Heberden's nodes are bony growths that form at the distal interphalangeal joints of the fingers, often linked to osteoarthritis. These nodes can cause discomfort, stiffness, and inflammation. While they are not considered a severe health risk, they can impact daily activities.

Fortunately, several natural remedies and supplements can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and slow the progression of these nodes.

Supplements for Heberden's Nodes

1. Glucosamine and Chondroitin

These compounds help support joint cartilage and may reduce pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. Many people take 1500 mg of glucosamine and 1200 mg of chondroitin daily for joint support.

2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Found in fish oil and flaxseed oil, omega-3s have potent anti-inflammatory properties. These essential fatty acids can help reduce joint stiffness and pain over time.

3. Turmeric and Curcumin

Turmeric contains curcumin, a natural anti-inflammatory compound that can help relieve pain in the joints. You can take turmeric as a capsule (500 mg daily) or add it to your meals.

4. Green Tea

Rich in polyphenols, green tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Drinking 1-2 cups daily may help reduce joint swelling and stiffness.

Natural Remedies for Heberden's Nodes

1. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar has anti-inflammatory properties and can help with joint pain. There are two ways to use ACV:

  • Topically: Mix equal parts ACV and water, soak a cloth, and apply to the affected area for 15-20 minutes.
  • Internally: Mix 1 tablespoon of ACV in a glass of water and drink once daily.

2. Epsom Salt Soak

Epsom salt, rich in magnesium sulfate, helps reduce joint inflammation.

  • Fill a small bowl with warm water.
  • Add 1/2 cup of Epsom salt.
  • Soak your fingers for 15-20 minutes.
  • Repeat 2-3 times per week.

3. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel is known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects. Apply a small amount directly onto the affected fingers twice daily to reduce pain and swelling.

4. Ginger

Ginger has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and can be used in two ways:

  • Internally: Add fresh ginger to your tea or meals.
  • Topically: Make a ginger paste (mix ginger powder with water) and apply it to the affected area.

5. Hand Exercises

Regular hand exercises can help maintain joint flexibility and reduce stiffness:

  • Finger Stretches: Spread your fingers wide and hold for 10 seconds.
  • Fist Clenching: Make a fist and hold for 5 seconds, then release.
  • Grip Strengthening: Squeeze a stress ball for 10-15 seconds.

Lifestyle Changes to Support Joint Health

1. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Extra weight puts pressure on joints, accelerating wear and tear. Losing even a few pounds can help reduce joint stress.

2. Eat an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Avoid processed foods and eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and lean proteins. Foods like salmon, walnuts, and leafy greens can help reduce inflammation.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water to lubricate joints and support overall health.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If Heberden's nodes cause severe pain, stiffness, or loss of mobility, consult a healthcare professional. In some cases, physical therapy or medical interventions may be necessary.

Vitamin B6 is excellent for the nodes on fingers. 50 to 100 mg per day for me reduced them quickly. I learned about it from a book called The Doctor's Guide to Vitamin B6. I think it is from the '70's and it is packed with information. Also take a complete B complex along with the separate B6.

I have three fingers affected by Hebreden's nodes. They are essentially bone spurs on the top joints of the fingers. The only solution I have found is taking a daily vitamin K2 capsule every night. They are greatly reduced now. From what I understand, the K2 redistributes calcium from the soft tissues where it is not supposed to be to the bones where it belongs. I think this would also hold true for calcified blood vessels too.

Thank you for this, jholl. I will try it. Could you tell me how much mcg is in the capsule you take, please.

Hello jholl! I'm very excited to see your post! I have Heberden's nodes that are growing fast, are ugly and hurt. I have been taking Vitamin K2 (MK-7) 120mcg per day for many months but it hasn't helped.

If you can please share:

- the dosage you took

- when you say 'greatly reduced' do you mean that the actual bumps have reduced in size?

Can't wait to hear from you! Thank you!

Yes the bumps are now much smaller. I have read to take it with vitamin D3. I have used life extension brand called super k for most of the time I have taken it. Boron can also play a part in this I think. I take a supplement called triple boron complex by Swanson. You can also just take regular borax by 20 mule team borax using about 1/4 teaspoon or so. I think the K2 is by far the most important. The goal is to move the calcium out of the soft tissue and back into the bones where it needs to be. Calcium can deposit in the arteries and veins too, so it may be connected to atherosclerosis as well. I am not a doctor, but it seems likely to me. Another thought might be trying serrapeptase and/or nattokinase. Another might be chanca piedra. I have taken all of these in various combinations and times depending on the current health issue. We are all different, so it is difficult to pinpoint what helps. I am just hoping we can all help each other to find our own solutions. Best wishes to you!

Can you recommend any natural treatment for the pain of the Heberden's nodes - while I wait for the Vit K2 to do it's magic?

If the ACV dosn't stop the nodules, (they are called Hebendens nodules if they are on the finger joints).. Try Lemon juice it disolves the dead calcium that the ACV cant. But be careful not to continue for too long.. A couple of weeks on and a couple of weeks off should be ok for about three months, . If you go into full detox you could get some boils or zits as other nasty stuff comes out.
