What Is Gynecomastia?

An imbalance in hormones in the body can lead to significant health issues in both men and women. Gynecomastia is a condition that affects men as a result of irregular levels of estrogen and testosterone. Defined as the swelling of the breast tissue in boys or men, gynecomastia may affect one both breasts and may appear unevenly.

While gynecomastia is typically not a major health concern, affected individuals may experience slight pain from the swelling and may be self-conscious or embarrassed about their bodies. The common signs and symptoms of gynecomastia include swollen breast gland tissue and general breast tenderness. More serious symptoms including severe swelling, pain, tenderness and nipple discharge are uncommon and require medical attention.

The underlying cause of gynecomastia is a decrease in the amount of testosterone when compared to the amount of estrogen. This imbalance may be caused by a number of factors. In infants, an estrogen imbalance is typically due to the effects of the mother’s estrogen levels on the baby while in pubescent boys the irregular hormone levels typically originate from bodily changes. Likewise, gynecomastia in men typically arises between the ages of 50 and 80 and is a result of bodily changes the male is facing. Medications, drugs, alcohol, other health conditions and herbal products have also been tied to the development of gynecomastia in males.

Natural Remedies for Gynecomastia

One of the most common options for treating this condition is often gynecomastia surgery. However, gynecomastia surgery is not the only option. Turmeric taken in either powder or capsule form is one of the most effective options for treating gynecomastia. Phytoestrogens including soy, flaxseed and red clover work to lower the estrogen levels present in the body and can relieve the effects of gynecomastia. Likewise, eating a diet lower in animal fats and higher in plant fats as well as building the chest muscles through exercise can help reduce the size and appearance of breast tissue in men and works more effectively for treating the condition than gynecomastia surgery.

Puffy Nipple Remedies

Posted by Richard (Birmingham) on 08/16/2014

Hi, I'm a guy and I suffer from a type of gynecomastia that is called puffy nipples, which involves the nipple being puffy and visable when wearing a shirt, it ruins the look of a strong chest. There is no hard fat or tissue behind the nipple, its just puffy kind of like a dome shape. I know a bunch of other guys who also suffer from this issue. Does anyone have any cures for this problem? At the moment I'm taking inositol because it raises progesterone levels and ive read progesterne to be a cure for this. Any FEEDBACK would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Turmeric for Gynecomastia: I'm not sure of the effects it has on women, but I don't let my girlfriend get near this stuff. LOL... But I took it in the past and my issues eliminated rather quickly. I began with the powdered turmeric, but couldn't stand the taste. So, I took the capsules and abracabra.... No more man-boobs.... best, cheapest, simplest remedy around.

Turmeric For Gynecomastia

Turmeric root is minimizing my gynecomastia. I tried weights as i am an avid athlete yet it only creates a negative effect as my chest grows and the gynecomastia becomes more visible. I have been using turmeric root for about six months now and even after the second day, i experienced amazing results. All i do is fill a glass with water, pour two tablespoons of turmeric into it and heat it up for two minutes. Take it out the microwave, stir and drink.. Not as appetizing but done three times daily, ESPECIALLY before bed and you won't believe your results in the morning.

A friend of mine who has seen good results turned me on to turmeric, and I started taking 100mg turmeric just 2 weeks ago and the results have been nothing short of miraculous! My bitch tits, which have been a huge source of embarassment to me for years, have literally disappeared and my chest has flattened out. In fact, the area immediately surrounding my nipples has even become slightly indented due to the fat loss. As I am opposed to invasive surgery, I HIGHLY recommend you try turmeric first, you might be amazed at the results.

To Djaaronk from San Francisco, Ca: I no longer have gynecomastia. First I was using the turmeric powder, but I tried turmeric in capsules from Walmart that has everything. And to my surprise, they work just as effectively as the turmeric powder in water, but without the taste. I personally took as many as eight capsules three to five times daily!! Sounds like a lot but it absolutely worked for me with no side effects. They work a whole lot better if you take them right before bed. You will see results even after ten minutes of taking them. Hope this helps, buddy. Good luck.

Reply to Dolphins7 from Youngstown, Ohio - I know that it is hard to believe, but turmeric is a very simple remedy for your gyne concerns. I use the capsules because I am not excited about the taste. They work incredibly. And you're absolutely right. This problem has plagued so many men who think expensive and painful surgery is the only way to get rid of it. What a shame that such miracles and being kept a secret.

I have just started taking 5 tablespoons of tumeric with water (not heating it) just before bed every night. For the past week I have not noticed any results (and I have only developed gyno recently due to a drug side effect).

I hope this works, but I must admit - it sounds like it's too good to be true. You're not trying to sell anything in your recommendation of tumeric so I assume you mean well but the fact that tumeric isn't associated scientifically with a cure for gyno is reason to keep expectations low.

I will come back and report if I have any changes.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, tell me if your gyno was actual breast tissue (i.e. You could feel hardness in your chest like a pebble) or if it was just fat. Because I have actual tissue and nearly no body fat.

It's always good to remember that in men who even drink moderately, the alcohol turns the testosterone into estrogen.. and hence over time one gets man boobs.

Is there any scientific reference?

I have been a regular midium-heavy drinker for 40 years and "the alcohol turns the testosterone into estrogen" doesn't seem to apply to me.

Nevertheless, I admit alcohol MIGHT not be good to general health.

Response to Manboobs from Sydney Australia.

It's very unfortunate that you say that turmeric hasn't worked for you to help minimize your "manboobs". It's hard when you hear about a miracle cure that so men have experienced positive feedback from their body, and it doesn't seem to work for someone else. The reality is, there are some things that work for some that don't work for others. But if possible, try the turmeric pills... Works better I think

I am just wondering if iodine (lugols) would help you. It balances the hormones in the body. If you are deficient maybe that is why there is a problem in the first place, it is not protecting you. A deficiency is also what causes prostrate cancer (and thyroid issues) so you would be better off taking it anyway.

The problem I had was my nipples were getting puffy even tho I'm not fat, when I wore t shirts you could see the puffy nipple through my shirts, it was a really embarresing so I'd always wear a vest even when it was hot, I did some research and found a few guys on some bodybuilding forums with the same issues, so I came on here and saw that people were trying turmeric, I bought standardized turmeric capsules meaning they were equivalent to like 10000mg of the actual turmeric powder, went through like 2 containers of about 120 capsules each and after about 2 months my nipples arent puffy anymore I can wear tshirts and it looks normal. So in conclusion I testify that this really does work.. I'm going to continue taking turmeric capsules but just the normal non standardized ones because the other 1's are more expensive because they are standardized... make sure you take a tleast 4 grams of turmeric in capsules per day with fat because it helps the bioavailabilty in your body.

Hello, I have read wonderful reviews on the health benefits of turmeric. I include it as a daily supplement but only take 1 or 2 per day. This doesn't seem to reduce chest size. How many should I be taking? I'm 6 ft and 200 lbs. The man boobs have been part of my life since I was about 8 or 9 years old. I'm ready for them to be gone.

I've been reading a lot about the benefits of Vitamin E for gyno and estrogen dominance issues in men and women, and I've come across alot of strong studies and reviews stating it can get rid of gyno and puffyness of the nipples. I'm going to start taking it ordered some, make sure you buy a mixed Vitamin E that contains at least 4 different types of vitamin e and make sure it's not the synthetic type which is written as for e.g "dl-alhpa", make sure it says "d-" Have a look at this When buying a vitamin E supplement, check the label to see if it contains natural or synthetic vitamin E. Natural Vitamin E = d-alpha-tocopherol. Synthetic Vitamin E = dl-alpha-tocophery. Take at least 400iu upwards of a natural vitamin E. Hope this helps.

Id like to add that Natural vitamin E should be taken with a natural source of Selenium. Selenium and vitamin e both work together and enhance each other.

Selenium (Se) is a metal that is chemically similar to sulfur. It was first discovered in 1817 and because of its silvery color was named for Selene, the ancient goddess of the moon. Selenium is an essential component of two important antioxidant enzymes and is also the helpmate of vitamin E. Antioxidants Against Cancer by Ralph Moss PhD, page 76

Selenium also appears to help stimulate antibody formation in response to vaccines. This immunostimulating effect is also enhanced by vitamin E; the presence of these two nutrients can increase antibody formation by 20-30 times, as shown by research.
Staying Healthy With Nutrition by Elson M Haas MD, page 213

Vitamin E and selenium protected animals against the potent carcinogenic effects of DMBA from tobacco. Beating Cancer With Nutrition by Patrick Quillin, page 164

Selenium acts as an antioxidant and strengthens the body's immune defense system. Thus, many of the effects which are produced by vitamin E deficiency can be reversed or prevented by selenium. Some laboratory experiments have suggested that the combination of vitamin E and selenium is more effective in preventing cancer than either of them alone. Rahul, you should take up to 20 grams of turmeric with a fat such as oil, it absorbs better; or if you can try and buy standardized turmeric capsules and take around 3-5g of the standardized turmeric.

hope this helps

Out of desperation I have tried turmeric capsules from WalMart. It didn't work at all. In fact, I knew it wouldn't work, I just did it just in case there was even a slight chance of it working.

No one fall for this, especially not anonymous testimonies online. Has anyone ever noticed that that are anecdotal reports of turmeric's effectiveness for treating gynecomastia, but yet, no one has ever provided documented proof? No one has before or after photos. Imagine going to a surgeon who has no proof, just anonymous testimonies regarding his effectiveness in treating gyno... it'd be hard to trust a doctor like that, wouldn't it?

Furthermore, let's apply some common sense. Take a look at bodybuilder Ronnie Coleman. The guy has slight gyno, but yet, he has around 5% bodyfat. So we know that being overweight is not his problem. So, does anyone seriously think that Coleman wouldn't know of a natural remedy if one existed (that said I don't know why he doesn't just get surgery). Or take a look at "the Rock" Dwayne Johnson. He had to get gyno surgery... does anyone seriously think the Rock wouldn't have known about a natural remedy?

I REALLY wish turmeric was real. But I'm afraid it simply isn't. My theory on those of you who think it has eliminated your gyno is that it hasn't. What has happened is that at best, it shrunk the gland and you carry enough bodyfat to no longer notice it. But if you were ever to drop your bodyfat % to less than 10%, then you'd see them sticking out again. Another possibility is that you were lucky and your gyno went away on its own, unrelated to the turmeric, which might have happened if you are still young and were finishing puberty. And of course, at worst, you're simply lying and you know it.

I'm 17 and have gyno. I take 3 turmeric capsules in the morning and 4 at night, and I squeeze a warm cup of water with the powder in whenever I can. Should I be taking more or less? I'm not too sure if there has been an improvement, but it certainly hasn't got worse. Will the turmeric help with the puffiness??

To James:

I'm no doctor, James, so all I can say is what I did in the past to eliminate my gynecomastia. After doing my own research, (which I recommend you do as well) I decided that I would consume 7 turmeric capsules 3 times per day. Just a cup of water and some turmeric. What's crazy is that I was able to see results on a daily basis. I had gynecomastia while in high school, so I was never a fan of taking off my shirt, and things didn't get any better during college. But thankfully, my research paid off and I'm gynecomastia-free. My turmeric discovery led me to ask 'if turmeric can do this so quickly for my body, what can other herbs do?' The adventure continues. Good luck James.

To Matt from Tacoma, WA:

In hindsight, I wish I did take before/after pics. Back then, my plight wasn't something I was interested in sharing with the world.

If one buys a $10 bottle of turmeric capsules and it doesn't work, then one will have only wasted $10. But what if it DOES work, and a person gets rid of his gyno for good, isn't it worth it? It's unfortunate that it hasn't work for you, Matt and I empathize with your frustration; I wonder how long you used turmeric before you decided it simply wasn't working; I do agree with you, individuals should research and draw their own conclusions. Now, the idea of natural cures like turmeric for celebrities...?! When they can afford the exorbitant prices doctors charge for "quick fixes"?! Not many surgeons are willing to risk losing an easy, hefty paycheck by telling their patient about a $10 cure.
