Dry Mouth: I just want to say I came across this website and it is a blessing... I have tried both potassium and vitamin e. About 5 hours later I started feeling the difference. I would have sleepless nights and anxiety and beginning with depression. My tongue is feeling much better I am salivating again.. You don't know how this is changing my life.. I am getting my life back..

Vitamin E

I will add that you should rinse your mouth well with warm water after oil pulling. It can pull out bacteria that is seated between your teeth and gums. You don't want to swallow any of this or leave any behind.

I do like the idea of adding the probiotic!

Vitamin E
Posted by Emma (San Diego, CA) on 05/19/2014

Oil pulling definitely helps, I use any oil available including olive. After swishing around for 10-15 minutes, spit it out then open one capsule of raw probiotics ( I use vaginal care) pop it in your mouth, let it melt. oil pulling helps to get rid of toxins, probiotics repopulate good bacteria.

Potassium for dry mouth. Thanks so much! I was taking an electrolyte pill already and it wasn't helping.. So I added an additional potassium pill after reading your post. So far it's helped a lot... My mouth was so dry at night I had to pry it from the roof of my mouth and I was starting to panic. Now it's much better although at night, my lips stick together a little.. So I'm gonna up my potassium again. My tongue was burning so I had started Vitamin B complex prior to the electrolyte pill.

My mother developed dry mouth (not related to Sjogrens) which may have been induced from st. Johns wort. We have tried multiple natural remedies which did not work. Baking soda helped a little but did not solve the problem. I learned about Lactoferrin from Colostrum and Whey protein and how it is a glycoprotein secreted by saliva (and tears). It has immune function (antimicrobial) in mucus membranes like the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. I suggested she open the capsule and put the powder in her mouth to dissolve and work through with her tongue. She grudgingly did so and used a little silver hydrosol to wet it. It helped the first time she used it and has done it another 3 or 4 times since (once per day). She very happily reported it has helped tremendously.

I did some internet searches and had not come across anyone doing this. Earth Clinic is a great website for sharing and I hope this helps someone else. The dry mouth was incredibly irritating for her.

Soon as I saw Potassium for dry mouth it immediately light the bulb on me & ran to CVS. Before I start the car coming back I took two pills. In half an hour I felt the change immediately. For the last 3 months I am bedridden with acid reflux & heartburn usually from pm to sundown & fatigued. I also googled saliva & read a bunch of articles about it. I think saliva is very well underestimated. I came to a conclusion that having no sufficient amount of saliva results to malnutrition. As most PCP would say that to counteract dry mouth is drink water, is comparing that the only function of saliva is for lubrication alone. Water is way far off as a substitute for saliva. As saliva is understudied & underestimated I think there is more to saliva than the medical community knows. If electrolytes, enzymes, the naturally occuring antibodies are present in saliva there must be a huge reason behind it that Mother Nature decided so. Therefore I took two pills of K & another one before I ate supper. In 3 months it's only today that I didn't have heartburn & no fatigue. I wouldn't be surprise if my gluten intolerance has something to do with saliva/ dry mouth. I just bought a K CVS brand. I'll keep you posted. Thank you so much to all of you for taking a time documenting what works & shared. I am deeply grateful.

Hydrogen Peroxide

WORKED TEMPORARILY

Hello all, Recently I started taking Flexeryl for back tension. One bad thing about this drug: for the last three days, I had the most HORRIBLE dry mouth you could ever get! I felt like I was choking and gagging all the time, and had that compulsive desire to swallow every couple seconds that really started to get on my nerves. In addition, this morning I woke up with a painful and sore tongue and an irritation of the lower lip. Later today the lip got swollen; also I lifted up my tongue and discovered that sublingular glands are tender and swollen, too.

I started to get anxious but then saw a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, the type you can use for "oral debridement" or 3%. I took a sip and started swishing it around in my mouth. The liquid almost instantly turned into foam (which means that bacteria are being killed), and I had to spit it out and get a new portion. This time the foam appeared only after 10-15 seconds. I repeated the procedure two more times, and looked at myself in the mirror. My mouth already looked much better and healthier, and my salivary glands were working! The effect did not last too long, however this is still a good "quick fix" if you want to eat, for example.

Vitamin E works wonders for a dry mouth! Try swishing a tablespoon of vitamin E around in your mouth for 5 minutes the way Ted suggests for oil pulling - so basically you are oil pulling with liquid Vitamin E! I felt better after the very first time. I don't know that I would do this all the time because it's a pretty large amount of vitamin E you're getting! I know I can't mention brands but the kind I get is a in liquid form called E-gems.

Celtic Sea Salt, Then Water

Sounds like Sjogren's Syndrome. Dry eyes and dry mouth are symptoms of this.

Mmsg, I also use Celtic salt (here sel de Guérande) but I was dissolving 1/4 of a teaspoon in a liter of water. It did nothing for me. In a book about water I read the author claimed he treated back pain, allergies and whatever more with it but it did absolutely nothing for me. And my eyes and throat kept getting drier and drier during the night. My skin is quite dry too, especially in winter something I never had before (the age doesn't help either, together with the menopause! ). I am now starting to think that maybe drinking a lot of water is not what my body needs. It is true that the dark circles around my eyes have disappeared but other than that nothing good came out of it. Maybe I am flushing my body too fast by drinking too much water, I don't know! I will try your trick of putting a bit of salt on my tongue before drinking water and see how it goes! And I am definitely going to drink less for a while and see what happens. I will drink at good intervals but not so much! And the big cup of tea before going to bed is going to change to a small one.

Thanks for the feedback! I recently found out that my mom has been taking Carvedilol for her blood preassure and after I did a bit of research, it seems that this has been the culprit for a lot of her problems including getting very thirsty and she never told me about it (some parents are very hard to treat). Since she's been weaned off of her toxic meds for a while now and using natural meds, it seems that the side effects, when taken again, get more pronounced.

About dry mouth:

I often felt that plain water didn't quench my thirst, and my mouth felt dry even right after drinking. The remedy I use now is a small lick of Celtic Sea Salt (the French grey stuff) before drinking a glass of water. No more dry mouth and, surprisingly, sleeping longer hours before having to get up for a bathroom break. I've also started using that salt in salads etc.

Hi all, my mom is recently having problems with dry mouth at night, she'd wake up feeling very thirsty. She has been a diabetic for almost 20yrs now and also has rheumatoid arthritis. But I don't think that is the problem since this has never happened to her before. I'm currently letting her take FGHP everyday which is a tremendous help to her. The nodules that are have manifested due to her arthritis are actually going away. On top of that, I'm also letting her take fulvic acid. And recently, giving her the ACV/BSM/BS combo. She has been off her traditional meds (Antibiotics and BP meds for the most part) for quite sometime now and is only taking insulin shots. But she is worried about the dry mouth which occurred a week ago, although it comes and goes. She does drink a lot of water so I don't know what is causing this. I'm telling her that maybe its just a phase and that maybe the body is trying to rebalance itself or something, since she has always complained in the past of water retention, but she feels that its waaaay overboard. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi, I was having a lot of trouble with dry mouth, dry nose, dry tongue, burning mouth. I had tried everything: hormones, B vitamins, iron, etc. It caused me to have a lot of anxiety and sleepless nights. The only thing that has helped me is potassium. I started taking a potassium supplement of around 600 - 1000 mg. a day. Also, high potassium foods: fruit juices, cantalope, V-8 juice, tomato juice. Once my potassium levels came up, the dry mouth started going away, also acid reflux, and stomach, digestion problems. Hope this helps someone.

Recently I came across this article that could help people with this mysterious symptom. The deficiency of vitamins & minerals is causing widespread havoc with our overall health these days and the answer is obviously taking multi-vitamins besides just looking into oils, herbs and vinegars.

Minerals are the basic elements our bodies are made of and sometimes that's just what our bodies need to miraculously get back on track. Magnesium & B Complex intake can help with dry mouth as can Iron intake as Anemia too can be the prime cause for dry mouth! Omega 3s have been suggested too.

Hi Bill,

I have gotten my dry mouth under control for most part but am now presented with another problem. I visited my endocronologist last week. He did an ultrasound on my thyroid. The 1 in. X.5 in. nodule on my left thyroid lobe is now the size of a small egg and I have one larger than a quarter on my right lobe. He has scheduled a visit with a surgeon and planning to have the thyroid removed. Also I don't think my thyroid produces anywhere except the hot nodule on the left. He mentioned that I had what he called holes in the ultrasound where the thyroid has died out. I am very uncertain about the total removal of my thyroid. Have been reading some of the symptoms of thyroidectomy and doesn't sound good. I have dealt with depression and anxiety since I went thru menopause and that is the same time my thyroid started to act up. I lost 43 lbs before anyone would give me medication. I am at 5' 6" and weigh 130 lbs. And get very sluggish if I gain as much as 5 lbs. Those who are heavy for their height are always telling me I need to gain weight. Are there any alternatives I can take to keep from having the surgery? Is there something that I can do to reduce the nodules and get my thyroid operating properly? I was surprised it had grown so even though I was taking medication. It has been 4 years since I had an ultrasound. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi Eileen... In the old days doctors used to treat both hypo- and hyperthyroidism quite successfully with Lugol's Iodine. Read this link:

http://www.optimox.com/pics/Iodine/IOD-08/IOD_08.htm

This article -- from the most current research from Dr Abraham's Iodine Project -- covers the older use of iodine, safety, history and something called "iodophobia" or the origins of the current fear of too much iodine intake. This fear of iodine has been spread by the modern modern medical fraternity in order that other more dangerous synthetic drugs -- ie Synthroid, Thyrogen etc. -- might be used instead of the cheaper iodine(which can't be patented), thus allowing more profit for the drugs industries.

You can treat both hyperthyroid and hypothyroid with lugol's iodine(using much larger doses than are recommended with the RDA).

If your TSH levels are normal with the thyroid output high, then your current "hot area" of the thyroid may be caused by excess flouride uptake rather than iodine uptake. This causes thyroid resistance in the iodine receptors which may cause this thyroid area to overproduce and upset the thyroid hormone balance in the regulating feedback loop. You can read all the research articles from the Iodine Project -- which is the most current research on iodine use and dosage -- from this link:

http://www.optimox.com/pics/Iodine/opt_Research_I.shtml

Iodine will remove dangerous flourine and bromine form your body -- including your thyroid, so taking lugol's iodine is beneficial and healing in this respect. Your readings of the Iodine Project iodine dosages for hypertyroidism will give you some idea of the necessary dosage of iodine to take for hyperthyroidism -- and will generally be in dosages over 100 times more than the current RDA for iodine.

Borax also removes excess flouride from your body. See this link for Borax use:

https://www.earthclinic.com/remedies/borax.html

I also believe that you should do all you can to avoid letting the medical fraternity kill off your thyroid with dangerous radioactive substances. If this happens, then you will be taking synthetic drugs as recommended by the medical fraternity for life. You will also probably have incurable problems from hypothyroidism and become totally reliant on these thyroid drugs. Read the rest of research from The Iodine Project here:

Your situation sounds complicated. I had Burning Mouth for about four months a few years ago, and what helped me was:
1. Lots of water (even though it tasted metallic and bitter)
2. Olive Leaf Extract
3. Allergy medication (I think it was steroidal) for sinus issues I was having - never had allergies before or since, but I took this for two months and I think it helped. As a short-term fix it made me feel a lot better. Mine went away coinciding with our rainy season which makes me think it was some kind of airborne allergy. I also had some digestive problems at the time, but nothing like you mention.

Hi Bill,

Sorry I have not responded sooner. Thanks for your reply. Just read it today. Lots has happened with family and myself since I contacted you in April I was hospitalized twice in last month for Diverticulitis (upper left colon) of which I am not sure that is my real problem. I had surgery Oct 2008 to remove 8 inches of my lower colon. Only had about 6 months of freedom from digestive pain. I now have consistent lower abdomenal pain that started in May after my Dry burning mouth started. Everything has been negative for female and bladder conditions. Also was tested for Sjogren's in April. Came back negative. Seems though that my symptoms are very similar to Sjogren's with the lethargy and digestive symptoms. Had 24/7 severe nausea, ab pain with ocassional vomiting for 2 months prior to hospitalization. My dry, burning mouth was almost gone until I was loaded with antibiotics while in hospital. The dry mouth has returned with a vengance. I am also being treated for severe anxiety which is enhanced from external circumstances. I drink approx. 64 oz of water daily. At time of hospitalization I weighed 112 lbs. Am now up to 118 lbs. I had considered the tapazole and was wondering if I should have redioactive iodine to irradicate the hot nodule that is causing the hyperthyroid. Think some of the anxiety comes from that even though blood tests are normal. Then I would have to deal with hypothyroid and keeping that in check. I have always been very active and full of energy. Walked 3 miles and climbed 500 steps daily. Have done woodworking, carpentry, plumbing, drywall, and you name it, I have done most every thing. Fortunately I have a new gastro/surgeon specialist who does not believe in massive antibiotics and unnecessary surgery. I am now at 180 degrees of what I was spring 2009. I have tried grapefruit seed extract liqud but not sure the brand I have is the purest first letter S last letter Y. Surely there is an answer with something natural that God provided for us on this earth. I know God does not intend life to be this way.

Got any more suggestions? Will be most grateful.

Hi Eileen...The fact that you have taken Tapazole medication for 8 years might explain alot.

Here is a description of many of the side-effects from Tapazole:

"Major adverse reactions (which occur with much less frequency than the minor adverse reactions) include inhibition of myelopoieses (agranulocytosis, granulocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia), aplastic anemia, drug fever, a lupuslike syndrome, insulin autoimmune syndrome (which can result in hypoglycemic coma), hepatitis (jaundice may persist for several weeks after discontinuation of the drug), periarteritis, and hypoprothrombinemia. Nephritis occurs very rarely.

Minor adverse reactions include skin rash, urticaria, nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, arthralgia, paresthesia, loss of taste, abnormal loss of hair, myalgia, headache, pruritus, drowsiness, neuritis, edema, vertigo, skin pigmentation, jaundice, sialadenopathy, and lymphadenopathy."
-- Taken from RxList

Tapazole seems to be a drug with wide and quite serious side-effects to the liver, kidney and intestines.

From what you describe as your symptoms, you might have what's called Sjogren's Syndrome.

EC Dry Mouth Remedies

EC Sjogren's Syndrome Remedies

A white tongue can also indicate dehydration -- more water needed. You describe that you have a creamy white coated tongue which could also indicate Oral Thrush or Intestinal Candida or both. If the creamy white coating is just on the front of your tongue then this might mean just oral thrush but if this creamy coating extends to beyond the back of your tongue or is patchy, then there's a good chance you might also have candida in the intestines.

If you have had any recurring yeast infections, eczma, athlete's foot, psoriasis, bloating, constipation, low energy etc. -- these can all be indicators of candida(as was the case for my own candida problem).

Sjorgren's and Candida

It might be worth checking to see whether both your saliva and urine are acidic -- using pH strips bought at the chemist. This will also tend to confirm body acidity and candida.

Question for Bill.

I started about 2 months ago waking with dry mouth to the point that it was difficult to close or open. About 6 weeks ago I started having ulcers on my tongue then Burn Mouth. Extremey painful all inside mouth, throat, lips, sometimes nose and ears. I went to the dentist he gave me a magic mouth concoction, didn't help. Just made my mouth numb for a short time. Then he said I have Burning mouth syndrome. Gave me a trycilic antidepressant which has a side effect of dry mouth. I finally had a good day yesterday but was overwhelmed with dry mouth last evening and today with dry and burning. My tongue is mostly creamy colored. Has been that way for days. have been drinking Ted's baking soda off and on and today. I drink lots of water. I had a uti and was treated with that 2 weeks ago. I also have hyperthyroid and have taken tapazole 10mg for 8 years. Do you have any suggestions or could this be a question for Ted. I am almost 62 years old, female, 5'6", weigh 128 lbs and loosing more, and most miserable with this 24 hr condition.

Dry Mouth & Dry Eyes Help

My problems with dry mouth started when I began taking an anti depressant. It only affected me when I would lie down to sleep. The dryness was so bad that it was seriously interfering with my sleep. I do not like the idea of taking things with sugar, sugar substitutes or any kinds of chemicals and putting them into my mouth to stop the dryness, tho when I did give in and try some OTC products, they didn't help much.

What has helped dramatically with dry mouth has been fennel seed, organic. Right before bed I take about 1/2 tsp. and chew it a little to soften it, then use my tongue to tuck the seeds under my upper & lower lip, between there & the teeth. The flavonoids in the fennel causes me to salivate, but not to a bothersome extent. Sometimes the little seeds fall down onto my tongue at night, but that doesn't hurt anything & I never have come close to choking. Works every time! For dry eyes, I noticed one commercial product had castor oil in it, & some kind of chemical. Every night before I got to bed I wet my finger with castor oil, not so that it is dripping wet. Then I rub the inner side of the lower lids with the oil, close my eyes & roll my eyes around. It helps a ton!

HI Janice...I had Candida internally as well as external fungal and bacterial stuff like athlete's foot, psoriasis, constipation etc. When I started on the Lime, Lemon or ACV baking soda protocol, it took a while but I stuck with it.

What actually happened was that my body was gently transformed. My psoriasis disappeared rather quickly as I recall. My stools became softer, smaller and completely regular on a daily basis (before, it was 3 or 4 days between my stools).

I am also convinced that the baking soda remedies that I took every day were responsible for gently clearing my liver and gall bladder of all gallstones. I could feel them coming out -- felt like hard peas. This lasted 6 months. I also lost a great deal of weight(because of excreting all the stones from the liver and gall bladder) and I am no longer overweight now and have no "pot belly" at all.

The external fungus was quite another problem. The tinea cruris(jock itch) was tenacious!! Bye the way, I found out that tinea cruris(jock itch) is exactly the same as tinea pedis(athletes foot) -- only the locations are different. I tried all the drugs, none worked. Then I tried a mixture of athletes foot powder during the day, and Milk of Magnesia(MoM) at night after my shower. When I started to apply the MoM, the jock itch went away in about 2 days -- not a sign of it!!

In other advice here from Ted, he says that MoM easily kills any microbes or fungus on the skin -- because no microbe or fungus can survive an alkalinity and pH of between 9 and 10. MoM also kills MRSA according to Ted's research. Powerful but fairly gentle stuff.

I also suffered no ill affects at all from these various protocols.

I use "Arm and Hammer" baking soda and "_____s Apple Cider Vinegar" in the Baking Soda protocols below.

Lime(or Lemon) Baking Soda remedy

Squeeze a whole lime or lemon into a glass
Add half a teaspoon of Baking Soda slowly. It will fizz!!
Add water up to half a glassful.
Drink it in one.

Apple Cider Vinegar(ACV) Baking Soda remedy

Two tablespoons of ACV in a glass
Add Half a teaspoon of Baking Soda. It will fizz!!
Add water to half a glass
Drink it in one.

The Lime/lemon BS will just alkalize your intestines. The ACV BS remedy will both alkalize your gut as well as your blood and will give you more energy too. You canc also just put half a teaspoon of BS into half a glass of water and drink it -- this will alkalize just the blood. I generally mix all these protocols now, depending on how I feel.

These baking soda remedies must always be taken at least an hour before or 2 hours after meals, 2 or 3 times a day. Do NOT take these BS remedies during meals, because they are alkaline and will neutralize your stomach acids and your food will not be digested properly causing problems.

My own regimen now is to take these BS remedies first thing in the morning, and again at about 9 pm at night -- I only take it twice a day now. Also, Ted advises that you should take these BS remedies for five days, then rest for two days, and then begin again the following week.

The above protocols are further explained here by Ted and others:

https://www.earthclinic.com/remedies/alkalizing_formulas.html

Milk of Magnesia protocol.

Shake the bottle well.
Apply the MoM liberally by hand or with cotton wool to the infected skin area
Leave it on for 20 mins. It will become dry and dusty.
Wash off well.

Apply a hydrating cream such as cocoa butter to the infected area and that's it.

I used to apply the MoM last thing at night and leave it on all night, then shower it off in the morning. This might be a little extreme for some people with sensitive skin because MoM does have quite a drying affect on the skin. If you apply the MoM a few times a day with a natural hydrating cream in the manner advised this will not be as extreme as my own approach!!

Here is some more reading for you regarding MoM cures which might be of some help:

https://www.earthclinic.com/remedies/milk-of-magnesia.html

Good luck!!

Thanks for your response Bill. I don't think the dryness is from Sjogren's. The dryness in my mouth is only at night. I'm fine during the day. I think maybe I'm sleeping with my mouth open for some reason. I think the dry skin might be due to the change in weather. It's turning cold here now and everyone has to run their furnaces which really dries the air and skin. My cousin complained to me the other day that her skin was so dry also. However, I think you might be on to something with the candida. I just had a spot under my breast that the Dr. diagnosed as a fungus. So, would you be able to tell me in more detail what YOU did to rid yourself of it? Thanks a bunch!

Hi Janice...Regarding your problem, it sounds as if you could have Sjogren's Syndrome. Have a look at Ted's remedies for Sjogren's syndrome at:

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/sjogrens_syndrome.html

It may be that you actually have Candidiasis in the intestines. I had Candida a few years ago, and mainly used Ted's ACV/Lime/Lemon baking soda protocols to get rid of it successfully. I also used Milk of Magnesia(also advised by Ted) as an external application to get rid of tinea cruris(jock itch), athletes foot, psoriasis and other external invasive fungi and yeasts from the outside of my body. All gone now and it was quite easy and cheap, but took a little while.

Thanks Kay, I appreciate your input. I know I'm not drinking enough water and yes, I am menopausal. I looked up sjogrens and I don't think I fit that (I hope). My Dad does have Rheumatoid Arthritis but I think maybe the biggest thing going on with me right now is a GREAT deal of stress. I didn't even realize how bad it was until this morning when I felt like I hit the wall and burst into tears. I've been holding a lot of stuff inside. Anyway, thanks again for your input.

It could be that you are not drinking enough water, or maybe your hormones are changing (change of life?). Have you been checked for diabetes? If these things seem o.k., I would have your doctor check you for sjogren's syndrome. It is an autoimmune disease and the prominent symptons are dryness of all of the mucus membranes. The eyes, skin, mouth, vagina, hair, basically anything with moisture are all involved. If there are any autoimmune diseases in your family, you could be at risk. I wish you luck.
