Hey, eat bread fatty foods, pizza but not more fat than bread or rice or potato the fat will be added to yours stores the carbs will keep your insulin running, that stores fat and throw in some protein but not too much or you metabolism will go up again. I'd try living off of rice with butter on it and some fiber add in. Mashed potatoes /w butter. Keep insulin up eat 2000 cals a day or a lil more. Eat vegtables and fruit once in a while. also if you eat more fat than carbs you might keep your blood sugar from going high enough from going into fat storing mode.

Gokkan, I don't think there is any need for a "slow" introduction to Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA). Dr. Berkson recommends 600 mg. In A.M. and 300 in P.M. Taking it and other vitamins with your largest meals of the day (Dr. Berkson gives these amount I.V. in his clinic in New Mexico, USA). It probably doesn't matter if the doses are split in 3-300mg. doses. May even be more absorbable that way. There is no particular harm in continuing the ALA after her liver problems are under control. ALA acts as an enzyme, as well as a liver protectant, and facilitates many positive chemical reactions in our bodies.

Actually it is estrogen that causes the increase in cholesterol in bile not prgesterone, if this was the case we would see a decrease in stones as women got older and periods ceased however the opposite is quite true, gallstones increase when periods cease due to decrease in progesterone.

Dear Peter, thanks information you gave... I am from Turkey. My mother has Liver cirrhosis. I read lots of good things about Dr. Burt Berkson's protocol. I want to try ALA, Selenium, Sylmarian with B complex on my mother. But I am confused about dose... I will try to give 100mg ALA 3x in a day (total 300mg in a day). Than go up to 300mg ALA 3x in a day (total 900mg in a day). is it reasonable ? when we must stop to give ALA?
ps. I found that, Dr. Berkson recommends Metabolic Maintenance, Carlsons, and Biotech vitamin manufacturers. One of the interview he says dose about ALA.. "he has never gone above 15 mg/kg. For primates it takes about 90 mg/kg to kill a primate.

To Paul from Seattle, you mention taking 400 selenium, do you mean mg? mcg? I read the average consumption for an adult is 100 - 200 mcg, 400 mcg would be double, now mg would be crazy of the charts. Help me out figuring out what you meant to say, please. Or let me know if it is correct and it was recommended due to your condition. Thank you.

Gallstones are not formed from fatty foods; they can be formed from too much calcium, too much progesterone, and disorders in the liver concerning bile or cholesterol, etc. Women do not get gallstones because of diets, they get them more than men because of progesterone from birthcontrol pills, from pregancy, from hormone treatment. I am a nutritionist who eats healthy, sans mammal meats and dairy, and I had 44 gallstones that I extracted naturally myself using the gallstone flush. They formed because I was on too high a dose of progesterone.

Hi There,
Thank you for sharing this info with us. I am so pleased that this has worked for you. I knew turmeric was a wonder spice, but didn't know how far it went. I have been taking curcumin tablets with green tea for awhile, for inflammation, and it does help, but maybe the actual spice it better. I have used turmeric with aloe vera to make a paste, and I put it on a scabby thing on my nose that wouldn't heal, and it fell off in just two days. Amazing. I wish you continued good health. Thanks again

My liver panels were elevated off the chart two years ago. Family dr sent me to a liver transplant specialist who stated I would need biopsy and 80% chance of liver transplant. I said I'll call back to schedule that.
Instead, started eating turmeric every morning with an omelet and lots of black pepper. Did paste of turmeric with olive oil & rubbed it into the area directly over my liver and covered with an old towel and put a heating pad over it for a half hour and did the same with bottoms of my feet a few nights a week for a month or so (cover with old socks as turmeric will stain the bed sheets). I was getting monthly liver panels. 2nd mth after doing turmeric my panels stopped raising, then each month after that slowly started going down! After 10 months my levels were within normal limits.
My family doctor is in awe and is now using turmeric for his family. I will continue turmeric the rest of my life and suspect my panels will continue to go even lower. I can honestly say turmeric saved me from a liver transplant for non alchol fatty liver disease!
I have been giving it to all my dogs and the older ones with arthritis are running around like they did when they were pups and they never get any sores or lumps of any kind anywhere, only go to the vet for rabies shot as I live in the country (skunks, raccoons, possums, etc) Who would've thought an item u can get at the grocery store for less than $3. 00 a month would cure non alchol fatty liver disease! And no painful and dangerous surgical transplant!!!!

I had severe bloating (ascites) and could only walk a few steps. I was at death's door step. I was "tapped"(paracentisis) about six times--the last time they removed about 7 liters of fluid from my abdomen. The Berkson protocol (Alpha Lipoic Acid, Selenium, and Milk Thistle) worked for me. It did not cure my hepatitis C but all my enzymes improved dramatically along with my health. I went from not being able to walk without a cane to being able to walk 3 miles plus, and reasonably good health. I started to recover within a week or two and went to his clinic in Las Cruces, New Mexico where he administers the ALA intervenously--twice a day. If you type in his name on line (Dr. Burt Berkson) you should come up with some articles as well as the Integrative Medical Clinic of New Mexico. If you are in Texas you are not too far from him.

Please respond asap, as my husband was recently diagnosed as having liver cirrhosis - no biopsy as yet, but has these symptoms. He has been tapped but the ascites comes right back. Sorry for the delayed response. You can purchase ALA (Alpha Lipoic Acid), Selenium and Milk Thistle at virtually any vitamin store in the U. S. And many other countires as well. I took (and take) 600 mg. ALA with breakfast and 300 with dinner. I also took/take 400 each of selenium and Milk Thistle twice a day with meals. It's a good idea to take a B vitamin if your taking the ALA because it seems to deplete B a bit in its metabolism. Obviously a number of other things help liver health as well including a number of things on this site (good low fat diet, beets, tumeric, castor oil packs, etc.)
ALA is also being praised as a superior anti-oxident by Bruce Ames, Ph. D. Of University of California who may be the most respected researcher of anti-oxidents in the world. For that purpose he recommends you take it 250 mg. Along with 500 mg. Carnitine. They market a commercial mix of the two called Juvenon that Dr. Weil sells on his web site though you could probably buy the items cheaper on your own.

I used to have asthma really bad and had to use a inhaler quite a few times a day. When I started perimenopause I had an allergic reaction to Chinese food and ended up in the hospital getting a breathing treatment and put on steroids. Later I found out I was allergic to MSG. Well, as you know MSG is in so many foods but I was determined to not eat it any longer so I wouldn't end up in the hospital again. After 3 months, I wasn't having attacks as often. After 1 year I didn't need an inhaler unless I had a respitory infection. I had less sinus infections. It has been 5 years now. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels not to have to use an inhaler or feel like you can't breathe. I wish they would take MSG out of food as I believe this is why so many children have asthma now. It's a shame the FDA allows this.

Alpha Lipoic Acid, along with selenium and milk thistle are a very helpful treatment for liver problems includidng cirrhosis. Burt Berkson, M. D, Ph. D., of Las Cruces, New Mexico has been treating patient with it for decades and has written a book and several monographs on the subject. I was very ill from cirrhosis, had severe ascites, could not walk witihout a cane--and only then a few yards-- and told I had to have a liver transplant or I would be dead in a month or two.
I began taking these subtances orally (600 mg. ALA with breakfast, 300 with dinner, along with selenium and milk thistle) annd immediately began to improve. I then went to Dr. Berkson's clinic and took a course of I.V. Alpha Lipoic Acid from him. It's been two years later and I am still well and able to walk miles, excercise, work and lead a normal life. You can find Dr. Berkson's monographs on line. It saved my life.

You don't say how much of salt or lemon you add to the carbonated water. Just as a healthy tonic, I made this up with a tall glass of the carb. water, then I added one teaspoon of sea salt and 1/2 juiced lemon. It was delicious and I could drink it all day; love the salty sweet. But I'm curious... Why do you say the doctors won't like you drinking this. Is it bad for you? Can I take in too much salt this way? should I limit it? Also, am I even adding enough salt and lemon to be of good use? And what, since your article does not say, is the benefit of the salt? Thanks so much.

I used some of the information in two of Dr Sandra Cabot's books to help clean my liver. 6 years ago, my liver enzymes were 3 times higher than normal and an ultrasound showed a fatty liver and 2 large gallstones. I added carrot, celery, and parsley juice to my breakfast along with a large glass of fresh lime juice/water for a month. I cut out red meat and dairy for about 4 months and took vitamin E, milk thistle, and taurine daily for about 6 months. 9 months after starting it, my liver enzymes were in the middle of the normal range and I haven't done anything to cleanse my liver since then. 6 years later, my liver enzymes are 10% of what they were when I started the supplements and juicing and I haven't had a gallbladder attack either. I hope this helps someone.

Usa, I agree with you on the environment we live in can be toxic to us. I proved this, when I was sent to Colombia, South America with the Red Cross for 7 months. I live in NY and had asthma that worsened with 9/11. I was allergic to everything, so many foods and always felt sick and not really strong, especially when I hit 39. Within my first month in Colombia, I no longer had to use my asthma inhalers, or was allergic to so many things. I was eating fruits off trees all day long and lost over 25 lbs. I was so happy and healthy. Upon my return to NY, I slowly deteriorated and within 4 months I had my first asthma attack again. I thought I had been cured, so much that I wasn't even carrying an inhaler and had to rush to the e.r. I have since then considered getting my degree and since I am bilingual moving down to South America and living life, not just surviving like I feel we do here in the United States, unfortunately. I found at a very young age that my liver has always been at risk; I found recently after many years of pain in lower back and being way under weight but severe swelling through out my whole body, was caused from mold, I was also surprised to find that 90% of the USA has chances of mold build up because of the continuous dampness year round causes this mold, the worse case scenario is that doctors nation wide are treating it as an infection which adds insult to injury because most antibiotics are made from mold.
Recently I almost had a heart attack because the antibiotic ciproflaxine made my chest feel like it had been crushed. I think from now on God willing I plan on not seeing a doctor unless absolutely needed. I later found that I had neck surgery that was not needed. How sad a world we live in.

Internal Body Cleanser, disenfectant & Rejuvenator
Water (Carbonated Spring, mineral) it has to be carbonated.
Pure Lemon Juice ( from lemons, a lemon squeeze, bottled 100% lemon juice)
Sea Salt
If you are not a fan of the salty food this may take some getting use to.This elixir is a rejuvenator for a sick, dying liver. Not for the healthy.
Mix sea salt into water in large glass, until it is salty to the taste but still drinkable add lemon juice until you taste salty lemon. Drink it slowly. First time you drink it, it will give you severe diarhea. Drink it slowly & have 2 to 3 glasses a day.
Warning: I took lots of slack from the family. The medical professionals won't like the idea either. I knew. I just knew after much research on cirrohsis, that a very sick liver will begin to recover slowly at first & then your blood tests will begin to come back with much better numbers in the various catagories they check for. This is not a quick fix but is meant to be done over a long period of time. You will see an improvement after about 8 weeks. In between drinking this eleixer make sure you drink plenty of water. Eat lots of vegetsbles, fruit & the leaner meats.Stay away from breads, tortillas & eat sweets in strict moderation especially at first.
You need to take care of yourself & make your health a priority.Something that has probably been missing from your life. I have to take monthly blood tests now 4 years after I was diagnosed with stage 4 cirrohisis. Say goodbeye to any alcohol addicition, if that's why you got this terrible disease.Your liver is sick, slow & lazy. This elixer will wake it up again.Your blood tests should begin to improve in their results within a few short months.. I went from being on the transplant list, to being moved to hepatology & now a family practitioner for monthly visits & blood tests. I have now had quite a few blood tests come back near normal except for slight anemia.I continue with lasix & spirolactone, also laculose although as time passes in less doses. I once thought myself fortunate to survive 2 years after my terminal diagnosis but now going on 5 yeras, I'm no longer consider myself terminal in any sense of the word. I do not have an expiration date any longer!

Dear Neil:
The article does not directly deal with the real cause of the issue. Gallstones are formed not from chlorogenic acid deficiency, but it is formed from eating very oily foods that exceeds the liver's capacity to emulsify the fatty food. When this happens fat collesce to form tiny balls of fat which form gallstones, along with excessive calcium. But it is also true that excessive fats lead to liver cirrhosis, or a fatty liver. The issue is that Western dietary habits eat too much fatty food and the body simply accumulates fat. While it is true that chlorogenic acid did reduce gallstone, the sad story is it shouldn't happen in the first place if excessive fatty foods weren't eaten at all. Time and time again I mentioned the use of granulated lecithin taken along with food to emulsify the fat, avoid the use of vegetable oils in cooking, fatty foods, and sugar. Chlorogenic acid real action is it prevents the body from increasing blood glucose quickly enough, or something like sugar spikes, when this happens the liver has to overwork and store them or tuck them and converted into fats before it damages the body system. So the issue hence becomes controlling blood sugar, and chromium, which I found can reduce weight, and it doesn't have to be chromium picolinate. I found out a much cheaper chromium chloride works quite effectively in reducing weight, blood sugar to more normal levels and even cured hirsute both men and women, within weeks. Coffee really have a problem of gout and increased uric acid.
A major component of bile is actually water, bicarbonates, and salt. The baking soda and water with sea salt is also a major remedy I have always post almost as consistently. There is an urban legend about not drinking water while eating. This urban legend caused a major problem, it tends to put stress on to the liver with insufficient water, excessive salt, and lack of bicarbonates leading to gallstones, despite the fact that the liver is an efficient organ in emptying the liquids BEFORE it begins to digest. This is why water goes right through the stomach fast and then you have an urge to urinate within a short time.
The issue of bicarbonates is one of the reason why alkalization remedy was chosen: to support the liver function as well as granulated lecithin to emulsify the fat. That alone isn't sufficient, metabolic acidosis, excessive sugar intake causes problems too. If the body's pH is acid, calcium in the bones dissolve and blood serum calcium is high, clogging up the heart, causing stroke, clogging the liver causing If the food has excessive oils, in particular vegetable oils which biochemically becomes cholesterol, as well as excessive eating of meats leads to cholesterol. People actually don't normally think chicken to be high in cholesterol of they don't eat the skins. This thinking is wrong. Cholesterol is found just as high level in white chicken meat as it is found in any meats. Only eating more green vegetables can people lower the cholesterol. I once had an extreme case of high blood cholesterol and had trouble with reducing this issue so a more radical steps was needed to simply avoided all pork, beef and chicken as an emergency measures eating only vegetables for about a month, the figures within a month was within normal parameters. As to the goodness cholergenic acid, it is a lot simpler to just take chinese herbs high in cholergenic acid (chrysanthemum flower, lonicera flowers (jinyinhua), ucommia bark and gardenia fruit which has 20% cholergenic acid) taken ocassionally without the added risk of gout, acidosis, caffeine addiction, and dehydration associated with drinking coffee. Women get more gallstone then men because they keep going into weight crashing diets which dehydrate the body, increase the blood fats, causing gallstones when the blood becomes too concentrated and bile is too concentrated too.

Hi Ted,
I just came across this webpage, which discusses using coffee amongst other things to help promote bile flow.

I love the moderate use of coffee but abstain from it as most complementary health practitioners, including Traditional Chinese Medicine say to avoid it. I'd love to hear your feelings on drinking coffee when the liver / gallbladder are impaired and when there is also already a danger that the body is too acidic. Thanks and bless you.
