the CS into the skin and along the nerve where the virus is causing the paralysis. As I said in my previous post, I had this condition a number of years ago and used the method I described. Use a white paper towel. Not a colored paper towel because the DMSO would carry the dye of the paper towel.

Hello Brian,

In analyzing your Bell's Palsey, I noticed you mentioned the "super sensitivity" of your hearing... Possibly "Hyperacusis" which is often associated with ear infection. Many think Bell's is caused by a virus which takes off in the nerve going from base of the mouth toward the ear on both sides of the face. Usually the Bell's virus (and can be many different kinds of viruses) come from the mouth after dental work, but the virus can also come from the ear into the eustacian tube and then into mouth and finally into the nerve.

You said you are taking Lysine, a virus killer. So from what you said you may have gotten Bell's from a viral infection, and possibly from the ear, given your probable "Hyperacusis. " The Lysine is helping kill the virus.

Google "hyperacusis caused by virus" or "super sensitive hearing viral causation" and lots of sites will come up demonstrating the connection.

The best way to kill a virus is with Colloidal Silver. I make my own so I know the concentration is strong. Once I did get a right side Bell's conditon, and applied CS mixed in with about equal amount of DMSO as a carrier and penetrant and literally in fifteen minutes the frozen right side was 90 percent back to normal. If the virus is allowed to live a long time you can have nerve damage so the various vitamins you are taking to help nerve growth is wise. But consider the CS plus DMSO formula.

I know for me Bell's Palsy had nothing to do with chicken pox, shingles, cold sores virus etc. I've never suffered from any of that. I also don't have Lyme's Disease. Dental doesn't seem to be a concern either. I did help lift a person who grabbed my neck to assist in the lifting, and then 2 days later woke up with a pain in the base of my skull and cramps behind my ear. About 15 minutes later my mouth went numb and I had trouble blinking my eye. Next thing I knew, my right side was paralyzed from moving but I never lost any feeling. My hearing in my right ear became super-human. Someone whispers and it sounds like they are screaming. I tried a chiropractor and it seemed to make matters worse for me, but I don't want to discourage anyone from seeking that as an option. In my case I believed a pinched nerve or something like that was the culprit. So I started a daily routine 6 weeks ago. WATER ONLY. I've drank nothing but water. Organic fruit and vegetables. Started taking sublingual B-12, B-12 tabs, Lysine, Calcium, Flax Oil, Omega-3 and B-6. These I found at Walmart for reasonable prices. I doubled the recommended doses for myself, and I took as much B-12 as I could stand because it's supposed to be harmless. I then started taking Colloidal Silver immediately, which was just a precaution in the event that I somehow had an infection. I could only find Colloidal Silver in a healthfood store, but Walgreen's offered to order it for me. I just didn't want to wait for it. I fasted for a day, drinking water when I felt hungry.

I don't know if any of this truly worked for me or not, it may be a placebo effect or just natural course, but I'm 6 weeks in and I've regained the ability to move my nostril, my speech is no longer slurred, I can blink my eye with no problem. I still can't lift my eyebrow, and when I smile my right corner still droops. Did the vitamins and diet work? I don't know. Was it the chiropractor? I don't know either. I'm still going to continue taking them cause even if they didn't work, they made me feel as though I was doing something to better myself. I also used a back massager and massaged my face every 2 hours to stimulate the nerves. I practice A E I O U and exagerate the formation of the letters with my mouth. I hold my eyebrow in place as I mentally think about lifting them, and then lift my left one. I do the same with the corner of my mouth. I've still got some recovering to do. I know B-12 and B-6 are good for your nerve endings and muscles. For a few bucks it's worth a try right?

You can google and read about habbatus sawda, kalonji oil, black seed.

I'm am not sure if its available in the Philippines as it originated from the middle east but I am sure you can buy it online.

Try Accupressure & craniosacral too as in my son case he could feel his cheek with his tongue after the 1st treatment, but this could be due to his age. Maybe Mr. Ted can help us out here

Hi Jeni, I'm a member of a TN support group and although I myself haven't suffered from Bell's Palsy I know that some people on my group have. You may want to check the TN website on www.livingwithtn.org; enter "Bell's Palsy" into the search window. Take care, Oldriska

P.S. I have atypical TN and I also find acupuncture helpful.

There is a heap of information about currently having symptoms Bell's Palsy and various options for treatment, but it is rare to find any articles about the lingering effects of Bell's Palsy in the years after the initial damage has been done.

I developed Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) many years after the damage was done by the Bell's Palsy. The pain that comes with TN is awful. I only found out about the connection between Bell's Palsy and TN after extensive internet search.

I am now taking medication to reduce the risks of flare-ups, and acupuncture helps as well.

I hope this might be some help to you - I own a copy of this book, and have often found its information helpful. He is saying that if the right side is the afflicted side, you might want to try cutting way down on your sodium intake, and eat more high-potassium foods, switch from ordinary salt (sodium chloride) to potassium salt (here in the US sold as "No Salt"). If the left side is the afflicted side, perhaps increase sodium intake.

"When a stroke affects the right side, it is usually due to blood clotting related to a lack of Potassium. Bell's Palsy on the right side is usually a Potassium deficiency affecting the muscles of the face and body on the right side (left side of the body is influenced by the Sodium level).

Yes, I have known many people get this (transient stroke) It's quite common. It will go eventually. I know its scary but the chance of it "recovering" are very high <3 Love Andrea c
